About this property

The Sculptors' House In the Historic Centre Of Uzès

The 'Sculptor's House is in the 'Bourgades', district, a conservation area just off the circular boulevard. The Place aux Herbes with its lively markets is only a couple of minutes away, as is Boulevard Gambetta, its shops, restaurants and banks. At the same time the street is quiet compared with the boulevards or the market square. If you feel too tired to cook, one of the best restaurants in town is 20m up the road! The pedestrian street, mostly residential, is cobbled, but is easily accessed by car to load and unload luggage or shopping.
This town house, which dates back to the 18th century or perhaps earlier, was renovated and extended by a sculptor in the early nineties, then bought by another (the present owner's wife), in 2002. It retains its character as a family home, friendly and well equipped. If you are looking for somewhere completely made over and aseptic, it is perhaps not for you! There are original oil paintings, sculptures and other works of art throughout. Also plenty of books, records and board games.
The ground floor is a garage and storage area with its own street door and is not included in the rental. The front door opens onto a flight of stairs leading a to bedroom on the left. Straight ahead is the main living area with kitchen and dining room with a ceiling of exposed beams. At the far end there is a window the width of the house which slides open and almost turns the living room into a verandah. A glass door leads onto the terrace with marble bistrot tables and a parasol. From the living area an open plan hand crafted wooden staircase leads to the upper floor. There is a large bedroom with double bed, and a smaller one with two single beds, one of which is on stilts. They share a separate toilet and a bathroom equipped with two handbasins. The downstairs bedroom has its own bathroom and access to the toilet next door, which means that no one needs to wake anyone in the night! The entire house is very practically designed and heated or cooled by reversible air conditioning, a great asset in July and August when temperatures can be in the mid 30s C°. Free street parking can usually be had at the bottom of the road, or for greater security there is an underground car park just over five minutes walk away! You can arrive on any day of the week that suits you.

Rustic and homely charm Well placed and great home from home

Loved staying at this lovely house, so local for amenities and local attractions. Parking nearby was easy and free. Outside terrace was great & Olivier was fantastic at sorting a cot out for our baby. Only negative was that the bed upstairs was uncomfortable and the whole place could be modernised - however this could take away the charm of the place? Piano in the lounge area was superb and lovely to have. Communication with Oliver was great and reliable. Overall it’s been a fantastic week staying at Oliver’s house and couldn’t have asked for a better place. Thank you :)

A lovely sojourn in Uzes

Oliver's house is a lovely, interesting and conveniently located house to stay. It felt like a family home and was very suitable for our longer stay. Oliver was very welcoming and responsive, but had a good sense of when to 'out of the way'.

Back to a second home!

We stayed in this lovely house in 2013 and have since stayed in several of Oliver Bevans holiday rentals. Although the others are great the Sculptors House is really special. There is nothing you need that's not supplied. The Air Conditioning is first class and in the hot weather we had it was very very welcome. The house is across the road from Place aux Herbes and so it is a very central position. Most of all the host is extremely contactable and helpful with any and all queries. Very much recommended, we will definitely be back.

Thoroughly recommended

A spacious and well-equipped house which, with its beautiful artwork and large book collection, felt more like a real home than a holiday rental. Very convenient location right next to the historic centre, shops and bus services (and the Saturday and Wednesday markets - not to be missed) and within easy walking distance of country walks in the woods and by the river. Uzes is a lovely town and one week was not long enough. We hope to return and would certainly book one of Oliver's properties again next time - he was an excellent host.

Peace and tranquility in Uzes

We stayed two weeks in the Sculptor's House in Uzes in August along with our 3 year old grand-daughter. It was everything promised by the web-site's description and photographs. It is superbly positioned in Uzes, very comfortable, clean, well provided with utensils and equipment and delightfully decorated with lovely art and sculptures. The wonderful collection of books in English and French was impressive and enjoyed by my wife, myself and the children's section loved by our grand-daughter. Uzes is a beautiful small town with lots of good places to drink or eat, even with a three year old. There is lots to do in the surrounding countryside. Our only shock, especially as we live in Australia, was the local swimming pool in Uzes. Board shorts and tee shirts are not allowed to be worn in the pool and there is no shade provided in the pool area. A melanoma's delight as the temperature was in the mid-thirtys with a blue sky and a blazing sun. Oliver was a charming and helpful host and we would strongly recommend his delightful house.

Beautifull home in Uzes France

our stay was early June 2014 loved this house, exactly as the photos showed it is very close to the centre of town with a lovely little bakery straight across the street. Got up of a morning put the coffee on and went over to the bakery for our croissant lovely way to start the day. Our host Oliver was very helpful with hints, directions and advice, we had lots of day trips plenty to see a car is a must having said that there is plenty to do in and around the town, beautiful home, beautiful town, beautiful country loved every minute. Booking was easy no issues at all spoke to owner a couple of times before arriving I would definitely recommend The Sculptors House to anyone wanting to stay in Uzes

Perfectly situated home from home

We really appreciated the opportunity to stay in an interesting, artistically presented townhouse which is less than 5 minutes' walk from the beautiful main square of Uzès. The house is very well equipped and homely, with an impressive book collection. It was good to be on a pedestrianised street (though this doesn't guarantee peace and quiet) and we were lucky to find free parking for our under-used hire car nearby. Everything you could want is within walking distance and the shopping is touristy but tasteful. There is a huge choice of restaurants and we found the owner's recommendations better than our own choices. The house's terrace has no outward view but is very pleasant for dining. It was an ideal base for us and we were totally charmed by Uzès.

Great holiday house and location in beautiful Uzes

The house had everything we needed from the coffee machine to the guide books and from the comfy beds to the light terrace. Oliver was very helpful and the location was perfect, so close to everything Uzes can offer. The secure parking 10 min walk was good value at 50 euro for the week. The only problem I had (I'm a light sleeper) was being woken by rubbish collection early each morning and my husband struggled with the heat at night but these things did not affect our overall very positive impressions of the house and we would recommend anyone stay here - especially if they have an interest in art.

Location, fully furnished, elegant and practical

We spent a glorious month in this beautiful house. Full of books, free wifi, good tv and international phone line, beautifully and totally furnished, and close stroll to everything, yet very quiet. Early morning croissants and newspapers only steps away. This is a sophisticated and gracious house, and loved the elm staircase to the upstairs bedrooms and enormous two-sink bathroom. Good whiteware and sensible kitchen. We used the decked courtyard every day. A perfect home from home. Highly recommended!

chilled house in great location

Lovely, homely house in a great location for exploring Uzes town and the surrounding area. Oliver provided great instructions for getting to the house and so the process was easy. The house has the right balance of artistic charm and the facilities you need and we enjoyed having lovely croissants and pastries, bought from the bakery 30 seconds away, each morning on the terrace. Overall a great value place to stay.

Perfect situation,lovely well appointed apartment.

At the first glimpse inside this wonderful apartment we knew we had chosen wisely. My husband and I had the upstairs bedroom (actually there are two bedrooms upstairs) a lovely bathroom with a bath and my brother had the entire downstairs living area with bedroom, bathroom, lounge etc to himself. It was great, because as older adults we all had privacy. The lovely living area, going out onto a very private courtyard, holds great memories of long warm evenings with a nice bottle of French Rose. The apartment is over the road from an excellent Patisserie, two local bars (where we got to know the locals quite well) and a brief stroll to the Market square where we bought so much local fresh produce, fish, cheeses and wine. The kitchen is very well appointed and we had no problems in cooking some great meals while we were there. We are returning to Uzes this year but only as a couple, so we are renting another of Oliver Bevan's smaller apartments, The Matisse Apartment. I only hope it is as good as the Sculptors'House!

Two Beds, Two Baths, Two Floors, Two Minutes from Place Aux Herbes

If you need accommodation for four and the privacy and comfort ot two level living with two bedrooms and two bathrooms and still want to be in the heart of the inner city of Uzes, there is no better value than this. Some updating of fixtures and fitment would be a bonus but our two week long stay recognized the benefits of this spacious layout. Direct to street entry, a plus. A long, eight person kitchen table was welcome. Plus comfortable living room overlooking rear patio and a lower stone tiled garden. Washer AND DRYER, a plus. Separate freezer too. DW range and gas cooktop as well. Everything you need is there. Comfortably away from the bustle the main artery that encircles the old town, you are maybe 30 seconds to reach it. Over the road and you're in the Place aux Herbes in another minute or so for the two weekly markets and the restaurants and shops in the Place and surrounding it. Beyond the Place to the Palace is only another 2-3 minute walk. Add the layout, its amenities to the location and you'll enjoy what this cottage has to offer.

Spacious house in an excellent location with a gracious host. Nice wooden deck as outdoor space; well equipped kitchen; A/C in every room and strong wifi connection. Entry stairs may be difficult for older, or physically challenged persons. Some fixtures and furnishings should be updated.

About the host

Hosted by Oliver Bevan

Host profile image
My wife, the painter and sculptor Pat Thornton (1946 - 2009), bought this town house after moving from London, England. We both pursued our lives as working artists, exhibiting in the South of France and in the UK. I still continue and have a small permanent gallery in Uzes. To see what I do, you will find me easily via search engines.

Why they chose this property

We wanted at least one really big space, somewhere to eat out of doors, a property with character, and the charm of old architecture combined with modern comforts. After many frustrating months of search, this was clearly the one which matched our needs.

What makes this property unique

What grabbed us above all was the wall of sliding windows which link inside and outside. We liked the terrace being on the same level as the kitchen and dining area, and the big olive tree in the yard. As the generous kitchen space is part of the main living area, the cook is not cut off from guests and family. In addition thick walls provide sound insulation, and the house is calm. Its position in Uzès is very desirable; it is in a street of mostly 18th century stone houses, which has recently been restored and paved with cobbles. It now forms part of the historic conservation area and is just a few steps from the Place aux Herbes where the markets are held, with none of the inconvenience of noise which residents of the Place complain about. .
