About this property

Castello di Montegiove restored Castle Olive Mill, Moraiolo

Charming and completely restored 13th century castle olive mill, transformed into a luxurious country house, located just outside the ring wall of Castello di Montegiove.

Montegiove is a lovely and peaceful medieval country village, close to the main communication lines and equidistant of Rome (154 km) and Florence (151 km), it is an ideal base for exploring the historical treasures of Umbria and Tuscany, especially the countryside of the historical provinces of Orvieto, Todi, Spoleto, Perugia and Siena.

The house is equipped with satellite television, high speed Internet connection, independent heating, fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, laundry facilities and drying rack. The house is furnished in the traditional style of a central Italian manor house with a tasteful combination of antique and modern furniture. Extra maid service and private cook can also be arranged.

The rental includes heating, weekly change of sheets and towels, normal final cleaning and taxes.

Moraiolo: 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living/dining-room, kitchen, sleeps: 6.

The ground floor is composed of a large living-dinning room with open fireplace and library, a kitchen with access to a small patio, a master double bedroom with view over the valley and a spacious bathroom with shower. The first floor is composed of a long hall, two double bedrooms one with a beautiful view over the valley, the other with French windows pointing towards the castle. A well-designed modern bathroom with marble sink, bath tub and shower.

The garden has a dining area, comfortable deck chairs and a beautiful view over the valley.

The castle of Montegiove has existed since the early 12th century and has in the last four centuries been the property of the Marchesi Misciattelli.

Today, still family-owned, it is the centre of an estate covering nearly 3000 acres of beautiful Umbrian countryside, where oak forests, vineyards, olive fields and arable land blend in total harmony with ancient dry walls and farmhouses built of local stone.

The principal products of the estate are wine, olive oil, cereals, oil seeds, Chianina beef cattle, forage and forest products. There is abundant wildlife such as boar and deer, and the local flora including truffles and mushrooms. The beautiful surroundings and unspoiled environment make it hard to believe that Montegiove is only 17 km from Italy's main motorway A1 (Milan - Naples), which also connects Rome and Florence.

During your stay in the Montegiove olive mill you will get the opportunity to be the Misciattelli family's private guest and get a guided tour in the winecellar, at the castle and the surrounding estate.

A very happy stay

Our family of 6 including 4 teenagers stayed in one of the three apartments in the grounds of the castle for a week in early August. Rikke could not have been more welcoming and helpful, and really made our stay very comfortable from start to finish. Getting a little tour of the castle and learning about its history and even sampling some of the wines were highlights towards the end of the week. The air conditioning was an absolute life saver, given how hot it was (>36 degrees every day and barely any cooler at night!). The pool is really lovely, a good size to actually swim as well as splash around. Do be prepared for mosquitoes / biting flies though!! We had clear skies during our week, and every night we were able to see lots of stars, as light pollution is very low in the location. Highly recommended.

Stunning!

My family and I (Kids aged 10 and 14) just spent a blissful 9 days at Montegiove. The location and property is simply stunning. The infinity pool overlooks the valley and woods and is so peaceful. We spent our days exploring local villages, and then returning to spend the afternoons in the pool at Montegiove. The host family were so friendly and welcoming and organised a wine tasting and truffle hunt for us as well as a private chef to prepare a birthday meal for us one night. The wine that is produced on the estate was delicious. The apartment was spotless, tastefully decorated and had everything we needed. I would wholeheartedly recommend this property. We are already talking about a return vist. It would also suit a larger family or friend group as you could take all 3 properties which sleep 6 + 5 +2. Thank you Rikke and Lorenzo for your hospitality. Nichola, Jason, Izzy and Jamie xxxx

Stunning!

Beautiful renovated Olive Mill in the most fantastic and special setting. There were six of us, the grandparents staying in the accessible main bedroom with ensuite off the kitchen and two adults and children in the upstairs 2 bedrooms with bathroom - very spacious and comfortable sitting / dining area. It was very well equipped including a very helpful folder full of advice and guidance from restaurants to walks and local places to visit. Rikke and Lorenzo were so hospitable providing guidance, and a wonderful tour of their amazing castle home and cellars where they produce their wonderful range of wine. The swimming pool, whilst a short walk around the castle ring wall was in the most beautiful setting and with a shower room, loo and changing room the short walk from the Olive Mill was very pleasant. Rikke kindly organised a cook to come and cater for 2 evening meals which meant we could enjoy the honesty box of wine and relax! The nearest reasonably sized supermarket is 20 minutes away in Fabro, so you need to stock up for supplies. There are wonderful restaurants and places to visit in the local area. We hired e-bikes which we thought were going to be a challenge for our two children (aged 9 and 13) and grandparents (81), but they were brilliant for 1-2 hour late afternoon rides to the hill-top village of Montegabbione for ice-creams and exploring local villages taking the hills with ease. An absolutely wonderful stay and I cannot thank Lorenzo and Rikke enough for their kindness and welcome.

Exceptional and memorable experience

There are not enough words to describe how wonderful our stay and experience were at Castello di Montegiove. Rikki and Lorenzo were the most fantastic hosts and humans who facilitated a once in a lifetime opportunity in their “home” and community. They were kind and extremely well-organized with everything one would need for a week-long stay in one of the most beautiful parts of Italy. This was our last week of a 5 week trip and it was by far the most memorable. The accommodations were so special, exceptionally clean, and highlighted the character of the castle all while offering modern amenities. The castle and property overall could not possibly have been more picturesque. Rikki and Lorenzo offered a fabulous tour of the castle and winery and we thoroughly enjoyed many bottles during our stay. Day tripping is a breeze to Rome, Florence, Perugia, and all the gems around and in between. Staying local and exploring on foot was just as lovely. The pool was a dream during the July heat but the cool breeze in the evening kept the rooms at a lovely temperature. Rikki set up a private chef for us to hire for each of our dinners and it was the most incredible experience - not only the exquisite and authentic food, teaching us so much about the Italian culture, but also getting to know and fall in love with our new friend, Giovanni. We were so sad to leave and will bend over backwards to return one day. Grazie Rikki, Lorenzo, e Giovanni!

Magical & Spectacular Place

The Montegiove Castle is a very special, magical and beautiful place. This is also greatly due to the hosts running it who are amazing and very special too. From our very first initial inquiry to booking this beautiful place until we said our goodbyes, the process was easy and pleasant. During our stay we were welcomed with a clean and a home ready to unpack our bags and settle in. The pool is just a beautiful walk around the castle and the view from the infinity pool is this never ending view of landscape, flowers and trees. Beautiful patio to eat outside which become our breakfast area. Since it was our first time in Italy and new to the area, Rikkie and Lorenzo were always available to make the best recommendations to places near by and areas that were a must see. Every restaurant and cities recommended were perfect. My husband and I are wine lovers and have to say, their wines are the best we’ve ever had. I took some of their wines home and they were kind enough to wrap them to ensure that they got home safe, which they did! We arrived the second week of June and stayed for a week. The weather was just perfect. The pictures you see does not give justice to what a beautiful ambience inside and out this place has to offer. The peace and the sounds of nature you get are simply priceless. We were able to coordinate a private chef for a couple nights and Giovanni is a magnificent cook. Our family of 4 have created a magnificent core memory that will last a life time ❤️

Remarkable stay in Umbrian castle

We friends stayed at Montegiove for a week in June ‘23. Rikki and her family were great hosts at this remote castle. The accommodations were updated, spacious, clean, and mostly comfortable. The kitchen was very modern and useable. The setting is spectacular, on top of a hill, surrounded by beautiful countryside. We wished there had been a better outside patio accessible to our unit. The patio for us was down 20 steps, around the corner and thus not really a place to just step outside and eat or gather. This is an old castle building, so windows are very small, and the view is enjoyable only if you are standing by the window. Not their fault…just the way it is. There is a pool, but it is quite a hike to the pool, so not easily accessible. We had imagined that being on top of a hill, our views from the unit and grounds would be amazing. They are, but you have to trek a ways to see them. We are all 80, so perhaps if you are younger and more eager to do steps the villa would be more suitable. Also, the castle is about 7 kilometers from the nearest town, but we enjoyed day trips to six or so other small towns 30-90 minutes away. They took us on a wonderful tour of the main castle and that included wine tasting, but unfortunately there were so many on the tour that it was difficult to hear and see. We admire the hosts for their efforts at Montegiove. Preserving a castle is quite a task. All in all, I would recommend.

Amazing Castle in Umbria!!

We just spent a week in this beautiful castle with our 2 adult children and their spouses. We stayed in the 3 bedroom unit which was very roomy and well equipped. Unfortunately with the cool, wet weather we had during the week, we were not able to make the most of the beautiful grounds and pool but can imagine it would be amazing during the warmer months. One of the highlights of our visit was the tour of the grounds and the wine cellar along with the tastings of the delicious wines. Our guide, Marta, was very informative providing us with a history of the castle and explanation of the wine making process. Most of all, we couldn’t ask for better hosts. Although Rikke was away during our visit, she was very responsive and helpful during the booking process and answering all my questions. Lorenzo looked after us upon arrival. He is very personable and was the ultimate host, responding promptly to any questions, providing recommendations, making reservations for us, etc.. Thank you, Rikke and Lorenzo, for sharing your beautiful castle with us! All the best for a great vintage year.

Secluded hideaway in Umbria

Our family of four adults and two children stayed comfortably for a week in the Moraiolo apartment. Rikke and Lorenzo were perfect hosts—they organized several dinners, a truffle hunt, a castle tour and wine tasting for our group, and provided helpful suggestions for nearby restaurants and attractions. We visited Orvieto, Civa Della Pieve, Castigliano del Lago, Castel de Fiori, Greppolischieto and a few small, charming villages around Montegiove. Highlights: dinners at Bruno Copetto and Locanda, the castle sunsets, and tasting the delicious wines of Montegiove. This property is very remote, so make sure you have transportation to visit the surrounding towns. Thank you, Rikke and Lorenzo for an unforgettable stay!

Easter/Pasqua in Montegiove!

Castello de Montegiove is simply enchanting and both Rikke and Lorenzo are exceptional hosts. We spent six nights in Il Moraiolo (3 bedroom unit) and had everything we could possibly need, including our own private garden area for outdoor grilling and al fresco dining. We had planned on arriving by 5pm, but Easter holiday traffic was so horrible that we didn't arrive until 4 hours later. I texted Rikke to let her know that we would be arriving much later than expected, worried that our late arrival would create a problem. Not only did Rikke reassure us that we should not worry, she went above and beyond by running to the market to make sure that we would have coffee and breakfast items for the next morning, saving us this late night trip. Montegiovi is a remote and quiet spot for relaxing, country walks, learning about the history of Castello de Montegiove and enjoying the wines it produces. It is also perfectly situated for many great day trip options. Six days was just not enough for us and we hope for the good fortune of returning again in the future. Thank you Rikke and Lorenzo!

Perfection in the green hills of Umbria

It's tough for a perfectionist to actually say that something was perfect - however, when you see it you know it. And "perfect" is what I'd say about the time my friend and I spent in Montegiove. The setting, the house, the amenities, the breezes, and the view all contributed, but it was the graciousness of our host and hostess that made the perfection complete. Rikke and Lorenzo know just how to be attentive and concerned with every comfort while never being intrusive. Every question was answered, every request was gently addressed and, more, we were shown the sort of courtesy and kindness that only true hosts extend to their guests. All of this assured our relaxation and made for the perfect vacation. Molte grazie. We are eager to return and stay longer. Sam and Janet - June 2012

Ideally situated castle with a rehabilitated stone olive mill

We and another couple stayed in the olive mill at Castello Montegiove for a week, and used it as our travel base for exploring nearby Tuscany and Umbria. The apartment is spacious and comfortable with a lovely private garden, and the setting at the top of a small hill town is a wonderful thing to come home to after each day of exploration. Easy day trips are Orvieto, Siena, Montepulciano, Cortona, Assisi, Spello, Castiglione del Lago (and Panicale on the way), and one must not miss La Scarzuola, which is almost within walking distance. We used the kitchen extensively for breakfasts and late dinners (often eating our main meal as lunch while out and about). We loved the tour of the castle: the wine making cellar (cantina) and its first-rate operation, museum quality rooms and furninshings, ancestral portaits, rediscovered ancient frescoes, the library, special decorative pottery stoves that were invented by an ancestor, the chapel dedicated to its own Beata who lived there and started an order of nuns that exists to this day, a stunning stone spiral stairway, and the WWII cannon that the Germans abandoned during their retreat. The tour of the vineyards was incredibly informative about the technical issues and process of growing and tending the vines. We met the herd of curious and friendly Chiannina cattle who came up to us when we entered the pasture with the owner who is a trained agronomist with a specialty in animal husbandry, and has joined in the effort to bring back this most ancient (Etruscan) breed of cattle, which nearly became extinct. Staying in the olive mill brought us the best of Umbrian and Tuscan countryside while being within reach of so many wonderful hill towns. We highly recommend it for either a quiet retreat, or a comfortable home base for touring.

On a clear day, you can see forever

Castello Montegiove is an easy trip on the Autostrada from Rome, and a perfect center for day trips to Perugia, Assisi, Todi, Deruta, and Orvieto. It is also the gateway to walking and exploring the hills, streams, fields and quiet roads of Umbria. There is much to do in all seasons. Nearby --- you can actually see the buildings from the Castle’s parapets --- is la Scarzuola. This ancient monastery, on the site where Saint Francis lived in poverty, had been abandoned by the Franciscan brothers. In the mid-twentieth century, it was purchased by an Italian architect who built his “perfect city” on the grounds. He intended the fanciful city to be a center for the arts. A visit to la Scarzuola is really a walk into the sacred and the profane. Mass is still held in the chapel of the monastery. Lorenzo or Rikke can make arrangements for a tour ---an absolute must! Touring la Scarzuola, unmentioned in most guide books, was one of the high points of our month in Italy. It is unlike anything else in the world. If you are planning a visit to Umbria, I would book one of the apartments at Castello Montegiove now --- today. We loved it so much that we extended our stay! We plan to return.

Fairy tale in Umbria

Castello Montegiove is a fairy tale come true. Just below the Castle’s wall, the olive mill, with its pair of grand, two story apartments, invites you to be part of the enchantment. Umbria is beautiful; the hill towns captivating and the cities renowned and interesting. But those are only some of the reasons you should book this property as soon as possible. This is an extremely comfortable one-of-a-kind family retreat. It is equally perfect for a couple’s getaway. In each of the spacious olive mill apartments, where once farm laborers produced rich olive oil, today guests can enjoy modern, luxurious and comfortable lodgings. The pictures on the website do not do the apartments justice. They are magnificent. Imagine high speed internet access in the thirteenth century stone vaulted living room. Everything is tastefully decorated and carefully appointed. The huge barrel ceilinged kitchen and dining area is equipped with top quality equipment, china and glassware, as well as a dishwasher. The glorious kitchen speaks to the chef in each of us and encourages meals that take advantage of Umbria’s culinary specialties and complement both the wines of the Castle and the surrounding regions. Somehow Puccini seems to be the appropriate theme song. What makes this so special are the young owners and their generous hospitality. The master and mistress of the Castle, Lorenzo and Rikke, were thoughtful and welcoming in so many ways – from the awaiting food basket and the accompanying bottle of Castle Montegiove wine and tin of olive oil to knowledgeable suggestions on what to see and where to visit. Lorenzo, a PhD agronomist, inherited the Castle and its many acres. He and Rikke, a gifted and talented clothing designer, are working to bring new life to the Castle and its land. The vineyards and winery are in production again. The groves of olive trees are fruiting and producing oil. Cattle, a breed that dates back to the Romans, have returned to the Castle’s pastures. If the Misciatellis have time in their busy schedule, you might even be privileged to tour the Castle, their home, to learn about Lorenzo’s family, see the frescoes discovered beneath layers of paint and hear tales about the Castle’s history. Trust me. If you want to make a memory, stay at Castello Montegiove.

Wonderful Place to Stay

The owners make you feel so welcome here, and are very accomodating. The house was clean, very well stocked, and comfortable. We loved hearing the bells ring from the town below, and the views were spectacular! Being close to the border of both Tuscany and Umbria made it easy to make day trips to the various regions and return to the peacefulness of the castle in the evenings. We can't wait to come back to visit!
