About this property

Driftwood Cottage; cozy oceanfront, 2 Kayaks, Wood Stove, Porch, Sunsets.

Kayak or canoe across to historic Castine--30 minutes by water or 45 minutes by car--or explore the many inlets and islands of the Bagaduce River. Listen to the call of loons as you enjoy our ever-changing sunsets. A variety of games and puzzles and a collection of books will keep you occupied on a rainy day.

Brooksville, with a total area of 33.8 square miles and 53 miles of coastline is home to Holbrook Island Sanctuary, a pristine nature preserve, and also the Good Life Center, the last homestead of Helen and Scott Nearing (authors of Living the Good Life). Pastoral, rolling hills and scenic blueberry barrens are plentiful throughout the area. There is a Farmer's Market every Tuesday morning in Buck's Harbor during the summer months.

Acadia National Park, with a road to the top of the highest mountain on the on the eastern coast as well as hundreds of scenic hiking trails, is just over one hour away by car. Don't miss visiting the Wooden Boat School in nearby Brooklin; Haystack school of crafts on Deer Isle; and Kneisel Hall, famed for world-class chamber music, in nearby Blue Hill,

This fully renovated two-story camp on the edge of the water maintains its rustic atmosphere. New in 2015 is a small roof over the entryway (in case of rain). From there, you step into the "mudroom" where there is a coat closet and behind another door, a stacked washer/dryer.

Step through the glass french doors to the living room where you will find HARDWOOD OAK FLOORS, a BUILT-IN HEARTH, and a SOAPSTONE WOOD STOVE with a CATALYTIC COMBUSTOR--BURNS LIKE A FURNACE, BUT IS AS LOVELY AND GRACEFUL AS A WORK OF ART. The living room is furnished with a recliner and a full-size sofa as well as a smaller cushioned chair and a coffee table. A large sliding glass door in the living room opens to a fully-screened porch. Cushioned seats and coffee table grace the porch as well as a folding chaise/recliner.

The kitchen is fully supplied with dishes, pots and pans, mixing bowls, and includes a lobster pot, drip coffee pot, coffee bean grinder, tea kettle, toaster, blender, electric mixer, microwave oven. An efficiency-sized gas range allows for more countertop space.

Bathroom has large mirrors over the sink and lots generous-sized cabinets. There is a shower with adjustable shower head, and the linen cabinets are fully stocked with towels and washcloths.

As you walk up the stairs (with carpeted runners), you will come to a landing with large windows to the southeast and southwest. The upstairs has a cathedral ceiling with a ceiling fan and track lighting that can be dimmed for a tranquil ambiance. There is a large, high triangle window in the main upstairs facing southeast to let in plenty of early morning light.

Both upstairs bedrooms are cozy with Skylight windows in the lower part of gambrel roof, giving excellent water views.

The boat room has life jackets and paddles for the kayaks as well as a long, knotted rope to use to ease the kayaks up and down the slide (next to the stairway to the water). There is a gas grill with two gas tanks, and a backup charcoal grill. A portable wooden ramp is there to help move the grill in and out of the boat house. There's a wooden stairway that takes you down to the water and next to the stairway, a slide to make it easier to get the kayaks down and back up again.

Amazing stay

I cannot say enough good things about this rental, the property owner, or the location. The owner was very responsive to any needs we had. The location was PERFECT, not just for access to the water, but also for access to local restaurants and. Would happily stay here again in a heartbeat.

A perfect stay

The cottage is just as advertised, and in a wonderful location. The owners are also great, and communication and check-in were easy. We had some great meals at Buck's nearby, and Cry Babies in Stonington. We highly recommend, but only if you're looking for a great stay in a peaceful, beautiful location.

A Beautiful Place

Driftwood Cottage was the ideal lodging for our latest vacation trip to coastal Maine. A gorgeous, quiet location near Castine, Blue Hill, Deer Isle, and Acadia National Park and a charming, cozy accommodation for two. Our host Jane had fully prepared the cottage for our two-week stay and responded promptly to our few queries. It was a lovely place and time. We look forward to our next visit.

Magical

Driftwood is a wonderful place to stay. It is impeccably clean, peaceful, and spacious. We were there for almost a week, it was great to just hang out ; as well, we never ran out of interesting things to explore in the Blue Hill area and into nearby Deer Island.

Wonderful!

My wife and I stayed for 3 days this summer and enjoyed every part of the experience. The house is beautiful, with water views and peaceful trees surrounding the property. We took the kayaks out and stopped for dinner in Castine. Also loved dropping by Tinder Hearth just nearby - magical spot. Hope to come again!

A Special Place

I've been going to Driftwood Cottage every summer for the past 5yrs, and it never gets old. It's the perfect getaway in a great location. Jane is fantastic to deal with, I feel very comfortable interacting with her on whatever may be needed. The screened-in porch is one of my favorite places to be! Thank you, Jane, for keeping this place so special!

Celebration

The cottage was clean, airy and was well maintained. The location was perfect and day trips to preserves & trails were easy to get to. The host was easy to reach and very pleasant to deal with no matter the question. It was tranquil and so enjoyable that we are seriously considering visiting Driftwood again.

Short stay in Brooksville

This is an adorable little cottage off the beaten path. The kitchen was well appointed which was nice because I like to cook. The only down side was the bed in the larger bedroom. It is too small for two average sized adults and sags in the middle. Aside from the bed I would highly recommend this cottage.

Lovely and quiet

This cottage is beautiful. It has everything you could hope for in a peaceful getaway. It is spacious and tastefully decorated. The workmanship of all the renovations is top-notch. It is right on the water, with good water views from inside. The screened porch allows you to enjoy being outside no matter what antics any pesky insects have in mind! And the host is welcoming and thoughtful. We hope to come back.

Relaxation

The cottage is even nicer than in the listing photos. Loved the beautiful wood floors and wood interior, very nice condition and comfortable furniture. House is immaculate and well appointed with all supplies you might need. Spent a lot of time on the screened in porch with the nice breeze off the water, and walks down to the shorefront at low tide. Upstairs sitting area is so nice and bed very comfortable. Would love to stay again.

Rural Blue Hill peninsula

Cozy cabin. Well equipped. Nice screened porch overlooking water. I needed a fire several nights and there is a good wood stove and plenty of firewood and kindling. Tides are a challenge at any shore property on the peninsula and you need to watch the tide tables and plan accordingly. Close to Tinder Hearth bakery.

Idyllic, Spotless and Thoughtfully Equipped Cabin

Peaceful and beautiful location overlooking the Bagaduce tributary to Penobscot Bay. Jane’s thought of practically every detail and contingency and her conveniences are helpfully tucked nearby. We loved sitting in the screened porch at sunset and watching the (surprisingly substantial) tides go in and out. Heat wave at home while we’re sleeping cozy with the windows open! Enjoyed great hikes locally and, of course, an hour away in Acadia. Beautiful Maine!

A getaway

The house was perfect. It was a nice quiet spot and considering how secluded it was not that far from everything. The screened in porch was perfect. It was our morning coffee and evening relaxing spot. We were not brave enough to venture into the water. The rocks were a bit slippery but the view was beautiful. A definite go to when we go to Maine again. Thanks Jane.

Nice home away from home

This renovated house is very private, and very comfortable. Beds are great. Great porch. The host anticipated our arrival on a rainy damp day by turning on the wood stove so that we would be comfortable. House is 15-20 minutes away from a terrific bakery/pizza place and Walker pond. Only drawback--waters edge is rocky and being 81 and 75 we could not easily launch the kayaks.

Driftwood Cottage, Brooksville ME

Great location, no t.v., just peace and quiet. Lots of birds. The tide is extremely drastic, at least 100 feet from tide to tide. Acadia National Park is a good hour but the drive is scenic. In the summer be prepared for the crowds. Drive back is slow. Highly recommend Young’s Pound Lobster. Thank you Jane for opening up your lovely cottage. Maine is beautiful!

About the host

Hosted by Jane Reinoso

Host profile image
I was born and raised in Ohio, which means I can never be a real Mainer, but after 12 years of year-round living, Brooksville has grown ever deeper in my heart. I lived "out west" in Washington state for a few years after I became a physician assistant (PA). After doing a one-year emergency medicine residency at USC+LAC county general hospital (see the documentary Code Black for what THAT training was like in 1994), I wanted to live in a place with trees, water, hills, and four seasons, and Blue Hill Hospital just happened to be looking for a PA at the time. I got not only those things, but more than I had dreamed possible. After I moved into the double-wide mobile home on the property I bought, every day I would get up, look out my window across the field to the water and thank God for this place.

I later met my husband while on a medical mission to Ecuador, and he came to live here with me after we married. However, ten years of the long, cold, snowy winters (see owner photo, above) were just a bit too much for someone who grew up in the tropics. We moved south. For the past couple of summers, I have done seasonal work at MDI Hospital ER in Bar Harbor, which lets me come back and care for my property, though I can no longer live here, since you-all, my cottage guests, are coming in the summer, lol.

Why they chose this property

I was looking for a place to live within driving distance of Blue Hill Hospital (where I worked at the time), when I looked at this property with my real estate agent. I remember her telling me, "You don't want this property." After I had already fallen in love with the shoreline and the view and the large field. "Why don't I want it?" I asked. "It's a mobile home. No bank will give you a loan for this," she replied. Yes, there was a mobile home (which has now been removed), but there was also this small 'camp' right by the water which was in disrepair from many years of neglect. (I have always thought of a camp as a place to pitch my tent and build a fire, but I was quick to learn that in Maine a camp is a building, often in a remote area, where families go for vacation.)

The property was out of my price range at the time, so we kept on looking, but truly, after I saw that place, nothing else I looked at was good enough. I think it was about a month or so later that the owners came down on their asking price--to almost within reach. So I made an offer, there was a flurry of negotiations, and the rest is history. I never looked back.

Oh, and yes, the bank did give me the loan--turns out the president of the bank sang in choir with me at church--her response when I asked about a loan to buy property was, "Oh that means you're going to stay! We'll find a way to make this work." I love small towns!

Renovating this camp was a labor of love, as we did as much of the work ourselves, including shingling the outside, painting the old walls on the inside, completely re-building the boat house, and adding a wood shed. The more time I spent at the cottage, the more I knew that this was a small treasure that had to be shared with others.

What makes this property unique

The shoreline and the sunsets!! The peace and tranquility. The sounds of nature. Birds at the feeder by day and the silent dancing fireflies at night. You can see the stars, and the Milky Way. Once I saw a group of about a dozen seals at high tide coming all in the same direction, and they were followed by many gulls and a bald eagle--turns out the seals were "herding" schools of fish into the corner of the cove where they would be easier to catch. They did it about three times before the tide started to turn.

Then there's the soapstone woodstove with a catalytic combustor, and glass window in the front, so you can see the flames dancing in the air above the logs once the combustor has been engaged.

A boat house stores the paddles and life jackets for the kayaks as well as the gas grill and grilling supplies. There is also now a rope to ease the kayaks down the slide (next to the stairs) to get them down to the shore and back again.

We try to be as eco-friendly as possible; we use all LED and compact fluorescent light bulbs, we have a compost bin for compostable trash. There's a full-size ironing board and iron. Towels and extra linens can be found in the large bathroom closet. A variety of games and books are upstairs for a rainy day, and a phone for local calls. The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes, utensils, and towels, including cutting board, pots and pans, and a few select spices; there is a lobster pot and a list of the closest places to buy fresh, live lobster. When we redesigned the kitchen, I made sure that the sink was located with a large window in front of it facing the water. There is a large, double sliding-glass door which takes you out onto the screened porch, where you can sit and watch the sunsets and listen to the sounds of nature while sipping your favorite beverage.

Did I miss anything? If you find the cottage is lacking some little item that you like, just let me know; if it is possible, we will stock it.
