Calanque d’En-vau, Bouches-du-Rhône

On the 10-mile stretch of coast between the cities of Marseille and Cassis, in the southeast of France, there are a series of fjord-like inlets carved into limestone cliffs. These hidden coves are called calanques, and are some of the most stunning and secluded beaches in France.

One of the most beautiful of these is Calanque d’En-vau. The turquoise water laps against white sand, overlooked by mangled pine trees that cling precariously to the tower cliffs above. This gorgeous beach is only accessible by scrambling along a steep path down the limestone cliff. It is not ideal if you have small children, although there are boat tours from Cassis for those who don’t want to tackle Calanque d’En-vau on foot. Just note that boats can’t come right into the cove. You can also hire kayaks. There are no facilities on the beach so you must remember to pack a picnic and take plenty of water.

Calanque de Port-Pin, Bouches-du-Rhône

Another calanque in the Bouches-du-Rhone department, Calanque de Port-Pin is carved into limestone hillsides and is slightly easier to access than Calanque d’En-vau. The sandy beach is strewn with pebbles and is surrounded by white rocks and limestone hills covered in sparse vegetation and pine trees. Even the fairly unfit can make this easy hike and take a dip in the crystal clear water. You can reach Port-Pin in 30 minutes from the Cassis south-west car park, or a one hour walk from from the Gardiole pass. Access to the calanques of the Massif des Calanques region is restricted in summer due to the fire risk. During this period there are three fire risk levels: orange (access authorised), red (access authorised between 6am and 11am) and black (access banned).
