About this property

Country house with garden and swimming pool

La Guiltiere is the perfect place for a really relaxing holiday. Give a carrot to the horses, throw some corn to the chickens, leave the kids playing with the rabbits while you enjoy a bit of quiet contemplation under the Gazebo. la Guiltiere is the perfect place to 'get away from it all'.

Four bedrooms, (three double, one twin) with central heating and if you want to be really cosy the dining room has an open fireplace. Three bathrooms and downstairs toilet/cloakroom, TV, and internet.

The kitchen is easy to use and well equipped. Open plan to the dining room, a great space to wine and dine with family and friends.

The first floor has two double bedrooms each with own bath/shower and dressing rooms.

The second floor has two bedrooms and shared bathroom and although each bedroom has high ceilings, watch out for the low doors and mind your head.

The house has a huge and very lovely beautiful garden. (The garden to the front of the house has gates just in case you want to contain small children)

La Guiltière is a fabulous four bedroom 'Maison de Maître' deep in the heart of the Normandy countryside. Although recently redecorated and modernised, we have tried as far as possible, to retain its original and traditional style.

The kitchen is well organised and equipped with electric range cooker with 5 gas burner hob, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, and all you would expect in a proper usable kitchen. Cutlery and crockery is of a good standard but not irreplaceable should accidents happen.

The dining room, with open fire, is connected to the kitchen by a large opening giving the impression of being open plan. This is a great space and even for the larger party means that the poor old cook isn't left slogging over a hot stove alone.

The hallway has a fabulous oak staircase leading to the upper floors.

The sitting room also has an open fire TV, DVD, internet, comfy sofas and original hand stencilled walls!

Downstairs loo and cloakroom. Back kitchen for washing wellies, washing machine and tumble drier.

Outside terrace with barbecue table and chairs.

The first floor has two double bedrooms each with its own sitting room/dressing room. Bedroom one has a bathroom, bedroom two has a big shower.

The second floor has one twin bedroom and one double bedroom. There is a shared bathroom with great views over the countryside.

La Guiltiere - Christmas 2019

La Guiltiere is a delightful old house in the middle of wonderful countryside with incredible views from every window, no matter the weather, and during our stay we were lucky enough to enjoy winter sunshine and sharp frosts, a Winter Wonderland! The house is full of charm and is like stepping back in time. It made the perfect Christmas house to bring our extended family all together under one roof, cooking together in the modern kitchen and relaxing by the log fire. The owners are close by at all times and are incredibly welcoming and on hand to answer any questions. Highly recommended to anyone looking for complete tranquility and old-world charm.

Perfect summer house

A family with twin 4 year olds and a six year old, we stayed for a week in mid August. It was stunning. Easily my favourite holiday house ever. Huge gardens, loads of space both outside and inside. Spotlessly clean and well-equipped. Toys, puzzles, games books and DVDs galore. Our daughter loved the rabbits and collecting chicken eggs. Beautiful gardens with amazing flowers, great veg and a gypsy caravan for the kids to play in. Plenty of space for ball games too. Our hosts were wonderful. My husband forgot his camera and Jen posted it to our next location the next day. They were great with the kids and put up with barrages of questions about everything. Beautiful, peaceful, characterful. Loved it. Loved it loved it.

My favourite holiday house ever: Perfection

Best holiday house ever. We loved this house. We are a family with twin boys aged 4 and a 6 year old girl and we loved it. So much space inside and out, the kitchen was well-equipped, the house was spotless and stunning. There were DVDs, jigsaws, games, books, dressing up clothes (for the kids - mostly girls stuff - our boys looked great in fairy dresses). The gardens were huge with lots of passages and secret places to hide away. We used the bbq almost every night, there was a hammock, garden games, chickens, a donkey, rabbits, a dog ... We had to make a real effort to get out to see the sights. And even when we did, we raced home again. Our hosts were wonderful and didn't (seem to) mind the screaming and screeching of our vocal boys and at night, it was SO peaceful. Saw an owl. First time ever. Ok enough... Also, when my husband left his camera behind, it turned up a couple of days later in our next location. Thank you Jen. You were wonderful. We'd love to come back and are already planning a return trip for 2017.

La Guitiere is a wonderful property full of charm and character!

Eight of us stayed at La Guiltiere for a week in August.; and what an incredible week it was too! The house and gardens were full of charm and character, well equipped and incredibly comfortable. We spent the week walking, kayaking, horse riding, vello railing, playing badminton and cricket, visiting nearby towns and obviously feasting and drinking! Our kids(4 teenage girls) cycled around the area everyday and made friends with Jennifer's horses, donkey and Wonka the dog! It was a truly fun-packed week- the icing on the cake being Jennifer the owner and her lovely family who live next door. Jennifer was incredibly warm and welcoming, highly efficient in helping us organise activities and just terrific to have around! We would most definitely recommend this property and would love to return for more!!

Lovely secluded property

We stayed at the beginning of June for a week The property is located in a very quiet part of Normandy, with very large grounds for the kids to play in. The house was very clean and tidy, with more bedrooms than people! The kitchen has everything that you could need. Our children loved playing the the garden, particularly collecting the eggs in the morning and playing with the rabbits that the owner keeps. The gypsy caravan was a great touch full of dressing up gear for them. The weather wasn't the kindest to us, but we had a great time. Had the weather been hot and sunny, we doubt we would done any sightseeing at all! The grounds are perfect for a long sunny day with a bottle of wine whilst the kids play in the garden. A couple of weeks after returning home, the owner emailed to let us know that one of the children had left behind one of their toys. It arrived through the post a few days later! Many thanks for a great holiday. We hope to return.

Grandeur in France

We (six addults, three childeren 3-5 years old), stayed in the country house the first week of may 2016. We felt really welcome by the owner. The house is situated in a tranquille area, with hardly anny traffic driving past. Bigger towns for chopping are not far away. The garden (with rabbits and a circuswagon) invited the children to explore and play. The terras has sun all day. The house itself is big. The and open plan dining area with the kitchen, makes it cosy to be there as a family. The living room offers good comfort. The house also has plenty of toys to play with. The bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms were spacious en comfortable. I would reccomend this house to annyone! For nature (bird) lovers, various owls can be heard during the night and a Cirlbunting was singing in the garden. Ruurd Eisenga Noordwijk, The Netherlands

Great relaxing break

Had a great week in a nice gite run by the marvelous Jennifer and her two sons Oliver and Emile. The property is spacious, well equipped and very restful! I had issues with my car and Jennifer couldn't have been more helpful in liaising with the garage and taking me to pick up my car. Would I recommend this property to a friend or relative? Yes I would and I hope to return next year and may even try the new gite!

A wonderful holiday!

The only reason I am giving this house 5 stars is because.....I can't give it 6!! We had an amazing holiday in La Guiltiere. The house is large and spacious and the gardens are large enough for your kids to almost get lost in. The kids loved the chickens, horses, pony, cats, kittens and rabbits. But most of all they loved Wonka the dog who they basically adopted for our last week. Jennifer is truly the kindest and most patient and easygoing person and having her onsite greatly enhanced our holiday. The house itself is bursting with character and full stuff to do (DVDs, books, games...). Thank you Jennifer for such an incredible holiday and for looking after us so well!!

Fantastic Country Retreat

This well maintained and well equipped house is perfect for a relaxing country retreat. My pregnant wife and 5 year old needed a place to relax after the hustle and bustle of a Paris visit. La Guiltiere was exactly what they were looking for. My 5 year old enjoyed all the toys and dress up clothes that are on the property for community use. My wife enjoyed lounging in the gardens and listening to the birds. The house is exactly as described and very comfortably appointed. The kitchen is well equipped for the most demanding chef. Jennifer, thank you for our time at your place. My daughter has been asking me when we can come back and visit you and the bunny, chickens, and fish.

Relaxing Break

A large old French country house full of charm and character and yet extremely comfortable and very cosy even in the depths of a cold February week. La Guiltiere enjoys a beautifully tranquil setting in the Normandy countryside and yet is only a short trip to lovely local markets and a supermarket. The house enjoys large gardens and we would love to see them at their best in the summer months ! A great base for visiting the surrounding area. Jennifer made booking with her very easy, a lovely lady. A pleasure to visit and a definite to come back again.

Lovely holiday!

We had a lovely stay - the house was great with loads of space for everyone! The pool was really good and a really nice place to cool off in after a hot day! The gardens were lovely - the horse, the dogs and the chickens were fun especially Monty and Wonka visiting every so often to see if there was anything left after a picnic in the garden! Jennifer was fab, very friendly and helpful! Recommendations for visits - Bagnoles de l’Orne is good with pedalos and the crazy golf by the lake! The park and chateau are lovely with a play area for the children too. La Cure Gourmande is a real gem of a creperie - booking recommended. The boulangeries in Lassay les Chateaux are very good and the cider museum near Lassay - Le Royer Josselin et Aurore was good to visit. Overall a fab holiday, thanks Jennifer!

Beautiful property in a lovely location. The house and gardens are everything I'd hoped for and more. Just a very short drive for any supplies and gas. Many activities and sights to enjoy all within an easy drive, and returning after a day out felt like coming home. The peace and serenity of this property afforded me true relaxation. The owner, Jennifer, is an absolute gem - so warm and welcoming. I look forward very much to staying here again.

About the host

Hosted by Jennifer Stocks

Host profile image
Originally from Buckinghamshire, We moved to France in 1990, our boys were 6 and 9 . Kids were dispatched to the local school and became Frenchified in no time but It took me a little longer. After almost 30 years I'm getting there. The accent remains firmly in place and apparently, my use of the French language can at times be rather imaginative.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the house right from the start. The fact that it was the only one we saw that had a roof, bathroom and central heating (kind of) helped. Looking at old photos now I think we must have been mad. It was the neigbours who clinched it for us. There is a great sense of comunity here and I guess because we are all rather spread out, people makemore of an effort. This time of year is especially neigbourly with the great exchange of garden plants and produce.

We didn't realize at the time but the house has a fascinating history. We are only the second family to have lived in the house since it was built at the turn of the last century. We still have visits from people who want to see the hand stencilled walls or just see inside. Monsieur et Madame Messiere were the last owners. Monsieur was a Mayor of Thuboeuf and Madame had a reputation for being a little strict and few got further than the kitchen door in her day.

It's a fabulous house and I try not to forget how lucky I am. It's so peaceful but when you need a bit of life we have a little gem just 10 mins away, Bagnoles deL'Orne. It's not to everyones taste, very old Parisienne and Poodle, but it's great for people watching and a lot closer than Paris.
