About this property

Country house between Parma and Reggio Emilia w/Wifi and swimming pool

A completely independent apartment of approximately sixty square meters consisting of a double bedroom (Queen size bed 160 x 200 cm), "en suite" bathroom, sitting room with dining corner and fully equipped kitchen. Supermarkets, groceries and shops within five minutes so as good restaurants and pizzeries. Patio equipped for outdoor living, barbeque, garden and swimming pool. The swimming pool is shared with the owners.
Located between the villages of Quattro Castella and Bibbiano, the apartment is part of a seventy-hectare property mostly cultivated with vineyards (Lambrusco) halfway between Parma and Reggio Emilia which are easily reachable in half an hour by car. Other destinations of historical and cultural interest easily reachable by car are: the 11th century ruins of the castle of the Vice Queen of Italy Matilde of Canossa, the castles of Colorno, Fontanellato, San Secondo Torrechiara and Sabbioneta (UNESCO world heritage site) and Modena, the vital center of the "motor valley" with also the Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani and Maserati museums. An excellent "base" for deepening your knowledge of a still quiet part of the Emilia Romagna region not frequented by mass tourism, known by most at the moment only for the offer of excellent DOC foods such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Parma Ham, Felino salami, balsamic vinegar, tortellini and for its renowned cuisine in the tranquility of the countryside.

Stefano and Margherita were the kindest hosts. Check in was very easy and they showed us around the property. The house itself was very beautiful, and in the heat of August it stayed very cool. We were given wonderful recommendations to get our groceries and wines. The region itself was very beautiful. We would recommend all big cities around to visit. We spent our time mostly visiting vineyards, which were plenty of in the region. So, after our busy mornings with visiting vineyards, cities or having a hike, we could come back and relax and take a dive in their pool to refresh. We sincerely loved the place, and would definitely come back next time we travel to the region.

Well equiped rental, lovely pool!

We were very impressed with the quality of the provision in this rental. Everything had been thouht through and excecuted extremely well, from the insect netting (which actually worked!) to the fans and of course the huge pool! We had our privacy, but Stefano was always available if we had needed any help. We would love to stay here ahain.

A quiet retreat in the middle of a Lambrusco vineyard

Easy to follow travel instructions helped us to find this tucked away barn in a vineyard with everything that you could possibly need. It was immaculately clean and well organised. The owners had provided a very helpful dossier of local excursions, restaurants and amenities. Stefano and Margherita were delightful hosts respectful of the privacly of the guests but with good English and very helpful when needed. Parma ,Reggio Emilia and Bologna (by train) were within easy reach and were full of art, arhchitecure and atmosphere. The difference for us was this was set up as a home and not just a holiday let. It was treat.

First-class holiday

It is impossible to over-praise our stay at La Barchessa. The accommodation itself in this bucolic oasis is perfect for a couple - beautifully appointed, packed full with useful information from Stefano and, something by no means a given with holiday lets, blessed with a well-equipped kitchen - even sharp knives! Outside is a wonderful secret garden in which we spent many hours sunbathing, and a lovely non-chlorinated pool to cool off in. Everything has been very carefully and considerately thought through by Stefano and Margherita - and it is those two individuals who elevate a wonderful stay at La Barchessa from the merely excellent to the extraordinary. They are delightful, witty, intelligent people, and it was an enormous privilege to have met and spent time with them. They also knew exactly how to strike the right balance between socialising with us and leaving us in privacy. Truly a holiday that will live long in the memory.

A great choice

Ideally located to access rail and road links to explore this beautiful region of Emelia Romagna. La Barchessa is an oasis to relax in, to enjoy the beautiful grounds, the rose gardens, so much wildlife - Bird song, red squirrels, cookoos, hares, hawks, deer, Willy the heron & his friend coming into feed at the fish pools, sunsets. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, leaving was a bit sad & saying good bye to both Stefano and Margherita who are such good hosts, very helpful and very kind.

A wonderful week of fine weather in the company of our favourite property owners.

Our second stay at the property was a repeat success. The situation is lovely, with easy access through the vineyards. The house itself is comfortably appointed, in a charmingly old-fashioned way, but with all the necessary amenities. We still had much that was new to us to explore in the surrounding countryside and towns. Stefano and Margherita are wonderful hosts, and their command of English means that they are always able to provide helpful advice.

A great property, full of character and Stefano and Margherita were great hosts

We thoroughly enjoyed our week stay at La Barchessa; the property is extremely comfortable and full of great features and furnishings. It is comprehensively equipped with all the utensils/crockery you could possibly need. Stefano and Margherita were extremely hospitable and ensured we had a thoroughly relaxing stay. The property is in a great location for exploring the surrounding towns, but equally allows you to stay more local if you prefer - we went for a couple of bike rides around nearby villages on the bikes that are provided, you can also go for walks on the estate itself and the pool at La Barchessa was very welcome in the hot weather! We would certainly like to visit La Barchessa again in the future.

A really relaxing holiday in a very quiet and peaceful location

Well renovated and very well equipped one bedroom accommodation in the countryside set amongst fields of crops and vineyards. Extremely friendly and very helpful hosts who have made every effort to help their guests have a happy and successful holiday with lots of information available about the local area.

A relaxing friendly stay

Lovely property, very comfortable and well equipped. It had everything we needed. Stand and Margarita were perfect hosts and even arranged a visit to a local parmigiano producer. The converted barn is perfectly located for trips to Parma, Reggio Emilia and Bologna and to the hill in the south.

Return to "La Barchessa"

We have just returned from our third two-week stay at La Barchessa. Stephano and Margherita greeted us like old friends and made us especially welcome. Their wonderful hospitality, interest in our welfare and the friendly, relaxed atmosphere they create make it a pleasure to spend time there. The apartment is spacious, spotless and very well-equipped with the mesh on the windows keeping the mosquitoes out and the ceiling fan in the bedroom helping to keep you cool at night. The pool is a godsend after a hot day's sightseeing and having a drink and eating out on the patio in the peace and quiet is just wonderful. La Barchessa makes a great base from which to make day trips to visit the centro storicos of the main towns from Piacenza down to Bologna and up to Mantova plus all the incredible castles dotted around the region. You can also drive up into the hills south west of Parma/Reggio/Modena for some great scenery. Just be careful to use the internet to check opening times of places of interest before setting off - some are open at weekends only and almost always closed for two hours' siesta at lunchtime. Stephano's folders of notes and guides to the area are fantastically comprehensive and extremely helpful. Do visit the pizzeria in Via Roma in Quattro Castella and sample a gelato from the gelateria in the square. Thank you, Stephano and Margherita, for a great stay again. We would urge anyone contemplating a visit to Emilia Romagna to look very carefully at staying in La Barchessa - you won't be disappointed! Craig and Maureen

Friendly welcoming hosts and a delightful property in an excellent location.

Stefano & Margherita - and other members of their family - were the friendliest hosts we have met in 30 years of taking holiday properties in France & Italy. Margherita speaks very good English and Stefano is positively fluent. The property is easy to find and to access - not always the case in rural Italy. The quarter-converted farm building offers very good quality accommodation on a large estate, surrounded by Lambrusco vines, and comes equipped with all the little extras that help a holiday along - including Sky HD TV, which was appreciated during Euro 2016. Located in the flatlands, road access to major centres like Parma and Modena is as easy as it will ever be, while the hills to the south allow instant escape into a quieter, more varied Italian landscape.

An oasis of calm

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at La Barchessa. The property is very well equipped for self catering and was lovely and cool despite the temperatures outside being over 30 degrees. We used the pool and private garden and charming belvedere but not the bikes! Stefano and Margherita are excellent hosts and gave us lots of good advice on where to eat and where to visit. The amount of background information which they have left in the barn is the best that I can recall being provided. One week in Emilia Romagna is not enough. I thoroughly recommend staying at this charming property.

A Wonderful Stay

From the moment we arrived at La Barchessa, Stephano and Margherita made us extremely welcome. Despite the unpromising small light industrial area on the edge of Bibbiano, the property is very secluded, sitting amongst fields and vineyards with views to the south towards Quattro Castella (just down the road) at the foot of the eastern edge of the Appenine hills. It is within easy reach of Parma, Piacenza, Reggio and Modena with their wonderful centro storicos and more museums, churches and art than one could hope to cover in two weeks. (Remember that all churches close at midday for at least three hours and double-check opening times of all museums you plan to visit). La Barchessa is peaceful, spacious, comfortable and very well-equipped with many lovely old prints and pictures on the walls. The small above-ground pool was a godsend at the end of a hot day's sightseeing and it was a delight to drink and eat outside in the secluded paved area. Stephano and Margherita were absolutely charming hosts who provided a fantastically comprehensive guide to the local shops and restaurants plus the main sites in Emilia Romagna (as well as a G&T and Lemoncello on a couple of evenings!) and their description of La Barchessa was spot on. The local Conad supermarket is only a few minutes' drive away and it also offers cheap fuel. If you're a car fan, ensure you visit the Ferrari museum in Maranello. We only tried a couple of places to eat but we especially liked the pizzeria in Via Roma in Quattro Castella. All in all, a great stay. Thankyou, Stephano and Margherita for making it so enjoyable for us. We'll definitely be back!

beautiful place to stay

what a lovely place to stay if you want peace and tranquillity then this is for you. If you want cities then they are not far away if you like the countryside with tiny villages then they are even closer. we wanted the later and to take it easy which you can do here, the bed is so comfy I have not slept so well for a long time, the kitchen has everything you require but as there was a heat wave while we were there it was salads on an evening. Our hosts were brilliant giving advise on the best places to visit along with directions. A must if you are a foody is Acetaia Picca where balsamic vinegar is produced and can be purchased. Once again thank you for a wonderful stay in your beautifully converted barn.

Delightful location

The property and location delivered everything described in the property details, with the added benefit of our charming hosts Margherita and Stefano and of course their two lovely dogs! La Barchessa provided us with all the comforts of home, with excellent cooking facilities, delightful antique furniture and a really comfy bed (a must for a relaxing holiday!). During our stay the weather was unseasonably hot, however we enjoyed the shade of the gazebo in the garden and had a daily "cool down" in the wonderful pool. We enjoyed touring the historic region visiting many castles and towns. It was a joy to discover a new part of Italy and La Barchessa provided us with the perfect base to explore from. We also made time for some retail therapy and visited the outlet village at Fidenze, a 45 min drive up the A1. We really enjoyed La Madaleina, a lovely restaurant in Quatro Castella - superb freshly cooked local food. However Stefano's barbecued lamb was difficult to beat! The quality of the accommodation and this "undiscovered" part of Italy was a delight to experience - maybe we should have kept this to ourselves so that we can return!! Our sincere thanks to Margherita and Stefano.

A Place With An Outstanding Charming Aura

We were looking for a quiet place in a beautiful italian landscape to spend our holidays. What we found was this overwhelming little paradise: The very tastefully furnished 'La Barchessa', a perfect renovated barn with a wonderful big garden for our private use. After a few moments we felt ourselves at home; our hosts, Stefano and Margherita, are very friendly people, warmhearted, charming and always helpful. We are sure, we will see them and their paradise again. Many thanks to Paolo Borciani, without him, we had never discovered this place. Arrivederci

Love this Property

We loved our stay at Quattro Castella! The property was exactly as described and so much more. It was peaceful and relaxing and perfect after a day of exploring the area. The kitchen had all the utensils we needed for preparing our meals. We loved the living room area and spent our evenings talking about our day and planning the next. We used the info provided by our host to plan our trips and meals. Such a perfect stay. Would definitely stay here again!
