About the township of Bicheno

Situated an equal distance from the capital city of Hobart in the South and the northern city of Launceston, Bicheno is a popular holiday destination for Tasmanian and interstate visitors alike. Bicheno provides a perfect base for exploring the unspoilt beauty of the East Coast of Tasmania. The Apsley Gorge National Park, breathtaking Freycinet Peninsula, quaint Coles Bay & Swansea townships are all a short drive from Bicheno. Penguin tours (bookings required) are held nightly all year round 5 minutes walk from The Retreat.

Diving and fishing charters operate out of Bicheno and glass bottom boat tours highlight the magnificent kelp forests that grace the East Coast of Tasmania.

One of the best view of Diamond Island

Our 2nd visit at Diamond Island Retreat. Very reasonable fee for a good location to see fairy penguins and wonderful view of Diamond Island. If you are early, you can catch the first sunrise. Will definitely come back again.

Lacked even the basics

The location is fantastic. However the house was lacking even the basic amenities. We were given 1 roll of loo paper, 1/4 roll of paper towels, no shampoo, no tissues, and the kitchen was falling apart (we almost pulled the drawer front off by opening it). It was clean but no care is put into this place. We found out the hard way that the local store closes at 5:30 PM after running out of loo paper and needing to shower with 2 small shell shaped soaps that were in the bathroom. I know it's not a B&B but there weren't even band aids in the place. In terms of tea and coffee there was 1 dried spoonful of Blend 42 and 2 old teabags. We rent places very often and expect the very basics to be there. We ended up spending so much of our own money on basics we may as well have gone camping. Again the location is fantastic, but I'd sooner rent another place nearby next time for the price.

Lovely clean house

Great little house. Well set up with everything needed in the kitchen. Was lovely to have a washing machine and drier. Enjoyed relaxing in the recliner chairs, listening to the waves crashing and watching the sheep. We walked from the house (through the sheep paddock) and explored the beach close to sunset - was absolutally magical!

Great View!

Great location, easy to find. The retreat is set out wonderfully for families. We had a great time walking to the beach (which involved passing some inquisitive sheep) every morning. Loved the closeness to Diamond Island, wade across in high tide or wait until low tide. Even saw some cute little penguins.

Brilliant Hideaway!

We had a marvellous three nights in this house just outside Bischeno. Plenty of room, fabulous location and lots of peace and quiet. The scenery is beautiful and rock-hopping around the perimeter of Diamond Island was not only challenging but great fun. All amenities are well laid on with thoughtful attention to the traveller's needs. Fantastic!!

Love this property!!

Felt like we were family, rather than guests! Everything we could have wished for, comfy beds included. Fantastic views, sheep paddocks down to the ocean, reminded me of Ireland. Saw fairy penguins (2) as we returned from a moonlit stroll along the beach. Loved this place, would book again. Value for money, super comfy!

A beautiful vacation home

We only stayed for the night but I could easily have stayed for longer. The view was amazing and it's just so much more comfortable than staying at a hotel. I've been to Bicheno many times and this is by far my favourite place to stay. It is only 1-2 mins further away than other accommodations but being right across from Diamond Island is totally worth it. We had dinner in town and drove back and had breakfast at the bakery. Go to that bakery. You won't regret it =).

Ideal - Perfect in every way

The location is quiet, the view spectacular, facilities are all you can ask for, full kitchen facilities, good sized fridge, washer, dryer and very comfortable beds with electric blankets, games for the kids if the weather gets bad, wished we had stayed longer. Next time. Great for a family of five.

Lovely place to stay

We had a lovely stay recently. Loved that there was space for our family of 5 to spread out. Well equipped with all that you will need. Lovely and clean. The best view that you will ever have to enjoy over a cuppa. A short stroll to the beach where my 4 year old played for hours. Thanks for making our holiday so much easier to relax and enjoy!

Exactly what we needed.

A very practical option for our situation. We were a family of five who enjoyed walking and being July, it was great to be able to get back in the evening to a warm and comfortable environment. All aspects were there for preparing our own meals and whilst it wasn't in the township it was a nice walk along the beach and foreshore into own where we could get what we wanted, especially fresh seafood from the wharf.
