About this property
Water Mill House (4), Burnham Overy Staithe, Norfolk
Sitting on the coast road on the outskirts of the popular coastal village of Burnham Overy Staithe, Water Mill House forms part of the superb conversion of a Grade II listed Georgian water mill. This iconic house has wonderful views over the mill pond, the River Burn, and the surrounding water meadows. Enjoy sights and sounds from the plethora of coastal birds and wildlife that frequents this area from the comfort of your own private first floor balcony.
Burnham Overy Water Mill dates from 1790 and was a fully operational mill for around 150 years until it fell into disrepair during the war years. Devastated by fire in the 1950s, it was then acquired by The National Trust who first repaired and then converted it into residential dwellings in the 1990s, that remain to this day. Constructed of brick with a pantile roof, Water Mill House presents with characterful, well proportioned accommodation over three floors and embraces comfortable relaxed living, with easy-on-the-eye stylish decor that complements the property beautifully. The ground floor is principally the entrance hallway from which an oak staircase leads up to first floor. Here you will find a lovely dual aspect vaulted sitting/dining room that runs the full width of the building. Enjoying stunning long distance views to either side, with french to doors open on the south side to a decked balcony at the back of the mill, just the place to take a seat as the sun sets and enjoy a glass of wine. When the days draw in, snuggle up beside the wood burning stove and catch up on the day's events. Next door a country-style kitchen, fitted with handmade solid wood units, has a useful serving hatch through to the dining area, and a pretty window view of the mill pond to the front of the house. The master bedroom (with a king-size bed), one of three bedrooms, is also on this floor, and has use of an adjoining bathroom. The second bedrooms, hosting a king-size bed, is upstairs on the second floor, with a family bathroom sitting between the two. Outside the house, you have use of a sunny decked area with a table and chairs overlooking the river and countryside beyond - an alternative dining option on warmer days.
Water Mill House is a walkers and bird watchers ideal hideaway. Barn owls, marsh harriers, kingfishers, and huge skeins of winter geese and wildfowl can often be seen overhead. When you can tear yourself away from the accommodation, footpaths right from the front of the mill lead to North Norfolk's wonderful winding coastal path that stretches for miles in either direction. Observe marshes teeming with birdlife and sandy beaches beyond. Be sure to drop into the charming pubs and pretty villages along the way.
Water Mill House is also offered as a sleeps six option: Water Mill House (6).
