Stable Converted Cottage In The Heart Of Castletownshend
Passing through an archway into the courtyard of Shana Court, a customs house, Shana Cottage was originally the stables. Castletownshend is within easy access (52 miles) of Cork Airport. The village provides an excellent base to explore the magnificent surrounding countryside, coastline and beaches by car or foot. Opposite Shana Cottage is the award winning Mary Ann’s pub which produces fine quality local seafood with a bar and restaurant menu. The village has a public stony beach which is clean and safe for swimming, and a public pier suitable for launching small boats. West Cork is one of the best places in Europe for seeing whales, dolphins and seals. Trips out to see them can be arranged, where you are picked up from the public pier. There is plenty of scenic walking in the area, including Knockdrum Stone Circle just outside the village and the ‘Five Fingers’ standing stones close by.

No seals on doors and windows made for a dafty stay. Many of the updates to the property, do not appear to be finished, for example carpeting isn’t tacked down to the floor, or sealing on the bath drain.
We enjoyed our stay, well appointed cottage. A bit remote location. Must have car and GPS! However we wasted buying a whole bag of firewood and couldn't get it going.. there were no instructions on how to work for, hot water, living room heaters. But once caretaker showed up next day she answered some of our questions.
The cottage is beautiful, quiet and well-maintained. Anne, the person who keeps it ready for guests, is lovely and responsive. The village itself is wonderful and there was a pub across the street that had some of the best food we had in all of Ireland! We highly recommend this place to stay!
Die Sauberkeit des Ferienhauses lässt stark zu wünschen übrig. Der Außenbereich (Hof) sieht furchtbar aus. Für den Garten wären ein paar neue Gartenmöbel angebracht
This near the sea cottage was the perfect get away for us.
Two bedroom with second room having 2 single beds. amazing 2.5 foot thick walls. Watch the mirrors of your car as you enter under the arch. We drove to the end of the street turned around and made a wide turn in. there were some unclean utensils in the drawer that we had to clean but I am going to blame whomever was there before us.
L'hébergement est rustique mais grand et très bien équipé. A éviter si vous aimez le moderne. Nous avons été très bien accueillis par ann. Je recommande, en plus un pub juste en face. Un vrai séjour Irlandais
This is an excellent place to stay if you you want to get a taste of real Ireland. It is off the beaten track a bit but, there is a fantastic restaurant across the road and a genuine Irish pub 100 yards up the road .the cottage itself is old converted building with lots of character and warms up in 10 mins . Stayed here last year and came back again this year. And most likely will book it for next year.

Could be so good
I am afraid I was one of the few who found this property really disappointing.
I love old so no problem there, the 3 foot thick whitewashed walls were brilliant and the lounge was lovely ( photo below if there is an option to upload) - but that is where the plaudits stop. It is adequate and we enjoyed our stay - but old is one thing, tired and in need of some (quite a lot actually) TLC is totally different. Our hearts dropped as we pulled up into the parking space, felt as if we had booked in to a 1960’s Glasgow tenement. The big house next door look almost derelict and the two shells of old stables adjoining, even worse. Kitchen had all needed but in 2023 don’t think an oap should have to get on his knees and burn his fingers lighting the gas oven with matches! The wood stove looked really welcoming, the empty log basket didn’t! The contact in the village said she’d get some but didn’t. She also took 30 euros from us for heating/ electric ( as agreed) but wondered if it all found it’s way to the owner!
The bedroom was of a good size but like so much more of the house it really need decorating. The house could be SO good!
Apologies for publishing this publicly, I have tried to get in touch with the owner privately via the verbo website but to no avail!
Most of the original stone walls of the cottage are painted white and all the rooms are large and spacious. The exception is the galley kitchen, by definition. Everything needed for a stay is there and housekeeper Anne is welcoming and helpful.
This is a very nice cottage which has been converted into a holiday home for 2-4 people. The kitchen is very well equipped. The heating and hot water takes a bit of getting used to, but works quite quickly (except for the rinse water). The Cottage also has a large garden, which is shared with the main house.
Directly opposite is a bar, where you can eat a broad range of different meals. Since it closes at 9 pm, there is no noise disturbance.
Very misleading, deserted town far from any activity.
This place was not as described. Dead rat in light fixture, covered in spiders and webs. Pincher bugs in beds. Fire extinguishers last serviced in 2007 and 2011. Black mold around tub, strong odor of urine around makeshift toilet. Broken down furniture. Had to purchase our own toilet paper. Expected to clean before leaving and leave extra euros for heat and electricity. Documentation in pictures of all. Extremely disappointing, have never experienced a VRBO in such a poor condition.
This property in Castletownshend is a gem. Our stay was perfect and I hope to visit again one day
This cottage exudes Irish charm. Kate and Anne were both wonderful to communicate with. I thank them both for helping my family to make great memories during our trip to Ireland.
The property is located in the West Cork area in Castletownhend village. The village itself has beautiful architecture with a small castle and church. A 30 minute walk from the property is enough to view the pier, castle, and church and must be done if you visit.
We stayed here to visit Ring of Kerry, Dingle peninsula and Cliffs of Moher. If you travel around the Ring of Kerry, make sure to visit the Cliffs of Kerry. They are as stunning as the more famous Cliffs of Moher.
A note about roads in Ireland: Some of you may be visiting from countries where you drive on the other side of the road and where manual transmissions are rare. Layer this on to the challenge of some Irish roads and you have an adventure. We found that Kate's instructions to mostly stay on the M and N roads are invaluable. Read those arrival instructions and trust them over Google Maps. We relied on Google maps initially and found ourselves traveling excessively on R and L roads that resulted in things such as: coming upon other vehicles around blind corners on a road only wide enough for one car, making over-hill trecks on roads that our mini rental was at risk of high centering on, and other adventures. Thanks Kate!
