Lovely gîte with beautiful private garden

We really enjoyed our stay. Sandra and Paul were excellent hosts and had plenty of suggestions for walks, supermarkets, restaurants and places to visit. The house is comfortable and spotlessly clean with lots of homely touches. We loved the beautiful private garden , a real treat in the evening after a day out. The Mayenne area is really quiet with some really interesting towns and sights. We loved the Roman town of Jublans and Sainte Suzanne . The old railway lines are perfect for walking or running and the Velorail is great fun.

Simply the best!

Wonderful property in quiet location with hosts who were very welcoming. Lots of places to visit in the area but the best bit was getting back to sit in the garden with a drink or two in the late afternoon. We were blessed with excellent weather for the first week in October which made the whole fly by. We have taken gite holidays for over thirty years and this was the best one ever.

Peace and quiet

Beautiful property, sparkling clean, well equipped with absolutely everything you could wish for. Paul and Sandra are the perfect hosts; helpful and friendly but not intrusive. The grounds are lovely and the area is steeped in history, we especially liked Lassay Les Chateaux and Sainte-Suzanne. But the very best bit…..? The peace and quiet was what struck me most and just what we needed.

Fantastic Stay

My partner and I spent a short week at Chantrigne and loved every second of it. The house is really welcoming and furnished with everything you would need in the kitchen. The location is really peaceful and the locals are really friendly. Paul and Sandra seem to have thought of everything and the welcome basket meant that we didn't need to stress on arrival about finding a shop. We will for sure be looking to go back.

A little slice heaven

Hosts Sandra and Paul are so welcoming, They added some lovely personal touches to what was already a delightfully peaceful haven. The cottage is beautiful and very well quipped and the gardens are glorious, wonderful to sit in and pretty to look at whatever the weather. We thoroughly recommend La Petite Maison and so does our dog Pepper!

Beautifully appointed and located stone gite

The property is as described in the details. In fact it's better! The hosts were a perfect blend of there when needed and showing discretion giving us space to enjoy our stay. Lovely spot in the Mayenne. A must see is a visit to Fougere and Domfront. Local villages are also worth a visit especially Lassay Le Chateau

Wonderful in every way!

Five stars just aren't enough for this idyllic place! We have been several times and the only downside is that eventually, you have to leave. It has everything you need for a perfectly peaceful and relaxing holiday. Local shopping is excellent and Chantringne boulangerie definitely has the best bread in the area. Cycling around the lanes is fabulous, there are so many beautiful things to see along the way. The old railway lines and the towpath along the Mayenne make lovely leisurely rides or walks with plenty of wildlife to see along the way. The house has everything you need and more! Lovely linen and towels and a shower to die for. The garden is a delight where you while away many hours with a book and a glass of wine (or two), with the added bonus that the "Chickie Girls" might come to visit as well. This really is a wonderful place, we are relaxed the minute we get out of the car! Mark and Wendy Sussex

If you only ever try one !!!

We arrived fashionably late,( By a day due to traffic in England). I rang Sandra and Paul to let them know, Sandra then suggested she go and buy provisions for us.We eventually arrived to find a well stocked fridge etc and a welcome pack. On arrival the gite was immaculately presented, exceptionally homely with some touches seldom seen in any other Gite we have experienced. (We've been to lots) The owners are a bundle of knowledge about the area and local cuisine Try the Restaurant in the town for a true French experience. The gardens at the Gite are a delight, a credit to the time and effort put in by Sandra and Paul, if you only ever visit one Gite in your Life you would be hard pushed to better this one. Keep up the great work Kevin, Gillian, Lauren and John

A real getaway from it all location

We had a wonderful holiday at La Petite Maison. The cottage was very clean and well equiped with everything you could possibly need. But it was Sandra's attention to detail that turned it from just being another holiday cottage into a real home from home. Sandra and Paul are extremely helpful and friendly, not intrusive but just good to know they are around should you need help with anything. Not fogetting Benji one of the friendliest dogs we have ever met, (He didn't even bark when we arrived on our first night, but seemed more content just to wag his tail and be petted). We would certainly hope to return one day and would recommend it highly. Peter and Margaret

Outstandingly beautiful - inside and out

This is the second wonderful holiday we have experienced at La Gautrie and we are planning to return again. Beautiful accommodation and surroundings; peaceful and picturesque- you can do and find as much or as little as you wish knowing that you return to a little piece of heaven. Sandra and Paul are wonderful hosts who we can't thank enough for a special holiday. We would have no hesitation in recommending a stay to anyone (but don't tell too many people!)

Beautiful rural tranquility

This was our third visit to this delightful place and it still excites us to arrive for our two week stay. Lovely comfortable accommodation in idyllic setting in the countryside. Delightful private garden for lounging in the sun with BBQ and sunbeds supplied.. All the equipment you need including a terrific log burner for the occasional cooler night and a huge dining table. Large flat screen tv and wifi. Check out their wine which they supply cheaply, bargain.... also their resident truly free range chickens for tasty fresh eggs. Wonderful ,restful sleep in comfy beds..Super shower too ! Many great locations to visit nearby such as Lassay with it`s wonderful Chateau, great to sit in the square with a beer or wine or St Suzanne for its medieval atmosphere and castle, or the massive roman amphitheatre and fortress at Jublain. Paul and Sandra are lovely, warm and welcoming hosts along with their delightful and mega-cool doggie, Barney !.. If you are lucky, you may even see their resident barn owl or the swallows nesting in the cellar. Can`t recommend too highly and we`ll certainly be back for more of the same....Enjoy !.... Thank you Sandra and Paul, a bientot, Rob, Jean and Max

Perfectly peaceful!

It doesn't get much better than this! Lovely location, gorgeous garden, perfect peace and quiet. The house really is home from home, very comfortable and well equipped. Sitting on the steps when its dark, the stars are amazing to see. The local restaurant in Chantringne is a must and Lassay Les Chateaux is a delight to explore. Paul and Sandra are the perfect hosts, we really couldn't ask for better. If we could give it more stars we would. Shelley & Jake West Sussex

Fantastic!

Our second stay at this wonderful place. The fact that so many guests return at least once is a testament to Sandra and Paul's hospitality and this lovely, relaxing location. Our hosts are there if you need them without being at all intrusive. They know the area well and can advise on any trips or things to do. Weather again not great for us but it still didn't spoil our week. We will be back...

Another perfect holiday !

Having spent a wonderful week in "The Bread Oven" last year, we decided to return this year and try "The Little House". We were not disappointed. It has all the charm and comfort of the other along with a little more space. The decor and attention to detail are things rarely found a rental property and we could not recommend it more highly. Sandra and Paul have made every effort to provide their guests with detailed information of the local area. This allows you the opportunity to explore the surroundings armed with essential details such as where to park, eat and shop. There is no need to take a guide book, Sandra has this covered, and in our opinion, does a much better job ! Amongst the many other talents that the hosts possess ( those of jam making, cider making and the ability to create a beautiful environment in which to relax, to name but a few ), they appear to know just when it is that their guests need to ask something of them. At these times you will always be able to find them somewhere in the grounds. Equally, when you want to enjoy blissful isolation, they have disappeared, and you feel like you are the only ones there. Go to La Gautrie. Do as little or as much as you want. We gaurantee you will not be disappointed. It is a little piece of heaven, created by two of the loveliest people you could hope to meet.

beautiful cosy cottage

We had a lovely magical week at La Petite Maison.we enjoyed everything about the holiday. Sandra & Paul where so friendly and not intrusive at all. Barney their dog was the most laid back dog I've every met. He would make friends with any dog. The cottage is very comfortable and so cosy. Our weather was sunny but not very warm,so we only sat in the garden on a few occasions .would of liked to relaxed more in the lovely garden. The villages in the area not very far away. Had some great meals in both Lassay and Chantringe , such good value. On arriving at the cottage Sandra & Paul and Barney where waiting for us. The cottage was immaculate. Which I do like to find when I come on holiday. Sandra's raspberry jam is to die for. would love to come back here again and would certainly recommend it to any one who is thinking of coming to this area for a holiday. I would give it 10 stars if I could. X

SECOND VISIT AND MORE TO COME

Just returned from second visit and looking forward to our next. Sandra & Paul are fantastic hosts, the cottage is a home from home, and all you require is at hand, with Sandra & Paul always there to answer any questions. The restaurant in Chantringe is a must for lunch (English speaking waitress), a good variety of restaurants are found locally, super markets, shop within five minute drive . Lassey is picturesque , with its chateau, and local pubs ! On this visit we took our friends who were overwhelmed by the high standard of accommodation that Sandra & Paul have achieved. We look forward to our return next year ! Stella & Nick Rugby

wonderful

We loved our week at La petite Maison, the cottage is very comfortable tastefully furnished and well appointed, and the gardens, the setting and location superb. Sandra and Paul are the perfect hosts on hand for any problems,(of which there were none ) but never intrusive. This was our first time in the Mayenne, and we found the area to beautiful and most interesting. We would definitely recommend the cottage and hope to return soon.

Loved La Petite Maison

We received a very warm welcome from Sandra and Paul at La Gautrie. The cottage is absolutely delightful, lovingly restored and tastefully decorated. Attention to detail here is impressive, starting with the thoughtful welcome pack which included home made jam and a treat for the dog. Kitchen appliances, plumbing and bed linen are high quality. Set in well planted, spacious landscaped gardens, surrounded by beautiful countryside - so relaxing. We enjoyed nearby Lassay les Chateaux - a pretty town just 5 minutes drive away and there are many other equally attractive places to explore in this area. Paul and Sandra are a charming couple who have worked hard to make this place special. We are highly likely to return to La Gautrie - thank you!

Charming Hideaway

This has been by no means my first visit to La Gautrie and La Petite Maison and yet again a delight. Sandra and Paul have attended to every detail and while there are many wonderful properties on Owners Direct it is those details that make the difference and it is their blending of English Cottage style and French Gite that make a stay so charming. The 'arrivals pack' is always welcome as you find your feet but soon you are off to search out your baguette or a pain au chocolat be it from Chanterigne or Lassay. The local town is well served with shops and an Intermarche on the outskirts with provision for 24 hour fuel and 24 hour milk from an enterprising farmer ! Paul, Sandra and Barnie (their dog) will ensure that you have a great time exploring this tranquil part of France be it by car, bike or foot. A fantastic place to leave the pace of modern life behind and relax.

Tranquility

What to say ? well, we`ll be going back !... We arrived and immediately fell in love with the Gite and surroundings. Sandra and Paul greeted us and a lovelier couple it would be hard to meet. Very helpful and friendly. Accomodation spot on. The best shower we have encountered and lovely comfortable bedroom. If the need takes you, just choose from their huge( not exaggerating) collection of DVDs. Terrific woodburner in the lounge for any cooler evenings. Local area really nice countryside and nearby Lassay les Chateaux, a photographers dream. Much to see and do within short drive .

About the host

Hosted by Sandra Hughes

Host profile image
Paul and I both had busy lives, too much stress, unhealthy lifestyles and not enough 'together' time. We would longingly watch all those TV programs about changing your life, moving to the country, renovating a dilapidated barn into a designers dream, all whilst Kevin McCloud peered into the camera wringing his hands in despair - if only that could be us! We decided to leave our London lives behind, we put our furniture in storage, rented out our property, packed our Clio with all our essential worldly belongings and set off for France with a map and a gite booked for 7 weeks. Sixteen years later we are still here and loving the french life! We (meaning Paul) have gained many skills along the way - plumbing, electrics, stonemasonry, joinery, roofing and landscaping to name but a few! We can also now speak very reasonable French (starting from a baseline of no french at all), Paul was a member of our village council for 7 years and we taught English for 4 years to the children in the local school - although to be honest I think we learnt more French from them than they learnt English from us! We have four stray french ginger cats who gave adopted us and two lazy non egg laying chickens!

Why they chose this property

We started our search for a property further south towards Saumur and Tours but on a day trip north we chanced upon the department and river of Mayenne and absolutely fell in love with the area! Family, friends, eating and socialising are the main focus for everyone here so there's never any hurry and nothing is ever too busy or too much trouble. It's great to just relax, unwind and enjoy the everyday beauty of the surrounding landscape, the abundance of fantastic wildlife and listen to the quietness. Although we live on a hilltop with great views all our local amenities are just down the road. The river Mayenne is just 7kms away with great walks and cycle tracks, its never busy and parking is free and easy! In addition the coast is only an hour and a half away for those days when we fancy some sea air, a run on the beach and a plate of really fresh shellfish.

What makes this property unique

Knowing how important holidays are when your time is precious we wanted to create a holiday cottage that we would have wanted to stay in when we were on holiday - soft pillows, white linen on the bed and a great big shower with lots of hot water, (not just a luke warm trickle whilst crouching in a small smelly cubicle). A pretty private outdoor garden to sit and enjoy a glass of wine, read a book or just lie back and relax. Most of all a place that could feel like a home not just a holiday let.
We also wanted to take the hassle out of trying to find out about local places to visit or eateries that are good value and great food rather than discovering it all on the last day when your holiday is almost over. We have put together a comprehensive book with all the local attractions, restaurant recommendations and information leaflets, along with books on the local area, cycling and walking routes and trips further afield if you are feeling adventurous. We look forward to welcoming you at La Gautrie and seeing you soon - A bientôt Sandra et Paul !
