About this property

The Lady Maxwell Room at Buittle Castle, Arts & Crafts Room in a Medieval Castle

Beautifully appointed, the Lady Maxwell Room at Buittle Castle offers the experience of staying in a working, privately owned Scottish Castle. The room is on the ground floor, with its own private access to the courtyard (with one step) and its own ensuite bathroom with shower. Full Scottish or Continental Breakfast is included, and is served in the room. We aim to offer the guests a true 'country house' experience.

As part of our effort to reduce our environmental impact, gourmet tea and coffee are provided by the house manager upon request.

The site which the present tower occupies was once the inner bailey of the medieval Buittle Castle, one of Scotland's royal castles and twice capital of Scotland. Buittle was home to Lady Devorguilla of Galloway and the Bailliol Dynasty, and later a Jacobite stronghold of the Gordon and Maxwell families, who re-constructed the original 13th Century keep into the present L-plan tower, c.1500. Buittle Castle, unlike many such buildings, remains very much a working building, and so retains the 'feel' that these buildings had when first built, surrounded by formal gardens, livestock, vegetable growing and pleasure grounds. It is currently home to James, the 24th great grandson of Lady Devorguilla, and his cousin Tobias, who have re-acquired the castle after roughly 60 years of it being out of family ownership. The site is also home to a working printing office specialising in craft letterpress printing and bookbinding, and a medieval chapel, with an interesting Jacobite history, in which services are regularly celebrated in the pre-reformation Use of Sarum.

Disappointing

By its nature the accommodation fitted in with castle but it was tired and needed attention. We lost sight of the number of cobwebs which had been there for some time. The bathroom sink was badly cracked the toilet seat needed replaced and there was black mould along the edge of the bottom of the shower the accommodation was cold when we arrived and took several hours for the room to be acceptably warm. We have pictures of all the issues we have highlighted. Just to finish Tobias could not have been more helpful but with these many issues this is not somewhere we could recommend

Fabulous. Historic. Comfortable.

Such a great and unusual, quirky stay in a small castle. Steeped in history - but with a hot tub! Excellent communications, delicious well-cooked food and a great hall to eat it in, to boot. Unforgettable and highly recommended.

Incredibly Relaxing Experience

We had the privilege of staying 6 nights at Buittle Castle. We were looking for a quiet stay in the country with access to local gardens and castles. This property provided everything we were looking for. James, Tobias, and Tim were exceptional from check in to check out. Breakfasts were excellent and the two dinner meals we had at the castle were so much more than we expected. The meals were 5 star and served in the Great Hall. Wow, what an experience! We recommend this bed & breakfast to anyone who wants a peaceful country experience.

Buittle Castle stay

A very enjoyable stay in a unique property. Very congenial host and staff. However, we would have liked a TV and tea/coffee making facilities in the room although this was provided by request. Breakfast was very nice, freshly cooked though dining room would have benefitted from some heating.

A special week at Buittle Castle with private dining and afternoon tea

We had the most wonderful week in the Lady Maxwell Room. Tim, James, Tobias and Angus made our stay a special one. Tim and the team ensured we had plenty of ideas for things to do during our stay, even considering physical limitations for us. Tim ensures the bedrooms are immaculate with lovely touches through the week, even making an arrangement out of the peacock feathers Perry the Peacock was depositing around the grounds which I had collected. There is an excellent choice for breakfast, including vegetarian options, using local or home grown produce and Tim yet again manages to take excellent to another level with the thought taken about the food, it's presentation and the setting of the table. We were extremely lucky to have a private dining experience in the medieval banquet hall. It was nothing short of superb. Do not miss out if you get the chance to book this or onto a medieval banquet evening. The tour and afternoon tea was wonderful. I could continue writing so much about the staff, grounds, print shop, tea room and much more. Go and visit - you will be so pleased that you did! We are missing our perfect getaway to this wonderful part of Scotland already and cannot wait to return. With much love, Bernie and Barry x

Wonderful night away

We stayed in October 2020, one night in the Lady Maxwell Room. The room was wonderful - a super comfy giant bed, our own private shower room with a fire place beside the table and chairs for an evening of board games. Our window looked out over the sunken garden which has obviously been a project of many hours labour and much loving attention and looked amazing. We had a clear evening for gazing at the stars, but during the night bad weather rolled in and the morning was very wet and windy so we didn't manage to explore the grounds, so all the more reason to return. We were served breakfast in our room in the morning because of the covid restrictions, which we loved. The food was delicious and took account of our dietry requirements easily. There was something decadent about being served breakfast in our own room in front of the fire while the weather was wild outside. Once we were fuelled with breakfast and packed up the weather cleared and we were perfectly located for mountain biking at one of the seven stanes. The hosts struck the perfect balance of letting us know that they were avaialable to help with anything, while still leaving us in peace to enjoy our trip. A fantastic break and we plan to book for next year again.

Amazing

The rooms, grounds, surroundings, food and last not least hospitality were all outstanding. We absolutely loved it. It's a gorgeous area of Scotland and every night we had a fire, just relaxing. The place is steeped in history and all the renovations keep this in mind (a sunken mideval garden, what!?) but no comforts are missed. Timothy is a star, the owners are lovely, the hairy Coos still make me swoon. Oh, and wait until you see the breakfast!

Food for the soul

Like stepping back 300 yrs to a time of great courtesy , and respect, .the bed chamber was as near to perfect as would be found in an arts and craft semi medieval dower house, with a period type/ modern ensuite. The lack of Tvs etc was SO SOOTHING. The sunken medieval gardens were lovely to sit in only rivalled by the beautiful river walks and bowers all very private and close by wooded hills

Lovely two day stay

Really enjoyed our stay, the place was beautifully done and very inkeeping with he age of the castle. They're doing lots of work to the property, it didn't disturb our stay at all but it clearly going to be beautiful once finished. The breakfast was superb and very well presented. Tim was helpful and always at hand if needed. We really enjoyed star gazing in the hot tub also.

Lords of the castle - almost

No other guests, they only currently rent out one double room, freedom, excellent breakfast. Sustainable attitude, jute/ wool carpets, linen napkins, home produced eggs and jam. Room is in a side part of the castle (ex-cow shed), but you won't get that impression once moved into your room. Bring a kettle, if you want to stay independent with your own cup of tea. Most Christian people will love it there. They are working on a Medieval Hall in another out building and trial their first straw bale cabin. Promising future developments. Rural, peaceful, quiet, steeped in history. The place to go, if you don't like a hotel room of the peg.

Beautiful, interesting and pleasant stay

Set in a beautiful area, the castle is a wonderful place to stay. The room itself is very spacious and decorated with a nod to the time it was originally functioning in. It has many interesting historical artefacts and paintings throughout. The system for ordering breakfast works well - you merely circle what you would like from a list of options on a printed menu and pop it under the door before midnight. The breakfasts were delicious and huge. The Scottish breakfast comprised of a choice from sausages, bacon, eggs (done how you like), potato slice, black pudding, haggis and beans and any combination of those. There was also an American breakfast consisting of cornmeal pancakes, syrup and bacon and eggs. And finally a croissant and toast with various jams etc. and free flowing tea and coffee. I tried each of the options on different days and they never disappointed. I felt bad not eating it all but the breakfasts were huge! They definitely set you up for the day which was great for us as we went on many walks in the area (at Galloway Forest Park, the Mull of Galloway and Threave Castle to name a few) and we never had any hunger pangs! Tobias was a brilliant host; he was attentive but without being overbearing. He was always on hand but never in your face and very polite. He showed us around the castle and, as history lovers, we had many other questions and he knew the history inside-out. It was a great tour. On one of the evenings we stayed, we also had dinner at the Castle which was wonderful. Delicious food, attentive service and just a lovely atmosphere to dine in. The hot tub was also a great perk to the place. I think we went in it almost every night we stayed after our long walks and it was always available. I’ve never been in a hot tub and had the pleasure of enjoying a gang of ducks waddling past and seeing some sheep up by the fence. It made the experience even better. We cannot fault the place and we will definitely be coming back.

This is a unique stay where you are, at present, the only 2 guests, in a place steeped in history. The two guys running it, Tobias and James, are fascinating to talk to, and will show you round other parts of the property like the chapel in the vault. There’s a print studio next door as well. The breakfast is massive and very good, all local produce. One tiny improvement would be to have tea and coffee making facilities in the room. You need a car or taxi to get there but Dalbeattie town is just 3-4 mins away with all facilities

A quirky, fun, interesting and romantic get away in a stunning location.

My partner and I were only looking for somewhere local to explore this lovely part of Southwest Scotland, but we got so much more than we were expecting as the stay turned out to be a major highlight of the three-day trip over the Easter bank holiday. The fantastic weather only enhanced the beautiful and historical setting that is Buittle Castle. The cousins James and Tobias are in the middle of a renovation project that can only be described as a “labour of love” so don’t be surprised to see people wandering around with wheel barrows and step ladders, hens clucking around the place, ducks waddling past in formation and horses cantering around the paddock – it doesn’t detract from the experience - only making you feel that you’re part of this amazing venture. Tobias took us on a tour of their printworks, the Chapel and parts of the castle which was a lovely experience. Beautifully printed breakfast cards, hot from their own printworks were presented to us daily - and what a breakfast! Locally-sourced produce like streaky bacon and sausages, a choice of duck or hens’ eggs, teamed with cornmeal pancakes and syrup, jumbo rolled-oat porridge served with delicious honey and homemade jams and soda bread, all presented on stunning chintz tableware and served in the medieval meets Arts and Crafts library. Cups of tea and coffee were only a bell press away – literally; James and Tobias were on hand with their corresponding watch that alerted them to our every need - a little bit of welcome anachronism. And to top it all off, we stargazed and the watched the orange moon rise over the trees from the comfort of the glorious hot tub. Fantastic!

Amazing Place to Stay - Stayed December 31st 2018 for 1 night

I cannot say enough good things about Buittle Castle. The room we stayed in was amazing. The wood burner kept us cosy while we spent the night chatting and playing cards. If you are looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life this is a perfect retreat. Tea and coffee is on request and is served on a silver tray almost reminding me of afternoon tea, by Tobias. We also breakfasted in the library again served in the same way. Within the library there are books of all ages and art work that all adds to the authenticity of the place. The fact that Tobias and his cousin have bought back their ancestral home is amazing, and are restoring it back to medieval times is just the icing on the cake. The attention to detail with antiques adorning every room makes it all the more a special place to stay. These guys are just starting out on the renovation and we are looking forward to seeing it progress over time. We will definitely be returning! Tobias took us on a tour of the main castle, which is currently their home and was happy to show us round. The grounds of the castle has a fully functional printing room which runs as a book binding service and classes. There is a chapel which has been restored which has amazing features. And a gift shop. We took a walk round the grounds looking at the gardens, and you can take a short walk round the old moat to see the ruins of the original castle. If you enjoy walking and the outdoors this area is great area to explore. A short drive to Rockcliffe where you can do beach walks and a short climb up to Mote of Mark (we watched the sunset from there). You can do a short walk to Kippford or an even shorter drive to Kippford which is a small harbour and if the tide is out you can walk over to Rough Island. We saw lots of bird watchers and there is a nature reserve nearby. A visit to either Dalbeattie or Castle Douglas is a nice drive out. We ate in Castle Douglas as it is the bigger of the two and has more variety. In a nutshell if you like places steeped in history this is the perfect place to stay and the welcome you receive is 10 out of 10 from the hosts. Thank you guys for accommodating us on New Years Eve and New Years day. For the service, accommodation and location this was more than value for money. A big thank you. Michelle and David

Unique chance to spend a couple of days in a fascinating environment. We enjoyed it.

The Lady Maxwell room is a small part of a large project to restore and revitalise Buitlle Castle. The room itself is a throw back to yester year although with electricity, heating and a very comfy bed. Not luxurious but full of character. The breakfast in the library is a highlight although huge and sets you up for the day. The host Tobias is courtesy personified and we loved the farm yard animals and the puppy ‘radish’ All in all a great couple of days

Amazing little Gem

We stopped two nights for dinner, bed and breakfast. The breakfast was superb as another guest had commented earlier but the Dinner was outstanding, we were seating in an old vaulted hall all to ourselves, lit only by candle light, classical music gently played in the background. the food its self was as it should be, good produce from local suppliers or from their own garden, very well cooked and married with excellent wines. It felt like a special occasion thanks to the Gentlemen who own the property and look after you. I asked if there was any possibility of having a few logs. kindling etc for lighting the log burner in the room, when we returned they had been in and lit it for us, this was a another example of the great hospitality. The whole team are charming and charismatic, couldn't recommend it highly enough! Steve & Helen
