A little about location:

Villa Piazza is situated in the midst of the village of Piazza al Serchio which itself has various traditional shops, supermarket, small Tuesday morning market, bars and restaurants, banks, station for easy exploring and beautiful river for trout fishing and playing.
The train station has direct trains to Lucca and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and it is possible to visit Pisa, Florence and the seaside with one change, and the cinque terre with two.
The villa is well located for exploring the local market town of Castelnuovo which is a 20 minute drive, the gorgeous and popular mediaeval town of Barga which is a 35 minute drive and the stunning walled mediaeval city of Lucca which is say 1 hour and 10 minutes away. Pisa, with its leaning tower is a 90 minute drive, and one can visit Florence in 2 hours. The famous Wind Caves are a 45 minute drive.

Closer to home there are plenty of little historic villages to visit, many of which have local festas in the summer. There are also the lakes of Gramalazzo, Vagli (with its hidden village submerged by the water) and Pontecosi, and some guests love to swim in the river.
The villa is also ideally located for visiting the local Fortress at Verrucole which is a good afternoon out, with stunning views and some interactive activities for the children. Also close by is the Buffardello tree climbing and zip wire park (ideal for both adults and children of all ages with a variety of runs) where one can take a picnic and spend the entire day in the welcome shade of the forest.

The real beauty of this area is the dramatic mountain scenery, and the hundreds of hilltop villages to explore, endless picnicking opportunities, and the wonder of a non touristy holiday ......

Absolutely Fabulous

This is an absolute gem, the facilities are fabulous, we loved the outdoor living space in paricular set amongst the beautiful gardens. We made great use of the impressive BBQ and Pizza Oven, and had a lot of fun with the Fussball table alao. The pool was a lovely temperature, and views were magnificent. Very handy for the regular trains to the rest of Tuscany and beyond, Perfect for our 2 families!

Fantastic

I booked this lovely villa for a family celebration. Wow what a place, more than enough space for the 10 people who stayed. Great location in the middle of Piazza Al Serchio. I would definitely love to come back again.

Perfect ;o)

We rent the house with some of our friends, in total we were three famillies and had enough space for all of us! The house is clean and really offers all you would need for a good holiday! The area is just a little bit calm, not enough acticities for children... but nothing to do with the house! ;o) We recommend!

An amazing Italian Villa with great pool.

The Villa in Piazza al Serchio is a lovely place to stay with a big family. The property is well located an has an amazing swimming pool to relax. During the whole day the pool has sunshine. The village is without any tourism and the local people are very friendly. Prices of food and beverages are very low. The owner of the villa mrs. Rita is taking good care of her visitors. She surprised us with several local foods. The property is very clean. The interior is typical Italian old style. By train you can travel cheap and easy to the touristic cities like Lucca, Pisa, Florence. Overall a very nice location for a Italian Holiday.

Very impressive with immaculate gardens and pool

We were a group of two families who had a lovely stay at this property. The property was spacious with ample facilities for a large group. The gardens and pool area were absolutely lovely and immaculately maintained, the heated pool was also a real winner with the kids! In addition to the the owners were lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed Rita's tiramasu and creme brulee.

Fantastic property and pool in beautiful village

We had a wonderful stay in Piazza al Serchio. The house is extremely spacious with 2 kitchens, 5 big bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. The garden and pool-area is the best of all! Lots of space to play and the pool is large and clean. Rita and Carlo took good care of us. Rita even came over with cakes and tiramisu 3 times in one week! The village and area around is beautiful, food is cheap and the train station is 10 min walk away. Very convenient for trips to Lucca and the caves in Aqui Terme. I will definetely recommend this property!

Wonderful property and wonderful hosts!

We have just spent two weeks with our extended family at Villa Piazza and I can honestly say that it is by far the best holiday rental I have ever stayed in. This is no basic holiday let but a genuine family home full of beautiful things. It was spotlessly clean and immaculately presented. We felt very privileged to stay here. The gardens and pool are beautiful and there is everything here you could wish for. All this made even more special by the owners Rita and Carlo, with wonderful homemade cakes and desserts.Such a warm and generous welcome seems typical in Piazza al Serchio, everywhere we went, butchers, baker, cake shop and pizzeria we were met with a little English and lots of smiles. If you have done the usual Tuscan trip and are looking for a genuinely Italian holiday in beautiful surroundings that is less touristy this is the place for you. We had great days out in Lucca and Castelnuovo and drives in the surrounding countryside. If you have the chance to book this villa I would not hesitate to recommend it.

amazing villa and beautiful area

We stayed in the Villa for 2 weeks in August with 4 children and 4 adults and had an amazing time. The villa is soooo spacious with enough bathrooms for everyone. It's the most well equipped holiday villa I have ever stayed in with proper cots for the baby, high chairs cooking utensils everything. The WiFi although chargeable was better than our service at home with no buffering at all.. The gardens and pool were fantastic, although the pool was chilly it didn't stop the kids being in it, but it has no shallow end so they needed arm bands but there are large graduating steps which worked perfectly for our 10 month old to sit and splash on. The village is so friendly and welcoming and the supermarket is well stocked with everything you need. We didn't book a car the first week but actually would recommend a car to get out and about and explore the restaurants. Although there is a very good English speaking taxi driver in the village. Rita the owner was so lovely and welcoming and brought us yummy treats she had cooked for us! Tuscan retreats I can not recommended high enough. Lorraine was always available to help with anything we needed and we will be booking again next year! Over all don't hesitate to book this villa!

Villa piazza second visit

This was our second two week stay at villa piazza and we were not disappointed. Rita and Carlos really look after their guests.any small problems were sorted straight away. Rita's home made treats were as tasty as we remembered from before. It certainly helps if you have some knowledge of Italian especially in local restaurants. The perfect villa for a large family holiday or group of friends.

Good spacious accommodation for a family holiday

This was our second family holiday in Villa Piazza. The spacious accommodation and lovely pool with surrounding garden is ideal for a large family group. However, we did notice this time around that the villa appeared a little tired with some of the bathrooms/shower areas in need of cleaning and maintenance. The poolside furniture was well used and some needed replacing. We appreciate that the villa is a traditional family home but our overall feeling was it needed a good clean and some repair work inside and out ie the glass in front door was cracked and upstairs shower screen was broken making the shower unusable. Although the village of Piazza Al Serchio is small there are two supermarkets, bakeries and other shops all within walking distance, plus a few restaurants. We did have two hire cars so were able to visit Lucca, Cinque Terra and Florence but as there is a railway station in Piazza I think it would be possible to stay at the villa without the use of a car. The owner of the villa visited us on several occasions and brought some lovely treats ie cakes, wine and tiramisu, making us feel very welcome. All in all we had a very enjoyable family holiday at a very affordable price. We feel that with some maintenance work and a thorough clean this villa could be much improved.

A summer of Joy in Piazza al Serchio

We, as a family, rented Villa Piazza for 4 weeks in June 2014. The house was spacious, well equipped and perfectly positioned for a fantastic holiday. With 2 kitchens and 4 bathrooms we had no problem with space and the outside space around the pool was were we spent most of our time. Only 5 mins walk from the train station, this suited us perfectly as we were all travelling at different times and did not all have cars. It was also very close to the village that allowed everyone the autonomy to do as they pleased, eat when they wanted, walk when they wanted, sleep when they wanted. The village is not very big but this brought a friendliness and familiarity with the local people. It was not long before we were chatting over a glass of wine with the locals. There are a number of excellent pizza restaurants in Piazza and you dont have to break the bank to eat out most nights. Piazza is also close enough to had day trips to Lucca, Florence, and Pisa and we would all just jump on a train, again, so people could come and go as they pleased. The owners Rita and Carlo could not have done more for us, sorting any issues quickly, and baking the most amazing cakes (Rita not Carlo). We hope to return to Piazza soon. All in all 5 stars

Absolutely wonderful villa & location...and owner!

Once again we feel that we struck gold with our selection. Villa Piazza was absolutely fabulous. From the villa itself with its space, amenities & location, to the lovely owner Rita who lavished some very nice goodies on us during our two weeks there. It's hard to know where to start re the villa. The photos certainly don't do it justice. The space inside & out is unprecedented in our experience - third time in a villa in the Tuscany area (note - it actually has 5 'bath'rooms & not just 4). The pool & facilities were the best we've ever had & the children's facilities in particular were also much used. Oh & the beds are very comfy too! + it's a very well stocked villa. The pool is cleaned & gardens maintained on a regular basis. Piazza al Serchio is a lovely village to stay in & has sufficient amenities for anyone without access to a car - from the shops, restaurants, train station & bus stops (we did have a car & went further afield). To eat locally we would recommend La Capannina (Roggio), the pizzeria at the opp end of Piazza Al Serchio (actually San Michel), Gepy & Gepy (2 mins from the villa), & Bertolini's in the square. All serving fantastic food at very reasonable prices. This is the second time we have used TuscanRetreats & won't hesitate to do so again & will certainly recommend you & this villa in particular to others.

Lovely, spacious well situated villa

Just a note to say how delighted we were with Villa Piazza, both the house and area were perfect for a holiday in Italy, and we had stunning weather pretty much every day. The house itself surpassed our expectations, the interior is like a family home, and the gardens and swimming pool are lovely. As well as the comfortable and spacious rooms mentioned in the other reviews, we were impressed with the lovely seating areas outside the house, ideal for enjoying a glass of wine after dinner. Plus, since we have young children, the retractable pool cover was great for our peace of mind. The house is in a quiet situation but only a short walk from the centre of the village which has a supermarket, bakery, restaurant etc. (it is probably worth noting that being in the mountains the roads are of course very steep). But it is also a short drive from many pretty villages and towns. We were an extended family party so the house was ideal in providing space for everyone to breathe and plenty of running around room for our two young sons (2 and 4). We found that they were happy to amuse themselves for ages in the playhouse, which combined with the swimming pool, meant we spent much more time based at the house than with other holidays. There was also the unexpected bonus of the delicious pastries and cakes brought round by Rita several times during our 10 day stay! We can also recommend La Capannina restaurant in Roggio for its very reasonably priced delicious food in a beautiful setting. Finally, I cannot finish this review without noting how incredibly helpful Lorraine and Fabrizio were when we needed their assistance when one of our party became ill. In short, for anyone looking for a holiday home in Italy with plenty of space, close enough to amenities that you are not tied to a car, and with plenty to see and do within easy reach, then I highly recommend this place. We can't wait to return!

Great Villa on great location

We stayed one week in this great villa on a great (and less known) location in Tuscany, the Apuan Alps. If you love nature, you must visit this region. If you want to visit Lucca and Pisa it's also possible, it's an hour drive to Lucca and 1,5 hour to Pisa. There are 5 spacious rooms and 4 bathrooms. The pool is big and we loved it (and our kids even more :-)) The little minus are that the interiour from the villa is a little outdated, but that has it's charm. It's also not the cleanest villa we rented. Overall a 4 star rating and I would recommend this villa to rent.

2 Families with Children aged 8-16

A fantastic 2 week break in Villa Piazza. We were 2 families who drove from South Wales to sample the local culture of Tuscany as well as the bigger cities and towns. Firstly after a long drive we were greeted by Carlo and shown around the delightful Villa, the photo’s on the website do neither the interior or exterior justice. The exterior has everything you need to relax by the wonderful pool, enough seating to relax and lounge by the pool with plenty of other options to eat and socialise. The large table by the BBQ and Pizza Oven was more than able to seat our 9 hungry mouths for lunch and dinner. The table football also kept the children happy and the outdoor playhouse for the younger ones. The interior is very sizable and enough places to get together or if you need it, time to yourself, the bedrooms also are very large and the beds are comfy which is a must. There are also enough bathrooms, shower rooms and toilets to avoid the morning and evening rush, the place was spotless and extremely well maintained. Piazza al Serchio although a small village has everything you would need for your day to day living with the Market on Tuesday breaking things up. There are a few bars and Restaurants in the village and would highly recommend the Pizzeria on the outskirts of the town back towards Aulla – Pizza’s all round and drinks for less than 70 Euros – you’ll struggle to find better Pizza’s. We went back one Friday for take outs and I think the whole village was there but the cold beers helped us while we waited. We didn’t use the car much when we got there as we travelled everywhere by train, it’s easy with English language ticket machines. We did Lucca, Pisa and Florence by Train, although we did drive to Lucca when we went to Florence to avoid waiting for a change which can add extra time to the trip. Florence is Amazing and worth the effort and Lucca like a mini Florence only takes just over an hour on a direct train. Castelnuovo is also worth a visit if not just for the fantastic gelato at the Fuori Dal Centro, we drove as it’s less than 30 minutes by car. A decent E’Lecrec supermarket is also only a further 15 minutes towards Lucca. We also enjoyed cycling up the Garfagnana Alpes (we took our own bikes) and saw some amazing scenery along the way but not for the amateur cyclists as they are some pretty serious climbs. Rita and Carlos were perfect hosts and they were kind enough to welcome us with wine and the best fig and honey

Fantastic Holiday

I have just returned from a week at this villa - it's absolutely lovely - the photos do not do the pool area justice. The owners Rita and Carlo were very friendly and on two occassions bought us a huge Tiramisu. There is plenty of seating areas around the villa and everywhere was spotless. The Village is small but has a few places to eat with friendly staff. A totally relaxing holiday - except for the drive to the villa from Pisa airport - directions supplied could have been a bit clearer!!

Fabulous Group Villa

We were two families with five children between us from 7 to 17. The area is very friendly but bone up on your Italian or take a phrase book, there is not much English spoken at all! We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Piazza al Serchio! We arrived on the Saturday at about 4pm to thunder and rain, but lots of people smiling and finishing off the clearing up. By the time Rita had shown us round the immaculate house, complete with a welcoming home made giant plum tart and bottle of Vino Frizzante, the sun had come out and everything was done! It was a lovely, very Italian greeting!! The house seemed very much a home, and there was as said in the details, a lovely sense of space and light. We felt able to spread ourselves out and enjoy quieter times while the children were noisly enjoying the excellent and warm pool! I hope they didn't spoil the neighbours tranquility too much! Our only minor critisicm is that the dishwasher and hob had seen better days, but were fully functional. The villa description is accurate and importantly the beds are comfortable! Rita and her husband appeared a couple of days after our arrival with 10 freshly made individual pizzas, then the following week Bruno brought us a bag of chilled drinks and having heard us sing Happy Birthday to one of the children popped in with a family sized Tiramisu! We felt extraordinarily priviliged and well looked after! Over our fortnight there the sun shone consistently while we managed easy train trips to Lucca and Florence (how hot was that!) and press number one on the automatic ticket machine to get the right tickets - important tip! We used our cars to enjoy Barga, Lake Gramalazzo - fantastic swimming!- and the nearby villages. Piazza al Serchio had everything we needed while still being a very off the tourist trail, quiet, Italian village! Our Italian has improved immeasurably!!! We played in the village river and went to the Pisanino and the other pizza restaurant at the top of the hill. Both helped us with the ordering and produced wonderful meals. We felt very rested with our lazy days in the sunshine, but still managed to instill a bit of culture in the children! We all from age 7 upwards thought the area was spectacularly beautiful and hope to return and explore more another time. Abbiamo avuto una bellissima vaccazione!! (Well, sort of...!)

Fantastic house in beautiful surroundings

The nine of us and the dog enjoyed the perfectly equipped house in a dreamlike environment. Although the weather was changeable, we were able to use the pool sufficiently. Shops and good restaurants were within walking distance. Also possibilities for excursions were sufficient. We're always happy to come back!
