Hi we enjoyed our stay very much, lovely & comfortable. Nice for walks, loved seeing the birds outside the kitchen window & feeding them. Great place to get away from it all
A really peaceful location with only birds and animals near. The cottage has almost everything thing you will need for your stay. The views are lovely and the garden was alive with many different types of birds. There are so many we had to fill the bird table every morning. The cottage faces west so there were some lovely sunsets.
In the garage are some fold out garden cushoned chairs so you can find a nice spot in the garden when the sun was out, there isn't an accompanying table so we ended up buying one so we could take out drinks out with us.
The interior of the cottage was clean and tidy and the kitchen well equiped, the only thing I would add would be a washing machine. It is a little bit dark inside the lounge as you might expect from a farm cottage however the peace and quiet more than make up for this.
There were some nice places to eat in Newtown (about 30mins), especially Jacks cafe where the portion sizes are massive.
This is an absolute gem of a property, in a truly jaw droppingly beautiful location. The hosts were extremely kind & helpful & the property itself was lacking nothing for a perfect week off the beaten track. Many thanks for a fantastic holiday, we hope to return soon!
Before I had unpacked my bags, I was wondering when we might be able to return! The secluded location of the cottage was ideal, being nestled in the side of the hill with the most stunning view from the front door. The cottage itself was cosy and comfortable and yet spacious enough for four people. The kitchen had everything you needed and we immediately felt at home. One of the things that sold it for me, when I was scrolling through the lists of possible venues for a week away, was the bird life that we were told would frequent the garden. We were not disappointed. I loved having to keep their food supplies stocked up and gained so much pleasure from watching their daily antics from the kitchen, bedroom and sitting room windows. The stormy weather and a short power cut did little to spoil the enjoyment of our holiday and we would love to return. It's a cottage not to be missed!
A very lovely cottage with a stunning view across the surrounding hills. The wildlife in the small garden is amazing and can be hypnotic to watch even on a rainy day. Would highly recommend this accommodation.
We loved our stay in this peaceful cottage. There was everything you needed to self cater, the kitchen had plenty of pots and pans, even to do a full roast! And the views of the bird tables meant the boys were happy to wash up everyday!! The beds are super comfy, the bathrooms spacious and the fire a must after a long wet walk on the hills! Wonderful
This cottage was amazing, beautifully presented, so peaceful and quiet except for birds and sheep. It is 5 miles from the nearest village of LLanidloes, which is what attracted us. That village is lovely, old and interesting. We will definately be returning.

Absolutely fantastic
We really enjoyed our stay at the Bird Cottage! It's very remote, no traffic noise, a real 'get away from it all' holiday.
The cottage is very comfortable and clean, the furniture and furnishings in keeping with their surroundings. We loved the log fire 🔥🔥🔥. Plenty of small birds were visiting the feeders and a red kite flew over most days. Would love to visit again in the winter with snow on the ground.

Delightful, secluded cottage
We were very comfortable, and warm, despite a day of snow. We enjoyed the details about the history of the cottage which made it clear how much care the owners had given to make it attractive, both inside and out. The owner's interest in birds was an added, unexpected, pleasure as we were able to watch masses of birds each day as they descended onto the feeders outside the kitchen window. There were good walks in the area and many places of interest to visit. I would recommend the cottage to those who enjoy a secluded location and can cope with mud in wet weather. Those who don't use sat navs (us!) would welcome better information on how to find the cottage; the information was provided in the cottage, but not in advance.

Beautiful cottage in quiet location with all that you need to have a restful break.
We arrived to heavy snow but the owner called to make sure that we had enough food. The cottage was warm and the addition of fresh flowers was lovely. Definitely ' far from the madding crowd'.We saw so many different species of birds in the garden, rabbits and pheasants. Locally the Red Kite centre and the Hefren Forest were well worth visiting.

Wow! What a view and what a great place
Beverly and i stayed at Johns Hideaway for an extended stay in Wales. I kept saying to myself after we returned to John's after a day's outing "there's no place like home".
We felt right at home the minute we walked into the house. Very comfortable and homey.
The extras are the wonderful, tranquil view out front, the wildlife and birds because of John's passion as a wild life photograher. He has feeders which we filled daily and we saw countless amounts of birds, rabbits. pheasants and a constant influx of activity all day.
The house is so comfortable, warm and the kitchen allowed us many great meals.
John was very helpful getting us settled and his housekeeper Mandy was great about making sure all was in order.
I will not forget my time in Wales and thank you John for sharing your incredible hideaway.
It was quiet and peaceful. Just what we wanted.

Perfect!!!
What a wonderful, cosy cottage with fantastic views of the welsh countryside. We chose this cottage for its secluded location and the wildlife and it lived up to our expectations and more. We are very keen wildlife watchers and photographers, John had left us a long list of what we might be lucky enough to see during our stay and I can honestly say we saw most of them including woodpeckers, siskins, redpoll, bullfinch, red kite, buzzard, sparrow hawk, warblers as well as all the usual garden birds. There was also voles, rabbits squirrels and a hare.
But the highlight of the week has to be watching a little field mouse carrying huge leaves from the undergrowth to its hole in the lawn a few feet away from us. We were also privileged to be visited by 2 hedgehogs on most nights.
We were also extremely lucky with the weather which was warm and sunny for most of the week, in fact even the birds did a bit of sunbathing.
Now back to the cottage, it is spotlessly clean with comfortable sofa and bed. The kitchen is well equipped and with the view onto the garden it is a pleasure to wash up while watching the birds flitting about in front of the window.
Please don't make us go home tomorrow
We will definitely be back.

Brilliant get-away-from-it-all cottage!
We had a fantastic time at John's cottage. Andy the farmer and co. were brilliant and we ❤'d the peace and quiet. I'm very allergic to burning coal but love a wood fire - John was super nice to ensure the coal was all cleaned out for us which meant we were nice and toasty in the evenings :) . Will definitely be back. Thanks again John!

COSY COMFORT.
This is a relaxing, comfortable cottage in a delightful location. Spent a peaceful few days here in a suprisingly sunny October ! We didn't even venture beyond the garden as had just wanted to rest and relax and already know the are quite well.
The cottage was warm ( despite having a beyond owners control 3 hour power cut one morning !) and well equipped. Watching numerous birds is always entertaining.
The only things that could be improved is an updated internet that was quicker and more reliable and a better TV in the sitting room. What is it with holiday cottages that have ancient televisions ?!
We would love to stay again and experience a different time of year there.

lovely cottage in an amazing position with extensive walking from the front door
what a fab place to stay. the owner has taken great care to make this feel like a home from home and in such a beautiful and peaceful location too.
the nearest town LLanidloes is only 10 minutes away and very nice with not bad pubs, a good supermarket and various shops but there is nothing within walking distance. you need a car unless you are serious about hill cycling. amazing weather just made it better.

Cosy cottage, lovely views, clean and well equipped.
Really quiet location in lovely setting. Walks from the door onto the hillside and Glyndwr's Way, and plenty of attractive circular walks within a 30 minute drive of the cottage, on hillsides, by streams and near reservoirs. Tourists well catered for in the Elan valley and at the Gilfach nature reserve; limited elsewhere and signposting and maintenance of footpaths was sometimes poor.

Quiet cottage in gorgeous Welsh countryside
This cottage was just what we needed and what we expected of it.
It is situated in a quiet corner of the hills between Llanidloes and Rhayader. We enjoyed the stunnig views from the garden and went walking on Glyndwr's Way. The location is very secluded, which we found very restful.
The cottage itself had everything we needed, even quite reliable Wifi, and was spotlessly clean.
An added bonus were the birds: they are fed regularly so we had our daily visit of a woodpecker, several jays, chaffinches, etc.etc. as well as rabbits and squirrels.
Andy Owen, the neighbour who takes care of the practicalities, was most helpful.
I would certainly recommend Cwmbys to anyone who needs a restful time in a beautiful spot.

Cosy and private 'hideaway' in wonderful Wales
If you are looking for a place to stay that is quiet, private and tucked away from the towns and villages then this would be ideal for you. It was warm, modern and comfortable and the kitchen had most of what you'd need for simple cooking. The fire was easy to get going and when the weather outside was wet and windy it was pleasant to simply stay in. We did have a little trouble with the shower and supply of hot water but that perhaps is to be expected in such a property and location. The surrounding countryside is, indeed, stunning and lovely for walks, even in wet weather! We were hoping to cycle more but the landscape is very hilly and a bit of a workout, which is fine in itself but cycling to the nearest towns of Llanidloes or Rhayader wasn't an easy ride. Ideally we would have liked not to use the car so much and be able to walk or cycle to the nearest shops and towns so this might not be convenient for some people.
On a practical level then, be aware of the location and stock up on provisions before you arrive. Much of the garden and surrounding area was waterlogged at the time of our visit (late December) so bring wellies, and the path/lane leading to the cottage was tricky to traverse: you would be better off with a 4x4 but we managed it in a VW T4 and some capable driving!
We did not meet the owner but the neighbours were lovely and helpful and the birds also prevented us feeling lonely!
Overall a pleasant stay and I would recommend Cwmbys if you want to get away from things for a few days in the heart of beautiful Wales...

About the host
Hosted by John Daniels
I am an animal/wildlife photographer and run photographic workshops from the cottage in the spring. Based in Dunsfold, Surrey I travel extensively to take images which are published in books, magazines etc.
Why they chose this property
I bought this property from friends who were also keen bird and nature lovers. I had stayed there several times and when the opportunity came to purchase it I jumped at the chance to own this beautiful cottage. The bird feeders are topped up regularly by our neighbours and since 1991 76 different species of birds have been recorded there.
What makes this property unique
Stunning views over the peaceful valley. The cottage sits in a one acre wildlife garden with a stream.
