About this property

Well-equipped House At Foot of Medieval Cité with Garage, Wifi & 2 Shower rooms

From the entrance lobby at the main door two stairs lead down to the newly-refurbished shower room/WC. Upstairs the first floor has two double bedrooms (one with an additional single bed) and an additional shower/WC. Also on the first floor, the kitchen/diner/lounge includes two large settees, a breakfast bar with four high stools (please bear this in mind if you have younger children), oven and hob, microwave, and a dishwasher. There is a wood-burning stove in the lounge for the winter months and electric panel radiators are throughout the other living areas and staircase. The washing machine is in the utility room in the cellar and the private garage can also be accessed via the cellar. The opening to the garage is 174cm tall and 222cm wide - this is large enough for most cars such as Vauxhall Meriva, Mazda 6, Peugeot 308, Ford Focus, but not for particularly tall cars like SUVs. The garage is 560cm long, so long enough for most cars. There is free parking available in the street and in other very nearby streets.

Free wi-fi, (high definition) Satellite TV, and Playstation 3 with a selection of games and Blu ray movies.

Carcassonne, in South West France, is easily accessible via its own airport with Ryanair flights to London Stansted, Glasgow Prestwick, Liverpool, East Midlands and Bournemouth airport in the UK, Porto in Spain, Dublin and Cork in Ireland, Brussels in Belgium, and Billund in Denmark. Toulouse, Perpignan and Beziers Airports are all a little over an hour away by car with flights to many other European locations.

Carcassonne is one of the most popular tourist attractions in France, with its dramatic medieval Cité (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997). Walk along the castle ramparts to get fantastic views of Carcassonne and the surrounding countryside, or visit the Castle itself or the historic Cathedral, dating back to the 11th Century. Numerous excellent restaurants and independent high quality shops are within the walls of the medieval Cité, which are a few minutes walk from the house. Two Michelin-starred restaurants are within 400 metres of the house, one of which is in the Cité itself, the other (two-starred) a few minutes walk along the road.

For those with a car, historic local villages such as Villemoustaussou and Pennautier are within 15 minutes drive. Slightly further away (about 40 minutes) is Narbonne, and a little over an hour away are Toulouse, Beziers, and Perpignan. Alternatively why not take a train to some of these larger cities, or to the seaside resort of Sete, with its long beachfront.

Lovely house

We really enjoyed our stay at this house it is very well equipped and very close to la Cité. Perfectly located for visiting and strolls by the river Aude. (Plenty of games and good WiFi kept teenagers happy when indoors)

Good Location but Disappointing Accommodation

We liked the location but the property was very disappointing. The key holder met us at the property and communication was difficult as her English was very limited. To start she had difficulty opening the door, so much so that we only used the garage door, the smell as you entered was very damp and musty. We didn’t use downstairs shower room as the shower enclosure was very ‘mouldy’. The wooden duckboards looked very uninviting. The kitchen was well-equipped. The oven was not clean and the wooden breakfast bar was tacky. The bed linen and pillows look old and the fitted sheet bobbly. The mattresses were about 2 ins deep. The upstairs bathroom was in a poor decorative state but it did function. The garage was a bonus. We enjoyed Carcassonne and made the best of our holiday but, in all honesty, could not recommend this property. I was surprised that Vrbo were displaying it on their site.

CarcaSUN!

Absolutely wonderful location, within very quick walking distance of La Cite. Owner communication was great, on site support was wonderful. Facilities were good. Lots of nice touches, like providing adapters for sockets! Kitchen facilities were of a very high standard. Don't forget to play Carcassonne!

Very convenient and comfortable

Property was clean and spacious - the garage was a great benefit. Very well positioned just outside the citadel walls, close to the porte d'Aude, with a good épicerie a handy short walk away. 15 minutes to the main town (which had a great market) and a further 5 minutes to the Canal du Midi. Lots of vineyards are in close proximity (by car), with loads of great cycle routes from the house.

Great facilities in a wonderful location

The property is accurately described as presented in the HomeAway details. I find it difficult to judge size from photos and was pleasantly surprised. In my opinion, it is spacious, well equipped and fantastically well placed for easy access to the medieval Cite and the 'newer' 13th century Carcassonne town. The owners have provided a very well thought-out and useful house book that answers most of a visitor's questions and I found the caretaker Chantel to be very pleasant and very helpful. Over all I found the house to be light and airy, even the basement where there's loads of space to hang washing that dries well ~ (it had to be done, even on holiday) ~ note the suggestion in the house book re leaving the window open. The kitchen/living area is a good size and 2 adults can easily move around the cooking area. The kitchen has everything one needs to self cater (beware the hidy drawer with the corkscrew) with a 4 ring hob, full sized cooker and dishwasher. There's a good sized fridge freezer in the kitchen and a spare fridge in the basement. All in all there's plenty of cutlery, crockery, glasses and pots and pans for 4 people and that, I find, makes life easier overall. The living space has plenty of space for 4 with 2 sofas that I found very comfortable and a TV. There's also a great selection of games for PS3 and the wherewithall to play them. My own delight was finding the Kate Mosse Languedoc trilogy books in the kitchen. I really enjoyed reading Citadel in the very place the action is set. A couple of very rainy holiday days, a comfy sofa ~ a great diversion. The downstairs bathroom does have a low ceiling, (as noted in some of the reviews I read) but as we're not a tall family it suited us well. The property has the added benefit of a lovely clean garage. We hired a Renault Captur and it was a good fit, it took away all the worry of finding somewhere to park, and leaving the hire car out in the street and possibly out of sight too. There is so much to see in and around Carcassonne it was a real pleasure having a lovely place to stay while we enjoyed it.

A delightful property in a great location

The owners of this property have clearly thought carefully about what to provide their guests. Having previously stayed in static caravans, it was a joy to be somewhere so well-equipped and comfortable. We all enjoyed our stay very much. The children were particularly thrilled by the numerous lizards who inhabit the outer walls of the house on warm nights! Having free wi-fi was an added bonus. The location was perfect for visiting the mediaeval city and near to all the necessary shops and amenities. Above all, the information pack provided by Anna and Ian was brilliant, covering everything we possibly needed to know.

Perfectly positioned for a visit to Carcassonne

We spent a week in and around Carcassonne. The house is in a perfect position for walking up to the old town or over the bridge to the city centre, an area we had not visited before. The house is well equipped with everything we needed although, with so many eating places around, we didn't cook at all. But there are lots of little extras included if you do want to cook. One suggestion, if you are arriving by car. The road outside is very busy and parking, although free, is hard to get. The garage is great but we only just squeezed our hire car in so a smallish car is recommended.

Four night stay

Stunning location. Able to walk up steps to La Cité. Comfortable and clean. Immediate response when reporting pipe leak. Fixed same day. Our Berlingo would not fit into garage - we knew beforehand. Parking tricky. U.K. Tv disappeared after first day. Blessing in disguise?

It does exactly what it says on the tin!

Often properties are misrepresented on these sites but, not in this case. This pretty little house IS at the foot of the medieval city and there is direct access only moments away that, depending on your fitness, will have you in that magical place in five minutes or so. The property is large with two generous bedrooms a large and comfortable seating area and all the comforts you could ask for in a holiday location. The centre of the modern Carcassone is also a short walk so this really is a central location. Yet, it is a peaceful spot and quiet at night. There's a grocery and a newsagent a few doors away and I came to feel like a local going down in the morning to collect a baguette and paper and practice my French. Be warned, though, you won't find many people who speak English but, when you make an effort to speak French, they are gracious, friendly and helpful. Go if you like a quiet holiday, history, architecture and an excellent climate. Stay in this house if you want a home-from-home. Thank you Anna and Ian!

A wonderful property!

This house is a hidden gem at the the foot of the old city walls. The house was well equipped and more with everything that we required for our stay. We were very appreciative of the welcome gift too, such a great touch. Pierre and Chantel were extremely helpful and on hand if needed. If like us, you like to explore and discover, there is so much to do by car and on foot within the city. The old city is a must visit and would recommend a guided tour as you can get a passport which allows you to get discounted tickets to several things, including the jousting tournament in the castle, the castle itself and St Hilaire (the home of the first sparkling wine) all of which we would highly recommend. If like us you wanted to know more of the local history of the Cathars, then go to Foix at the foot of the Pyrenees and not for the faint hearted, a hike up to Chateau de Lastours. The views from both were amazing. We have fallen on love with this area and merely scratched the surface. We will be back and would highly recommend staying at this property, I know we would like to again.

fantastic location

a wonderful introduction to Carcassonne. our meeting with Chantal went well and we loved trying our limited French on her. The apartment had everything we needed and after a hard day sightseeing it was lovely to arrive 'home' , have a hot shower and relax in the living area with a glass or two of local wine. every time we arrived back we kept being amazed at the view up the small street to the cite. our extra days meant we fitted in a trip to Toulouse and Carcassonne plage. The local shopkeepers were friendly and helpful and our favourite restaurant was the tavern moderne at the end of the rue de la gaffe. a wonderful house in which to enjoy the cite and the countryside.

Ideal location

We had a very comfortable stay in this house. It is perfectly situated for walking around the city and the bastide. If you have a car it is a tremendous bonus that this house has a garage! A tumble dryer is the only thing missing but you can dry clothes on the clothes airer and heated towel rails! The owners are very helpful and thoughtful. Carcassonne and the surrounding area is a great holiday destination with plenty to do and see for all age groups. We highly recommend this house!

Great Location!

We spent 4 nights here with another couple and really enjoyed our stay. Ian and Anna were great to work with and responded very quickly to any questions we had. The house was completely equipped with everything you need and was very comfortable. You sure can't beat the location, you literally walk out the door and you can see the beautiful walled city above. A very easy walk to wonderful restaurants and the town and Ian told us some of their favorite restaurants and they were wonderful. We highly recommend this rental. Thank you Ian and Anna!

Nice and well-located house

House was well-equipped and very clean, as described. Ten-minute walk from the medieval city and from the modern city centre. Plenty to do in area and you're never short of a restaurant or café - would definitely recommend the house. In addition to the obvious (the medieval walled city), why not take the train to Narbonne or Toulouse, or hire a car and drive out into the Minervois region or south to the Pyrenees?

Great location, well equipped tidy property.

Clean and well presented base for exploring the surrounding area. Benefits from a garage which it great as parking could be a problem. Lots of thought put in to leaving everything you may need for a active holiday, bikes, golf clubs, cool bag and ice blocks for days out and a kitchen with herbs and essentials so you don't have to buy them if you eat in! We had a great time, thank you.

Excellent base in Carcassonne

This is a great house. It is very well provisioned, and the instruction book in English was so helpful. Chantal showed up very quickly to give us keys and orient us once we had arrived and phoned her. Having two bathrooms was a nice luxury for our family of four. And the location is superb: you can be up in the Cité on foot in five minutes. Having two bicycles was a real treat as well, and we felt our car was quite safe in the garage.

Great spot - just below La Cite !!

Holiday home was totally suitable for 3 adults with 2 bedrooms and 2/showers and toilets. Loved the proximity to the La Cite just above the house, and the parking garage so very good, plus suitability to explore the region with ease. Owners were very prompt with replies and instructions very clear, felt very supported, and security deposit was returned promptly after our departure. The meet and greet service worked well with a local. We would certainly recommend and enjoyed our stay in Carcassonne immensely.

A wonderful apartment with great location!

The apartment is located just below Cité de Carcassonne and you can climb up the cité through two footpaths beginning from Rue Longue to Pore d'Aude, one of the two major gates. We enjoyed walking around the cité every morning and sometimes at night. A secured garage on the ground floor is a great merit for this apartment. The door is automatic and its inside is large enough for a compact car. Living, dining and kitchen are all spacious and functional. There are two bedrooms next to each other and two separate shower rooms are on the ground and first floors; they are all comfortable. Although the guardians can only speak French, check-in was easy and smooth, because the owners, Ian & Anna, have provided us with detailed booklet of the apartment (and Carcassonne) shortly after the booking. There are no supermarket around the apartment and you need to walk to the downtown or drive to E. Leclerc 4km away for a big shopping. For those who love cooking, a superb kitchen is a bonus. You don't need to bring anything including seasonings for your stay. The owners are kind enough to give us a welcome wine. We enjoyed our 5-night stay very much and it was far pleasant than expected in this old lovely city!
