Our stay in the Wooden Cabin exceeded our already high expectations! The cabin, location and atmosphere are superb. We have absolutely no criticisms whatsover. We intend returning as soon as possible.

Escape from the world.

Absolutely superb stay in a cabin, that allows you to shut yourself from the world and literally not see another person for days. We loved the peace and the birdsong and the sounds of water running. But we were also able to jump in car and a ferry or two and cross the fjords to see other things. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend and hope to return soon.

Magical!

We stayed in the wood cabin for 4 nights and we couldn’t have dreamed of a better experience. It truly is a magical and mesmerising place - waking up to the ever-changing views of the fjord, valley and forests each day and having our morning coffees on the deck whilst cuddling the cats and seeing the fog slowly lifting from the mountains flanking the fjords - priceless. The cabin itself is super comfortable, warm and cosy and has everything you need. We hiked a lot and even attempted some rowing in Eldar’s boat, but we clearly overestimated our rowing skills a bit :) Ortnevik is a lovely little village, the main road literally ends there and whilst the shop has some of the basic supplies I’d definitely recommend stocking up on groceries (and wine, if you’re like us!) before coming to the cabins. Even though it was August and we were very lucky with the weather, we built a fire every day as the evenings do get chilly regardless of the season. To us, this just was the perfect place to relax, unwind, fill our lungs with air, disconnect from everything and just simply soak up the beauty around us. Thank you Eldar and family for creating such a magical place and being such kind hosts!

A peaceful retreat amongst the mountains.

We had a wonderful four nights in the wooden cabin and really felt 'amongst nature'. Lungfuls of fresh Norwegian air. The cabin had everything we needed, was comfortable and cosy; a real 'home from home'. we made good use of the balcony to relax and plenty of walks nearby for exercise. Many thanks to Eldar for helping us arrange local transport prior to our arrival, for making us feel so welcome and collecting us from the ferry. I would recommend this to everyone!

A cosy hide-away in a beautiful and tranquile setting

My partner and I had a fantastic time staying in the Wood Cabin. It is very cosy, especially with a fire lit up, and has a beautiful view of the fjord. The cabin has everything you need and more, so there is no need to encounter the world outside unless you want to take a stroll in the stunning surroundings of Norwegian wilderness. Eldar was a very welcoming, kind and helpful host. This place definitely feels like a home away from home!

Stunning views, great cosy and very comfortable cabin. Couldn't have wished for a better holiday!

We are a family of three with a five year old boy and booked this trip hoping the location would be interesting enough to keep a child happy and relaxing enough for the grown ups to chill out! It was perfect! The landscape changed daily, so our view from the cabin was breathtaking every moment of every day. The walks in the surrounding area kept us all interested (mum not so outdoorsy, husband very outdoorsy) and we even managed a little mountain climbing that wasn't too much for our son! It made coming home to the super cosy comfort of our cabin all the more delightful! We had a mix of snow, rain, fog and warm sunshine - the constant shift was lovely and this location would be wonderful any time of year. Would definitely go back! Worth noting that there is no local pub, bar, cafe or anything of that sort, so arrive prepared! It's very remote and this is it's charm.

avwonderful place!

We have had a great time during our stay in the wood cabin. We received a warm welcome and were impressed with the creativity, kindness and ingenuity of the owners. The wood, stone and big cabin are all very beautiful. The wood cabin has a homely feel, the floor heating and fire place as well as the kitchen and bath facilities made our stay very comfortable. The view is incredible and even though we had a lot of rain we have enjoyed the many walk around the village of Ortnevik. The small town shop is also very convenient. It is great fun to borrow the owner's rowing boat to have a paddle in the bay. We would love to come back here and see the surroundings in winter sometime.

Stunning area and perfect cabin experience

I wanted to make sure I added a review for this accommodation because it really is a little gem. My wife and I escaped for 5 nights over Xmas and our only regret was that we did not stay longer. Roaring log fire, stunning view over the fjord, all the appliances you could need, clean and pristine. The walks in the local area are so lovely we never went on any of our planned day trips. The snow that fell made the whole thing perfect! We had a bit of hire car trouble but Elder and Anders were on hand to get us on the move again, thanks again.

Christmas at Ortnevik

We've spend the Christmas-weekend in Ortnevik, and it was wonderful! Just a few hours drive (if you don't try to take the mountain road in winter, as we did..) from Bergen. Lovely situated, between fjords on one side, and mountains on the other. The cottage is the perfect place to have Christmas, with a fireplace, but also the necessary luxeries (like a dishwasher etc.). Very cosy. Heidi and Elder are truly the warmest and most helpful people around, a one-hour drive back to the busstation because our car was broken, was no problem at all! It was a wonderful period, and hopefully, we will return some day.

Es war ein traumhafter Urlaub!!!

Wow!

Wonderful hospitality in a wonderful setting

My wife and I spent four days in the wood cabin on the Brekke farm in Ortnevik and they couldn't have been better! The cabin itself was lovely, nice little kitchen, wood fireplace and fantastic views of the fjord from the front porch. Heidi and Eldar really went out of their way to make us feel like guests rather than just customers. They even let us take out their sail boat to go fishing in the bay (careful, when they warn you to stay in the bay there's a reason! The current in the main fjord is quite challenging to sail against!). We wished we could have stayed longer. It was four days of peace and quiet in a beautiful surrounding. One note: the village does have a small store and it's quite well stocked for a small town grocery but it's not a supermarket. If you're planning on cooking a lot and need particular ingredients, it may be better to shop before arriving in town. Overall, we just can't say enough positive things about this place. We'd go back in a heartbeat.

18 May Wood Cabin

My wife and I stayed in the Wood Cabin for 5 nights starting 18 May as part of our honeymoon. We had a bit of bad luck as we stayed during some unusual bad weather, but it was a great way to see how well built the cabins are as there we no leaks or dampness inside despite all the rain. As for the town of Ortnevik, it was very peaceful and is great for people looking to get away from congested city life. There are several hiking trails that are suitable to people of all levels. We often strayed from the path to explore and feel more in nature. We were lucky enough to spot a fox and quite a few deer early in the morning. If you want to explore other towns, there is a car ferry that goes from Ortnevik to Vik on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We took the ferry on Friday but based on our experience would have gone twice. TIP: In order to not feel rushed, I would recommend spending a trip just to explore Vik without your car and then a second trip with your car to visit other sites. The Aurland Viewing Platform was a fun drive up, also a quick visit to Undredal for cheese and a boat ride in the Naeroyfjorden will be well worth it. There is a small shop in Ortneivk that had enough choices for food, but it certainly is cheaper if you bring your own. We were flying in from out of the country so we couldn't bring much, but we didn't mind supporting the local shop. I would not hesitate to stay here again and would highly recommend this cabin for people looking to see some beautiful country!

Away from it all

Brilliant location to get away from everyday city life. Great hosts Heidi and Eldar letting us try deer meat, brilliant stuff. Pity we cant get that stuff off of the shelves in Tesco here in UK :-) Apart from my wife being sick for 3 days from catching a few bugs on the plane on the way over, it was perfect to be stuck indoors and just to take in the scenery. Even though we were in the big cabin and it was just the two of us it was brilliant. My advise to anyone traveling there..... if you want a holiday to get away from it all then this is the place....car hire is a must.....book your car on the ferries THE DAY BEFORE because you do not want to be stuck on the other side of the Fjord - it can be a very very long drive around to get back...... beware of the sheep hanging around the entrances and exits of tunnels when its raining :-) ...... take a good pair of walking shoes.....take a ferrie to Vik, drive to Flam and take the train up and down the mountain. Apart from that just enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The perfect quiet and romantic Honeymoon

Our perfect quiet and romantic Honeymoon We had a perfect wedding in mid-October – sunshine, relatively warm weather and brilliant autumn colours all around us. It was the best day of our life together so far. And the best week was to follow in the end of October: Many members of our family and friends were quite surprised when we told them that we planned our honeymoon in Norway. They have all thought that we would prefer the “Sun, Beach and Ocean” holiday to Norway in the end of October. But we got everything that we expected from our honeymoon! PICTURESQUE LANDSCAPE: The Cabins in Ortnevik are located in an amazing scenery. There is the Sognefjord you look down to and the mountains around to look up to. There are plenty of paths to walk on; you can discover rivers, lakes and waterfalls; and spots with a great view on the town of Ortnevik and the Sognefjord. PRIVACY/QUIETNESS: The town of Ortnevik itself is a quiet little town – and since the Cabins are quite a bit outside of Ortnevik itself you have a perfect surrounding to relax and enjoy the silence and the privacy. ROMANCE: On two nights we enjoyed a few hours in the hot tub under a sky filled with twinkling stars. Outside the temperature was around freezing point, but in the hot tub we had around 40 degrees. These were definitely some of the most romantic hours we’ve ever spent. On all the other nights we enjoyed our time cuddling in front of the fireplace watching movies, reading books, listening to the crackling of the fire... EXCELLENT HOSTS: Since we arrived in Ortnevik on a cold day (there was quite a bit of snow on the ground) we were very happy that ‘our’ Wooden Cabin was cosy and warm when we arrived. The Brekke Family has prepared everything for us to make us comfortable. The cabin was clean, there was enough firewood stacked in front of the cabin for the whole week and whenever we needed anything we could count on their help. THANK YOU! (Second part of description follows - since we have much to say) :)

Perfect stay!

Clark family (Mum, Dad, boys age 12 and 10) stayed in July 2010. The cabin was absolutely as we had hoped - small but very clean, cosy and well laid out. Great views as well. The owners could not be more friendly and helpful. The local walking was beautiful and spectacular - and you get it all to yourself; we didn't meet another walker away from the village all week. Ortnevik itself is attractive and peaceful. We came looking for a Norwegian idyll - and we found it!

A Real Treat.....

Possibly the best few days away I have ever had. Every aspect of this short break was perfect. Visiting in January, I had imagined, and hoped for, the whole winter thing of snowy mountain walks with beautiful scenery and then evenings in front of a roaring log fire. Well this was certainly what Norway delivered. Loads of snow and the scenery and peace and tranquility of the area were amazing. Having said that though, if you're not up to plowing through 2-4 feet of snow the range of walks may be a little limited in winter and the snowstorm conditions on one day were certainly not for fair-weather folk. The impressively constructed cabin was incredibly cosy, warm and comfortable and also extremely well equiped. Great range of crockery, utensils, pots, pans etc. Even without the log fire the underfloor heating did a great job of keeping the cabin warm. Also lots of piping hot water so always a nice hot shower for when you come in from the cold. Very importantly, Heidi & Eldar were the most excellent hosts. Extremely friendly, welcoming and informative, but also very good at letting you enjoy your own time. The dvd library and all the other equipment available to borrow is also an extra perk and very good as all included in cabin rental. I flew from Gatwick to Bergen with Norwegian and low-cost flight was approx. £70 inc taxes/luggage etc. Then took bus from airport to Bergen centre ( approx. £10) and then coach to Oppedal (£23) before being picked up for last drive to the cabins. The buses/coaches were extremely comfortable and reliable and felt safe, despite the very snowy conditions. If hiring a car this time of year would not recommend that unless experienced snow drivers. It's a bit of a long journey, but completely worth it. I am sure whatever time of year you go, the beauty and remoteness of this area will remind you how special nature and the outdoors can be and if you like walking, cycling, fishing and being away from hustle and bustle then the Brekke cabins are a great place to stay. Would advise that area around cabins is pretty hilly, so would not recommend this area if you're not reasonably active, unless you're just happy to sit on cabin decks and enjoy the view (which is still a nice way to pass the day) Will also look to post this review, along with some photos, on tripadvisor.co.uk Finally, many thanks to Heidi & Eldar for being such great hosts and I very much hope to return again. Lovely rural holiday for city dwellers

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Brekke cabin. We stayed there for 2 nights out of our 4 day trip to Norway, and wished we'd spent all our time there. The drive to get to Ortnevik along the Sognefjord (from Bergen) is great, and worth doing, especially since public transport options are virtually non-existent. The cabin is located on elevated ground, with a fantastic view from the terrace onto Ortnevik and the Fjord below. We had a memorable breakfast on the wooden table & chairs on the terrace one morning, the November chill notwithstanding. The cabin itself is lovely, quaint and compact. The fireplace is the highlight of the drawing room, and we spent many hours in front of it. Another lovely feature is the window in the roof that looks out onto the mountain overlooking the cabin. The kitchen and cabin are clean and well equipped with appliances. For the short stay visitor, it is slightly inconvenient to buy all food, including sugar/coffee/salt etc. And it would be preferable if the Brekkes could provide some basic amenities. Also for a city dweller it may be hard to believe that one would have to drive for 1hr to find a capuccino in a cafe. But all this adds up to the rural experience. We borrowed a couple of cycles and rode along some cycling routes (be forewarned that they aren't all exactly low gradient slopes). We also ventured into the woods and walked up a dried river bed. The complete silence that you hear on these trails is wonderfully relaxing. I would recommend that one should allow for plenty of time for this vacation- on the drive, in the cabin, to explore the countryside, maybe do a ferry ride (which we unfortunately didn't)... Overall i would rate this vacation very highly & recommend it to anyone who cares to ask.

think of norway in winter, and Brekke cabins is exactly what you want. atmospheric accommodation with everything you could possible need for a winter treat, in a snowy pine clad mountain retreat. fishing gear, sledges, binoculars, venison!, phenomenal views, rustic charm, log fire.... even wifi, on a mountain side. amazing! all accommodating assistance from ever helpful hosts. even if your luggage is lost by KLM, then heidi and eldar will save the day! thanks for a fantastic norwegian holiday experience. we're even thinking of moving to norway now!!!!!

Twinkling starlight

How we loved Ortnevik, it is now one of the many places that we would like to visit again, the scenery is just out of this world, beautiful with such peace and tranquillity. The cabin was a delight, very clean with everything that you need, we just loved the underfloor heating, looking at the stars through the roof windows at night was amazing. Heidi and Eldar were a joy to meet and so helpful, if you needed anything or wanted information nothing was too much trouble. We only had a short stay and the time passed very quickly, there are plenty of lovely walks near by and we just enjoyed going off exploring stopping off for a picnic on route. I would recommend a car if you want to really explore the area and go further afield, this is something we will do next time.

Wonderful cabin in stunning location

My partner and I stayed at the cabin in May 2010 for 5 days. The scenery was amazing and cabin had everything we needed and more. Lovely log fire, underfloor heating and breathtaking views all around. Heidi and Eldar were very welcoming and generous with their time and all the helpful information before and during our stay. We had some wonderful walks and hikes in the area. This is a great holiday cabin for people who want to get away from it all for a few days; recharge their body and mind.

A wonderful getaway from a hectic life

We have enjoyed our time in Ortnevik. Norway is stunning, high snowcapped mountains, waterfalls and of course the Fjords. The cabin exceeded our expectations, it is like a fairy tale, set in the hills overlooking the Fjord The cabin is so well equiped, everything has been thought of and our hosts have been wonderful. We have seven more weeks of our holiday travelling to UK, but I don't think we will see scenery like this again. We would love to come back here for a white christmas. We will be recommending this place to all our friends.
