Special experience

We had a very special experience of the stay. Very convenience going to Cabot Trail and the national park. Friendly attitude and timely response. The natural environment was great with ocean, stars and the green views. However, please be mindful of the mosquitos and please adjust your expectations of the furniture/equipment considering the locations of the place.

If you are looking for a comfortable, bare-bones chalet off the beaten path, this place is for you

When my partner and I arrived at Cabot Shores after two days worth of 9+ hour car rides, we discovered that the tan chalet was not ready for our arrival. The tan chalet had been specifically reserved for us because I use a motorized wheelchair and had selected this location specifically for its accessibility. Rather than unpack and unwind upon our arrival, we instead spent two hours waiting for three staff members to hastily de-winterize our cabin. While we tried to stay awake in the Cabot Shores common area, we each ordered two beers and a salad. Although the salads were comped upon our check out, the beers were not (and gratuity was automatically added to the bill), nor was our first night's stay deducted. Given the fact that on our first night the chalet was not ready for occupation and on our final night we had no power or water, I was disappointed with the management's "hands off" approach to customer satisfaction or to making our stay more comfortable or enjoyable.

Wonderful Farmhouse

We were super-happy with the Farmhouse at Cabot Shores. A perfect space for two couple and kids (and a dog). We had more room than we needed and loved it. The fire pit and secluded property were great for exploring-we think might have found some ancient graves! The kids loved it. We got out in the canoes at the main house and chalet for an hour or so which was fun for the kids and grown ups despite the wind. Paul was the perfect host with a combination of offering suggestions and great advice. Our only disappointment was with the food we had in the dining room the one night we chose not to cook for ourselves. I would highly recommend a visit and look forward to our next trip!

The Perfect Getaway!

I work for an organization that will be holding a retreat at Cabot Shores in July and I went up with my husband last week to get a sense of the space and to meet the people who run the resort. We both had a wonderful experience. The property is beautiful and the accommodations are cozy, comfortable, and filled with character. I had the best sleep I've had in a long time! The food was delicious and the service was great. But what really stood out to us was the strong sense of community Paul and Barbara have created. There are volunteers and interns from all over the world helping with cooking, serving, farming, etc., and there appeared to be strong partnerships within the local community as well. Paul and Barbara were warm and welcoming and made us feel like we were part of a family. We even had a little mid-afternoon jam session with Paul and some of the other workers! My husband and I left feeling rejuvinated and inspired to make deeper connections within our own community back home. I can't wait to go back for our Retreat next month!

Comfort Vacationing

Great way to "slow it down" and get "in touch.". Beautiful setting and lots to chose from. Golf, hiking, kayaking, relaxing, exploring, socializing or getting away, massage, chalet or campsite. Paul and Barbara make you feel "at home" and you might even have a moose come and visit to see how you are doing! Food at the lodge was very good and there are many places within a relatively short distance to eat as well. Great way to also spend time with people from literally all over the world.

Nature embrace

I was very impressed with my experience at Cabot Shores. The best of Cape Breton surrounds the place. The natural setting is lovely with the view, the intertidal beach and old apple orchard providing a lovely sanctuary. The owners are warm and friendly giving the place at home feeling without compromising quality accommodations. For a retreat and a place to rest, you won't find better. I had a great stay and would go back again.

beautiful location,lovely cabins, gracious hosts.

Our family of 4 recently returned from a 5 day stay in the red cabin at cabot shores. The property and area are beautiful, lots of nature based activities on site and nearby. Paul and Barbara are perfect hosts who try to make sure everyone is having a good time and all questions are answered. Overall a very beautiful/fun spot with great hosts and reasonably priced. we certainly would recommend to anyone traveling in Nova Scotia.

Great place and wonderful hosts

We stayed only 2 nights at Cabot Shores, but it was wonderful! Paul & Barbara are really wonderful hosts!! Couldn't ask for better! And the cabin was super! Spacious, clean and comfortable! The grounds around the resort are also great, with many activities available! For sure would stay there again.

Cabot Shores

My 8 year old daughter and I visited Cabot Shores on a 10 day trip to Nova Scotia during the summer. We had stayed in several places by the time we got to Cabot Shores. A single adult traveling with a single child has special challenges - in particular, meeting the social needs of both of us. We found Cabot Shores to be a place that really worked for us. We hung out in the community room and talked with other travelers and hosts, Paul and Barbara Weinberg. One guest taught her to play chess, while I played Scrabble with his partner. We explored the area, especially focusing on wildlife - and were thrilled when we came upon a group of moose browsing by the side of the road along the Cabot Trail. We stayed in the lodge, which was easiest for us because one of us could go to the community room, even if the other wanted to sleep a little longer. I highly recommend this lodge for other parents and children. Great place, great people!

Cabot Shores on Cape Breton Island

I have visited Cape Breton twice - once last year ('07) and again this summer, and stayed at Cabot Shores both times. My stays were both short, not month or summer-long rentals, but I can say that they were both wonderful. The chalets are spacious and extremely comfortable and the setting is, in a word, beautiful- within walking distance of the water. Besides the place itself, Paul and Barbara, the rental's owners, are warm, hands-on hosts. On both trips, I ended up spending a lot of time in the lodge, a sort of community gathering/eating place and met perhaps the most diverse group of people I'd ever encountered in my life - a worldwide traveller from Ireland who was next off to Argentina, a completely kosher New York City couple who'd just married mid-life and were on their honeymooon, a group from Denmark who had come for a week of fly fishing, as well as an Indian guide named John, who is employed there, instructed me in how to make a tee-pee, and whom I now consider a friend. This is easily one of my favorite vacations and I will be going back again.

About the host

Hosted by Paul Weinberg

Host profile image
At Cabot Shores, your hosts are Dr. Paul and Barbara Weinberg, Cosmo the guide dog and friendly staff. Barbara is an accomplished acupuncturist, vegetarian chef and gardener. Dr. Paul is a former 'road warrior', teacher and psychologist, who considers his doctorate now to be in 'adventure travel'. Paul can be found jamming on the blues harmonica and trombone, hiking, yoloboarding or kayaking with Barbara and Cosmo.

Why they chose this property

We've traveled the world and found Cape Breton to be a unique, unspoiled and sacred place. We bought and renovated a farmhouse at Breton Cove in 2000, then saw the opportunity at Indian Brook to build a special resort and retreat center where people can easily discover and create their own adventure.
The natural beauty of Cape Breton, and the warmth and hospitality among its three main cultures (Mi'kmaq, Acadian and Scottish) drew us to create Cabot Shores, where great stories and memories are guaranteed.

What makes this property unique

Cabot Shores is not just a bed to sleep in, it is a chance to create your own adventure all in one location. With so many different and unique accommodations, you can experience something completely new each time you come - from a Mongolian Yurt to a chalet, from the cozy lodge to the tree house domes in our orchard! Rent a Kayak, canoe or yoloboard to explore the pond and Indian Brook, then visit our private beach and the ocean beyond by crossing on the Eagle Feather ferry. Have a picnic by the river or hike the waterfall trail. See moose cross the water while sitting in one of our cedar soaking tubs. Try meditation, Qi Gong or acupuncture. Ask us how we can help create the adventure you are looking for.
