Mary and Robert are excellent hosts

We did not spend much time in the property as we travelled around Wales doing the usual touristy things. The property oozes rustic charm, and was a great place to crash after a hard day on the tourist trail. Mary and Robert were very considerate hosts. It was our anniversary, and we came home one evening to find Mary had left a bouquet of flowers and a card on the doorstep - thank you Mary for your thoughtful gesture.

Sunny Snowdonia

We had a great stay at Mary's house. The location and views were fantastic. The cottage was full of character and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Our boys were ably to explore the farm on their bikes, whilst we enjoyed the house and garden. The location was ideal for Dyfi Mountain Bike park. Mary was very helpful with recommendations.

Beautiful Cottage

I’ve given 4/5 for accuracy of listing. The photographs do not do justice to this lovely cottage. Lovely setting. Very private. Comfy & quaint dwelling. The owner Mary is also very accommodating & does not intrude. We will be staying again!

Chocolate box cottage

Amazing stay in this quaint cottage. Views to die for. Set all along. No neighbours except sheep and cattle. Well equipped cottage. Lovely gardens. A little bit scary climbing the car up a steep hill. But well worth it in the end. Loved our stay here for new year. Highly recommend

Lovely and peaceful

Cottage very traditional with original features and furnishings. Very peaceful and the owner was very good and supportive of needs. We took two dogs and they enjoyed the gardens which where stock proof so we relaxed knowing they where safe. Directions on finding cottage could do with being abit clearer but after ringing Mary we found it ok. We will hopefully be staying again next year. Overall very happy.

Great affordable base for exploring

So the negative comments in reviews are perhaps a result of not telling Mary while there? Yes I found the bed hard but I told her and she paid money into my account to buy a memory foam topper as she was away in france at the time . She cares and is responsive . I don’t see why others haven’t done the same . I can see some of the items in the house now That others have suggested. The house is old and furniture is traditional . It’s not over priced at all and if people want high end hotel level maybe they should go elsewhere? My suggestion for further items would be a bread board and maybe a net to play tennis/badminton and agree with previous reviews that there is no overstock from previous tenants but there is handsoap , initial basket of logs , washing up stuff, tea towels, plenty of utensils and fresh towels and crockery and comfy pillows on the beds . It does feel like staying at the welsh grandmas you never had , but I am not keen on sterile soulless places . Nothing in walking distance so make sure you come prepared . Didn’t rate the food at one of the local pubs (the red lion) but it had a great pool table , another is in the skinners arms but the Indian takeaway was amazing . Quite nice to cook and light the fire at the cottage . Plenty of hot water, heating and good shower . Watch out for sooty the cat he’s very at home and might get locked in if you’re not careful. All trails for hiking routes is a great idea . But there are book shops in town as well

Dovey Valley Cottage

Id describe it as an hidden gem. The cottage is beautiful and quaint. The garden goes all around the house and is fully secure if you have doggies. The design inside the house is in keeping with the character of the cottage. Very clean, very homely. Logs were provided for those chilly evenings. If there is anything that you need to know just message Mary and she is more than helpful. She did pop by a couple of times but we kept missing her. You do need to take everything with you food wise Great location 15 mins to local village. Great food at the Red Lion in dinas. Your in the mach loop so you can see the jets grom the garden. A beautiful 5 days of pure bliss. We will be returning as it is now one of our favourite places 😀

Made friends with a farm cat which was so lovely. Really enjoyed the fireplace, the overall vibe was wonderful. We will definitely coming back!:)

Another great holiday at Mary’s beautiful cottage

This was our third visit to the cottage - we love the location, the privacy, the country cottage feel of the property and the lateral around garden which is perfect for dogs. Great walks in the area and a short journey to shops.

Disappointing

On arrival, the views were beautiful, pulled up to the front door and the porch set the alarm off for us.The house was in need of a serious update and the kitchen was full of rusty ,old, dirty appliances.Paint peeling of the walls onto the kitchen surface areas.I know that cobwebs are common in older country properties, but this is the first time i have seen cobwebs on the kitchen tap.The views as stated before, are absolutely stunning and that is the only reason we stayed the full duration of 4 nights. We will definitely not be returning again. As seasonal holiday makers in Wales cottages,we travel all around and use the holiday lets 3 times a year. This property will not be on our return list.

Nice Setting

Traditional cottage with lovely garden, quiet location and views over the valley. Lots of birds in the garden and keep an eye out for local tawny owl. If you are interested in the low flying military aircraft - the valley the cottage looks over is part of the Mach Loop so you can see them from here. If you suffer with back/joint pain you may wish to take something to layer on the mattress as it is very firm. Mary was very friendly and very helpful, sending us lots of recommendations of places to visit.

Weekend break with dogs

Lovely old 17th century cottage. Kitchen a bit tired and the reviews recommending taking all essentials with you were invaluable. Settled in quickly, very comfortable. Solitude was perfect especially over bonfire night with our two dogs. Garden completely stock proof so very safe for children and pets. Small issue we had (missing corkscrew) was resolved by the lovely owner Mary promptly. Mary can provide lots of information about the cottage and it's history. Fascinating. Definitely one to return to we feel. Kim, Rod, Rufus & Kizzy

Nice little break

the property was ideal if you want a remote hideaway with easy access to the hills...town and beach not too far away if thats your thing. property had everything you need including a basket of logs for the cosy fire. looking to go back in the summer - the only bit id change is to trim down the front hedge so you can see the spectacular view down the valley when sat on the patio thanks Mary

Lovely cottage.

The property is in a lovely and peaceful setting. Driving distance from loads of beautiful locations. A child gate was provided which made our stay much easier. There is a but.. it is the first time using vrbo that in a property we have not found the essentials, such as sugar, salt, tea, coffe, toilet paper, hair dryer etc. My advise is to go very prepared as the first big shop is at at least 20m drive from the property. Despite of the above we have had a wonderful time.

About the host

Hosted by Mary Williams

Host profile image
I take pride that, Penycoed, on the doorstep of Southern Snowdonia (W244) and my Knightsbridge flat in Eresby House (E2379) are first and foremost family homes rather than purely holiday lets.

Why they chose this property

Penycoed has been part of the family farm for generations. It is situated on a hill in the picturesque Dyfi valley on the gentle southern slopes of Snowdonia. The coast and the old estuary port of Aberdovey, now a well known tourist destination, with its sandy beaches, sailing and golfing opportunities are a short drive away.

What makes this property unique

Being a city dweller, the cottage with its large enclosed garden continues to provide the perfect retreat and antidote to a stressful life throughout the year. Carefully renovated, it retains its period features and is furnished accordingly.

In winter, the large inglenook with its open log fire provides the perfect opportunity to relax, whilst in summer the substantial lawns, planting and high hedge provide private spaces to relax when not enjoying the wider amenities of the area.

Whilst being secluded, it has amenities such as restaurants, pubs and even a village shop and post office nearby. The acclaimed Centre for Alternative Technology is a few miles away.
