About this property

Wooded Hilltop Retreat in Historic Saranac Lake

Off the beaten path, this quiet hilltop home overlooks the Adirondack Mountains and historic village of Saranac Lake. This charming retreat is decorated with knotty pine walls and large picture windows that provide terrific views of the woodlands surrounding the property. My place is thoroughly cleaned in between each visit. One of the most unique features of the home is the screened front porch. Here you can spend a lazy afternoon sipping tea, reading, or watching wildlife (deer, chipmunks, squirrels, and humming birds) from the comfort of two original antique Adirondack "Cure" chairs. On the main level, you'll find a spacious great room with new wall-to-wall carpeting and a George Jacques dining table and chairs. This area is the perfect setting for shared meals, games, and conversation with family and friends. There is also a sitting area with a wood-burning brick fireplace that will warm you after a day of skiing (wood provided). Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate by the fire or catch the latest shows on cable or streaming services on a new flat screen wall-mounted Smart TV in front of a new queen-sized sleeper sofa. The Master Bedroom features a king-sized bed, a large picture window with views of the village below, a second flat screen TV, and a new private tiled bathroom with tiled shower. There is also a complete bathroom with a full tub off the hall adjacent to the living area. As you descend the custom-made spiral staircase, you will find two additional bedrooms one with a queen bed and the other with twin beds and another ceramic-tiled bathroom. A full size washer and dryer are also on the lower level. The fully equipped kitchen has been recently remodeled with granite countertops, flooring, cabinets and appliances. I provide everything from linens to spices, condiments, coffee and tea, and wood for the fireplace. The kitchen is fully equipped with every pot and pan and small appliance. You can walk to town for your groceries or cross-country ski or snowmobile along the "railtrail". Easy access if you are a snowmobilier. Saranac Lake provides a central location for your Adirondack adventures. You are only a few miles from the Mt. Pisgah Ski and Tubing Center and Lake Placid. Enjoy skiing at Whiteface Mtn., boating, rock climbing, hiking, fishing, and golf. Close to airport, shops, restaurants, and lakeside beach. Lots of fun family activities in beautiful surroundings.

Wonderful Winter Weekend

The house was perfect for the six of us - two families with two 16 year old boys. Everything we needed, plus a real fire place. It snowed about 16 inches and the temperature dropped to 1 degree, so a roaring fire added to the fun. Despite so much snow, the streets were plowed and we had no trouble getting in and out. We would definitely stay there again!

Adirondack Long Weekend

We spent 3 nights at the Cook House. The house is on a quiet road, surrounded by nature. Walking distance to downtown Saranac Lake, a great bike path and a short drive to Lake Placid. Good restaurants in Saranac and a fully stocked kitchen for cooking in too. Comfortable beds and plenty of seating for the 5 of us! I would definitely go back!!

Glorious introduction to the Adirondacks!

This house is just charming with all the wood and rustic touches. With three bedrooms and three baths, there were more than enough rooms for us to be comfortable. The owner’s kitchen is very well stocked. We had everything we needed and more. And the house is walking distance to a grocery and drug store and a nice walk from the cute Saranac Lake downtown. We loved it!

Calm and quiet

There were just two of us, although the house can accommodate six people. We enjoyed a fire one night and could imagine hanging out in front of it more on a rainy day. Easy walk to town. The upstairs bedroom looks out into trees and felt like sleeping in a treehouse. We would certainly stay here again.

Cute cottage

House Cute cottage tucked away in Saranac Lake. It's actually a bit impressive how quiet the street it on is considering you're about two streets over from their downtown. Kitchen & Master Bedroom have definitely been updated to modern standards. I'm pretty sure the bathroom had some sort of full body blow dryer from the ceiling, who knew that was even a thing? (It's pretty cool). Kitchen is small but has everything you need. Living room is a bit cramped with the number of chairs around. If you're not staying with a larger group would just suggest moving them out of the way for the length of your stay. Otherwise, modern smart TV for your nights in. AC is provided on the top level in the living room and master bedroom by window units. The living room one worked fine and wasn't intrusive. The bedroom one could use with a better unit. Anything above roughly a ~4 on the dial and I couldn't sleep. Not a huge deal - just kept it low. The spiral staircase providing access downstairs has fairly small steps. If you're using the guest bedrooms down there just make sure to go slow. Area Right next to downtown sarnac lake which has whatever you need for the rental and a short shopping drag you can check out. Was traveling with a Dog and it was convenient to walk him. There's a park right down the road (it was being worked on during my stay unfortunately), a snowmobile trail, and plenty of sidewalks just crossing around town. Sarnac lake is also located as a good home base to Lake Placid where you'll find better food, a larger shopping drag, and some great days out. Staying outside of Lake Placid has the benefit of lowering the cost & avoiding the tourist traffic for lazy days.

good place to stay for winter

There was a slight problem with the wifi on the 1st day, but that was quickly fixed. Jim, the caretaker, was very helpful & kind in that regard. Overall, the house was well furnished & clean with good heating for winter.

Fabulous stay in Lake Saranac!

The property was fantastic! Everything it was billed to be - clean, cozy, beautiful! The only issue we had was that we didn't realize that it was up such a steep hill so the last two days of our stay, since it snowed, we couldn't get our car up to the property and therefore had to park it in a near by gas station and walk. This wasn't a big deal though and the gas station folks were very kind! We loved the property and would definitely stay there again!!!

Home away from home

What a great escape for my family. The kitchen was fully stocked with every kind of pot and pan and appliance you could need, including microwave, toaster and a super convenient hot water pitcher. Linens were clean with plenty of blankets for extra warmth. The couches and rocking chairs were super comfortable and there was lots of great visitor info in the packets. Internet was smooth and the bathrooms in great working order with good shower water pressure. My whole family hopes to return again soon!

Perfect Adirondack Retreat

This house was perfect for our family of 4! The 3 bedrooms were roomy and comfortable, and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook our meals. The picnic table was a favorite spot to enjoy the outdoors. We very much enjoyed our family time as we relaxed, hiked and played an epic amount of Uno!

Excellent value for comfy and cozy accommodations

My friends and I loved the place! So comfy and cozy. The beds were super comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, cutlery, pots, pans, serving plates and even food containers. We also loved how close it was to great restaurants and a grocery store...less than a 5 min. walk. We would totally consider staying here again for a little weekend get away!

Idyllic Interlude

Four of us guys went up to the Adirondacks for our annual hiking adventure. We couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. The property is ideally located in the High Peaks area of the Adirondacks. The house was clean, orderly, and well-equipped. We were very comfortable and within walking distance of a grocery store and downtown Saranac Lake. The wooded setting of the house is beautiful. We saw several deer from the property. If we ever go back to that area, this is where we'll stay!

Great family stay and central for many things to do.

Great little house that fit a family of 5 with no problems. With just a couple fans and cool nights, sleeping was comfortable. House came with everything we needed and lots of charm. It was easy to communicate with Anne, and she responded quickly to our questions and provided helpful information. Spent a few days boating and fishing on Saranac Lake, hiking up Mt Ampersand (long but very scenic from the top), and a quick drive to the Olympic areas of Lake Placid.

Great quiet location for walking to town

Anna was great in helping us check in and the property was cozy as expected. Fully functional house with all amenities. Drawbacks were no A/C but that is uncommon for the climate, downstairs towels with mildew which needed to be washed before we used them. Also there is a metal spiral staircase & king bed is a foam style. Neighbor's cat was very friendly!

About the host

Hosted by Anne Cook

Host profile image
The house was built by my family over 80 years ago and is updated yearly; I was born and grew up in the house with my sister and attended St. Bernard's school and the public high school before entering Potsdam University. After receiving my degree, I moved to Long Island where I married my college sweetheart and had a girl and boy. We moved to Westchester County, where I reside today when I am not in my home in Saranac Lake.

Why they chose this property

My property has it all: gorgeous views, every amenity, terrific neighbors, a large lawn, badminton, a gas grill, picnic table, beautiful gardens, and the ability to walk to town.

What makes this property unique

We provide everything from linens to spices, condiments, coffee and tea and wood for the fireplace. The kitchen is fully equipped with every pot and pan to small appliance. You can walk to town for your groceries or cross-country ski or snowmobile along the railroad tracks.
