About this property

La Petite Grange - Converted vaulted barn - South Ardèche - 2 ensuite bedrooms

La Petite Grange is a welcoming two bedroomed converted barn ideal for two couples or a family. It has a large terrace and barbecue to fully enjoy the mild Spring and Summer nights and the wonderful colours of Autumn, shaded by an awning and a beautiful fig tree.
The ground floor is open plan with a custom built vaulted kitchen, stairs to upstairs and a further vaulted lounge/dining area. The downstairs bedroom is very large and has a double bed which converts into two single beds and an en-suite shower room. There is a door to a small gravelled garden with table and chairs. The upstairs bedroom is spacious and houses a double bed with a shower, wash basin and WC en-suite. There is a child gate at the top of the staircase. Both bedrooms have plenty of space for a baby's cot. La Petite Grange has 1 metre thick walls and so is very temperature neutral throughout the year.
We also let La Magnanerie (Property number 1074115) which is an adjoining gite with two bedrooms for 4 people, so if you wish to come as a group, both properties can be let at the same time, subject to availability.
In addition to the terrace, there is a shared grassy garden area with sun loungers, benches and a parasol.

A pleasant stay in a comfortable gite

Clean, comfortable and well equipped. The beds were comfy and there was plenty of hot water. Our first two evenings were cool and damp outside and the gite heating struggled. Once the sun arrived it was fine. Sitting on the terrace in sunshine was enjoyable. Sadly it is on a busy road and the noise is noticeable. There were some condiments left by previous occupants which seemed very old.

Stay at La petite grange

First time I have ever used Home away. And first time I have ever rented a house, and must say, I would definatly do it again. La petite Grange was absolutly superb, just inbetween Joyeuse and La blachere, great base for touring the area. Alan and Jane were fantastic, nothing was a problem for them. Would recommend to anyone. Thankyou

Fantastic location and facilities

Beautiful location and views to die for! First week too hot to do anything without sweating so the showers were really needed! Les Vans and Chassezac river one way Vallons and the Ardeche the other direction! We did lots of river swimming and canoed the Ardeche National Park - brilliant apart from nude rescuers!!! Will be back to this area again!

lovely place

La Petite Grange was just perfect for our needs (4 long term friends ). It's location was charming and so pleasant. The views were lovely. The bedrooms were very spacious and the en-suites v. adequate. The sitting area and kitchen again v. adequate - actually we sat outside a lot enjoying the views ! The owners - Jane and Alan - were very helpful but never intrusive. We thoroughly enjoyed their recommendation of a local restaurant in Joyeuse - went there a couple of times - great regional food and wine. The Ardeche is stunning - we will certainly be back again. A great place - a great holiday !!!

clean and tidy terraced property but too dark and noisily positioned due to its local road .

The property was clean on arrival but we were a bit disappointed by the lack of light going into the property. It is also furnished with a woolly sofa totally inappropriate with the local hot climate. The bin were also located very close to the outside dining area which made it impossible to enjoy dining "al fresco" after a few days. The holiday makers have a grassy area with sun loungers available for use , the only problem again was that the grass had not been cut. Finally a lack of people skills was felt during our stay from the lady owner of the property. We go to France in my home country every year and the Ardeche is a wonderful destination but we shall not return to La Petite Grange.

Nice, but not perfect

Spring in Ardeche

The weather was pretty cold during our holiday week in Ardeche. But it was my only complaint. House is situated very comfortably between two villages. Everything you need you can have within couple of minutes to drive nearby. Also in good position whether you want to drive south towards Nimes or Avignon or move upwards to Lyon not to mention that nearby is very beautiful nature fully packed with mountains and rivers. But special compliments goes to the owners!!! Alan and Jane were absolutely amazing and they deserve the full credit. No matter what the clock was 7 in the morning or 10 in the evening I always got my answers. With very warm regards from Estonia!

Formidable séjour

This was our second visit and this time we came with friends and the new ground floor bedroom with cosy en-suite made this possible and worked very well as we were separate and private. It even has its own private outdoor area so we were never on top of each other. The Barn was very clean and well furnished, with a small kitchen, great for making meals, breakfast etc. With a very sunny terrace immediately outside with a retractable sun canopy for alfresco eating. Alan and Jane were very welcoming and helpful going the extra mile literally when we could not get tickets to visit the Chavet Caves by organising the tickets for us. Will be back as this is a lovely part of the world with lots to see and do and not too busy.

Excellent property!

The barn had been converted beautifully to a very high standard. Clean and well maintained and owners very helpful. Would definitely recommend the property to others. Very good restaurants and activities nearby - especially around the Ardeche Gorge.

Perfect homely property in a stunning location

My partner, baby and I stayed at le petite grange in May for a friends wedding. The gite itself was absolutely perfect for us, it had everything we needed and was well laid out with a really homely feel to it. It was quiet and peaceful and had a very relaxing atmosphere. Our baby who was a crawling 11M old at the time stayed in the travel cot provided on request and the property was a safe, clean environment for him to explore. The seating area outside the property was a sun trap which was lovely for eating any time of day and also had a sun canopy. The views while eating outside were beautiful! The location was easy to find and the routes we took went through beautiful landscapes. The nearby villages of la Blachere and Joyeuse were a short 15 minute walk with plenty to offer. There are also many beautiful places to visit within the Ardeche and we hope to return and explore more in the future. The owners, who live on site were very welcoming and helpful and have set out the two properties in such a way they are not imposing on each other. The driveway and gardens were well created and cared for and helped create this beautiful site perfect for anyone to spend time in this scenic location. I would go back in a flash and highly recommend this gite!

Still our favourite holiday rental in the South of France!

We have stayed at the lovely Gites Marston several times over the past few years and we always have a fantastic time. La Petite Grange makes the perfect home away from home for a relaxing holiday and its location, being walking distance from both Joyeuse and Lablachere, makes it the perfect property from which to explore the area, whilst also being able to make the most of the countryside with a lovely big terrace, a beautiful sunny garden and a view over the vineyards, which is to die for. The house itself is cosy, homely and finished stylishly to a high standard, with a beautiful kitchen that's fully equipped with everything you need. The barn renovation is gorgeous, with stunning original features such as the vaulted stone ceiling downstairs, which is so quintessentially South France, paired with modern amenities such as new bathrooms, flat screen TV and fast internet. Since our last visit, the property has actually been extended to include a second bedroom, which is absolutely stunning and comes complete with its own bathroom and a lovely secluded terrace on the side of the building; it's now the perfect property for two couples or a family. We stayed as two couples and a baby and it was the perfect layout; with one bedroom upstairs and the other downstairs, both rooms felt secluded and private. The owners, Jane and Alan, are wonderful! They went out of their way to ensure that we had everything required for our stay, and as always, provided huge amounts of information about the area. They're the perfect hosts as they're available if you need them, but really appreciate the value of leaving you in peace and giving you the privacy to enjoy your stay. All in all, another amazing stay at Gites Marston!

Beautiful barn conversion - ideal for two

La Petite Grange has been beautifully converted and is ideally situated to explore both the Ardeche gorge and the Cevennes without being in the middle of tourist-ville. The owners are friendly and helpful and have equipped the property with everything required for a great stay. Our only regret is having only booked a week in an area that has so much to offer... We will be back! Would recommend an early morning start to experience the Ardeche gorge in almost solitude even in the peak of the summer holiday. Aven d'Orgnac is also well worth a visit. La Blachere is a lovely village within walking distance of the property and has an amazing Sunday market.

Perfect cottage for exploring the Ardeche!

People always make a stay, so when we booked with Jane and Alan it soon became clear that we had chosen well. Fast and efficient responses before we arrived and on-hand when needed when we were there - but never intrusive. Perfectly presented and spacious cottage in a prime location which was absolutely perfect for our 1 week stay. Good car-parking (always a bonus for someone who is unhealthily obsessive about where he parks his car!) and nice patio area to enjoy some of the lovely local wines on a warm summers evening. It was nicely located between the two villages and you can easily take a leisurely stroll into either for a meal / drink in the evening. The clean and comfortable cottage represented great value for money and the garden was a nice area to soak up some the beautiful, warm French sunshine. We will definitely be back, but probably in early Spring or late Autumn to experience the region in a different season. Thank you Jane and Alan for making our stay so lovely :)

Beautiful barn

We had a great stay in la petite grange. The building was lovely and full of character with incredible views across the valley. It was also really well equipped with everything we wanted. The owners were friendly and helpful and gave us plenty of advice on walks, places to see and local knowledge for restaurants and amenities. The town of Joyeuse was beautiful and had a great selection of restaurants which were all within walking distance so we could enjoy plenty of the local wines. The area itself was amazing. There were so many activities to do locally. We were particularly interested in the climbing and the kayaking both of which were some of the best we have experienced. All in all a great stay and we’re already planning our next trip!

Comfortable & well appointed

A well appointed gite with ample living space & large double bedroom with ensuite shower room. Barbecue terrace with long views over the local countryside to the hills. Friendly and helpful owners on site. Situated between Lablachere & Joyeuse, both a short walk away. We enjoyed the market in Joyeuse & the wine tasting at Cave de Lablachere. Plenty of local walks or take short car rides to the local sights - see the well stocked information pack. We enjoyed a very comfortable seven night stay in this gite with several trips out including the not to be missed caves at Grande Site de l’Aven d’Organac & the Ardeche gorge, which even we canoed down though complete novices, a wonderful way to see the gorge.

A lovely place to stay

We have just returned from France having spent a week in La Petite Grange. The gite was a great place to stay, and we would certainly recommend it to others for a number of reasons. The property itself is in a good location, within an easy drive of the major tourist attractions, but far enough away so that the area does not feel too 'touristy'. The gite is well furnished and equipped and provided everything we needed. It was also very clean and well maintained. Outside is a lovely terrace and we spent most of our evenings sitting outside enjoying the evening sun. We certainly enjoyed our visit and hope to return at some later date.

Lovely gite in excellent location

La Petite Grange is a lovely, well maintained and clean property in a beautiful location with easy access to local facilities and attractions. Joyeous, which is situated only a few minutes drive away has very good shopping and restuarant facilities but is also within reasonable walking distance as is Lablachere in the oposite direction. The area is one of the most beautiful we have visited, not only in France but generally throughout the world, with some stunning scenery and many picturesque and interesting villages within easy reach. Local markets are held around the area on a daily basis. La Petite Grange has all the equipment and facilities which could be reasonably required for a pleasant and comfortable self catering holiday and the owners, Alan and Jane, who live on site were most helpful and accomodating. Because we live in a small quiet rural village in England we had a slight concern over the immediately adjacent road but a fairly recently built bypass accomodates the vast majority of through trafic and we didn't have any problems. We travelled to this location on Eurostar direct from London to Avignon where we picked up a hire car (booked through Eurostar) and drove to Lablachere. This is a new service which we found most convenient and mostly trouble free. We would certainly recommend La Petite Grange to friends or relatives and we hope to return some time in the not too distant future. David, Elva & Jude. Note: We attempted to place this review on more than one occasion shortly after our return but the normal 'homeaway' website wouldn't respond.

Charming and relaxing

La Petite Grange is part of a beautiful old building. It was clean, well laid out and well furnished. The owners were extremely helpful and provided lots of information on the area. The standard of finish was high, particularly the kitchen which was extremely pleasant and well equipped. We made good use of the British Freesat TV channels and the free wi-fi. We stayed in January but it was sunny every day. Not much is open attraction-wise as this is the quietest time of the year but we came for relaxation and we certainly got it. The cottage is only a couple of minutes either way to the two closest towns where you can buy everything you need. We were very pleased with the cottage and would recommend it.

A stunning place to visit!

We have just returned from a lovely, relaxing stay in Lablachere. The accommodation at La Petit Grange was homely and comfortable. It was very clean and provided everything we needed for our holiday. The information pack suggested lots of places to visit and activities to do and we also really appreciated the local knowledge of the owner in finding our way around and finding places we may otherwise have missed out on. The scenery is breathtaking and a drive along the Ardeche Gorge is well worth doing. We only wish we had booked the kayak trip to fully appreciate the views. There are many little medieval towns which are beautiful and have fabulous coffee shops and gift shops. Lablachere and Joyeues are within walking distance of the accommodation and we would highly recommend a visit to Maison de Nany in Joyesus old town for an evening meal. A stunning place to visit and we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing on the terrace with a bottle (or two) of the local merlot. Thank you to Alan & Jane for their kind hospitality.

Beautiful spot!

My girlfriend and I had a great holiday here! It really is a beautiful spot and there's so much to do in the area whether you're into adventure sports or just enjoy wandering around sleepy French towns and taking in the scenery. The gite was perfect for our needs, beautifully done out to a high standard and full with everything you'll need. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine in the evening and enjoying the atmosphere. Jane and Alan, the proprietors, are very friendly and full of information on what's going on in the surrounding area. We would definitely book again.

About the host

Host profile image
Until 2009, my husband Alan was an architect in Cumbria. We had already bought La Petite Grange as a potential holiday home and had started to do it up, but that was too much of a long term project so Alan decided to take the plunge and get his hands dirty so moved to France with a view to setting up our gite business. His first job was to completely renovate La Petite Grange (whilst living in with all the mess) and then to do the same with the adjoining property, La Magnanerie. He has since built us a home n site, renovated a barn and it's coach house and built a new house on the other side of the village.

Why they chose this property

When we first saw the property, we fell in love with it and its views across the vineyard, the valley then the hills and forests, together with the stunning view of the Tanargue mountains beyond.

What makes this property unique

La Petite Grange has a lovely atmosphere with the vaulting and the really thick walls which makes it a haven when the summer sun gets too hot (which can be the case in July and August). The terrace has wonderful views and the shade of the fig tree which we had initially cut down to ground level but which had no intention of giving up and is now considerably bigger than when we started.
