About this property

Farmhouse with private pool & fishing lake

Les Vachers is a stone built farmhouse dating back to the 16C. The large veranda offers a covered dining area for those lazy barbecues. Both the terrace and pool are floodlit to extend those relaxing evenings outside. The house is spacious with a well equipped updated kitchen with a range style cooker. The two double bedrooms each have their own en suite bathrooms. One of the twin bedded rooms is on the ground floor with a shower room next to it. The farmhouse is in a peaceful location set in 10 hectares of land. The south facing pool overlooks the private fishing lake which is well stocked with large carp up to 20lbs. Use of the fishing lake is included in your stay at no extra charge. The 18 hole public golf course and leisure complex of Chateau les Vigiers is less than 10 minutes away. This holiday villa with it's private pool is ideal for those family get togethers or groups of friends chilling out.
Whether it is making restaurant recommendations or reservations for you, arranging for you to dine under the stars at a local chateau, a pampering session with a local beautician or simply arranging baby sitting we are here to make your holiday truly enjoyable.
With the owners being on hand we can organise a range of additional activities or services for you.

Fishing: The large well stocked lake offers carp, rud, roach and perch.
Carp of up to 20lbs have been caught in the lake. They have been well fed and offer easy fishing for children and fun for all the family. A large hunk of bread on the end of a line is normally all you need.

General Information: The summer season in the Dordogne offers hundreds of different events from town to town. Bergerac alone has 10 different events ranging from fireworks on the 14 July to long weekends of wine and food festivals.
There are various night markets in July and August all within an easy drive.
The local restaurants range from 4 course set lunches with wine to the 4 star restaurant at Chateau les Vigiers.
There is lots of information available and the owner is on hand to give you his personal advice.

Wine: Les Vachers is at the heart of the wine growing region. Bordeaux and St Emilion to the west and Bergerac to the north.
There are hundreds of wine producing chateaux in the area, many of whom offer free tasting. The owner is on hand to give his advice and to direct you to the award winning vineyards in the area.

Great Fishing shame about the WIFI

We stayed in a vintage property with very caring and conscientious owners who more or less live on site and are always on hand to listen to and resolve little issues that occur. They do all they can to ensure you have a great holiday. They could not have been more helpful and caring. Well done both. The fishing was fantastic my wife had never been fishing before but on the first day she caught a carp of about 18lb bigger than any fish I have ever caught. The main issue that couldn't be resolved is that this gite does not have wifi in the house and as a small business operator that was a problem for me and my clients. I have made a suggestion how the wifi issue could be resolved. Everything else was really good. Facilities in the "Small" Vaches all worked well the pool was clean and well maintained. We had a lovely holiday in a quiet interesting rural area populated by many Brits . Low mark for the advertising because of the wifi and the confusing issue of all the houses being called "Vaches" There is (1) a big one attached to(2) the one Alan and Sandra live in and then there is(3)the smaller one we stayed in. These should be identified clearly on the website many of the pictures used are the same and I am sure some confusion is caused. I would be confident that (1) does have wifi because it is attached to (2) but (3) doesn't have wifi it is out of range. Electricity to all three houses is from the same source a fuse in one knocks all 3 out. The rental properties (1) and (3) could be called "big" vaches and "little" vaches which is easier to identify than just a property listing number. So come on Home and Away sort this out. I thought I had booked a house with WIFI but I hadn't and that is disappointing . Alan and Sandra deserve better than this !!

Excellent time in Thénac

We had a fabulous week in a lovely place to stay. A single week really wasn’t long enough. Wonderful area and lots to do. Ran out of time... much to do with the great pool and access to golf - kids had a great time. Some top recommendations of local markets to visit and places to go. Felt like we got the inside track on what to see and do, for which much thanks. Will definitely return to the Dordogne and wouldn’t hesitate to stay in Thénac again. Thank you for such a warm welcome.

Lovely gite in beautiful location

We absolutely loved staying at Les Vachers. Set in beautiful countryside, with a very clean and well maintained pool (our boys loved it!), the house was very clean and well appointed. Sandra and Alan were very helpful, suggesting day trips and letting us have a go at fishing from their lake - this was really fun! Excellent day trips to Castelnaud, nearby Château Bridoire, Sarlat and Bergerac. We were made to feel very welcome and will certainly be recommending the gite to others and hope to return. The boys were particularly taken by Husky and Vanille the two very friendly dogs!

Relaxing family escape

We were a family of 4 with a 9 and 7 year old and Alan and Sandra’s villa was absolutely perfect for us. There was plenty of room for us all both inside and outside. The pool was gorgeous and we spent lots of time relaxing around it and jumping in it while the proximity of the lake meant both husband and kids could happily flit between the 2. Lots of fish were caught and the whole setting and location were very peaceful. Alan and Sandra gave us lots of local tips of what was happening during the week so we were able to experience lots of local activities such as a wine festival at the local Château and great places to go for dinner. We’d recommend this place wholeheartedly and would go back for sure.

Pleasant late summer rural stay

We were a group of six adults, who very much enjoyed our stay at Thénac. The house was well equipped, in a lovely rural setting and the owners Alan and Sandra live close by and were always available to offer advice and solve the minor issues we had.The surrounding scenery including the lake was very attractive and we enjoyed visiting local towns of interest.

Rustic accommodation with good outside space and facilities, in quiet part of rural France.

We had a very relaxing stay and the owners were extremely helpful. Family of 6 including adult children looking for peace and quiet but perhaps a little too far away from good local restaurants etc for the young people. Car essential but there are good amenities within 15 minutes drive. The accommodation is spacious, but quite rustic, and has somewhat idiosyncratic plumbing upstairs. Good sized kitchen with all the necessary appliances. Wi-fi a little unreliable and not available in the house itself. Husband thoroughly enjoyed the access to fishing; cycling challenging but enjoyable for the exercise fanatics in the family and pitch and putt was diverting but watch out for snakes! Pool of a good size but if the weather is very hot (as it was while we were there) some parasols would be a welcome addition to provide shade.

A great find

A wonderful area - picture-postcard scenery with rolling hills, vinyards and woods. The house is part of a small hamlet but very much tucked away. Alan and Sandra excellent hosts with lots of good suggestions for things to do in the area. Golf was great fun. Perfect for all standards - and all the more enjoyable for having our private course. And the fishing - you actually catch fish... big ones!

A beautiful farmhouse situated in an amazing setting.

The holiday as a whole was one we will never forget - it was beautiful! The farmhouse was located in the most idyllic setting, overlooking the private pool, golf course and fishing lake. On arrival we were welcomed by Sandra and Alan who were both lovely. They showed us round and offered help and advice on places to visit etc, and throughout our stay they were on hand if you needed anything. The house itself had everything that you could possibly need, (and more). The location of the house is in a quiet, peaceful setting, but is not too far away from small towns, the supermarket, and other local attractions. However a car is essential. We would certainly, without any hesitation, book to stay here again. We had an amazing time and we now hope that one day soon we too could have a place in France of our own. Thank you Alan and Sandra !

Characterful property away from the hustle and bustle of life! The hosts were fantastic!

Alan and Sandra where wonderful hosts along with their very friendly and well behaved dogs, in a beautiful area of France, the fishing lakes were very well stocked and easy to catch in, the house itself was very tidy and provided everything needed but to be honest you wanted To spend all your day outsie either chilling on the property or exploring the French countryside and nearby towns

Enchanting, spacious accommodation, had all the facilities a family or group could want.

Although a little isolated it gave us the peace and tranquillity that we were looking for. The pool was a good size and the fishing and golf were an added bonus. Alan and Sandra were the perfect hosts, friendly and very helpful, booking restaurants and recommending places to visit. We thoroughly enjoyed the daily visits from the two dogs!. A delightful holiday and would not hesitate recommending to others.

Great, relaxing holiday in the sun 😎☀️

We had a great week. Alan and Sandra were very helpful when needed without being intrusive. The farmhouse was very clean and comfortable. There were eight of us with ages ranging from 15 to 70 and we all enjoyed our stay. We particularly enjoyed the private pool and the outdoor eating area. The weather was superb too!! We really enjoyed eating out at Le Code Bar in Sigoules and the evening market in Duras. St. Emillion was also lovely if a little crowded and commercialised, however the views from the tower were stunning. Thank you for a great week!

The perfect getaway for relaxation.

Thanks for a lovely relaxing week. All facilities as advertised. Alan & Sandra very helpful. Fishing excellent (a decent sized landing net would be advisable) Very hot week - downstairs rooms cool but upstairs very hot at night (air con?). Would love to return again and bring some friends. Thank you very much.

Fantastic property

property exceeded our expectations. Our family used both houses for 2 weeks and we all loved it. Alan, Sanda and Husky the dog were perfect hosts. The houses and gardens had everything we needed and the pools were great. We all enjoyed the golf and fishing and the weather was perfect. The property was so good we hardly left it, we enjoyed BBQs most evenings and spent most of our time outdoors. Day trips to Bergerac and St Emilion were enjoyable and we had some nice meals in the local villages. We would recommend this property to anybody looking for a relaxing holiday in beautiful, peaceful surroundings. It is impossible for children of any age to be bored with the pool, golf and fishing. We will return!

Stunning, magnifique 2 weeks 😄

A fantastic 2 weeks at Les Vachers with welcoming hosts who were great from the first minute to last. Great Gite, loads of room for the 6 of us (4 adults and two youngsters), enjoyed the spacious kitchen which Colin (our trained chef!) made the most of! Great open verandah area for outdoor eating....... The pool is great, perfect for everyone which is even floodlit for some late night dipping.... The lake is superb, great fishing for all.....we all caught carp, even my 10 year old daughter. With it being across the lane from the Gite, those of us who wanted to fish could do so but still be in close proximity to those chilling at the Gite or round the pool :-).......Oh, the golf as well, yes, again free for all and perfect for all ages or abilities. Alan & Sandra have two lovely dogs, 'Vannie' and 'Husk' - all I would say is if your on the course and Husk is about, don't expect to finish your round with the same ball, if you get my drift 😊😄.....Husk has the taste for golf balls ! Lovely villages around, Sigoules has all you need really, and Bergerac is great for Sunday lunch and a peaceful boat trip down the Dordogne. Unfortunately my 10 year old girl was poorly whilst we were away and we had to go to Bergerac hospital. We came away with antibiotics but later that night and in the early hours, Lilly was poorly and feeling worse. We woke Sandra up at 2am as we could not get through to the out of hours Dr and Sandra was brilliant, she drove us to Bergerac in the early hours and got us seen again and we were given further antibiotics. I cannot praise Sandra and Alan enough for their kind welcome and help throughout our stay. We will be back in 2015....... cannot wait! Jason, Ali, Olly, Lilly, Colin & Joan

Wonderful Relaxing Holiday

We had a wonderful time. Relaxation was the order of the day and Les Vachers was perfect for that. Lovely spacious character house. Nice and cool in the warm days, Great fishing and the golf was a bonus. the kids loved the pool and the dogs, and there were plenty of beds and bathrooms to go round. The facilities were excellent with loads of extras and Alan and Sandra were great hosts ...always on hand and very relaxed. Sigoules was no distance with couple of places to eat, market and a good supermarket. Bergerac is only 20 minutes if you want something more to do ...the Maison Du Vins is well worth a visit. A bit worried about recommending the place as we want to go back and want there to be places available !!!!

Brilliant holiday

We had a fabulous holiday in Les Vachers last week. The house is spacious and kept very clean. The pictures on the internet do not do this fairytale house justice. We felt like we truly lived in rural France for a week (with all comfort accounted for). Alan and Sandra are magnificent hosts and will look after you throughout your stay. The dogs are a bonus! Our kids already miss them after having returned to Holland just yesterday. Golf and fishing are a welcome extra, but even without these, the house is perfect. We highly recommend this property to everyone. We hope to return with our family next year.

French Idyll

The house and facilities are as described in the listing, The house was clean and all was in working order, beds were comfortable and we had everything we needed and more for a very pleasant stay. The fishing and golfing were very entertaining and it was very good that they were included in the price. Sandra and Alan are gracious hosts and very helpful whenever needed. We are happily recommending this property to all our friends and are hopefully going to return soon in a bit to catch "moby dick" the monster carp.!! The two dogs are exuberant and like to spend time with the guests, (watch out for your golf balls when Husk is out!) however if not "dog people" Sandra and Alan will happily keep them in their run. Overall a brilliant , relaxing holiday.

Holiday

We had a fabulous 2 weeks staying at Les Vachers. The cottage was great and provided everything we needed. Sandra, Alan and JJ made us very welcome and looked after us very well. My 2 boys loved the golf and caught lots of fish. The pool was great and close enough to the house to keep an eye on the kids. We loved the Issigeac Sunday market, the St Foy Saturday market and the Tuesday evening night market at Eymet. Canoed from Bergerac to Gardonne which was very enjoyable and peaceful. And visited a number of local wine estates (Our best locally were Chateau Belingard and Les Brandeaux). I would recommend this property.

Characterful, Simple and Friendly

Old French Farmhouse in need of some maintenance, but simple and clean, not luxurious. Proximity of enclosed pool to house and covered verandah, good for children and families. Lake and small golf course across the road from the house lovely for children's activities after a day out. Fairly isolated, with closest good markets within 20 minute drive at Issigeac on Sunday morning and St Foye Le Grande, Saturday morning. Also nearby in Pomport, Chateau Bellingard for wines. Highly recommended, excellent restaurant, 'Famille Moutier' within 3 minutes of house for incredible French cuisine and wine, excellent service and very child friendly. Well worth booking! Owners very helpful and welcoming, along with their 2 big dogs! The local recreational airfield can produce some weekend noise pollution.

Having just returned from our 2 weeks at the gite I must say the house is very well equipped. The living room is very comfortable and large and is plenty big enough for 8 people as is the well equipped kitchen. The bedrooms are all of a good size and the beds are comfortable. The pool area is lovely, the small pool was idea for our 14 month old grandson. Sandra checked on the pool regularly and it was kept very clean. We all had a go at the golf and really enjoyed it. The fishing was good and we managed to catch a fish (more by luck than anything else!) Alan was on hand to give help when required. I would highly recommend this property. Alan and Sandra have gone to a great deal of trouble to make this a 'home from home' Many thanks to Alan & Sandra for the effort they put into making sure you have a good holiday.

August 2010

We have enjoyed 2 weeks in August 2010 at this lovely gite. The owners, Sandra and Alan, were very helpful both on arrival and for the duration of the stay. The surrounding area is beautiful and Sandra and Alan gave us good advice so that we made the most of our stay. The pool is lovely and very clean. The house has everything that you need and all towels and bed linen are provided. The golf was an added bonus and was well utilised during our stay. My dad even got the first ever hole in one. The fishing was good. Clear areas at the side of the lake meant that the fisherman didn't get tangled up and were also near enough to the property not to miss out on an early evening beer. The owners son, JJ, was very pleasant and our children enjoyed making a friend. We also befriended the local kittens and the children and my husband thoroughly enjoyed feeding them and watching them grow. All in all a very relaxing and pleasurable holiday.

August 2009

If you want a quite location to relax and unwind this is the place and with beautiful countryside all around. House was tidy with all you need and more than enough room for 8. Huge outdoor table, great BBQ and grassed area big enough for fun with the kids. Pool big enough to jump, dive, swim or just relax in - plus a little header pool to paddle/sun bath in. Fishing lake provided plenty of carp from both the top and bottom up to 9lbs with the promise of bigger. Golf course was lovingly looked after and lots of fun for young and old alike. No formality - just grab a few clubs, balls and have a whack around. Lots to do in the local area and beyond. Alan & Sandra were great hosts, helped out whenever we needed anything (setting up the TV with the Wii, replacement gas.......) Came around with bottles of wine for our friends 40th birthday and shared a few beers chatting in the sun with Alan who has plenty of stories to tell! Gave some useful tips on places to go and things to do. Sigoules for the evening village food fair and St Foy saturday market are musts, canoe the river, wine chateaux......you get the idea. Although didn't move from the pool for the first 4 days!!! Lots of happy memories - thanks.
