Catered Ski Chalet: 260 year old Farmhouse With Stunning Mountain Views
Catered skiing holidays (winter); B&B (summer). Demi-pension en hiver; chambres d'hôtes avec petits déjeuners en été.
For people in search of something authentic.
At La Portette you will find genuine hospitality in a fabulous setting.
We are right at the heart of Paradiski with over 425kms of pistes. Situated at 1150 metres on one side of the Tarentaise Valley, the village is covered in snow from December to the end of March.
The owners are your hosts: Andy and Liza and our daughter Camille. Our concern for the personal is reflected in your kind responses: the 5* Trip Advisor reviews and the 9.7 Review Score on Booking.com based on 165 customer comments.
Our beautiful house dates from 1756; a 270 year old farmhouse whose original features include exposed stonework, lots of beams, old wooden doors and quirky archways. A spiral staircase leads up to the stunning top floor with a spacious open plan living and dining area. Balconies open off 2 sides of the house from picture windows with amazing views up and down the Tarentaise valley across to the distant peaks of Mont Blanc.
The airy living room has huge, squashy sofas, a log fire and an extensive library.
Downstairs is traditional and cosy. The family suite features a 4 poster bed hung with muslin curtains. One twin room has built in wooden cupboard beds with curtains, adored by children. Every room is furnished differently, with nice linens and a shelf – or two – of books.
Fabulous food is served: daily breakfasts, afternoon teas, and evening meals with wine.

Paradiski has some of the best skiing in Europe, with 425kms of pistes and high altitude slopes. But the purpose built resorts of the 60s and 70s that go with this aren’t for everyone. The farming hamlets of the lower slopes will offer you the charm and authenticity, the tradition and character, of the Savoie. With a free 3 minute minibus shuttle to the lifts of course!
Here since 2003, our detailed knowledge of the area will help you make the most of your holiday. Whatever your ability, slope preference or even the weather we can advise on itineraries. And we can suggest activities for non-skiers too.

Beautiful converted farmhouse in a great location.
Liza provided exceptional customer service. Unobtrusive yet always available to provide information about the entire resort. The shuttle service provided on both a daily basis and local pick up at the beginning and end of the holiday was efficient. The property was lovely with high quality catering. We loved the book collection. We would recommend this property as a ski destination.

Wonderful Chalet
A lovely homely chalet great for a few families to share, the food and drinks were plentiful and very good quality, the chalet hosts Tom and Charlotte were also pleasant and efficient. Liza and Andy , the owners couldn't do enough for us ferrying us up to the lifts and collecting us again as well as sorting out all our lift passes and ski gear. A wonderful place which we would love to return to ... if they will have us !

Fantastic
We were treated to a luxury skiing holiday at this fabulously quaint catered chalet. The owner was very accommodating to all of our needs and the chalet staff were first rate. The cooked breakfasts in the morning filled us up for the day until our afternoon tea and cake. The children enjoyed their dinner at 6pm which allowed for the adults to enjoy our three course meal in relative peace. Montchavin is a fabulous place to ski, which combined with La Plagne, gives enough terrain for skiers of all abilities.

About the host
Hosted by Liza Smedley
We are Andy and Liza, the owners of La Portette. Once dedicated city dwellers, we upped sticks from London in 2003 and moved to a tiny rural hamlet in a clearing in the forest on the side of a hill: Montorlin. When in 2002 we bought this house, we'd almost given up looking. Over 2 summers we'd seen modern houses, tiny sheds, old barns with the wind whistling through them, but nothing that made us gasp. As we stood at the foot of the house, the estate agent chattering to me in French about the 3 vaulted cellars, Andy jumped up and down at my side. 'This one? Does she mean this one?' That was it. Love at first sight. We married here in 2005 and had our daughter here in 2007, Camille.
Why they chose this property
We'd always loved La Plagne for the skiing: huge, varied and snow sure. As a keen walker I wanted somewhere beautiful to explore in the summers too, and as we intended to live out here, somewhere that had a life all year round. Montorlin changes with the seasons: wintersports in winter, cows and sheeps and goats in spring; walkers and mountain bikers, paragliders and watersports in summer; cows and sheep and goats again in autumn! Getting here is easy (getting away harder!) Autoroutes all the way to Albertville, 'A' roads from there to Bourg St Maurice, smaller but well maintained mountain roads up the hill. Once here you are away from everyone. The valley stretches out below and in front of you, and its broad base means the surrounding hills don't oppress, just cradle you.
What makes this property unique
We looked up at the 4 storeys of house from the foot, and saw something original and charming: thick old stones, walls with no right angles, a curving tower (the staircase), all topped with a huge balcony. Inside we found character and modern plumbing; old beams and a new roof; nooks and crannies and a huge open living area. Each room has its own character. Downstairs is old with 3 foot thick walls and beamed ceilings. The room on the stairs has an original old door and amazing views. On the 1st floor the 2 bedrooms have been completely renovated in 2024, together with their bathrooms. At the top of the spiral staircase the house opens up into light and space, with picture windows and supporting beams into the apex of the roof.
