About this property

The Lighthouse - Luxurious Contemporary Home - Spectacular Sea & Mountain Views

Designed by multi-award winning Dualchas architects, the Lighthouse is a private and stylish home with perfect Highland views south over the sea to the Torridon mountains.
The contemporary design has been finished to an exceptional standard providing a place for relaxation and tranquil contemplation or active family holidays. The Lighthouse has recently been selected as a Finalist in the prestigious European Holiday Home Awards 2021 in the category 'Best Beach House'.
Set in a superb natural landscape, the house nonetheless provides every modern convenience, with excellent wifi, Miele appliances, underfloor heating and double glazing throughout. Furnishings have been sourced from the best British designers with Anta hand-woven fabrics, tables and lighting by Tom Raffield and Tala. The house is clad in larch and Douglas fir and has a striking zinc roof. Inside it responds to the fabric of the geography with a focus on the natural - stone, oak, linen, wool and leather accents.
On the ground floor the house has four well-appointed, comfortable bedrooms and two bathrooms, one en suite. There is a further large bathroom upstairs with a dramatic skylight over the bath. The beautiful oak staircase was handmade. The heart of the house is the spectacular first floor open-plan living room with a large down-filled sofa, cosy sheepskin beanbags and wood-burning stove. Huge windows overlook a south-facing balcony and large elevated dining deck, so guests can enjoy the breathtaking views whatever the weather. The smart Italian kitchen, which will satisfy the demands of the most discerning cook, leads directly off the dining area of the living room. A beautiful oak-panelled study with satellite tv provides a perfect evening retreat, in warmth and comfort.

The property is normally rented from a Friday to a Friday, with check out time by 10am and no check in before 5 pm. From the start of June through to the end of August and for the period covering Christmas and the New Year, we only offer rentals of a minimum of seven nights duration. For the rest of the year we are happy to accept shorter rentals (a minimum stay of four nights.) The house is unsuitable for very young children and babies as it has internal and external wooden staircases that end in stone floors and do not accommodate stairgates - we are therefore unable to accept bookings that include children under the age of 5.

Gairloch has been recognised as one of the loveliest places in Scotland for holidays since Queen Victoria's visit in 1877. The Lighthouse is set on the hillside overlooking the historic Gairloch pier with direct access onto the footpath leading to either the harbour, and its pub, restaurant and shop or after a short walk over the headland to one of the most attractive beaches in Wester Ross and the scenic golf course on the dunes. You really could park your car when you arrive and not need to drive again during your stay.
Whether you seek a holiday focussed on beach and sea or walks in a wild landscape there is something for everyone to enjoy. The Lighthouse is equally suited to family holidays, a retreat from the modern world or highland adventures. Activities available locally include; golf, sea and fly fishing, pony-trekking, walking, mountain biking, kayaking, whale watching, sailing and falconry. From the Lighthouse you can walk across to the Flowerdale estate and visit the arboretum or walk up to the dramatic Flowerdale waterfall, and a short drive away are the famous gardens of Inverewe. Above all there are any number of beaches, paths and mountains to explore in some of Europe's most unspoilt country. The house is equipped with guidebooks, maps and books on flora and fauna (as well as a selection of fiction and non-fiction). A powerful telescope on a tripod makes it easy to watch wildlife and birds on the sea and hills or stars at night from the comfort of the balcony. Guests are provided, on receipt of a booking, with a detailed handbook for the house and area so that restaurants and activities can be booked in advance.

Stunning view

If we weren't so keen to get out into the mountains we could have easily sat and looked at the view from the living room all day. A stunning location with direct access to the beach (10mins) and rocks for fishing. Plenty of munros within an hour by car and simply amazing climbing crags even closer (trad and bolted!). Communication with the owner and local cleaner was perfect and we were provided with a generous set of welcome items and the most comprehensive guide I've ever seen. Two shops within 5min drive provided everything we needed for a week and the Myrtle Bank Hotel provided an ample meal on our final evening.

Stunning

Wow. The Lighthouse is luxury. It is finished to an exceptionally high standard throughout the property and the views show off Scotland to its very best. We were a three generational family, visiting in October 2024, and all felt very much at home. Excellent pre-stay communication with the owner and Heidi, so the property can be prepared to your family requirements. There are not many other places where you can look out and see lots of wildlife including Deer, Eagles, Seals and the Northern Lights! Its a great base for exploring the surrounding area with some great walks, drives, restaurants and also the Badachro Distillery! We would definitely love to go back for another stay.

Everything had been thought about carefully by the owners to ensure that guests have a very comfortable and great experience. A magical destination run by people that care.

We have stayed in many beautiful high end rental properties over the last 30 years or so and get frustrated by lack of attention to detail, things missing, not working, unclean. The Lighthouse was perfect. From the initial enquiry to final farewell, the service was impeccable. Camilla (owner) and Heidi (housekeeper) communication was excellent and it is obvious both really care and want you to have the best possible experience. After a long drive, the approach roads into gairloch are probably some of the most stunning in the UK. (I motorbike around scotland most years and knew this area was stand out). As we drove up to the property, it took our breath away. Architect designed to maximise the views of the bay with an upside down configuration. Being in the construction industry, the attention to detail with the beautiful timber cladding and internal details were outstanding. Clearly the Architect was allowed to express himself fully on this project. The interior design is stunning, a true grand design, but still homely, welcoming and comfortable. From the top of the range kitchen appliances to the cooking utensils, Camilla has not compromised, only the best will do! People who travel to somewhere like gairloch will appreciate all these touches. We were visited by two stags and a deer on regular occasions, some stunning photos of them chewing on the lawn with the beautiful backdrop of the bay. We had a very busy week of outdoor activities, fishing, kayaking loch maree (highlight but be careful visiting islands as despite calm weather forecast wind and waves got up and we were nearly marooned! No safety boat, this is proper wilderness, fend for yourself!), mountain walking, boat trip, restaurants, golf. Beaches are stunning, weather was perfect. Without question the best holiday rental we have stayed in over 30+ years and some of the best family memories now locked away. We feel privileged to have been able to stay somewhere like this and cannot thank Camilla enough for sharing it with us. My partner often gets emotional leaving a holiday home she loves but me, never, well, their was the time I visited the Lighthouse in Gairloch….

Stunning !!!!

Having had a number of holidays fall victim to COVID already this year, we were so hopeful this stay would go ahead. Everything looked so perfect and our initial contacts with Camilla were very promising, thorough and reassuring, we travelled hoping everything would live up to our hopes. They did - and then some...... the COVID precautions were thorough but unobtrusive, allowing us to be stunned by the quality, style, cleanliness and welcome of The Lighthouse, Heidi had done a wonderful job, everything was immaculate and prepared just as we had asked. The fixtures and fittings were superb throughout, catering for our every need, including some we probably didn't know we had! The location and views were superb, both awe inspiring and relaxing, forever changing - aided by the variable Highland weather (it was September!!!) - and no midges !!!!! Camilla has truly thought of everything, with no corners cut and this made it all the more difficult to leave the house to explore - but do - it's more than worth it, with great beaches on the doorstep, beautiful walks including the local waterfalls - spectacular following recent rainfall, and excellent local amenities around the harbour. Following enjoyably busy days, The Lighthouse was the perfect place to retreat to, light the wood burner, sample the odd single malt and kick back to enjoy the night, accompanied by the abundant wildlife - including the deer, in the garden. We had one regret in staying at The Lighthouse, and that was that it wasn't for longer, we left refreshed and rested but with a slightly heavy heart, just how every great holiday should be. Thank you Camilla and Heidi, first class in every respect, Rob, Julie & Ben.

Gorgeous property with stunning views

The lighthouse really is delightful. It’s an incredible place with amazing views. The whole house is filled with top spec furniture, appliances, bathrooms etc - such a beautiful home that makes the stay very relaxing. The location is perfect too as you can walk to the beach, pier and local shop if you wanted. The scenery in Gairloch is just stunning. We look forward to returning sometime soon and staying in the lighthouse again.

Wonderful house with a stunning view

This is a beautiful house situated above Gairloch with a view of the entire loch and out beyond to the isles of Skye and Harris. The house is even better than the photographs suggest. It is extremely well equipped and very comfortable. When the variability of Scottish weather interrupts outdoor plans, then the house provides very comfortable diversions.

Magical

We were lucky enough to be the first guests to stay in the Lighthouse after lockdown restrictions were eased. Check-in was smooth and the owner and housekeeper very attentive (although not overbearingly so). It's a great house with easy access to the harbour (great for boat trips), beach (where we swam with a seal) and captivating views of the hills and mountains to the southwest. We also had deer and stags pay a visit to the garden on a number of occasions. Gairloch is a great base to explore the area - there's lots to see and do... but bring a wetsuit for the swimming!

Picturesque Highland Hideaway

Propery was very modern and well equipped with a good working kitchen great for indoor cooking. Not sure if it has a bbq for summer if it doesn't it would be a good addition although Scotland does not always get the best weather. The log burner in the lounge was cosy for winter days. Underfloor heating worked well especially in the bathrooms. Beds were very comfortable and the choice of bedding types was a nice extra. If I was to criticise anything it would be the lounge seating there was not enough of it for adults to all sit together and it was rather uncomfortable and a bit low if you are disabled or like our daughter 6 months pregnant. Seating in TV room was similar. The view from the lounge was spectacular just a pity it rained so much when we were there. Heidi was just the best and answered any queries we had promptly she is a treasure, in all the places we have rented we have not had a housekeeper quite like her. Gairloch is beautiful we had many lovely walks around the area. I am Scottish and visited the Gairloch lots of times when I was a child but did not appreciate how lovely it was. The shops and restaurants all close in the winter which is a shame, we have been to Iceland in the winter and they keep everything open for the tourists. I can't help but think that the highlands are missing out on some good income by closing as the restaurant that were open were very busy. I know you cant do much about any of that but I just thought I would mention it anyway. Would we return or recommend the property the answer is yes but maybe at another time of year. Thank you for allowing us to rent the Lighthouse. Regards Ann Hearn

You will not stay in a more comfortable well appointed home in Wester Ross.

Four friends came to stay in this beautiful area of North west Scotland and were fortunate to discover this recently completed 21st century home built overlooking the Loch and the mountains beyond. The Lighthouse exceeded expectations, delivering on all elements of comfortable modern living from large comfortable beds and modern power showered bathrooms to the best equipped kitchen you will ever have a chance to practice that speciality in. The living area is wide and long with comfortable seating to enjoy the views, a log burner for colder evenings, balconies running on two sides ,and has a room off for the boxed set or movie that you never had a chance to catch up on. Well installed wifi throughout the house allowed for any amount of remote working streaming or calling. A short walk down to the dock for provisions or across the road for a pint, we found there were plenty of reasons NOT to leave the house to explore this wonderful area!

Why they chose this property

After a lifetime of memorable and happy family holidays in Gairloch the chance arose to create a really lovely house on one of the best sites in Wester Ross. Skye-based Dualchas Architects have a stellar reputation for designing sleek contemporary homes in Highland settings. Their brief was to create a discreet home that sat comfortably in the landscape and made maximum use of the outstanding views. We think they have excelled themselves here.

What makes this property unique

Unparalleled views across the sea south to the Torridon mountains from the comfort of the living room or the first floor balcony and raised deck. The peace and quiet of a luxurious private home in a remote location, with easy access on a footpath to the pier, general store and the pub in one direction and the beach and the golf course in the other.
