About this property

Eco friendly, Tropical paradise, spacious farm stay, conveniently located in Hilo

Experience a tropical oasis in a small family farm in a suburban part of Hilo. We are conveniently located being 10 mins away from Downtown Hilo. Experience life on a farm as you tour our permaculture food forest consisting of a variety of tropical fruit trees, medicinal plants, and our vegetable garden. As a family farm, we strive to be as self sufficient as we can by growing our own food and medicine organically while leveraging natural resources around us where possible.

You will be renting the entire upstairs 2 bedroom unit (over 1,200 square feet of living space) of our home with separate entrance complete with a kitchen, bathroom, a large screened in lanai (porch) and a front porch to watch the beautiful sunrise on a clear morning. Our kitchen comes fully equipped with a coffee maker, full cooking range with oven, pots and pans, pantry basics (cooking oil, salt and pepper) should you choose to prepare some meals during your stay.

Bathroom is stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash & a fresh set of towels. Beach towels will also be provided for your convenience.

Our space does not have a television intentionally so you can enjoy family time and the abundance of life on the farm. Connect conveniently to our high speed cable Wifi to stream movies, check emails and to stay connected during your stay here. We are blessed with trade wind weather for most of the year and AC is not common here in this part of the island. Fans are provided in both bedrooms as well as a ceiling fan in the screened porch. On a clear evening, enjoy stargazing like you’ve never experienced before. Experience a moonlit night away from any light pollution and see the major constellations without any help from telescopes !

During your stay on our property, feel free to take nature walks around our four acre property, lounge under one of our bamboo forest to enjoy nature, pet and feed our goats and enjoy a lower pace lifestyle living on our farm. We will be more than happy to provide you with a tour of our permaculture food forest during your stay.

We are a 100% smoke-free farm. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the property.

Guests will have access to the entire upstairs two bedroom unit complete with a living room, two bedroom, kitchen, screened in lanai and front porch.

This is an owner occupied property and the property owner pays all applicable taxes in the state of Hawaii. Owners live downstairs and are available to assist at check in and handle any of your needs during your stay.

Given that we are located in the tropics, please bring sunscreen and bug spray to make your stay here in Hawaii more pleasant.

Hawaii County adopted the mission to reduce our county’s ecological footprint in 2007, please bring recyclable shopping bags that can be used when shopping for souvenirs or groceries.

Since we live downstairs and work on the property, you will often times see us working outside on improvements to our farm. We have an outdoor kitchen where we prepare our meals, visible from the upstairs lanai and the master bedroom with the queen sized bed.

Too short a visit!

We truly appreciate and Malar and Sam! They are wonderful hosts! The VRBO is always neat and clean and ready for us! They also share fresh fruit from their gardens and leis as a welcome gift! Even though they live on the first floor you'd never know it as they do their thing and we do ours! The location is terrific for most places in and around Hilo area. We highly recommend staying with them and enjoying the area! We look forward to returning and staying with them! Aloha!

The property was great. Very clean and the kids loved exploring all of the different things to see on the property. The screened in lanai really takes the rental to the next level. Overall really good experience.

Eco Friendly Tropical Paradise

The owners/hosts were very hospitable & friendly. It was very clean and welcoming. We really enjoyed the screened in lanai for our morning coffee and afternoon drinks as well as the rest of the day. We had plenty of room with fans in every room for better air flow and enjoyed the peacefulness listening to the birds and other animals while only being 15 minutes from downtown Hilo. They continue to work hard on their organic farm and treated us to many fresh fruits! We hope to return.

Hilo Hospitality!

My family and I LOVED staying here! Malar and Sam were wonderful hosts--so thoughtful and courteous. The house and property were lovely, but what really made the difference was their sweet hospitality. We loved learning about their story as well--really inspirational. Thanks for making our stay great!

Lovely stay in the middle of nature and close to town and sea

We ahead a lovely stay at the farm. It's for nature lovers : you can hear lots of birds and animals and sea beautiful fruit trees. The hosts are welcoming like no other. We had a very interesting tour of their farm. Our children could also play in the garden with a swing, badminton. Only minor note : master bed could be upgraded (mattress way too soft). Overall a positive experience

Best family vacation spot in Hawaii!

This was our first family vacation as a family of 4. We knew we wanted to stay in Hilo to be close to volcano national park/beach etc and away from the tourist crowds in Kona. It was really important to me that my urban babies get a chance to explore nature. It was everything I hoped for and more! Malar and her family were incredibly welcoming, we had a lovely tour of their farm! My girls got to feed their baby goats (huge hit) eat fresh eggs/honey/fruit from the farm. The screened in lanai was our favorite spot and we made beautiful memories just eating breakfast there and counting the lizards we spotted in the trees. Home was clean, and welcoming, the perfect size for us. The kitchen is well stocked so we could cook at home. We will definitely be back, thank you so much for hosting us!

Hilo Hospitality and Living With Nature!

We enjoyed our stay at this small family farm at the edge of Hilo where the city meets the tropical forest and farm. Malar & Sam and their family are working well with nature to successfully demonstrate their commitment to sustainable agriculture and a tropical island lifestyle. The accommodations and the hospitality were first class with a very modern kitchen fully equipped with a deluxe kitchen range, dishwasher, and a hi tech refrigerator-freezer complete with icemaker capable of producing crushed ice or cubes. The house had two bedrooms (one queen and two twin beds) a front porch and an enclosed screened lanai in the back that puts you right in nature where you will be amazed at the singing of the coqui tree frogs and the birds. There is plenty of dining and sitting space for a family of four either in the kitchen or in the lanai. We were very comfortable here and enjoyed the educational tour provided by Malar of her family farming operation. We would definitely come back and stay again if we are able to get back to Hilo in the future. If you like living in harmony with nature, this is a great place to stay. We also learned a lot about tropical food production. Mahalo!

Beautiful and peaceful Hilo getaway

Our family of 5 really enjoyed our stay with Malar and Sam. The property is great for kids and we had fun on the farm tour meeting and feeding the animals. The location is on the edge of town and is very quiet (coquí frogs not withstanding :-) ) But is still just 15 minutes or less from downtown Hilo, the airport, fantastic beaches (check out Onekahakaha Beach Park), and popular attractions like Kaumana Caves and Rainbow Falls.

Wonderful experience!

We stayed the week while taking a course and were so pleased with how comfortable our stay was. All our needs were anticipated and more. Malar and Sam were very attentive, warm, friendly and courteous. Lots of space for 4 people on a beautiful, quiet unique permaculture inspired property. Easy access to everywhere we needed to go too. Cozy and spacious... well worth it!
