About this property

Characterful property with 5 acres of land in the hills above Hebden Bridge

The ground floor accommodation is extremely stylishly appointed with a large, open-plan living/dining room at its centre. This room features Jacobean-style painted wall panelling as a stunning backdrop. Stone mullion windows, beamed ceilings, oak floors and doors lend a sense of rustic charm to the fabric of the building and yet there is every modern amenity. From a stable-door on one side and French windows on the other, there is access to wooded and landscaped gardens with long-reaching views of the surrounding countryside and a private area to sit and enjoy the location. A bird feeder regularly attracts woodpeckers, jays and other garden visitors and deer and hares can often be spotted in the woods. Last summer we were lucky enough to spend many a summer evening watching a barn owl hunting in the fields in front of the house!
Brian and Carolyn Harrison have used their knowledge of interiors garnered from over 30 years working as freelance journalists on national and international home-interest magazines to refurbish and decorate what is essentially part of their home – albeit completely separate with its own front and back doors. ‘We have tried to instil a real sense of home from home with every possible comfort included.’
We also have a wonderful sauna in a separate building, a few steps away from the barn. It has an area to relax on loungers in a warm, under-floor heated environment and in the same building a cold rain shower so that you can have the hot and cold experience. Decking that runs around the building affords beautiful views over the valley

The location is second to none for walking enthusiasts with some amazing routes accessed directly from the property up to the nearby heather-clad grouse moors or down to Colden Water – a beautiful woodland with river running through it.

As keen walkers ourselves and being semi-retired with a lively, energetic standard poodle called Ruby as part of the family, we know most of the local footpaths and can’t wait to share them with you.
Cycling is another very popular pastime in the area and the routes can be very challenging, which is why you often see mountain bikers using the area to practise for competitions. If you wish to bring your bikes – there is a locked and alarmed shed in which to store them.

If you just want to explore the area, there are plenty of interesting places to visit. Hebden Bridge itself - a really buzzing and vibrant little town - is only 2 miles away and can be reached by bus twice an hour from the top of our drive. Haworth – with the Bronte parsonage and its cobbled streets and quirky shops – is only 8 miles away and Halifax – location for the recent TV series Gentleman Jack and Last Tango in Halifax is 8.5 miles to the east by car. The larger conurbations of Leeds and Manchester are both accessible in around an hour by car, depending on traffic. There is also a good train service from Hebden to both cities.

Beautiful getaway with a great vista overlooking Stoodley Pike. The barn is immaculate and to a very high spec. Spacious with plenty of character. Atmospheric. Beautiful getaway near Hebden Bridge

This is a beautiful, stylish and very comfortable getaway in lovely countryside within easy reach (bus, car or 45 minute rural walk) of Hebden Bridge. The feel is relaxed but under that is meticulous attention to detail that makes this cottage a delight to stay in. Excellent facilities including a great shower and a convenient kitchenette with modern appliances. It’s right on the Pennine Way so perfect for walkers and there’s plenty of space to sit outside and enjoy the views (weather permitting, which it didn’t when we were there). The hosts, Carolyn and Brian, are very friendly and efficient and although they live on site (useful if you need help) they go about their own lives and leave guests to do the same. This is one of the best places we have ever stayed and would highly recommend.

Very Accomodating Filming Location

Very accomodating for our particular request of using the location for our student short film, both over the three shoot days and letting us visit twice beforehand for location reccees. In that regard, I couldn't have asked for anymore. The property appeared well looked after and clean, and was accurate to the photographs (but even better in person). Communication was also prompt, and you always had answers to questions we had.All in all, we had a perfect experience and the property and surroundings looked great on camera. Hopefully we'll be able to share a copy of the film with you eventually. Thank-you both for everything.

A barn full of delight !

We have just returned from a delightful week at Sutcliffe Barn. Carolyn and Brian have been charming hosts and we have enjoyed our time in Hebden Bridge and the surrounding area immensely. We were lucky enough to get good views of the 2 resident barn owls on more than one occasion and the swallows flying in and out of their nesting site never fails to charm. There is so much to see and do in the area we will definitely need to return.

Lovely cottage in tranquil location

Lovely cottage, very nicely finished and plenty of room. Right next to the Pennine Way and there are lots of other well signposted public footpaths so it's quite easy to explore the area. There's a steep hill down into Hebden Bridge but quick enough in the car and there's a nice walking route if you've got time. Helpful hosts who were always available but not intrusive.

Perfection!

The Barn was an oasis - secluded away from roads & surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside with fab walks on the doorstep. The Barn was beautifully decorated & styled - if I could give it 20 out of 10 I would!

Beautiful barn in a wonderfully peaceful part of the Pennines. Good pubs nearby and a short drive to Hebden Bridge where there are lovely shops, cafes and restaurants. Plenty of great footpaths on the doorstep and good birdwatching from the barn. Kind and friendly owners.

Absolutely perfect.

The property is amazing, more than we ever expected, with beautiful gardens and extensive grounds. Although the building is apparently 17th century, the internal refit nearly all furnishings are brand new, totally sympathetic and obviously expensive, from the ultra modern (fully equipped) German kitchen with Neff oven etc. to the huge bathroom. The bed and linen are wonderful. A winter stay would be so cosy with the gas 'log burner'. The attention to detail is faultless, from the dirty boot tray to the expresso machine. A complete home from home. This has been the first of many stays. Carolyn and Brian could not have been more helpful, and yet unobtrusive, I cannot rate this too highly, if there was an option of ten stars, that's how we would vote.

Why they chose this property

Hebden Bridge is a unique little town nestling in the hills between Leeds and Manchester. It has a rich industrial heritage, which can be seen from the myriad hillls dotted around the steep-sided valleys. Whilst once these 19th century buildings were busy producing textiles, today they are more likely to house arty cafes and independent retailers selling all manner of interesting things. Over the years we have lived here, Hebden has become known for its quirky independent shops and galleries, which often sell arts, crafts and food products that are made in the valley. From jewellers and potters to bread makers and micro brewers, there is a real wealth of creativity to be discovered. In 2016 this originality was rewarded when Hebden deservedly won Small Market Town in the Great British High Street awards.

You will find something going on in the town most weeks - piano festival, folk festival, open-studios during the arts festival, burlesque show, vintage car rally, handmade parade with giant puppets. Every week in Lees Yard off St. George's square in the centre of town, there are markets, selling local food and produce, second hand goods, arts, crafts and artisan products and in 2016 they won Britain's Best Small Open Market.

Cafe culture is alive and well in Hebden with over a dozen to choose from and there is a lively pub scene with some offering delicious pub grub and others live comedy or music acts. Eateries on offer span 12 different countries - so you could almost eat your way around the world! Cuisines range from Thai, Tibetan and Turkish to Janpanese and Italian.

Other good things to do in Hebden include visiting our volunteer-run cinema on Burnley Road in the centre of town with its comfy armchair-style seating or take a stroll along the canal bank and admire the many colourful narrow boats moored alongside.

There is always something different happening in Hebden, which is why we never tire of the area or the people.

What makes this property unique

The oldest part of Sutcliffe House dates from around 1650. Built in the longhouse style common in the Pennines, the farmhouse became a restaurant in the 1950s. The owners at the time knocked through to the attached barn in 1946 – according to the date stone above the door – to extend the accommodation. Walkers on the Pennine or Calder Ways – which both cut through our 5 acre plot of land – were invited to stop for chicken and chips or other home-grown farm produce. The Sutcliffe brothers who owned the place back then had a passion for collecting antique Jacobean furniture and the story goes that all the public rooms were filled with impressive pieces of heavy oak, plus some very important artwork (including a Joshua Reynolds painting which is now in the Manchester Art Gallery) Over the years, the restaurant became more refined and let out some of its rooms for bed and breakfast.

In 1988, after falling in love with the property over Sunday lunch, we bought it and turned it back into a private house. We landscaped the grounds, built lots of dry-stone walls and planted well over 1,000 trees. Three years ago, after semi-retiring, we decided we wanted to share our location with people who love to explore the countryside and set about turning our barn into a one-bedroom holiday let – ironically separating it once again from the main house. It now has its own front and back doors and is totally independent from the main building.

We feel Sutcliffe House is a very special property and the Barn shares all the interesting period architectural features and therefore all the character. Its location never ceases to delight us, as there are so many wonderful walks in the immediate area and further afield. The wildlife we see on a daily basis, both on our land or in the surrounding countryside is a joy and Hebden Bridge has so much to offer. As a holiday destination, we hope you will love everything as much as we do!
