Superb

Absolutely fantastic property - very peaceful & quiet and wonderful owners. Our little girl fell ill on the way to France and Adrian went with us to A&E and to see local GP (both during the weekend). Honestly, the owners couldn't be more helpful. Both Adrian & Pat are the loveliest people you'll ever meet. Thank you so much both for everything, we are forever grateful to you and we hope to come back again next year. Thank you for the memories. Much love x

What a fabulous place. I completely understand why previous visitors have returned to this property multiple times. Pat and Adrian were extremely welcoming but in no way invasive during our stay. They gave us lots of ideas of things to do during our stay. There are plenty of restaurants a short drive away in Montbron, Angouleme and Piegut. A particular favourite of ours was Aux Caprices, opposite the Intermarche in Montbron. There are great swimming lakes close by eg Lac de St Estephe. The road cycling here is fabulous with a voie verte very close to the house. The memorial in Aradour is well worth a visit. The weather was fabulous ranging between 27 - 33oC with a bit of a breeze. I cannot recommend this place enough if you are looking for a peaceful place to holiday but with lots to do close by, only a short car journey away. Pat and Adrian are fabulous.

Relaxing stay in an idyllic rural setting

This is the first time we have stayed at the same property twice, which says it all really! Lovely little gîte in such a gorgeous setting - so quiet and peaceful - beautiful views out over the fields. The only other property in sight is the owner's. Pool is fantastic, and very safe with the fence. Cottage has everything you need. Owners are great - friendly and helpful whenever you need anything, but not at all intrusive. There is plenty to do - some great, safe cycle rides on the nearby voie vert route, some caves to visit, a great market at Piegut, nearby chateaux etc. Montbron is nearby and has great supermarche and some nice little restraunts. We enjoyed our second visit even more than our first one!

Beautiful rural get-away

We had an absolutely wonderful relaxing stay here. Set in the countryside, this cottage is so quiet and peaceful, but there are lots of nice things to do nearby if you want to. First the basics - kitchen was incredibly well equipped with everything you could possible want. Beds were comfy, and the rooms were nice and cool even in 33-34C° heat. Although the owners live next door, it is really private and secluded. Pat and Adrian were very welcoming on arrival, and were very helpful whenever we had queries. The pool was an absolute luxury - very safe, as completely enclosed. We could let the kids play in the garden on their own without any worry. If you get bored of lazing round the pool, there are great bike routes nearby and lovely walks. Also kayaking and tree climbing. There is a big inter marche about 10 mins drive away in montbron - and also some nice restaurants. Altogether an absolutely lovely get-away!

Just wonderful. Tranquil, great pool beautiful views fantastic hosts

We had such a lovely two weeks. Beautiful setting, very peaceful but amenities not too far away; we had great weather and the pool was a wonderful bonus. I also loved all the different seating areas and privacy. Pat and Adrian are just so lovely, nothing was too much trouble. We felt so well looked after and cared for. Thank you so much. Would highly recommend.

We would like to say a huge thankyou to Pat and Adrian for making us so welcome lovely people. The house catered for all our needs. And was a great escape from the heat and it did get hot ! The pool is lovely... and we needed it to cool off. Beautiful countryside and views and so peaceful. Must mention the fresh cherries..very tasty. If you want to de-stress and get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, look no further than here, really worth a visit

Lovely house, great location, relaxing holiday

We have just spent a lovely week at Pat and Adrian's charming house near Marthon. The accommodation is typically french, very comfortable and relaxing, and the salt water pool was perfect for lazy afternoons in the sun! The surrounding garden was a real bonus and the local area is lovely with some scenic walks and pretty little towns not too far away. The house itself was also a great location for attending our niece's wedding nearby. Pat and Adrian were generous hosts who made us feel very welcome - we definitely wanted to stay for longer!

Fab pool, great holiday.

We had a lovely week staying at the property in August 2018. The cottage is really well equipped; the outside space is a real highlight with a great outdooor dining area, and a further built in bbq area. Pat and Adrian are really friendly and helpful. The swimming pool is amazing, was really warm when we were there and is kept super clean. The surrounding area is peaceful which suited us just fine, nice towns and good cycling nearby.

The location is ideal. Very peaceful with beautiful views over sunflower fields. Supermarket is short drive away and the area has lots to do. I would highly recommend this holiday cottage.

August 2014

We spent 3 absolutely wonderful weeks in Adrian and Sue's lovely cottage. The cottage is in a perfect spot in a beautiful part of France, and is very private despite the owners house being a short walk away. We had all the amenities we needed for a great holiday with spacious rear grassed terraces, a lovely pool area with sunbeds, and a wonderful veranda at the front of the cottage that was put to good use every evening for meals and drinks while we watched spectacular sunsets. Inside, the cottage was equipped with everything we needed and more.. with plenty of room, comfortable furniture, and even UK TV to keep us up to date. We enjoyed our days out to Piegut market, La Rochefoucauld, Angouleme and Brantome - All well worth a visit. Our day at La Rochelle was also amazing and worth the long car journey. Having spent many a holiday in France in the last 20 years or so, we can definitely say we have never stayed in more homely and comfortable place or had more welcoming and charming hosts than Adrian and Sue - we really enjoyed your company at our raclette evening and as your guests for the return fixtures. We wish you every success in the future and we look forward to seeing you both again - we're sure that we will at some point in the not too distant future.

Great place to stay

We rented this Gite because we were coming to the Chateau de la Coronne for a wedding. Let me say that this Gite is ideally placed for anyone visiting the area for the same reason. Notwithstanding the wonderful wedding we were the envy of several of our friends due to the superb accommodation and facilities La Borderie offers. We stayed for a week and this turned out on many levels to be a really good decision. The peace and quiet of the morning broken only by the screech of rooster or pheasant was incredible. We were very comfortable in this well equipped Gite and were very happy that the swimming pool was an ambient 75 degrees. So hats off to Pat and Adrian for our warm welcome and occasional assistance. We are missing you and La Borderie already!

Most Wonderful Gite Ever

Well what can I say this is the most fantastic place to stay. The gite is all anyone could wish for. We had the most memorable holiday here with Pat and Adrian exceptional owners who are so helpful for absolutely anything you should need or know. The area is very beautiful and there are lots of activities around if you wish. This really is the best gite we have ever stayed in, and had everything you could ever wish for - it was exceptionally well equipped. The swimming pool is, of course, an absolute bonus and the setting to die for! We were so impressed with the whole set up here and would like to say we have stayed in many gites before but none which have come up to these standards. Roll on our next visit. Many thanks Pat and Adrian for such a wonderful holiday which we will never forget.

Wonderful, peaceful vacation

Thanks to Pat and Adrian for being wonderful hosts. The cottage was exactly as advertised except the living room couches have been upgraded. It is fully equipped, clean and is in a very tranquil setting. The sunsets behind the barn were beautiful. The town of Montbron is less than 10 kms away and has a great grocery store, Intermarche, that has everything. We purchased fresh meats, fruits and veggies (and of course the great wines) to cook on the outdoor BBQ. We ate El Fresco on the outdoor patio...very nice. Pat keeps flowers all around the courtyard making it a very colorful and picturesque setting. The kids enjoyed the heated pool that was very well maintained and clean. We also dined in Montbron at Moulin de la Tardoire (fine dining) and La Toscane (family pizzeria), both very good. We speak very little French but found most establishments had English speaking employees. We were attending a wedding at the nearby Chateau de la Couronne and this cottage is less than 2 kms away making it an excellent choice for over flow guests. The day of the wedding, all the men/boys went go-carting and couldn't stop talking about how much fun it was however the course is much faster then anything we have at home therefore it is not suitable for little ones. We also took a day trip to Angoleme about 25kms away and a day trip to St. Emilion (winery country) about 90 mins - 2 hrs away. Both well worth the visit. I must admit I was a little hesitant booking on line but everything went smoothly. Pat was a pleasure to deal with. I highly recommend booking this cottage for a very relaxing holiday in the French country side

A Beautiful Gite and a great setting

We had a brilliant holiday at this Gite with our 2 girls (aged 5 and 3). The Gite is well equipped with everything you could possibly need and is very comfortable. The pool is amazing and we spent hours playing in there with the girls. The pool is ideal for young children as it has steps going down into it it is also secure for piece of mind. The Gite is in a real peaceful and tranquil setting and it is beautiful sitting out and eating in the evening after cooking on the wonderful barbeque. There is lots to do in the area and we didn't have to travel too far to do things. The owners of the Gite were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We would highly recommend this Gite to anyone, whether it be for a quite get away or an action packed family holiday.

Brilliant 2 weeks in lovely quiet setting

Property was as it said on the listing. Very clean. We had a great stay, pool is great and was a constant 22C, plenty of room in and out. There are a couple of tables outside, one which we could move wherever we wanted and so we put it under the wonderful weeping willow to have our breakfast facing the sunflower field in the sun from 8am :-) . Plenty of space for parking, grass area for kids (6 and 9) to play tennis, football, use remote control car..etc. BBQ is a must, large stone column with lots of space for those fantastic french sausages and cuts of meat. Kitchen is fully furnished with all you could need and more, dishwasher great, washing machine great as well. House is cool when it is hot outside (32C for 2 weeks and not a single drop of rain when we were there) and warm when cooler outside.Great to be able to watch french channels or UK as we felt like on the day. Another plus is location which means you dont need to worry about he kids being noisy when playing and having a swim. Pool is very safe. Owners leave next door and are very friendly, approachable and strike the right balance between making themselves visible but not interferring in your holiday - you see them as much as you want/need to. And those fresh eggs, yum, we must have eaten about 30 of them - including the 16 the owner gave us when we left :-) Location is good as well, 1m or so to shops, baker, restaurant, tennis courts in small village. And 1m from the Coule D'Oc, a 15 miles car free all tarmac cycling route that the kids loved and us. We enjoyed the pool, had BBQs, drew local scenery, played football, tennis, cycling, did a 5k canoe trip on the local river, visited the local chateau (Rochefoucault), went to the beach, went to the comic museum in Angouleme, tried a few restaurants, lazed about on the roman footbridge nearby where the kids could play in the river...a typical holiday in France :-) We have been to about 10 places in France now and this is at the top in terms of facilities, location and the approach of the owners - go and find out for yourselves! Many thanks to the owners and all the best.

excellent holiday

This was ideal for us: stone house, with lovely courtyard and garden all around as well as really lovely pool. The situation was so peaceful, with fields and woods around, and the very pretty village of Marthon nearby. The first week we were adults and could explore the area, the second week was grandchildren and the pool was much used. There are things to do for all ages in the area, eg three generations went canoeing and had a brilliant time. The owners who live the other side of the courtyard were very nice, and very discreet, only appearing when needed. They directed us to the night market, and a good restaurant in Montbrun. The house was very clean and well equipped and we had everything we needed. Only (very minor) quibble is that the mezzanine bedroom floor creaks terribly, so everyone knew when you got up in the night! However this did not take away anything from our pleasure, and we would love to go back again.

Fantastic Getaway in the Charente region

The property is a real home from home for anyone staying here, it was clean, well stocked, fabulous private pool and so well situated to either relax and unwind or go and explore what the Charente and Dordogne have to offer. The owners Pat and Adrian are a fantstic couple and have great information and recommendations for things to do and places to eat. This is a place that suits all ages and I cannot recommend highly enough, we will certainly book again. We have have already forwarded to several friends and relatives.

Excellent gite in Charante

We had a fantastic week in Pat and Adrians gite close to Marthon. The gite is very private and nicely equipped, we missed absolutely nothing. Having our own pool was a great pleasure, especially to our two teenagers. We loved the barbecue area and used it almost every day. Plenty of room for four people both outside and inside, and our hosts were extremely kind and helpful on any issue. Lots of things to do and see in the area; do not miss canoing, cave visits, markets, a visit to Angoulême etc. And not to forget, Pat's hens lay excellent eggs and the cats were nice company at the terrace in the evening! We will definitely recommend this gite to others and would love to go back at another occasion. The Flindt famliy, Copenhagen, Denmark

A most enjoyable week

A warm welcome from Pat on arrival to this ideal location for a wedding at Chateau de la Couronne. Very well equiped, clean and all in good order. A comfortable gite with its lovely pool and grounds for our week's stay in June/July . It was hot (up to about 35) so we stayed fairly local with the shops and facilities in the village and nearby St Germain meeting most of our needs (except for eggs as those from Pat's hens were wonderful!)

About the host

Host profile image
We previously had a holiday home in the Dordogne, near Perigueux, then we decided to come and live in France but wanted a larger property. We found this property and we first visited the property on a cold winters day and we liked it a lot, even though there was quite a bit to do, particularly on the exterior, so now after living here for 10 years almost, we are pleased with the improvements and we really enjoy living here. We are both from Bradford, West Yorkshire but we spent 22 years living in other countries and places in UK, due to Adrian serving in HM Forces. Adrian had a job arranged with a French company from when we first arrived in France and is still working for the same company. So, we live and work here and intend to remain here.

Why they chose this property

Firstly, we love the location, we are in the countryside, it's very peaceful and quiet, yet very close to Marthon and Montbron for shopping and lots of other facilities.
Close enough to Angouleme and good road and rail connections to the rest of France/Europe.
The cottage is separate from our accommodation and we have our own pool and gardens, parking, etc and although we are on site (next door) we are available if required.

What makes this property unique

The great thing for us about living here in this property is that we still feel as if we are on holiday, even though we live and work here and we work hard to keep the whole property in good order, inside and outside, it's still a holiday to us. Lots of sunshine (usually) and pretty much zero air pollution.
