About this property

The Best View Of Loch Ness

This exceptional split-level apartment in the Monastery Tower is truly unique. Beautiful original stone windows offer breathtaking views over Loch Ness. It has a stunning and private location on the top floor of St Benedict’s Abbey, a Victorian monastery that has been converted into luxury apartments. Stylishly decorated throughout, this property makes a wonderful romantic getaway.

Alternatively, it could be used for a party of four utilising the large sofa bed in the main living area.

The property is situated at the top of the grand stone staircase from the historic cloisters walkway. If you look at pictures of the Abbey, in many of them you will see a tall, square tower that stands above the rest of the building – this is where the Monastery Tower apartment is located.

In many of the apartments, and from the Abbey grounds itself, you will get some wonderful views of Loch Ness but the Monastery Tower offers truly unrestricted views over the trees and right across the water.

All of the rooms in the apartment are special but the highlight is probably the open plan living / kitchen area. A series of stunning arch windows work their way around this unique room bringing in much light and providing panoramic views of the loch and mountains.

Entertainment options include a flat screen TV with Freesat, Netflix (provided free to our guests), and bluetooth speakers for your phones and tablets. The fully fitted and well-equipped kitchen area features lovely granite work surfaces and the dining area has an oak dining table and four chairs.

Upstairs, the bedroom features a very comfortable king size bed, with windows overlooking the cloisters and a flat screen TV with an integrated DVD player for those lazy days.

Located next to the bedroom, the bathroom with its original quatrefoil windows and lovely views has a powerful built-in shower over the bath. There is also a second toilet located on the lower floor.

This welcoming apartment provides modern comforts and convenience whilst retaining many of its striking original features.

Amazing Location and View

Spent a week at this amazing location. All the facilities at the Highland Club were excellent and the Location perfect. We ate at the Lovett Hotel which was amazing and the Boathouse restaurant with the friendliest staff and great food. For touring this location is perfect with instant access to the main roads. Highly recommend but beware the 78 steps to the Apartment, not for the unfit especially with Luggage :-)

Atmospheric stay right by Loch Ness

Our family of four (children aged 5 and 8) stayed in the old bell tower over Easter. The apartment is well equipped and comfortable, the views of the loch are wonderful, and there is lots for children to do, including an indoor swimming pool. The location is peaceful but close to walking trails, restaurants and lake cruises. The unique, older building has some quirks, for example, doors are weighted fire doors and most windows do not have shutters or blockout. Be aware that there are several flights of stairs and there is no lift. Communication was all clear and timely.

well can use one word....WOW such a great property, super location being as high as you can be in the tower you have super views from the windows. if your able to climb the steps to this apartment(there is no lift) it should be on your list of places to stay. the stairs are wide and easy to use, no worry about a spiral stair case!

A quick getaway to the Highlands

The location and views from the property are excellent. Location to surrounding area is good for going to Inverness or the area around the Abbey. We had many trips into the woods/Forests around and had a wonderful time. I would have liked the pool area to be opened longer say till 21:00 so that if you wanted to relax you didn't have to rush back from enjoying the local scenery. Overall we enjoyed it very much and would certainly consider going back another time.

Fabulous unusual property

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this unusual property. It had everything provided that you will need for your stay and a fantastic view of Loch Ness. The tea, coffee, milk and biscuits provided were a lovely welcome. There is access to a swimming pool, gym and tennis courts which is an added bonus. It was in the perfect position for us to explore the Highlands, with lots of walks from the flat as well as further afield and hiring a bike was easy for cycling along the canal path, or further along the Great Glen Way. We would thoroughly recommend this property, but do bear in mind that there are a significant number of stairs to access the flat, which could be daunting after a whole day of walking/climbing/cycling, but definitely well worth the effort!

Perfect Getaway

The building was fantastic, old and new, but we stayed in the old part, near the old bell tower (converted into a two floor apartment). The views were to die for and the grounds were idyllic and inspiring with clean air and mountain views along with being afforded a perfect view of the Loch ness. Inside the apartment, we had a lounge area, kitchen, a separate toilet and a bedroom and toiled/ bathroom area upstairs. The bed was sooooo comfortable, i nearly slept the week we were there, lol!! There is a local mini supermarket 5 mins walk, with a garage to top up at before you search further afield. The roads are pretty quiet genaerally, but you have to get used to some single lanes with passing bays.... :) The local people are super friendly and I recommend you also visit the glass souvenir shop nearby as it has some great stuff there. We were not to enthralled with the local chip restaurant there, but maybe that was just us, BUT the local pub/ restaurant's were pretty good and just a couple of minutes walk away .... oh and there is Nessie by the river as well!! Scotland is AMAZING !! you will love it there. We will be back and I am sure you will be as well. Dont forget to visit the Ben Nevis Range... You can even take a lift to the top!! Amazing place aso..... Finally, as a family person, i would say this place is great for kids as well. We stayed in our apartment with 2 adults and 2 kids (on a provided sofa bed) and we had the luxary of playing chess outdoors, swimming in a pool, table tennis, sauna and other stuff we had no time for. If the weather is bad, this place is AMAZING!! If the weather is good, it is still amazing and our Landlords, Nick & Sarah were so quick and great in answering any questions. I would HIGHLY recommend here to anyone looking for the perfect week or two away!! James

Beautiful apartment, beautiful grounds......

The apartment was stunning and was fitted out with eveeything you could possibly need in a self catering apartment and to a high spec as well. The views from the windows were spectacular. Beautiful grounds to wander through, right at the banks of the loch and only a 2 minute stroll into Fort Augustus. If I could point one thing it would be that it should be clearer on the number of flights of stairs there are to reach the apartment. Whilst we knew being at the top of the tower there would be stairs, we got the impression you were able to park outside and climb the staircase, however this is not the case, you park at the other end of the building and then there are multiple flights up to the apartment and then more stairs inside. It did leave us out of breath and whilst no athlete, I would not have considered steps to be a reason not to book, but they were a challenge. Not taking away from the quality of the accomodation but perhaps just be clearer in the description on the amount of steps involved.

Unique property with great views

We enjoyed staying at 19 The Monastery Tower in Fort Augustus. It is part of the bell tower and enjoys great views out over Loch Ness from the living area. The apartment is just the right size for 2 people to be comfortable in and it was well equipped. Be warned, though there are lots of stairs to climb to get to the apartment. It is situated right next to the Loch on one side and the canal on the other, so we handy for heading in to Fort Augustus.

The Abbey, fort Augustus

Beautiful flat and amazing views but unfortunately we sitting down you can see out of the windows as they are too high!! The Abbey, despite its very disgusting and sad history of years gone is a beautiful place. The swimming pool was definitely a bonus on rainy days.

Lovely stay

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Monastery Tower. It is a smart, well maintained apartment within the monastery. It was very clean and had everything we needed. Milk, coffee, tea and biscuits are kindly supplied. Along with a few essential items like oil and salt and pepper. It is within easy walk of Fort Augustus and there are wonderful views of Loch Ness. We had a lovely stay.

A modern apartment in an old building

This apartment is right on the banks of Loch Ness, however there are limited views from the apartment itself. Be aware that as an old building there are no lifts so be prepared to carry your luggage up around 100 steps to get up to your apartment. The apartment itself is well equipped and modern with tea and coffee provided plus some toiletries. We particularly enjoyed the cruise we took out onto the Loch at sunset and also dinner at The Loch Inn.

Wonderful spot at the top of the monastery!

The apartment is well maintained and well equipped. The views of Loch Ness and the surrounding area are impressive. We enjoyed watching the sunset over the mountain tops from the living room. You should be aware that the only way to get there is by the steps... to be exact, there are 90 steps to the living area. It is well worth the climb!

Stunning.... just stunning!!

It was our first ever visit to Scotland.. celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The Abbey was just the perfect location, central for travelling around the highlands, the apartment was spotless, well presented, the lovely man who showed us round couldn't have been more helpful. We didn't get an opportunity to use the other facilities on site, there was just too much to see. It was just perfect.. what more can we say. We will certainly be back.

About the host

Hosted by Nick and Sarah

Host profile image
Sarah and I moved to Scotland in 2010 after some 15 years in London. At first I continued to commute down south for a few days each week and Sarah worked in Dundee. We now have a young family, I work in Edinburgh and we are both loving the lifestyle up here.

My family are originally from Scotland and we wanted somewhere more relaxing to live and with access to the countryside. It has been a great move for us and we are really well settled in now.

Why they chose this property

We bought the Monastery Tower in 2007 for a holiday apartment for ourselves whilst we were living in London. Very quickly the area became very special to us. We got married in Urquhart Castle and had our wedding reception in Fort Augustus.

Loch Ness is probably the most talked about strip of water in the world. "Nessie" may get most of the coverage the loch itself is truly beautiful and, whatever the weather, it is so peaceful looking across it at the hills and mountains.

But it's not all about the loch. The surrounding area is just as charming. There are so many interesting walks, many from the town itself and the sights are amazing.

What makes this property unique

St Benedict's Abbey was redeveloped as luxury holiday apartments a few years ago and named the Highland Club. The grounds are lovely, the architecture is stunning and its location is fantastic.

There are a number of facilities in the Abbey itself that guests can enjoy such as snooker (full size table), swimming, croquet, tennis and table tennis. Walking around the grounds is a real pleasure. There is a children's climbing frame.

All of the apartments in the Highland Club offer something special and they are all so different that there is probably no such thing as the "best" apartment. However, we bought the Monastery Tower as we wanted 360 degree views of the area and, in particular, an unrestricted view of Loch Ness. If it is views that you want, then you really won't find a better choice at the Abbey.

December 2017 UPDATE - the swimming pool renovations are complete and the pool in the Highlands Club is now open.
January 2018 UPDATE - The sauna and steam room renovations are complete and are now open.
