About this property

Escape to a cliff top location superb sea views. No traffic noise. Pets welcome

Clovercliff is a gem of a cottage that overlooks the sea and some of the most spectacular coastline in the 'Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' if not the British Isles. Perched two hundred feet above and within three hundred yards of the coast of the Bristol Channel, it can be found in Google Earth at 51 deg. 33’ 34.23”N and 4 deg. 16’ 24.24”W. Whether you like walking, painting, bird watching, surfing, climbing, paragliding, or want a great location for a family holiday this is an outstanding place within 10 minutes walk of Mewslade Bay. It is also within a mile and a half of Rhossili which boasts three miles of sandy beach. For peace, quiet and somewhere to relax and watch the changes in light and weather, it often seems unbeatable. Many spectacular walks can be taken directly from the cottage along the coast or over Rhossili Down. Other natural and historic wonders of The Gower are within easy reach by car or bike. You could also venture further to Swansea with its shops, or to the National Botanic Garden of Wales, or the historic castles of Kidwelly, Weobley and Penrice.

Perfect respite for hard working Guide Dogs.......and their staff :-)

Oh my goodness, what a find, what a gem of a place! We wanted cosy isolation with stunning views, and walks for the dogs on our doorstep and the cottage did not disappoint. We had good days walking, with breath taking views at every turn, spaces for the dogs to run free and be regular dogs, and hang up their super hero Guide Dog capes. The gardens were fenced in (but doesn't impede the view from inside)and they loved being able to run right around the property and play chase! The cottage is very thoughtfully kitted out, with minute attention to detail. The bed was so comfy, and the evenings by the roaring fire capped off wonderful days. One word of caution....if like the rest of my family you need maxed out central heating, all your electronics to work and a shop / take away close by, then this cottage is not for you......but that leaves it for the rest of us to luxuriate in! Liz and Delyth have very thoughtful notes, that are just where you need them to answer any queries without having to speak to anyone...bliss again! Needless to say, we will be back, in a heartbeat!

Perfect getaway from everyday life in stunning location

Set in beautiful surroundings, this property is perfectly located for stunning cliff top walks. Due to its remote location and its tranquillity, Clover Cliff feels like you're safely tucked away far from the rest of the world (though there is a village nearby). The perfect place to unwind from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and (in my case) to focus on my writing. I visited in late February and the house wasn't particularly warm overall (it only has night-storage heaters), however it was lovely to warm up by wood-burning oven in the evenings. As other reviewers have mentioned, the drive through the farm needs to be approached carefully due to the potholes in the road, but the property managers warned of this issue prior to arrival. All in all, I had a fantastic stay and would visit again.

Lovely peaceful location with great views and easy access to lots of good walks

A lovely little rustic bungalow on the cliff top close to Rhossili Bay. Well stocked with information about the history and geology of the local area together with maps and books for walking. Good bird watching and very tranquil! With no TV or wifi it's a great place to escape from the bustle of everyday life!

What a View!

We (4 adults, 3 kids (aged 3,5 and 5)and a dog) had fabulous week at Clovercliff in sunny Wales (it really was sunny almost every day and in the mid 20s). The house worked really well for our two families with the adults in the two rooms downstairs and the kids in the room upstairs. So what was so good? 1. The support from the owner Liz before we arrrived (she answered my numerous questions almost instantly). 2. The location- amazing views of Worms Head, right on the costal path for dog walking and running and really quiet (you can hear the waves). 3. The garden - perfect for children to play in, ideal for a dog to be contained in (as long as your dog can’t climb stiles) and there is an outside tap to rinse wetsuits, body boards etc before hanging them on the line. 4. The house - well equipped for cooking, enough storage for a weeks worth of shopping, a table big enough for us all to eat at, a separate toilet from the bath/shower, a small washing machine for little people’s clothes and comfy (in a lived in kind of way) sofas. I imagine it would be cosy in the winter too with a log burner though we spent every evening sat on the back porch watching the sun set and hardly sat on the sofas. 5. The beach - Rhossili beach is beautiful and perfect for digging sandcastles, body boarding/surfing and taking your dog to (year round). We walked there from the cottage some of the days - about 2.5km along the coastal path and other footpaths then fetched one car to drive the kids home. There is an uphill walk from the beach each day but the ice cream shop at the top of the hill was a great bribe! There is also a great cafe at the top which sells good coffee and cake - a pit stop on the way to the beach if you walk there. 6. The lack of TV and WiFi - lots of playing and conversations were on the menu instead. There was some 4G if you stood in the right place so you could send a WhatsApp or check the weather but not much more than this. Very few negatives, however : 1. The lane to the cottage (especially past the farm) is full of potholes and very rough. Our car is a Volvo R Design and quite low to the floor so we tried to drive as little as possible as we were worried about damaging it. 2. The stairs to the upstairs are narrow and steep - our kids (almost 4 and two 5 year olds) were fine but you might want a stair gate for any younger. 3. The recycling system is a bit complicated - read carefully. All in all I would definitely recommend!

A magical place !

Clover Cliff Cottage felt like home from the minute we arrived. It felt welcoming and warm, and had absolutely everything we needed. We also enjoyed not having a television, it made our break relaxing, and we played games, (lots of which are provided), read (a good variety of interesting books and maps are also provided), but probably spent the most time watching the light change over the most spectacular view. The view is just stunning, and on full display from all the main living areas of the cottage, and a couple of the bedrooms. On misty mornings it was quite hypnotic watching the view reveal itself as the sun burnt off the mist. In the evenings we sat outside and watched the sun set with a glass of wine...bliss ! We walked a lot, directly from the cottage on the Coastal Path. We walked to Rhossili, The Worms Head, Mewslade Bay and to Port Eynon 6 miles along the Cliffs, the dog was exhausted ! We did need the dogs lead though, the cliffs are steep and sheep plentiful ! In all, we had a very peaceful and relaxing week at Clover Cliff, we unwound completely and were very sorry to leave. It casts quite a spell on you .. We loved it and will be going back as soon as we can. The Randalls and Rosie the BMD.

Another five stars from us

"Us" is: a Mum, two grown-up sons (21 and 18) and their teenage sisters (16 and 14). We all enjoyed the place so much. The biggest compliment is that even the beloved computer was not missed! It is obvious that the location is for nature lovers - we recommend hiking boots. We had warm and sunny weather but could also imagine the place to be very cozy in less favourable conditions. The personal information provided regarding the history of the house and the surrounding landscape was much appreciated and contributed to the fact that we felt well and at home and - for the short period that we were there - also responsible for the preservation of this wonderful spot on earth. So good luck to Clover Cliff, Liz, Oliver and Gail and all the future guests.

Heaven

This is a property that is extremely hard to beat in terms of it's location. It is isolated, but does not feel lonely. The sky and the sea, and nature in all it's great beauty, dominate. This is not a place for the technophobe, but a place to unwind, relax and rejuvenate. Just a few yards from from the cottage is the coast path, with stunning views of the little coves and beaches nearby, and endless potential for walking and exploring. Rhossili beach nearby is magnificent, the sight of which never ceases to lift the spirits with its beauty. The property is accurately described, and warm, cosy and comfortable. My daughter, son in law and year old baby enjoyed staying in the roof bedroom, and so long as you are careful and fit, the tiny staircase would not pose too much of a problem. All the amenities one could wish for are not far away in the little village of the Mumbles, including lots of lovely little shops to suit all the family. The Italian restaurant Verdi's has wonderful food and specially ice cream, but that just may have been superseded this year by the discovery of Joe's coffee crunch ice cream.......delicious! If all that a city centre can offer is required, Swansea is just along the bay, but really, for me, nowhere beats just being at Clover Cliffe cottage; it's just perfect, but please don't tell too many people!

Wonderful

Gower is now our favourite place. Clover Cliff gave us everything we look for in our family holidays, the beauty of nature all around us - the location and setting is perfect. We have camped for our last few hols and the luxury of hot water, warm beds etc was much appreciated. Great attention to detail with all you need yet not overly fussy this place was perfect for us, the renovations have kept the essence and the history of Clover Cliff with modern comforts, we loved it. We found Gower locals so friendly and helpful too. Our group included teenagers aged 19 and 15, and 12 and 8 yr olds, no one was bored or missed TV or internet very much at all, the kids spent many hours late into the night hunched over the monopoly board after days spent discovering coves or walking out to Worms Head or body boarding in the fabulous surf at Mewslade and Rhossili. I almost don't want to write this review telling others how great this place is! We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to gain some wonderful family memories at this very special place. We will return!

About the host

Host profile image
The Lucas Family have managed Clover Cliff since 2008 when Ollie and Liz took it over from Ollie's cousin, Patrick and the Robin family. It has been a labour of love as we have made significant improvements fitting double glazing, bringing toilet access indoors (yes indoors!), a new kitchen, new bathroom and hot water system and new
storage heaters. The roof has also been renewed and isulated for cosy winter weeks beside the log burner (logs provided!) and the parking area in the field is surfaced to help with access which was sometimes a challenge in wet weather in the past. We aim to provide something that is practical and comfortable but which lets the natural surroundings speak for themselves.
Working on this has brought us into contact with such friendly and supportive local people and neighbours. Although we do not live locally we aim to always be available on the end of a phone and have great people who look after the house and grounds in our absence.

Why they chose this property

The house was built by Ollie’s grandparents to give their children close contact with the natural world away from the noise and pollution of London. They were passionate about Gower and were involved in the beginnings of the Gower Society and in the campaign to have it made an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Ollie’s mother was staying at Clover Cliff when he was born and the small murals painted on the plaster of the sitting room were done by his grandfather, mother and aunts. He felt the place was in his bones and although he only lived there a short time, loved wandering the cliffs and beaches as a boy. Now it is not only our business project and families holiday home but also an inspiration for artists like Ollie.
Sadly, Ollie died unexpectedly in 2015 but his wife, Liz and their children and grand children continue to enjoy all the activities that Clover Cliff and the Gower has to offer and continue to enable others to do the same.

What makes this property unique

Fantastic sea views, seclusion, slowing down, chilling out, contemplating the changing light and sea, watching birds, sharing our love of the natural outdoors with our children and grandchildren without having to get in a car first. Walking to Mewslade beach, surfing and making sandcastles, barbecues on the shingle at Ramsgrove and walking our dog, Ernie. Finding a secret place to sit alone on the cliffs. Walking to Hillend for lunch over Rhossili Down and back along Rhossili beach. The walk to the end of the Worm when the tide is right. Listening to winter storms outside beside the cosy wood burner. Friendly neighbours. Drawing in Mewslade valley (and just about everwhere else!) Waking up and watching the light change over The Worm as the sun comes up with a cup of tea in bed!
Evening meals or a BBQ and wine looking at the sunset.
Chasing rabbits - I never caught one (Ernie the dog).
Please be aware that we have no television or wifi and for some mobile phone networks, the signal can be variable.
A technology free holiday!
