In addition to being referenced in the Domesday Book, Great Ayton is also known for being Captain Cook's childhood home. The village is made up of both charming stone cottages and some newer construction homes. Great Ayton is a well-liked picnic location in the summer since it boasts two village greens and a river running alongside. Roseberry Topping, a 330-meter peak, dominates the vista to the north of the settlement. The village has a nice selection of shops and inns, along with eateries and cafes, that serve well to tourists.
