Perfect home from home

We love hebden and burnsall and feel super relaxed and refreshed (as much as you do with young kids) after a long weekend eating and walking in the local area. Perfect pad for our holiday, Thanks.

Mill Barn

Nice cosy cottage in a good location for visiting the Dales. Quiet and peaceful setting with walks from the door. Bedrooms are quite small with limited storage. Welcome goodies were a nice touch.

Great place to stay

Very comfortable barn wirh really lovely surroundings and walks from the door. Underfloor heating appreciated! Helpful hosts dealt with a small problem immediately. Ate out once at local hotel, The Clarendon, too chilly to use the nice outside decking, inside needs refreshing, food, average.

September @Millbarn

Enjoyable stay , remote location, good facilities . Ideal for walking & birdwatching, lots of walks without using car . Access is down some narrow lanes & you have to reverse in & out when parking at the property. It rained quite a bit & it’s fair to say the car needed a good clean on return home . The shower in the bathroom requires some attention as black mould was evident + the kitchen worktop / tiles needs resealing . The double bed whilst comfortable creaks quite a lot most noteable when we wrinklies have to visit the toilet during the night ! A great place to stay just needs tidying up a bit

Peace & Tranquility

Our stay at Mill barn was wonderful. the cottage provided everything needed for our stay. We are from Australia and coming from the warm mild weather to cool weather the cottage was so cosy. The position of the cottage was perfect. Walks along the Dales Track were so pleasant. The walks along the river were not difficult and the destinations were lovely villages with fine eating places. The cottage was also close to York which is one of the most fascinating places we have visited in England. The Lake District and Yorkshire area is just fabulous with quaint villages and many walking tracks. The town of Skipton is also so worth a trip with the castle and abbey near by. A highly recommended experience.

Mill Barn

We have stayed at Mill Barn several times as we find it perfect for our needs. It is a great location for walking (right on the River Wharfe) for all types of walks from leasurely river walks to moorland and hill walking. Good also for visiting other villages/areas of the Dales and beyond. A good choice of places for eating out, including our special favourite, The Angel at Hetton. The Barn is clean, well equipped and furnished and so comfortable for staying in on those odd Yorkshire bad weather days! The owners have looked after us well including a generous welcome pack of wine, homemade cake and flowers.

A perfect holiday cottage!

Another lovely week spent at Mill Barn, we have stayed here several times and find it to be a perfect cottage in a perfect location. The welcome pack was very much appreciated, wine, flowers and even home made cake. The owners are just a phone call away and are always there to help with anything. It's warm and cosy, very clean and comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipped and there is a lovely outdoor seating area with great views of the beautiful countryside and River Wharfe. Great location for walks straight from the door. Looking forward to our next visit and we would highly recommend this cottage!!! There are lots of walks straight from the door

Cosy barn in a breathtaking location

The barn is situated in farmland, a stone's throw from the Hebden suspension bridge over the River Wharfe. There are stunning views in all directions and it is fabulously peaceful (apart from normal farm sounds of course!). It's a 15 minute walk uphill to the lovely village of Hebden, and you can stroll along the river to Burnsall (1 mile), or Grassington via the lovely Linton Falls (2 miles). The house itself is well equipped, comfortable and cosy - we had all we needed for a very enjoyable week's stay. The hosts were communicative and helpful, via messaging. (We did see them).

Perfect setting

The setting was perfect and the cottage cosy and warm. Mainly clean and tidy with nice furnishings. Directions given were good and we accessed the property with no problem. We arrived to lovely biscuits and some logs to get us going but only 1 match in the match box. It felt odd that we didn't meet the hosts but perhaps that is the usual process. I know it would be probably more to keep clean but we felt some more local bits and pieces and perhaps old photos of the area on the walls would add to the feel of the place. Couple of issues which we feel should be addressed and we hope taken in good faith: The taps in the bathroom could do with a good clean as there was a lot of black scum around where the taps join the sink which was rather off putting. The shower trap was broken and dirty water inside. The bath had a 20p size chip in it which we feel could be touched up. We found 2 spoons stuck together with some tomato sauce which wasn't nice. The kitchen tap had a slow leak at the bottom. We tried our best to clean before we left but the Henry vacuum just didn't suck well. The dustpan had a bent edge so hard to sweep up effectively. The heating seemed to came on at 3am which was very noisy upstairs and we had a couple of disturbed nights due to this. The only way we could resolve it was to turn the radiators off at night. Shame as it was such a peaceful spot. We opened the patio doors for a short while and then struggled to get them closed.

Perfect location

It is a fabulous property and the location is perfect. I would say that WiFi would be a very useful addition. I realise that some people don’t want gadgets on holiday but that’s their choice. They don’t have to use them. I would like to use my phone without using all my data. Apart from that, we had everything we could want there.

Compact cottage in superb location

The cottage is compact, no frills and well equipped for a stay with family. We found a good level of cleanliness - a few cobwebs here and there and a bit more dusting would make it spot on but it certainly didn’t bother us. Linens and towels were immaculate and good quality. Kitchen is well equipped with a good range of pans, dishes and utensils. Plenty of dishcloths and towels too and the knives were sharp (always a pet peeve of mine in holiday houses)! A stock of basics would be good - oil and spices for example. Bathroom was clean and came with plenty of towels and bath mats. The one thing missing was loo roll so make sure you bring some. I’m not sure if this was an oversight and there was a lovely welcome tray with milk, tea, coffee, sugar and flapjacks so it felt like maybe loo roll had been forgotten rather than not supplied? Location of the cottage is amazing. Plenty of parking, a small patio and gravelled area but you are surrounded by fields and it’s a couple of minutes down to the Hebden suspension bridge. From there it’s an easy walk to Burnsall or Grassington. You can also walk up to Hebden and the lovely tea room there (highly recommended- bakewell slices were amazing!) The surrounds are just beautiful and we enjoyed watching the rabbits / sheep / pheasants every day in the fields around. Things that would improve this cottage - new beds. We really struggled with sleep quality on very squeaky and hard beds to the extent we left the afternoon before check out to avoid another sleepless night. And finally an updated information pack - it had a lot of info from 2019 and it wasn’t clear what day was bin day etc.

Relaxing stay in beautiful countryside

This was our second stay at the property and we are likely to stay again. It was spotlessly clean and ideal for a couple. Beautifully quiet and with nature right on your doorstep. Twice a day the cows are taken past the cottage to and from their field. Rabbits frolic in the adjacent field. You can walk along the River Wharfe into the neighbouring villages of Grassington and Burnsall. There are many great pubs but we would recommend the Red Lion at Burnsall and the Devonshire at Grassington. Facilities are excellent. We had a wonderful stay and will be back.

About the host

Hosted by Helen & Gavin Herd

Host profile image
The Mill Barn is owned and run by the Herd family, with day to day running undertaken by myself and my wife Helen.

I work and live on the family dairy farm situated in Hebden village alongside my parents whilst Helen works full time in Skipton as well as taking care of our two young children.

Why they chose this property

Up until 2009 this outlying barn was used to store hay for feeding the sheep and cattle on the family farm but was increasingly redundant given its distance from the main farmstead. Given its proximity to the River Wharfe and its accessibility to the many footpaths, the decision was taken to diversify and convert the barn into a holiday let. After a very busy 9 months (much of the internal work was undertaken by the family) the barn was ‘up and running’ for Christmas 2009 – just!

What makes this property unique

The Barn is always warm and cosy and its peaceful position means it’s a perfect place to relax. The original beams, large stone fireplace and ‘forking hole’ windows all add character to what is a clean and clutter free property. Every season has its own attractions but Summer is our favourite. The abundance of wildlife on the river (a Kingfisher is regularly spotted), the dairy cows grazing in fields locally (often commented upon by children) and the farmers locally gathering in silage and hay from local meadows.
