About this property

Romantic Tropical Hideaway - Birds & Bees Cottage

Birds & Bees Cottage, as the name implies is a romantic stone cottage with shingle roof trimmed with white gingerbread. It has a king sized 4 poster bed draped in netting, antique furniture, a huge 30' x 8' verandah with a hammock for those afternoon naps. Lovely views across the tropical garden filled with an assortment of flowers and trees with many birds flitting through. There is a palm fringed pool shared with Sapodilla cottage also in the 2 acre garden. Both cottages are very private and peaceful and well separated from each other. I ask a minimum of 5 nights.

The perfect stay

Everything about this property and the hosts were a delight. A beautiful haven amongst the natural world. Comfortable and tranquil with everything we needed. We loved being visited by the resident dogs, all with their own super characteristics. Janie and Geoffrey are such wonderful and interesting people and could not have been more helpful to us. Thank you for our stay.

Welcoming and open

All the people we met on site were very welcoming and there was a very good welcome pack. The grounds and pool area are lovely The fact that the doors and windows were always open for the breeze it felt a little insecure leaving out valuables there when we went out and similarly at night as the gates never seem to be locked

Careful what you wish for.

I would just like to point out that obvious-That ALL of the local wildlife will be sharing the space with you! This is includes lizards, birds, moths, spiders and mosquitoes. Please look up the fauna of Antigua! If this is your thing your stay will be amazing and you will want for nothing ie toiletries, cleaning/cooking products etc. If you're hiring a car then a 4x4 is a must!

Happy memories

Our time in Antigua will be reflected fondly start to finish with our stay at the guest apartment, we refer to as the tree house. Jami and Geoff have clearly worked hard to create… The rustic charm, peaceful atmosphere and the homely welcome. The pleasure really was ours.. James and Joy

Off Season Stay

Fabulous stay at The Birds & Bees cottage last week. Lovely quiet spot with super views from the pool down to Falmouth and English Harbour. Janie was a lovely host - nothing too much trouble and plenty ideas for beaches and hikes. We found the island to be very quiet in October with beaches to ourselves - particularly in the mornings. Recommend the 40 minute hike from the front door up and down to Rendezvous Bay. Sone restaurants closed but the majority open for lunch and happy to accept walk-ins - a favourite of ours was lunch at Boom (opposite Nelson’s Dockyard) and a chill-out on the poolside beds afterwards. We enjoyed the company of the friendly dogs, as well as the humming birds and yellow finches. Only a few sharp showers but otherwise weather was perfect. Accommodation very comfortable and lots of space for the two of us. We’ll be back hopefully soon!

Unique Antiguan Experience

We loved this place, its so fresh and different. It would not be every ones cup of tea but it was certainly ours. The property is so tranquil and full of nature, we loved sitting on the huge veranda and watch the bananaquits and humming birds feed, a couple of birds use to fly through the cottage, so hide the bread!. The cottage is beautifully designed and furnished, really clean and well equipped. The pool and surrounding gardens are a delight. The view from the pool terrace is breath taking. Virginia is a brilliant host, and just wants you to enjoy her corner of Antiguan heaven. The welcome pack was very much appreciated too.

Perfect vacation

Janie and Geoffrey are great hosts and their property is amazing. We enjoyed the very open aspect of the cottage and the regular visits from the birds and Janie's three dogs. The location is ideal for trips into Falmouth and English Harbours, where there is a wide selection of restaurants. It was a very restful ans relaxing stay and one we would love to repeat.

Paradise

If you’re looking for total peace and to get away from it all Birds and Bees will tick all the boxes. Janie is there if you need her but also leaves you to it if you want. The views are wonderful, watching the birds on the veranda in the morning with our coffee was a lovely ritual and of course looking out to sea. The cottage is well equipped and cleaned regularly. The dogs were welcomed by us regularly but you have the option not to allow them in. I celebrated my birthday at the Pillars, Admirals Inn at Nelson dock which had wonderful views and staff lovely and good good. Also tried the Caribbean fare at Sandra’s fusion restaurant. Driving was easy and we visited many of the beaches , Pigeon bay was our favourite which had Bumpkins and Catherine’s to get food and drink in at lunch time. Supermarket where we’ll stock but don’t expect Sainsburys standards, all good organic I believe. We definitely recommend Birrds and Bees and the lovely, elegant Janie Go Go Go!!!!

Fabulous and Chilled out break

Fabulous cottage and location in close proximity to both Falmouth and English Harbour. Janie and Geoffrey were very gracious hosts throughout my stay and were close by if there were queries but also left you to explore on your own. I appreciated the opportunity to drop my bags with my earlier than planned arrival due to the very early BA flight and efficient COVID process at the airport. The cottage and garden is as described and the pictures don't do it justice and its a toss up whether sitting on the deck watching the hummingbirds or lounging by the pool admiring the view was the favourite activity of the afternoon. If you're a bit homesick for your dogs, their dogs are always happy to greet you with their doggy smiles and I loved the cuddles and check in's from them. There's the option to use the small gates if you're not a dog fan, but I never once used them as loved getting their visits. Location wise the cottage is in a great spot as only 10 - 15 mins away from Falmouth and English Harbour with its shops and restaurants. Overall a fabulous stay and I'll definitely be back.

Deserves 6 Stars !!

We arrived at a very difficult time for the world Covid -19 was making life increasingly difficult for all. Our greeting from Janie and Geoffrey made us feel relieved and safe it is a beautiful homely cottage everything felt so right. The wildlife surrounding the cottage is amazing the birds kept us amused some of them are such characters.!! We love dogs and adored Janies dogs visiting us. The cottage is very clean with absolutely everything you would need for your visit plus more. We found the mobile left for local calls most thoughtful and did need to use it when ringing the hire car company. As all other reviews have stated it is the perfect place to stay, and will definitely be going back especially as we had to cut our stay short to take the last plane out of Antigua to the UK. Janie and Geoffrey are the absolute perfect hosts. May you both stay safe from the virus Take care

Caribbean Perfection

No one should ask for more of you are looking for the perfect intimate private rental Antiguan accommodation experience. Birds and Bees Cottage has all you need in a delightful mix of old Caribbean architecture and New England decor. Every modern facility is available in a property which is more spacious than some of the booking site photos suggest. The arched windows and verandah doors opened up in the daytime ensure delightful trade wind breezes refresh the house continuously - air con is irrelevant. As ever in Antigua outside living on the verandah is the norm and the verandah in B&B Cottage is the place with its views over the wonderful garden towards magnificent Falmouth Harbour. The bird feeder nearby ensures the regular arrival of the most beautiful Hummingbirds within feet of you as well as other species. The private pool while only a few steps away is large and in a superb setting and has a wonderful gazebo to shelter from the sun when required. We have been to Antigua many times in the last 10 years and sampled a variety of excellent rental and hotel accommodation and this place is at the top for us. It’s far enough away from the main activity areas in Falmouth and English harbours to feel quiet and secluded but not in reality when you need to go shopping for provisions nearby or access the restaurants, bars and fabulous beaches but a short distance away. Cloggys our favourite sports bar and restaurant nestling in the Yacht Club Marina is a must for anyone visiting. Our favourite beach anywhere is Rendezvous Bay but a mile away on the road from the Cottage. Who could ask for more? But make sure you rent a 4x4 to get easily to these remoter spots. Janie and Geoffrey were delightful hosts and a pleasure to meet. Nothing was too difficult albeit we needed little other than was already in place. If you are a twosome and need both a retreat but also the convenience of one of the best holiday locations on Antigua... we heartily recommend Birds and Bees Cottage - Amazing Value.

Thoroughly recommended.

We stayed at Springhill (Birds & Bees) for two weeks and totally loved our holiday. The venue is truly unique, spotlessly clean and has all the facilities you could need for a tropical break. The gorgeous cottage sits within the grounds of the owners property in a beautifully kept garden. Whilst the owners property is quite near, the lush vegetation and positioning ensures complete privacy. Having said that the owners are delightful and couldn’t be more helpful in pointing you in the right direction for the right beach or restaurant and for insights into island life. The property is in a great location at the south of the island near to Falmouth and English Harbour so it’s close to lots of facilities such as restaurants, beaches and places of interest. A car is essential but the owners of the villa are very helpful at providing good local car hire company names. Plus having a car means that you actually get out and about to see the real island rather than being closed up behind the gates of an exclusive hotel. Our typical day involved breakfast on the veranda with the humming birds and friendly lizard followed by a visit to the beach (normally pigeon point beach), lunch at the beach, late afternoon by the pool and an evening dinner either at the villa or at a local restaurant. There are four friendly dogs that pop by for regular visits and quickly become part of the family (only if you want them to - we did)! We felt very sad to leave and would definitely like to be back! A gem!

We just loved the cottage and the veranda, the garden, the pool, the wildlife - everything was perfect. It was wonderful to leave everything open, even at night, to allow a gentle breeze to blow through the cottage. We were so relaxed, just reading books, watching the birds and letting time slip by. The kitchen is very well equipped so we cooked in most days, eating on the veranda whilst being watched intently by both dogs and birds! Just our sort of cottage.

What Holidays should always be!

An enchanting environment, views to die and air conditioning supplied by the breeze. If you can drag yourself away from the refreshing pool all the facilities of Falmouth and English Harbours are nearby and many of the islands best beaches within 30 minutes drive. Not for 5 star 'all inclusives' but an authentic Caribbean experience with comfortable bedroom, adequate facilities and a living area opening onto a generous veranda where you can be fascinated by the antics of some very precocious birds.

Delightful, romantic cottage in a lush tropical garden, with glimpses of the harbour.

Janie and Geoffrey are considerate hosts who made us feel very much at home. We appreciated the welcome pack and the vase of bougainvillea on the table. Thoughtful touches included a jar of homemade marmalade, and a local "pay as you go" mobile phone. The cottage is charming, especially the veranda which has wonderful views of the lush garden and glimpses of the Harbour beyond. Living up to the name, we were entertained by numerous birds, but no bees! We loved our visits from the four dogs, especially Ingigo who has great charm. Thanks to the breeze we found the cottage to be cool, despite having no AC. The kitchen is well equipped and a small BBQ is provided. We enjoyed using the pool and when the sun became too hot, sitting in the shade under the gazebo looking out at the view. The cottage is very well situated and there is a great deal to do around the area. We were in Antigua for the wedding of friends who live in Falmouth, so much of our time was involved with that event. However, it was wonderful to be able to retire to this oasis for rest and relaxation.

Long stay paradise: enjoy the life!

I needed a quiet and relaxed place to write a book - and I found it! This is perfect for a long stay, out-of-season - when the island is quieter and you can really enjoy the beauty of the place and the friendliness of the people. So the weather is less predictable and some restaurants are closed - but it is well worth it in terms of all the benefits of a slower pace and no crowds (wonderfully empty beaches!). The cottage is great for long term occupation - good for working inside or on the veranda (to the sounds of birds and the wonderful vista of tropical gardens and sea) and it was a pleasure to self-cater. I liked the local shop (fresh local veg and keep an eye open for when fresh fish comes in - and try their ginger beer! - but also ask Janie about the local fruit and veg stall) and found much greater range of food available than I had expected. In hosts Janie and Geoffrey you have all the expertise and knowledge of the island you could wish for - as well as the most sympathetic and welcoming of hpsts that I could have asked for. Do take time to ride at the stables (Spring Hill) just below the house - and otherwise, enjoy! I spent one month here and it was not long enough!!! Thank you to everyone: especially Janie and Geoffrey. I look forward to a longer stay in the future!.

Tranquility in Paradise.

This is a marvellously secluded and peaceful cottage within easy reach of shops and amenities, set in a beautiful garden with a wonderful view of Falmouth Harbour. Short stroll up through the garden to the pool, which is ideal for a dip at any time of day, or do as we did and spend many days soaking up the sun and cooling in the pool!! Birds and Bees cottage is situated a short distance off the main road, on a side road, which leads to Rendezvous Bay. Car hire is strongly recommended; 4 wheel drive is not necessary for access to the cottage any part of the island, except Rendezvous Bay, which is about 15/20 minutes drive, or 45 to 60 minutes walk from the cottage. The garden is full of beautiful flowering bushes and cacti, which attract a splendid variety of colourful birds which do fly in and out and through the cottage. Hurricane Gonzalo passed over us while we were resident, which was an interesting experience and due to Birds and Bees cottage sheltered location and stout construction we suffered no ill effects whatsoever. Mains electricity was knocked out for 4 days, but as the property has it’s own independent and automatic on/off generator we experienced no loss of power. Wonderful hosts Janie and Geoffrey live in the house next door so available if required and having lived on the island for over 40 years are a true fount of knowledge and just want to ensure guests really do enjoy their stay at Birds and Bees cottage.

Perfect romantic hideaway

A truly perfect piece of Eden, complete with tropical birds, a gorgeous vista, gentle breeze, cool pool, cool BBQ and genial hosts - authentic in every way. We couldn't wait to return to the cottage after idyllic days on pirate beaches to enjoy lazy evenings lounging on the terrace. This is a gem that we couldn't recommend highly enough. Thank you Janie and Geoffrey - we so hope to come back soon.

Amazing stay and hosts at Birds & Bees Cottage!

What a fantastic holiday!! The cottage is absolutely stunning, we enjoyed thoroughly every single moment spent in there. The fact that the shutters are open 24/7 gives you a rare opportunity to live 'outside' whilst still being in the house and compared to the expensive resorts some of our friends stayed at the same time, we would by no way change the experience we had! The owners Janie and Geoffrey are the kindest and friendliest hosts you can find and it felt like we were really welcomed and even on the day of the departure when the new guests arrived, we were welcomed to feel home in their guest room downstairs. The view from the cottages are worth $$$$$ and being close to English Harbour, Shirley Heights, the beautiful Pigeon Beach and only a 10 min drive to some other beaches makes it a perfect location. The garden like a botanical park where you can see some real rare gems, the frangipani flower right under our bedroom window was so beautiful and being able to make my own orange juice from the oranges growing at your doorstep is something no luxury resort is able to offer. Although we were warned about the mosquitos during night time, we had absolutely no experience with them whatsoever and sleeping under the nets will guarantee you wont be bitten. This cottage was the reason we decided to go to Antigua and is definitely the reason we will be going back!

Host profile image
I sailed into English Harbour in 1967 and fell in love with the island. I built my house in 1969 in the old colonial style, and later built a cottage for my mother, and much later a small guest cottage. Unfortunately my husband and I lost our pensions to a very bad investment, and now I am renting out both cottages. My husband and I are both keen sailors, riders (I started the Springhill Riding Club just nearby in 1987) We love our three dogs and our 2 acre garden which we have filled with indigenous flowering plants and trees.

Why they chose this property

We love Falmouth for its peaceful green location, it feels a long way from everywhere, but is only 5 minutes drive to lots of activities and night life - the best of both worlds.

At Spring Hill we have welcomed many guests who have enjoyed the rural life and tasteful open plan Caribbean Georgian style cottages set in lush tropical gardens overlooking the many beautiful yachts at anchor. These cottages are a short drive or hike to the many amenities of the Nelson’s Dockyard World Heritage historic site.

Spring Hill is set on a two acres site with very few neighbours. It is on the rural road to Rendezvous Bay Beach, arguably one of the best of Antigua’s 365. Access to this beach is best by foot, a 30 minutes hike, or by 4 wheel dive, visitors usually have the beach to themselves, alternatively a hack can by organised by the Antigua Equestrian Centre just a few minutes walk down the hill - swimming on the horses can be arranged as well.

We at Spring Hill live with open windows and doors. We are blessed by the ever present trade winds. Our home and three cottages capture these cooling winds. There are no screens, security bars nor is air conditioning necessary. There is no television. There is however Wi Fi and Internet access.

The Spring Hill 2 acre property is securely fenced to keep our 4 dogs inside and the roaming goats, sheep and cattle out. Our dogs, Ottalie, Bella, Ebony and Bandit provide pleasure to ourselves & our guests. The generous verandas used often for dining and relaxing, all have the option to exclude our K9 friends. Most of our guests however keep their homes open and welcome the visits for these precious tail wagging “Guard” dogs that provide companionship and the Security for Spring Hill.

Residential Tourism represented by properties such as Spring Hill, represent an alternative and a get away from the maddening crowds of hotels. Please read the reviews from our many happy guests. Many of whom return for repeat visits.

What makes this property unique

Birds & Bees (we have had several engagements happen here!) is peaceful and quiet and yet near so many lively bars, restaurants, etc. There is a Mediterranean port feeling to the Yacht Club Marina with its coffee bars & boutiques and mega yachts, and yet it is only a few minutes away! You can spend the day by the pool, swinging in a hammock or at the beach, and at night enjoy a delicious dinner and dancing under the stars in one of the many restaurants in the Harbour.
