Fabulous week away!

A stunning and comfortable property which we used as a good base to explore the local attractions. The roads leading to and from the house are very much single track roads (although aren't overly busy so it's not much of an issue but be warned, they are very tight!) and the tv signal isn't great (neither is the wifi within the far reaches of the house) but whilst this is useful to be aware of, none of it detracts from what is a brilliant place to stay. Great communication from the owner. Gorgeous views. Peaceful. Spacious and well decorated. We had a great week and were all sad to leave. The only suggestion I have which I think could have improved pur experience would have been a small welcome hamper on arrival. We arrived quite late (our fault due to work commitments) and ended up having to go to Tesco about 23:30 to get some bits and pieces in, so just a little something with some basic local produce would have been much appreciated.

Wonderful barn

We loved our stay at Hopewell Barn. The barn itself was spacious and very clean and had everything we needed. We loved the kitchen in particular, the view is spectacular! Our children also enjoyed visiting the sheep in the neighbouring field! We would love to return in the future.

Perfect for Views and Walking

The barn is a great location for scenery and walking. Walks are in easy reach with out having to drive away from the barn. The valley, which the barn overlooks, is beautiful and full of birdsong. The barn is fully equipped for a comfortable stay, spacious, clean and well maintained. The kitchen is huge. The host is friendly, helpful and welcoming and the location is peaceful and undisturbed. We will certainly return.

Great location and house

Great location away from the crowds. Beautiful, cleaned house (which was well equipped) with a very welcomed wood burner. We had a lovely stay despite the very changeable weather! And of course we just left on a very sunny day.....

Lovely Barn in beautiful location

The photographs of this barn don’t do it justice - it’s very impressive. The kitchen, which is one whole small barn is really stunning with wonderful views across the valley. The seating area is very comfortable. The two upstairs bedrooms are small but adequate and well furnished. We very much enjoyed our stay.

Great barn in a great location

The barn is great. It is very well equipped, the kitchen is excellent with an outstanding view across the valley. The barn is perfectly located, with so much to see and do within half an hour’s drive. There are walks everywhere into amazing scenery. This was our first experience of the Wye Valley and if certainly will not be the last.

Wonderful hidden gem

Hope we’ll Barn was a delightful experience. The description and pictures do not do it justice. It’s a truely relaxing place. All that’s missing is some spa music and insense. The house is beautifully laid out and located near lots of great country walks. It’s remote but also close enough to enjoy activities and do a bit of shopping. Views are breathtaking. We will definitely be back. Johnathan was a great host and although we didn’t call on his assistance much at all you know he’s there with local knowledge and support. He even moved the sheep out of the next door field so our dog could have a proper run around. He checked up on us during storm Dudley and Eunice when we had a power cut. Could boy fault this place. Facilities in the house are all you need and is so warm and cosy for that relaxing getaway.

Comfortable house with stunning views

High up overlooking the Wye Valley, this converted barn is a lovely place to enjoy a peaceful break. It is very comfortable, with a wonderfully light, spacious kitchen and plenty of space to eat outside too. The owner who lives nearby, is very welcoming and helpful. There are plenty of walks directly from the house, including to Tintern Abbey, and it is within easy reach of other places to visit, such as Chepstow Castle.

A wonderful break

We had a great time staying at Hopewell Barn. The photos don’t do it justice! It’s a very nice place to stay, especially the kitchen which we spent most of the time, and the views are lovely. We were very lucky with the weather and had glorious sunshine everyday. There’s plenty to do in the warm weather - canoeing, hiking, cycling, swimming. We went to the beach (1.5hr) away too. Our host was accommodating and gave us lots of helpful advice on places to visit and where to eat etc. The barn is pet-friendly and the garden is secure, except for the main gate but the owner kindly lent us some hurdles to make it secure.

great accommodation in a great location

This is a wonderful barn conversion with great views of the wye valley. The barn easily accomodates 5 people with 3 bedrooms one of which is downstairs. The kitchen is very spacious and light and well equipt, and a very comfortable living room. The barn really is a great place to sit and rest or to use as a base for travelling from. To reach the barn it is in very remote area along windy and hilly single track road. Personal transport is essential. great walks are straight from the door step. Nearest towns are about 5 miles away so if you want a quiet relaxing stay in great countryside this is the place for you.

Summer stay

We had a wonderful week just the two of us at this lovely barn conversion. The location is ideal to get away from it all, with gorgeous views over the Wye valley. We sat outside most evenings looking at the view and did some epic hikes up and down the valleys including a big walk to Tintern Abbey. The house has everything you need - with a beautiful light and airy kitchen (windows everywhere you look!), comfortable sofas, smart TV and very comfortable beds. The road is single-track so don’t bring a big car but it adds to the adventure and is absolutely fine after you’ve done it once! We also enjoyed the wildlife that you could see from the rural location. A perfect stay - thank you Jonathan, we will be back! Ross and Sarah

About the host

Hosted by Jonathan Cockburn

Host profile image
We have lived in the Wye Valley for over 35 years. 12 years ago we converted our old barn into a fabulous holiday home. We only live four fields away, so if you need us, we can come and help out at a moment's notice; but we will not be breathing down your neck either! We have three children, but they have all left home now. We still have a small flock of friendly sheep, which you may see from time to time in one of the fields next to the barn.

Why they chose this property

Hopewell Barn is located in an officially designated area of outstanding natural beauty. One of the reasons why we decided to convert our old barn was because it has such brilliant views across the valley. The Wye valley is fabulous for walking, cycling, canoeing and riding and there is alot to explore and see in this area. The local walks are all superb and there is a very popular community run Village Shop only half a mile down our lane. This is the place to visit if you are looking for a rural retreat on the edge of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. Also, although it is in a peaceful area, this part of the Wye valley has good links to the motorway network so it's relatively easy to get to.

What makes this property unique

Hopewell Barn is a place to come to recharge your batteries; so by the time you leave you will feel completely relaxed and ready to take on the world again. The barn has lots of windows and skylights so is always bright and cheerful no matter what the weather and if you don't feel like going for a walk you can always stay in and snuggle up by the wood burning stove and enjoy the views with a warm drink in your hand!
