Doc Martin fans will not be disappointed!

If your a Doc Martin fan, and even if your not, the house, setting, and proximity to Port Isaac will not disappoint. Although the interior scenes were filmed elsewhere the interior is very warm and cozy and is very relaxing.Yes, you will have fans stopping and taking pictures. Some may even try to enter so key the doors locked. We had a wonderful stay and highly recommend it!

Room with a view

Overall a lovely property. Comfortable beds. Stunning views from the bedroom windows. The hot water was dissapointing, only having enough for one shower and then a 30-60 minute wait. Shirley (owner) did say it was a new system and they were looking to upgrade it.

Lovely cottage and stunning views.

We loved the cottage. It was extremely clean and comfortable I especially appreciated the crisp bed linen! The views are stunning and we can highly recommend The Mote and The Old Schoolhouse restaurants in Port Isaac. Do expect a lot of tourists taking photos outside the cottage. And don’t forget to lock the door once inside as we had a couple of tourists take photos at the front door and then try the handle and open it!

Dream ComeTrue

To stay in Fern Cottage was magic. We loved sitting on the landing upstairs and watching the harbour. It’s a lot more private up there. The passing tourists are annoying, especially when they come up the front steps and hang around, leaning on the dining room window.

Excellent

Had a lovely few days here. A couple of issues promptly sorted by Shirley. Lovely property with beautiful views of the harbour in a great position. Very warm with everything you need. Didn’t attempt the parking but did drive around to drop the luggage off and parked in the top car park about a five minute walk up a hill (can take a more scenic sea view route that is flatter but takes longer) although apart from the tight opening at the end of the street it wasn’t as bad as I feared - small car better Expect a lot of people taking photos outside but it wasn’t a problem and quite amusing Would stay again

Perfect Honeymoon!

Absolutely beautiful property in a picture postcard village! Warm and comfortable, beautifully furnished and with views to die for. The Landlady couldn’t have been mote helpful with tips and suggestions to give us a perfect stay. Even when the weather (Storm Ciàran) hit! It was a perfect snug bolthole to watch the storm, drink tea and enjoy! Can’t fault it!

Great stay

Two adults and a 2.5 year old stayed 4 nights in October 2023. We loved it. The location is terrific and the home itself is lovely. It was very comfortable and warm/dry, which came in very handy for the chilly rainy evenings. Driving to the cottage wasn’t as difficult as we’d feared, though pretty tight in spots. We also enjoyed meeting folks coming to see the house and take photos because of Doc Martin. We met a lot of interesting and friendly folks this way.

Great!

Of course, this place is a must if you are a Doc Martin fan. It is clean and well cared for. The only draw back for me is that it is very musty. Not sure what you can do about that. Maybe a dehumidifier? We were easily able to air it out by opening all the windows, but were fortunate enough to have great weather that made that possible. I recommend this place for sure unless you have asthma or other breathing issues or allergies.

Beautiful place

The cottage is lovely and the village is amazing. . We parked in the New Road car park and walked to the cottage which was much better than trying to negotiate driving in Port Issac. The cottage was lovely and cosy and while there were people taking pictures outside I just kept the blinds closed and it was fine.

What a view!

A treat to stay at Fern Cottage again. Everything was as I remember it from 2015. Our weather was on the chilly side and the heat only worked in the dining room. The trash was attacked by sea gulls - picked it up several times - needed more trash bags and an outside container to keep gulls away. The key box is not at the back door, but past the door and in the back of the cottage. Overall a very pleasant stay.

Fantastic

What an amazing experience. We felt like a celebrity with paparazzi outside! Fantastic stay, beautiful cottage. We had a slight problem with the hot water and after contacting Shirley it was all sorted within half an hour. A great place for any Doc Martin fan or a base for a gorgeous Cornwall break with stunning views out of every window.

Classic Cornish Cottage

Traditional little cottage that has been thoughtfully renovated to include modern kitchen & bathroom. Wonderful harbour views, and walking distance to the centre of the village. We really appreciated the comfortable beds, quality linen, off-street parking, gorgeous views, and central heating that kept the cottage cosy warm. Oh ... and very fast Wifi! I learned that for my car, parking was best done by reversing in, and driving out. May not work for everyone! I only found out after we arrived that the action of much of Doc's story took place on a film set, but the outside is exactly as pictured. Thank you for a very memorable stay!

Quaint cottage overlooking the harbor

We arrived a bit late but had no problem finding the cottage nor checking in. Typical of the other properties in the area parking is tight and I wish that we had brought a smaller car. The one issue that we had was taken care of promptly and the communication response time with Shirley was amazingly quick. We look forward to our next trip to the area to explore more of the surrounding countryside

Excellent Stay

This is a great property, but the constant flow of tourists becomes a little overwhelming over time - if only it hadn't been made so famous by a particular doctor - but then again, that's why you're here, isn't it?

Lovely outlook

The cottage is nicely kitted out and there are lovely sea views from almost every window. There are many Doc Martin fans who like their picture taken by the cottage, so keep the blinds shut if you don’t want to see them; it didn’t bother us. Please know it is a sharp turn into Roscarrock Hill and it is extremely narrow for driving in places so it is very difficult for a large car unless you are an expert. The plus side is there is rarely traffic past your door so the evenings and nights are lovely and quiet and with the window open you can hear the sea. Port Isaac is a village full of character in its own right. There is very little car parking in the village, therefore the New Road car park just outside is best for cars. The only supermarket is the Co-Op which is not far from the main car park just mentioned. However there are eateries in the village so you shouldn’t go hungry or thirsty if you don’t bring much food with you. We loved staying there.

Great stay at an iconic location

Staying in Port Isaac at Doc Martin's surgery was a dream come true. We had a wonderful time. The location in town can't be beat. The house was clean and the beds were comfy. I would recommend this location to anyone considering a trip to Cornwall. A few things I would be aware of.. The house is the most popular tourist stop in town so be prepared for a nonstop parade of people looking in the windows and taking pictures of the house. Also, for an American, the hot water system for the shower was a mystery, we only had hot water showers once, the first day. There are no screens on the windows so you will get bugs in the house if you leave them open, but not nearly as many as you would in America of you had no screens. The doorways are all very short, I hit my head several times even though I tried to keep ducking all the time. Overall, we loved the visit and we hope to visit again in the future.

Beautiful

Had a lovely stay here, yes it needs a lot doing to it but you are going for the location more than anything else. Absolutely beautiful view but yes there is a constant stream of people outside taking pictures etc but that’s to be expected. Very tight roads and parking so definitely would not recommend taking a big car but overall a beautiful place to stay .

A lovely week in Port Isaac

We booked the Fern Cottage because of it’s location, view from the house and because it looked so pretty. We found out after booking that Fern cottage has also been used in the Doc Martin TV series. The view from the main bedroom is the best in the house and this is a lovely room. The twin bedroom is very pleasant and has a clear view of the harbour. A sink in this room was helpful as there were four adults staying in this house and only one bathroom (there is a second lavatory downstairs). The dining room comfortably seats four people and there are French doors to the side of the house, where we sat outside in the morning enjoying the view. The lounge is comfortable. The kitchen is small but fully equipped and has pots, pans and utensils but we couldn’t find any scales so had to guess quantities- but that wasn’t really a problem. The garden behind the house is reached via a series of very steep steps to flattish lawn terraces where we enjoyed sitting. The grass has been cut but all the surrounds are fairly wild. The view to the harbour is spectacular. Port Isaac is a lovely little village with a range of shops and excellent restaurants and cafés. All of these are only a few minutes walk from the house. Driving in Port Isaac is exactly as has been described, a challenge! There is a parking space outside the house, and fits a small car, but our long, low car was was unable to go up the incline to it. We parked up the hill in the New Road carpark, about 10 minutes walk from the house. This was no problem and we enjoyed walking various routes up through the village or along the footpath with the sea views. Shirley is a good host and responded to emails promptly. There is a local housekeeper who quickly arrived after contacting. Having featured in the TV series Doc Martin, people look at the front of the house all day long. There are two village walks a day and the tour leader stands in front talking. We got used to people standing in front of the windows and front doors taking selfies. There are Venetian blinds and these can be tilted so that sightseers do not see inside. Unfortunately, the house whilst lovely is a little tired. It is also for sale. Nonetheless, despite minor niggles, the house is comfortable and the location is very hard to beat!

Disappointing

The view from the property over Port Isaac and the harbour is stunning. The property is well equipped and the beds very comfortable. Sadly the property needs some attention. Chipped and dirty paintwork throughout the cottage, chipped and cracked tiles on the bathroom floor, a dirty stair carpet that was in desperate need of a clean. The towels, although freshly laundered were like cardboard and the towelling robes were grubby. The headrest on the armchair in the sitting room was badly stained and the remaining seating offered no comfort. I expected a lot of interest in the property but It was like living in a fish bowl, people peering in through the windows even though my car was parked outside. Sadly there is no garden furniture or seating in the terraced garden at the back.

Why they chose this property

Pet friendly but please check with owner before booking

‘Fern Cottage’ occupies an incredible, highly-coveted, elevated setting overlooking Port
Isaac harbour, the village and out to sea. Every principal room takes full advantage of the truly gorgeous views across the historic and picturesque harbour. This is an exceedingly desirable and sought-after area of North Cornwall, with close proximity to such well-known villages as Rock, Trebetherick, Polzeath and also within easy reach of Boscastle and Tintagel.

What makes this property unique

Unique. location above the harbour of Port Isaac

Port Isaac is a truly wonderful ‘old’ village, which has remained unspoiled with the passage of time, with slate-roofed cottages lining the narrow lanes and alleyways which wind down the side of the steep valley to the harbour. Two noticeable features are Temple Bar – recorded as the narrowest thoroughfare in the world and known locally as ‘Squeeze Belly
Alley’ and the ‘Bird-Cage’ – so named because of its unusual shape; it was used at one
time as a cobblers’ shop and is now owned by the National Trust. There is a thriving
village community with shops, restaurants, school and doctors’ group practice and further facilities catering for everyday needs.
