Solar Piedade - 12.500 sq m2 property with pool and tennis court near Porto

This property is in the center of a small city, and is a Villa with 12.500 m2.; Some buildings in the property are dated from 1740. The Villa used to be a farm with 100.000 m2. In the end of the past century, the property size was reduced, allowing us to take a better care of the beautiful gardens, the swimming pool and tennis court areas, and the decoration. A car trip from the villa to the downtown area of Porto takes 12 minutes (17 km), and the Atlantic coast and sandy beaches are 20 minutes (22 km) from the villa. The villa is totally modern and renovated and we take a lot of pride in the decoration and materials made available to our guests. The five rooms are devided in two separated houses. The 'Swimming Pool House', has two en-suite rooms on the 1st. floor, with views of the swimming pool area and it's garden, and the 'Cottage House', just five meters across, with three rooms, two on the 1st. floor and one on the ground floor. This house has one full bathroom on the 1st. floor and another, very spacious and modern full bathroom on the ground floor. We consider our rental ideal for groups of more than one family, but it is also very interesting for a single couple that want's a beatiful experience of staying in a large property.
There is free wi-fi in all rooms and inside areas, as well as outside, in the gardens. The parking is free and there is a lot of spaces available for that, and also a closed garage just for the guests vars. Children's cod's and high chairs are also available without any extra-charge.
There are two supermarkets at close, walking distance (Intermarché and Minipreço), as well as bakeries, restaurants and take aways barbecue, pizza hut delivery, ATM machines and banks... You will never feel isolated in this villa, but you will find a place where you and your family or friends have all the space you need to relax, be confortable and at ease, with lots of things to do... We think that from the first minutes of arriving until saying goodbye, our guests feel that Our Lady of Mercy Villa / Solar Piedade, is a perfect holiday home for groups and families. All the positive and pleasant reviews make us feel that our place is good and even very special to the people that have graced us with their visit, and words like 'oasis', 'paradise', 'wonderful', keep being mentioned, keeping us motivated to live up to the expectations. We are devoted to make our guests stays more pleasant than in the past, and keep investing and treasuring their comments and advises.

A great holiday with family and friends

Nice property and host. Very responsive and friendly. We are a group 11 of three families and everybody loved the holiday. Supermarkets and nice restaurant can be reached by walking. Plenty activities to keep kids busy. You do need to have your own transport for accessing Porto. Thanks for hosting us.

Didn’t want to leave!!!!

What an amazing property. 8 of us arrived (13-54) for a week and just didn’t want to leave. Everything about this place was perfect and we’re all so relaxed after our time there. The pool table, the tennis court, basket ball, swimming pool. There was plenty for everyone to do. We used Uber a couple of times to go into Porto but literally couldn’t wait to get back to the villa. The local town has good amenities and we did go off and explore and find some lovely walks among vineyards and some old cobbled streets. Cannot wait to go back

One of the most spectacular and self contained buildings and grounds that we have ever stayed in. Happy Holiday

It was a beautiful property and very well looked after, with everything we needed. Pool was spotless. Very easy to get to airport, beach and into Porto. Not the most scenic immediate area but in the villa you are totally secluded and there are two big supermarkets within walking distance so shopping easy. Owner delightful, as was his dog!

We have just had an amazing holiday staying at Solar Peidade. From start to finish the hosts were amazing. Helder and his family were so helpful and kind. The villa was perfect for our family with a beautiful pool and lovely accommodation. We attended a family wedding during our stay and Helder organised our transport which was perfect. Supermarkets in walking distance, we couldn't have asked for more. We were all very sad to leave and hope to return one day. Thanks again to Helder and your parents. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lovely villa in quiet district near Porto

Rooms all tidy & most of them spacious.Well covered by units for either heating or air conditioning.Comfortable beds. Pool not heated, but clean.Lovely gardens with plenty chairs / loungers available.Pool table,table tennis table indoors. Kitchen area had plenty cutlery,dishes & plates & also enough space.Very pleasant lounge area opening out to pool & lawn.Very helpful owner Helder available at all times & also had his father in law & his wife nearby if we needed help with anything.

Great, long weekend 😀

Lovely spacious venue, great facilities with basketball court, pool table, tennis and of course a pool. we had bbq most nights, as the shops were really close with plenty of choice. Pretty quiet town, but Porto was only 20 mins in taxi. Would def recommend this venue and Helder and family were very welcoming and helpful if we needed them, but left us alone all weekend.

Splendid villa, a lovely relaxing holiday

I was very happy with updates about readiness of villa. Helder was there to meet us, no waiting about. He was helpful re places to eat and offered further information should we have needed it. The villa is very well equipped, plenty of towels for use in bathrooms and pool. Plenty of tennis racquets and balls, lovely well maintained tennis court. Pool very clean as was the whole villa and environs. The villa was a home from home, good equipment, lots of cutlery and crockery. We had a very relaxing stay at the villa, felt very safe and cared for.

Nice and spacious, a great experience

Wonderful!

We recently stayed in this beautiful villa for a week whilst a couple people in our party competed in nearby Maia. It was fantastic! Clean, beautifully furnished, the owners are the friendliest people and always around to help and we had the best time. For three days we never left the villa! Table tennis, pool, tennis, badminton, basketball, football and ofcourse the swimming pool kept us all thoroughly entertained. There were 10 in our party and we never felt on top of one another, the villa is plenty big enough to accommodate that number and more. Two local supermarkets and plenty of restaurants are within easy walking distance and should you wish to go further taxis are very reasonable and the public transport is very reliable. We had a great time and plan to go back in the future!

Idyllic Retreat

We have just returned from a very relaxing holiday at Our Lady of Mercy Villa in Alfena. This delightful property was ideal our party, 5 middle aged couples, although another bathroom would have made it perfect. Set in a suburb of Porto, it is relatively easy to get to the city, we used VIPBUS, organised by Hélder, for all our transportation. Miguel and Monica were brilliant, they could not have been more friendly or accommodating. We used them for trips into the city, a Douro boat trip - highly recommended, Guimares and Alveiro, all worth a visit. On our 'days off', we lounge around the pool and even had a few sets of tennis! The property was very private and the perfect place to unwind. There are 2 supermarkets within walking distance, although the area does not have anywhere of interest to walk around. We ate a couple of times at the nearest local regional restaurant, Restaurante Quinta Do Cabo, which was good quality and excellent value for money. There are lots of good eating establishments in Porto, but if it's fish you are after, get along to nearby Matosinhos. Finally a word about Hélder and his parents who were always friendly and helpful. All in all, a brilliant holiday

Wondeful property with high level of comfort

We spent a wonderful week with an extended family group of 13 in this ancient and calm property with swimming pool, tennis court and pool table. The property offers some superb pieces of architecture from the eighteenth century. The rooms offer a high level of comfort. The bath rooms are impeccable and modern. The living quarter in the main house is spacious and offers a pool table, TV and nice furniture as well as a well equipped kitchen. A high-speed Wi-Fi connection is available. The swimming pool has the right size. Bakery, supermarket, coffee bar etc. and an excellent restaurant are in walking distance. Gas station, ATMs are at short distance. By car it takes prox. 15 min. to Porto center. There is also a direct bus connection to Porto center. The welcome was extremely cordial. We can highly recommend this place.

This house was beautiful and with an excellent range of facilities. It was on the edge of a small town but the surroundings were very peaceful. It was only 2 or 3 minutes' drive from the motorway and there were several supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants within a few minutes' walk. The owner responded promptly to all our e-mails and everything was exactly as described. We were looked after very well by his patients who were very friendly and welcoming. The garden to the rear of the house was a lovely place in which to spend sunny afternoons, the large pool with diving board was clean and well maintained and there was also a good range of sun loungers and inflatable toys for the children. There was also a tennis court which was good fun to use in the evenings. The interior of the house was well furnished and clean and there was also air conditioning available in the bedrooms. The pool table was well-used by us and the living area was enormous. Although the kitchen area was slightly small we found that it was adequate for making breakfast, sandwiches and simple meals. There was an induction hob, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, microwave oven, coffee maker and a small BabyBelling type oven. As long as you weren't planning on hosting a dinner-party for eight people it was fine. There was an excellent restaurant & takeaway approximately 10 minutes' walk from the house (Senhor Churrasco) and we ended up having takeaway meals from there on most nights. Overall this house is highly recommended.

Truly Enjoyable

This was my second homestay over and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Right from Helder and his parents who welcomed us like we were long lost friends to the actual property, it was a lovely experience. The house is gorgeous and has ample space, it's well ventilated, and very well maintained. It's like your own paradise in the middle of a very charming town. The pictures and descriptions don't really do it justice, you've got to stay there to believe it. For people who drive, the location is quite convenient. There are multiple cafes and supermarkets around that are very accessible by car, and to a certain extent, on foot! Considering we don't drive, it was very thoughtful of Helder's father Sebastian to drive us to and pick us up from the station, and take us to the airport when we we were leaving. They were very warm and made us feel extremely comfortable. If we go back to Porto, we'd not think twice about staying here again. I would definitely recommend Helder's place to anyone visiting Porto. It made the trip all the more enjoyable. I don't think we'd have loved the city as much had we stayed anywhere else.

Helder's House

Shame on us! We had doubts at first- despite the warm friendly contact from Helder and the detailed information pack and website. It all seemed too good to be true. But it was true and we needn't have worried. The very first reaction on catching a glimpse through the imposing gates was "OMG!" For the price of a basic apartment you get a luxury villa. Set in lush, well tended gardens, you immediately pack away the world and its cares, and settle down into an oasis of tranquility. There are lots of lovely nooks and crannies to read a book in- or just to sit and stare. Undoubtedly, the centre-piece for us was the pool. Situated (no joke) just beyond the villa's front doors. You almost can roll out of the house straight into the pool. Inside the house, the furniture is special and personal and chosen so as to provide comfort but yet be unobtrusive. My favourite is the golden antique telephone in the master bedroom. There are several pieces like that- but you'd have to work hard to harass one of these "Objets d'art". It's as if the owners have anticipated your path beforehand. You don't have to constantly watch the kids as you do in some more formal places. Your every need seems anticipated. Think beach towels- there's a whole bag full. Crockery- enough for a busload of guests. "Lilos" for the pool. Televisions in every room (as if you'll be watching much TV- though it was great to catch a bit of the US Open). For extra entertainment, there's a billiards table inside and full-sized tennis court outdoors. Helder's lovely parents are across the beautiful courtyard- available if you need them which adds extra security. It's tempting to stay confined to such luxurious, relaxing surroundings. By all means book 2 weeks- as we did and do venture out after a while. Discover Alfena, the local neighbourhood. The people are friendly- in a real sincere genuine way. The local cafes- we drank loads of "cafes-con-leite"! The Supajo bakery!- best to go in at the week-end like the locals for breakfast. The meat counter at the local mini-preco supermarket!- (think poolside barbecue). The local restaurants- authentic, traditional, welcoming! In 2 weeks we lazed around so much- we didn't do enough of the touristy things to do in Porto. We managed the Old Town, Bom Jesus in Braga, and FC Porto, but kept rushing back "home" to relax. Our 4 year old summed up the experience well. "I'd like to live in this holiday". We suspect you will too.

Valonga Holiday Chateau/Country House

Ssshhh!!! The villa is a little bit of heaven that we would like to keep secret but would also like to share with all our friends. I dont think that there are enough superlatives to describe our stay but I'll give it a try. I cannot speak highly enough of Helder and his parents - they are wonderful. We corresponded with Helder beforehand and this immediately gave us the feeling that the week ahead would be something special. From the moment Helder met us at the airport to our first drive through the gates to the Chateau we knew that we had found the perfect getaway. We were greeted like long lost relatives and the owners warmth and friendly personalities helped set the scene on what has proven to be one of the most relaxing weeks of our lives. We arrived to a table of sweet and savoury treats which was a welcoming sight to a family of weary travellers and this helped create the perfect atmosphere of sheer decadence and relaxation. The owners showed us around the property and the looks on our three kids faces, aging from 7 to 17, so not easy to please all at the same time, told me that the owners errand of love in restoring and decorating the property had been more than worthwhile. The photographs on this site and the description of the property is wholly accurate although the wow factor when you arrive needs to be experienced first hand. The sense of history surrounding the property cannot be under-estimated and the family are only too willing to share with you just how their project has evolved. The downstairs area is comfortable and easy to access. The snooker table forms a focal centre-piece and the glass dining table provides a comfortable and sumptuous eating area. The kitchen itself is well stocked with crockery, cutlery and glasses. However, most of our dining took place at the large table on the patio by the swimming pool. There were plenty of chairs and sun loungers which added to the relaxing atmosphere in that there was no need to "bagsy" the best areas. It was the little touches outside like the rose bush, the old fashioned lamps and the stone table which helped add to the magic of the chateau and I'm sure you'll find your own little magic touches too. The upstairs area is gorgeous and beautifully finished but I cannot end my piece without paying special thanks to Helder and his parents. They have created a little paradise which I have no hesitation in recommending and we are already looking forward to next year

Ideaal verblijf voor vrienden- of familieweek(end). Kamers zijn netjes schoon en contact met de eigenaar verloopt goed. Je hebt wel een auto nodig om je te verplaatsen of anders met de Uber is het ook prima te doen. Van de tennisbaan konden we helaas geen gebruik maken, deze was toe aan onderhoud.

Loved our stay in Alfena

We loved the villa the second we drove through the gates. Sebastian was so gracious with trying to communicate with us, hence Google translator helping. The entire compound, the swimming pool, bedrooms were great. We just wished we had more time to spend at the villa to enjoy it more. It's a small neighborhood but places you can walk to for groceries/restaurants. I would highly recommend this villa for your stay.

Great place to spend a week with friends or family

This property is a green oasis. The old stone buildings are beautifully decorated. Spacious rooms and bathrooms, with comfortable beds. Well equipped kitchen. The pool is great and the movable roof is absolutely brilliant. The town does not have much to offer, but supermarkets are within walking distance, and the property is located perfectly for airport, train and drives in the area. Both the hosts and the couple living at the property are very welcoming and helpfull. If you are offered a tasting expirience - say yes! The homecooked food is amazing and totally worth a try :) Overall a very nice place to spend a week - even when weather is against you.

Earlier in my life I traveled a lot for recreation and for work, but now I'm saving up to travel with the children in a few years time :-) I love my family and live a quiet and simple life in one of the best and most beautiful countries in the word, and one of the richest ones also, if you measure the wealth by the quality and sympathy of the people.

Why they chose this property

My father bought this property, when Alfena was almost just a small village with farm land. A visionary, people call him now, he knew this place could be special so he rebuilt it and laid down the foundations to the amazing place it is today.

What makes this property unique

We can honestly claim that Our Lady of Mercy Villa is a very unique, special and beautiful place that stays in the mind of visitors long after their passage. It is so, not only by the sheer size of the walled property spreading across 12.600 m2, but by many factors. The architecture and materials used in is construction - where granite pieces of art can be found in the monumental entrance portal, in the chapel building, and in the main house exterior stairway, just to name some.
The main garden found just after crossing the main gate, where palm and fruit trees coincide, among many kinds of flowers and plants. Just after entering the property, even before finding the entertainment areas as the pool or the tennis court, or the rooms, the visitors cross this area and start to feel the special atmosphere.
Stopped in the large parking area facing the tall private chapel building, some are still uncertain of what such a majestic and tall building represents… Seeing the granite engraved inscription of MDCCXL, they find that the building is here since the 1st part of the 18th century.
Crossing the second green gate and entering the patio, guests are delighted to find that this area lives up to the expectations. Different kinds of fruit trees (orange and lemon trees) charged with their fruits are found here, together with other kinds of flowers. In the background you can already hear the canaries and other small birds singing inside the green aviary. Then it is time to cross another green gate and find the perfect scenario for the family entertainment. Another large garden, this time set in a pristine lawn, builds up for the large swimming pool, with immaculate “blue” water. The movie scenario will not disappear for as long as you stay here, you will only feel more and more like a part of it. Life if made of choices, choosing to stay in Our Lady of Mercy Villa is one of those that you will keep up there, on the top of the “right choices list”! Come and see for yourself.
