Location:
Located just a few miles from the stunning Painted Hills, one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon, our home is spacious and open with modern amenities and relaxing outdoor spaces. We have completely updated the house with all new furniture and beautiful design touches making it the perfect place to stay when exploring Central & Eastern Oregon!

A short walk to Mitchell's Main Street with a brewery, three restaurants, general store, and a gas station, this house is centrally located and but feels very private when relaxing in the back yard.

Our House:
This house has two bedrooms with new queen size beds and memory foam mattresses along with an additional queen size sleeper sofa in the living room. Each bed has soft sheets, extra blankets if needed and plenty of pillows.

Our large kitchen has stainless steel appliances including a large refrigerator, dishwasher, new stove, microwave & toaster oven. It is well stocked with dishware and cookware along with cooking staples such as spices and oil making it easy to cook all your favorite meals. We also have a propane grill in our back yard, with propane included!

We have a Keurig single serve coffee maker with several complimentary pods to use and a coffee press if you bring ground coffee (We do not have a coffee grinder).

Our dining table is extendable for seating and we provide extra chairs for seating up to six people.

We have a fenced front yard, and a very large fenced back yard with a covered patio, seating for 6, and cornhole & croquet for entertainment.

We have free wifi, a dvd player with a selection of movies, a Roku streaming device that can be used with your Netflix, Prime or Hulu accounts and books and games. We do not provide cable or satellite tv.

We are also listed on Airbnb (with many more reviews) if that is easier for you to book!

Great home away from home

They had everything you’d need, plus much more! The kitchen and bathroom were completely stocked. Plenty of dishes, cookware, spices, condiments, coffee, tea and more!! They even provided a high chair which was perfect for our visiting grandchild! Look forward to staying again in the futureVery spacious with an open living concept.

Wonderful home

This house is the perfect place to stay if you want to see the Painted Hills. It was clean and comfortable, and the fenced yard was perfect for my two dogs! The caretakers were so friendly and helpful as well. We had everything we needed and would definitely stay again!

We had such a lovely stay! So easy to access the John Day monuments from here. The house was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. We would definitely stay here again.

Great central location!

If you’re planning a trip to the Painted Hills or John Day Fossil Beds, this is your place! Centrally located, it’s an easy drive to everywhere. The property is very nice, fenced in yard for dogs if you have them, and is quiet. Don’t forget to check out Tiger Town brewery, great food and drinks!

Perfect for John Day

Erin's house was great! We had two people so more space than we needed. The kitchen is fully stocked with any appliance you might want (although we did bring our own coffee grinder) and Erin was extremely helpful. The neighbors in this small town were so friendly and the house was in the perfect location to be our home base while we explored John Day.

Better than expected!

Our stay at this property exceeded our expectations in every way! The spacious house and fully fenced yard met all the needs of humans and dog alike. It felt as though we were staying in a friend’s home, not a rental. Plenty of high quality linens, a kitchen as well stocked as any we’ve ever stayed in, really comfortable furniture, and a lovely quiet neighbourhood. It was the perfect home base for exploring the area. Communication with the host was accurate and easy, which enabled us to relax and enjoy our stay. Bonus: if you don’t feel like cooking, Tiger Town (local brew pub) makes great food and beverages!

Great location, gorgeous surrounding

Quaint small town with plenty of friendly locals. The area was incredibly beautiful, though there was fire smoke that rolled in from wildfires during the evening of our last stay (out of control of anyone in VRBO or the owner). Located off a pretty quiet highway and nestled in a quiet neighborhood. The yard and property were spacious and very well maintained. The back yard is great for hanging out and socializing as its got plenty of seating and a view of the back hills.

Spacious living space , charming community helpful neighbors, very good emergency help, thanks to Glenn. The whole surrounding area is unique and stunning. My husband fell on a hike and once we got to Mitchell, Glenn helped us find the medical help we needed. Host Erin is very thorough and helpful. Wish we had stayed longer!

Perfect getaway for hiking

This place was extraordinarily clean and so cutely decorated. It was the perfect place to stay for our planned hiking in the John Day National Monument area - super close to the Painted Hills Unit. The owners were so very helpful with information about Mitchell the town and the area!! We were well prepared with bringing our own food for the majority of the trip. The Brewery had good food too! We loved sitting in the peaceful backyard in the evenings and appreciated the variety of movies to watch. Recommended location for John Day activities!

Comfortable option for touring John Day National Monument

We stayed for two nights during April to tour the John Day National Monument. This house is a spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable choice for this area. We appreciated the well appointed and spacious open concept kitchen-dining-living areas. The bedroom were also large with queen beds. The owner kindly sent a great detailed tour guide to us before our stay and was kind enough to check in during our stay to make certain we were comfortable and didn't need anything. The Central OR area exceeded my expectations for natural beauty.

Peace and quiet and beer, oh my.

Totally fine accommodations. Very close to town but just soooo quiet. Loved the backyard for bird watching. Would prefer an electric tea kettle over using one on the stovetop, but that is just me and my worry about being forgetful. We were able to hike Sutton Mountain, Black Canyon, Black Canyon Wilderness area, Lookout Mountain and the Painted Hills all from one location. Sweet.

great place to stay for John Day Fossil Beds

If your destination is the John Day National Monument, this is a great place to stay. It's just a short drive to the Painted Hills Unit. The Sheep Rock Unit is a longer but easy drive. The home was spotless. The kitchen was well-stocked and the appliances were all in working order. The neighborhood was very quiet. Mitchell is a very small town with minimal retail or restaurants. We brought our own groceries to meet dietary needs. The host is very easy to reach and very helpful. We could not have found a better place to stay,

Perfect Base Camp for Exploring John Day Fossil Beds Nat'l Monument and Wheeler County

Erin and John's property in Mitchell is a real gem. If you're looking for a nice family base camp located centrally between the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, this is the place. We spent five nights and were able to hike every official trail in JDFBNM. The photos on VRBO do it justice. The house is very spacious, comfortable and convenient for walking into town for groceries or a meal. The beds (mattresses) were very comfortable and we all slept well. Water pressure is great and there's plenty of hot water thanks to the tankless water heater. The lawns are nicely kept and made for fun family (BYO) badminton matches, cartwheels, etc. The neighborhood is quiet with very little traffic. The wi-fi was great for streaming videos and attending video-conferences. There's a great selection of books, DVDs, board games, cards and field guides. The kitchen has all of the modern amenities and is well stocked with utensils, etc. We were so happy to have stayed and were sad to leave. We'd love to return again someday.

After seeing countless photos of the Painted Hills and the John Day Fossil Beds, we decided to take our first trip to visit and found not only the Hills themselves to be more beautiful than expected, but we fell in love with the entire area and decided to buy a house here after only one visit. While we aren't able to live in Mitchell, Oregon full time, we visit as often as possible and are happy to be able to share our house with others to enjoy as much as we do!

We purchased our house because we loved the open layout and spacious yard and it immediately felt like a place we wanted to spend time. We carefully updated and decorated the house with a simple and modern design aesthetic that felt both welcoming and comfortable and had the house ready to go in late 2016.
