Love Sunsets? Glory in a natural, cozy, rustic setting
This cabin is a Family Treasure. Built as the original vacation cabin on Island Lane, road created by my Dad (retired professor from UVA) fifty years ago. Great Smith Mountain Lake location! Right on the main channel adjacent to lake marker R-8 where the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers meet.
Recently renovated 1st floor, kitchen & bathroom. Expansive lake view with exquisite sunsets are yours for the taking. Peek at the lake from every window direction, face the lake from the deck (like on a boat, and could step out into the water) and just a few steps below will take you to a private stationary dock, where boats can be parked. A few steps up off the upper deck will lead you to perfect views of the July 4th holiday fireworks from Saunders Parkway Marina. Brand new upgrade features a double mini-split ductless heat pump system provides clean, efficient AC, and heat. Please note: Vacation rental guests do bring their own Bed linens and Towels. If you wish to hire out for Linen services: wegotyoucovered-sml.com Approximately $99 540-875-7618 and doneritelinens.com Approximately $112 540-797-1838

Everything was great except the trash disposal. Finding a dumpster, Bedford County dump, was interesting with multiple trash bags in our car. I guess the summer includes trash service. Everything else was very good.
A few weeks late in reviewing this comfy and quaint cottage; a perfect refuge from the heat and noise of suburban living. The sunsets were spectacular, yes! as was the night skies that ensued. The cottage is nestled in a small sheltered cove providing privacy for swimming, my favorite exercise. Seeing Osprey and Herons was an unexpected gift. Everything I needed was provided by the host ,and she was quick to respond when I had a question or two about this and that. I can’t wait to return!
We very much enjoyed our time at this property. Although it was an older home, it had some more recent updates that made the stay nice such as the mini split wall units and some kitchen appliance upgrades. The area was so quiet, peaceful, and full of wildlife! We saw multiple deer daily on our morning walks down the road and around the property!
The heat this summer has been rough, and we used the ac units as well to cool the house down. The window unit filters had not been cleaned in a while and were clogged but we let Laura know and she was very attentive and helpful.
Be aware if you are bringing your own boat, there is very little room to get turned around with a large truck and trailer when arriving as the property is near the end of a private road and don’t have a lot of room to get turned around. You are better off driving straight to the marina which is at the end of the road and then driving the trailer back to the house or just park directly at the marina. Parking at the house is very tight and will require some special maneuvering once you are back to the house.
The wooden stairs down to the dock have seen better days and were very steep. A little concerning with smaller kids, but they did well after a few warnings. We did enjoy using some of the paddle boards that were at the property, those were a hit with the kids!
Overall it as a great weekend away, we very much enjoyed our stay!
The home is located on the lake in a cove which was nice. We like to walk several miles a day with our dog so the SML State Park was conveniently 3 miles away. The deck and outdoor dining area is large. The yard is a bit overgrown. We had good weather 2 of our 3 evenings there and watched the gorgeous sunset. Only the sit-in kayak will hold anyone over 150 lbs. Ants were a persistent problem on the kitchen counter area.
A nice quiet escape to the lake. Enjoyed taking our paddle boards out and swimming daily. Relatively close to stores and restaurants. Beware of the mosquitoes…they were brutal one evening and got like 20 bites in 10 minutes!
Absolutely gorgeous setting and views everywhere, incredible swimming right off the dock, and a rustic home, not fancy or modern but with everything you need.
This house has just about everything we need. We enjoyed the Netflix movies. However, it's a bit old with an old house odor. The previous guests didn't wash the dishes, which are in the dishwasher but dishes are dirty. And a screen window fell from the 2nd floor, which could be dangerous. The AC in the master bedroom is too noisy.
What a wonderful few days on SML! The cabin is quaint and tucked away in a quiet area which was perfect for us to celebrate our anniversary. Laura was wonderful to work with and quick to respond to any questions. Our well behaved lab enjoyed the dock and there was enough space in the second floor/street-side room for us to set up her crate. The view from the back deck was great and we saw many osprey flying nearby. We would definitely stay here again!
We absolutely loved your place! I wish I had done research on the area so my boys could have brought our boat! I was more focused on securing a place to stay for the graduation that was reasonably priced. Everything listed on the website was accurate and a perfect getaway for our graduate!
Laura was a delight during the check in process communication was quick and e. She was incredibly accommodating of our travel time.
The house was delightfully rustic, comfortably familiar and oh so peaceful. The views are the absolute best from the top bedroom to the deck to the dock… SPECTACULAR! Private doesn’t explain the tranquility we experienced. We truly enjoyed every moment. It was our first visit to Smith Mountain Lake. We plan on a return trip to Love Sunsets, Thanks again to our host Laura. 🌅❤️
I come to SML every year for a fall retreat, and this was by far the best place I've stayed! Beautiful, quiet, peaceful location - amazing lake views from the cabin. The cabin is cozy and charming. I enjoyed every second! Perfect spot for a rest from city-life!
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The deck and dock were our favorite hang outs! Sunsets delivered as promised! Definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a quiet relaxing getaway
Don’t forget bedding and towels, and drinking water.
Gray location! Don’t forget water, because the well water smells horrible. Lol
And we forgot bedding and towels.
Antique house on the water. But very clean!
Loved the location and von dock!
Thank you! Will stay again.
Our stay was more than expected! Loved the house and the view! We had everything we needed right in one place! Our kids loved the paddle boards and the deck access. The only con we experienced was that the deck need some attention. The boards on the side where we docked our boat are starting to coming off. It would also be nice if it was a covered deck. We didn’t mind it but compared to the other decks on the lake, it could use a little upgrade. We still had a great experience. We will for sure be back! LOVED the location. The trees make the property feel so private. This was our first time staying at Smith Mountain and we couldn’t have had a better vacation. Also, the plates in the cabinet are NOT microwave safe. I noticed some places on them and looked on the back and I’m glad I did. It really was a great rental though. The sunsets were amazing! Thanks for allowing us to spend the week.
The house is in such a wonderful location! We rented a boat and were able to pull in and out with ease. The neighborhood is beautiful, and neighbors are friendly. Even though it's a more "rustic" house it still had everything we need including a washer and dryer, which is a must for us. :)
We had a wonderful time this weekend! Beautiful views and cozy feel. Thank you!

I am a musician and educator, and this was my former home for 16 years, and I still love it. The lake cottage provided to me a lot of special solace to practice and develop my musicianship on piano, violin, mandolin. Plus, I love swimming!
Why they chose this property
My father spotted Smith Mountain Lake about 50 years ago and bought a large track of land. In fact, he put the road in, on this peninsula. Several family homes were built and some lots sold. This cottage property was constructed by my father and was my home for 16 years. To eliminate a daily commute to work, I moved to town nearby, and created a beautiful short-term lake rental to share with visiting guests on vacation.
What makes this property unique
Amazing, breathtaking views of the Lake, brightness and light, peacefulness, serenity and privacy (during the week), lake liveliness on the summer weekends! And, always, Glorious Sunsets.
