About this property

Traditional thatched cottage near the sea: log burner, paddock

Bridge Cottage is one of a handful of traditional thatched cottages left in Donegal. It dates back over two hundred years and is situated in a quiet rural location near the sea, just five minutes' drive from Ireland's 'Wild Atlantic Way'. This beautiful cottage has been carefully restored with many of its original features intact. The relaxed and peaceful atmosphere of a cosy log-burning stove, wooden ceiling and stone tiled floor -with warm rugs in the living areas - is combined with all modern comforts including a strong WIFI connection.

2024 AVAILABILITY (Updated AUGUST 2024)
The cottage is still free for the following nights:
2nd - 5th September
16th - 22nd September
There is also good availability from 6th October. Please ask.

Dogs welcome - STRICTLY BY ARRANGEMENT ONLY - Please ask.
Plenty of outside space. Dogs are not allowed on the sofa or beds.

The fully equipped separate kitchen has an extra large cooker to cater for a family. There are two bedrooms with comfortable beds, colourful bedspreads and wooden furniture; the second bedroom has an adjoining washroom and toilet.

The first bedroom has a double bed and the other bedroom has two single beds. There is also a substantial folding bed (suitable for a child.) This folding bed will fit in the double bedroom. In addition, there is a travel cot for a baby or toddler. In the living area, there is an additional booster seat for a small child to sit at the table.

To the rear of the cottage is a large relaxing sun terrace equipped with outdoor furniture, with lovely views of blossom in spring and of sheep grazing on the hillside beyond. This terrace and the rear of the cottage are completely private. Adjoining the terrace is a large, enclosed paddock belonging to the cottage. It is bordered by a stream, whose calming sounds add to the relaxing ambience.

There is private parking for several cars in a gated area.

The cottage is located on a quiet country road. The area surrounding it offers beautiful landscapes of lochs and glens and it is a very short drive to experience stunning seascapes - this is an ideal location to discover both mountains and sea. The coastline offers miles of stunning white beaches, rugged cliff tops and sheltered coves - all within easy reach. The lighthouse at St John's Point lies at the end of a wild and scenic peninsula just to the south of Bridge Cottage and provides a fantastic walk, drive or cycle ride. The highest cliffs in Europe at Slieve League and the beautiful Blue Stack Mountains are also easily accessible.

The cottage is not remote - the village of Dunkineely with its village shops and cosy pubs offering traditional music is 5 minutes' drive away. A little further afield, the colourful town of Donegal can be reached in 20 minutes. Killybegs, the largest fishing port in Ireland, is also just 15 minutes from the cottage.

Inland, the countryside is wild and unspoilt with quiet roads winding past vistas of mountains, lakes and waterfalls. The famous Glenveagh National Park is within driving distance, offering wonderful walking, lochs, hills and forests. Nearby Ardara is a centre for the traditional craft of weaving and offers many opportunities to buy Donegal tweed and woolens.

This part of south west Donegal is steeped in cultural history. For instance, in Glencolmcille, there is a fascinating Folklore Museum where visitors can experience local life in a collection of thatched cottages dating through the centuries. In Donegal town, there is a fascinating castle and the Railway Heritage Centre gives information on its history through photographic displays, guides to the old routes and treasured railway memorabilia.

Local activities include horse-riding, sea fishing, hiking and boat trips. Those interested in history will also enjoy the Heritage Centre in Killybegs with its interesting insights into fishing and carpet making in the area over the years. There is a demonstration on the hand-knotting loom and the largest loom of its kind in the world is on display here.

Inside the cottage, you will find a pack of information about the local area as well as local walking maps, guides and books. The Visitor's Book is full of helpful suggestions for excursions, walks, activities and places to eat and shop. Wherever you go, you will be met by friendly locals who always have time for a chat - life is unhurried and uncomplicated in this part of Ireland. Staying in a traditional thatched cottage is a unique experience and, at Bridge Cottage, it is easy to become immersed in a timeless way of life amidst beautiful, unspoilt and peaceful surroundings.

There are sometimes a couple of Donegal sheep in the paddock but they can be moved if necessary!

DISCOUNTS FOR STAYS OF 7 NIGHTS OR MORE
Three nights minimum in summer months unless the cottage shows availability for two nights.
Seven night stays from Saturday to Saturday preferred in July and August unless the calendar shows availability less .
Charge of 5 euros per large bag for removal of rubbish.

A little piece of heaven

Great things can come in small sizes! So comfortable, well maintained, the kitchen had absolutely everything, the lounge was so cosy, the bed was the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in! Will be visiting again.

Charming cozy cottage in a great location

We really enjoyed our stay - the cottage is well equipped and furnished very much in keeping with the style of the house with warm colours and traditional furnishings. Great location with countryside peace and quiet but close enough to beaches and to the fantastic wild Atlantic way coastline. Highly recommended

Donegal in December

We had another brilliant week in the cottage and managed lots of fantastic beach walks. While storms rattled on the windows on a couple of occasions we were warm and safe inside. Great to have the paddock for the dog - a real bonus.

A Bit Disappointed

The cottage was as pictured outside. Upon opening the door a musty damp smell and cold. Night storage heaters do not warm up until the next night. Our first night was extremely cold as temperature had dropped. “Towels” we do not think that 1 towel each over 4 nights is adequate and towels marked to start with. On entering the property we saw the presence of a spirit a black haired lady lying on the bed of single bed room momentarily. One last thing shower pressure very poor. Disappointed having to pay for rubbish clearance as on holiday and not had to do this before in 4 other cottages. Out of 5 properties we have stayed over 16 days this is the only one we have had to write a negative review for.Very disappointed as this was our 4 night stay the longest.

Quiet and cosy cottage close to fabulous beaches

Staying in a traditional thatched cottage with a log burner in December was exactly what we needed to re-kindle our love of Ireland after being away for 3 years due to COVID and then Brexit.

Wonderful few days in Bridge Cottage

Visiting in November we found this to be a very cozy thatched cottage, perfectly situated for exploring the local coastline. Sue has left really useful information about places to visit and places to eat. The beds were comfy, kitchen well kitted out and we enjoyed the warmth of the woodburning stove in the evenings.

Autumn at the cottage

Bridge Cottage is an ideal Irish cottage stay and in a great location, we liked it especially at this time of the year - autumn colours and cool walking weather. The only downside was there was no live music in the Dunkineely pubs. That is a summer season thing. But we walked in St John's Point, Slive Liag and Maghera Beach and came back to a cosy cottage afterwards. Lovely.

An idyllic weekend

We spent a lovely weekend here. Peace and quiet and a chance to explore the surrounding countryside. Sue has thought of everything for home comforts. Would love to stay again only perhaps the summertime. Good communications with proprioter and detailed instructions to get there. Very cold time of year to stay with a little snow which added to the charm of the cottage. Will be back someday I hope 👍😊👌❤️♥️❤️❤️

Wonderful week in cosy Bridge cottage.

Many thanks for a wonderful week in the very cosy and comfortable Bridge Cottage. Fantastic base from which to explore this beautiful part of Donegal. The cottage is colourful and full of character-a real home away from home. The beaches nearby are simply stunning - especially Maghera! And to top it off Dolly the sheep welcomed us home in hilarious style each evening!

First time in a thatched cottage

The cottage was cosy once we had warmed up but this took a while as the weather was very cold and wet and no heating was on . I would suggest that having the house warm for new arrivals is important. We knew how to use the stove but perhaps others would not and anyway this was not sufficient to warm the cottage. Perhaps slightly too many caveats and instructions about electricity useage etc but perhaps some visitors need this . We enjoyed our drives in spite of the atrocious weather and really loved going to 2 local pubs - Macs and Macintyre to hear gossip and stories (craic) and listen to musicians singing and playing traditional Irish music- a great evening entertainment! The photo of the cottage on the site is slightly misleading as it is taken from the back of the property making it hard to recognize from the road. In summary the cottage has a lot of character and great to visit as long as the weather is kind

Wonderful and fun

We had our best two days of the holiday at the cottage. It was absolutely delightful. Cosy and warm, comfortable and well equipped, it was the perfect place to stay. Even the internet worked really well, which is unusual in holiday lets in remote areas. Dolly the sheep was glorious, and we loved having chats with her over the fence; I've never known such a friendly sheep. She wants to be human. Ann, who looks after the house, was very friendly and responded immediately when we needed help. Sue answered the phone immediately when we called and was very helpful. A highlight of the trip was when Tommy, who fixes things when they go wrong, came round. He's hilarious, and we could have sat listening to him telling his stories all night. The cottage is handy for shops and beaches, and I plan to go again and again. Idyllic and great fun.

Beautiful cottage with everything you need

Sue is an excellent host, we stayed for 2 nights which were very enjoyable and a great base to explore the rugged landscapes and beaches nearby. The best part is that we were able to bring the dog, who absolutely loved running free on fintra beach (gorgeous place and just a 15 min drive away). A friendly little sheep lives on the field directly behind the cottage and loves to get your attention and to be petted :) Log burning stove was wonderful and cosy as the storm came in on Friday night. We ate out in Olde castle bar in donegal Town which was dog friendly and does a great fish pie. Would definitely return again. A*

Quiet and cosy

Looked ancient from the outside but had all modern conveniences inside.Lovely fire in living room.Comfy beds in bedroom. Ideally located to explore this area of Donegal. I recommend boat trip under the cliffs. Very dog friendly house with good enclosed area. Cafes and restaurants also allowed our little dog to sit with us outside. The owner Sue is a lovely lady to speak with. The only suggestion I would make is in regard to payment. I feel that guests should be given a choice of payment in sterling or euro.

Gorgeuos Cottage well equipped

We had a fantasitic time at Bridge Cottage! We were more than pleased that our two dogs were welcome. The contact to Mrs Attwood was very uncomplicated and nice. You will find everything you need to feel comfortable in this lovely cottage- the kitchen provides everthing you need for cooking and even baking is possible ( made the first scones in my life there ;) ) , the bed was comfy , bathroom small but appropriate and pretty, the sittingroom is cosily , especially when the fire is lit... I love the hoover ;). I even accompanied my Boyfriend with one of the bikes when he went running , so the bikes work and if not - there is enough stuff to get them going...It´s not far to a small shop where you can get most things you need. For us it was a perfect spot from where we dicovered Donegal and felt like coming home in the evening ! We hopefully come back some time

Bridge Cottage

We returned for a second visit to Bridge Cottage. We find the Cottage to be relaxed and comfortable. We like visiting the beaches nearby which are beautiful for walks. Donegal town is not too far away for an evening meal.Mostly we ate in after a day out in the fresh air .It was still chilly so we lit the wood burning stove and relaxed over dinner and a glass of wine.

Beautiful traditional Bridge Cottage Dunkineely

This beautiful traditional cottage is attractively furnished, warm and cosy with everything provided. It was easy to find thanks to Sue's directions and everything was as described, clean and well maintained. The quiet location is close to all amenities, beautiful scenery, the sea and the mountains. In spite of the adverse weather, my daughter and I managed to get out and about almost every day visiting all the surrounding beauty spots such as St. John's Point, Slieve League, Errigal and Donegal Town. As we are exploring Family Reseach, the relatively near records offices in Letterkenny and Lifford proved very helpful. We chose this cottage as a quiet place to continue our studies in the evenings and it was perfect! I would definitely recommend this property to everyone...and it is very likely that I will go back to it. Customer service and owner contact was excellent.

Everything you need and more

The cottage is in a great location for exploring Donegal whlie enoying all the comforts of home. It is both cosy and well-equipped with everything you could possibly need for a great holiday. The information provided in the visitors’ folder was really useful and we thoroughly recommend giving it a good read when you first arrive – we didn’t realise until later in our stay that we could have had fuel delivered to the door. The storage heaters were adequate in June and we didn’t need the fire much although we lit it every night just for ambience. Having explored other parts of Donegal during our stay, we would say that this is one of the best areas to stay in. The local pubs in Dunkineely were really friendly and one has a couple of live Irish music sessions every week. There are decent food shopping options in the local shops (mostly at petrol stations) or a bigger supermarket in Killybegs. We had great food at Nancy’s Bar in Ardara and at Kitty Kelly’s which was on the road from Dunkineely to Killybegs. There are great recommendations for beaches, sights, pubs and music nights in the vistors’ folder and the maps in the cottage were invaluable as the local road signs were not very forthcoming. Would definitely recommend the cottage and don’t miss the stunning cliffs of Slieve League.

Beautiful cottage in a peaceful setting

We have had a great time at bridge cottage. It is very comfortable and set in beautiful and peaceful surroundings in Donegal. My dogs, two little Dachshunds who are my pride and joy were able to come with us for their first ever holiday. They have really enjoyed themselves. We were able to have days at the beach with them and back at the cottage they loved exploring the paddock! I would really reccomend this cottage if you are looking to get away from it all for a bit. Lovely.

I bought the cottage 18 years ago whilst holidaying in the area. I love spending time there and sharing this special place with others. Part of the fun is making the cottage and its garden as inviting as possible - and always finding new places to explore in this lovely corner of Donegal.

The beautiful views from the terrace
The peaceful location - yet still close to Dunkineely village, several pubs, Donegal Town, Killybegs and Ardara.
