A farmhouse in Tuscany for holidays and retreats
La Rocchina is a mountain farmhouse in Tuscany, Italy, 10 km from the medieval city of Pistoia, which is half way between Florence and Lucca and was named Cultural Capital of Italy 2017. This idyllic, secluded house was recently restored and is a perfect hide-away for holidays, gatherings and retreats. La Rocchina sleeps 6-7 people in three bedrooms and is available from April-November.
La Rocchina is one of three houses in a chestnut forest above the small hill town of Baggio. Getting there requires a 7-10 minute walk up a stone mule path from the end of the paved road (where you can park) or a 20 minute walk from the village bus stop. Guests should be reasonably fit and comfortable walking on uneven ground. Luggage and groceries are transported by 4WD on arrival and departure day.
The house is self-catering and has the following amenities:
Master bedroom (upstairs, sleeps 2 in double bed)
Twin bed room (upstairs, sleeps 2 in single beds)
Bedroom/large living room with wood-burning stove (downstairs, sleeps 2 in single beds)
Stairway landing alcove (upstairs, sleeps 1 in single bed)
Small sitting room with wood burning stove (downstairs)
Well-equipped kitchen with gas cooker and wood-burning stove (downstairs)
Dining room (downstairs)
Full bathroom (downstairs) and WC (upstairs)

We are Jethro and Olivia (mid-60s). Jethro is a social scientist and university teacher now working freelance, and Olivia is a writer and former secondary school English teacher, now teaching English to Italians. We are US/UK citizens and have been coming to Murotto for 50+ years, over three generations. We now live here year-round, in Olivia's family house, and offer nearby La Rocchina for retreats and holidays.
Why they chose this property
La Rocchina is remote and serene, with no noise of traffic or urban life. It is ideal for relaxing, walking, creative work, retreats, as well as being a good base for sight-seeing in Tuscany. There is a 10 min walk up a stone mule path from the end of the paved road, where you can park your car. The house can also be reached by 4×4 jeep, which we use to transport your luggage on arrival and departure.
La Rocchina has free WiFi, electricity, hot water, a gas cooking stove, two wood-burning stoves and a washing machine, all included. Wood for fires can be provided at cost. No TV or landline, but good mobile phone reception.
The hamlet was abandoned during WWII and the houses, fields and orchards have been gradually restored by our family since the mid-1960s. Murotto is off-road (except by 4wd) so there is a 10-min walk up a stone mule path to the houses.
We are creating an organic and permaculture homestead, and restoring the buildings and landscape for a sustainable future.

What makes this property unique
La Rocchina is in a peaceful hamlet of just 3 farmhouses in a chestnut forest above the small village of Baggio (600m) in northern Tuscany. We are on the edge of a vast mountain wilderness in the Apennines, with many walking trains and abundant wildlife. Yet just 10km away is Pistoia, a beautiful medieval city half way between Florence and Lucca. This makes La Rocchina a good base for both enjoying nature in an idyllic slightly "off-road" location, and sightseeing with all that Tuscany has to offer. Florence is an hour away, as is Lucca, while Pisa, Sienna, San Gimignano and Tuscany's finest beaches are within 1.5 - 2 hours away.
