About this property

Cliff Garden Holiday Cottage in Portloe With Stunning Garden And Sea Views

New This year - flexible short breaks available in April/May 2025. Please take a look at dates/prices available.

CLIFF GARDEN - The cottage has a warm cosy feel and excellent accommodation. All reception rooms and bedrooms have a view of the sea. The famous Lugger Hotel and the Ship Inn are a few minutes walk away.

The garden is a highlight of the property with two stone terraces and a decking area looking right out over the sea, historic harbour and village.

The hallway is a listed lime kiln with plenty of room to hang your coats and leave your muddy boots. Off the hall way is a downstairs WC and utility area with Miele washing machine and tumble dryer.

There are three reception rooms - a breakfast room with a large window where you can sit and relax and watch the sea whilst having your morning coffee. A sitting room with full Sky+ package, DVD player (and selection of DVDs) and WiFi. The sitting room has a wood burning stove to snuggle up in front of in the colder months with a large corner sofa and two arm chairs to fit all the family comfortably. The dining room sits up to 10 people easily.

The kitchen is fully equipped with top quality appliances to include a Neff double oven including microwave and Neff warming drawer, dishwasher and floor to ceiling integrated fridge and separate freezer to stock your food for your stay. There is a full range of glasses even for cocktails and champagne and a Wedgewood dining service. The hob is induction and there is a full range of pots, pans, utensils and a large Le Creuset casserole dish. Tea towels and hand towels are provided - you should have everything you need.

There are three double bedrooms all with sea views - two have kings size beds and the third bedroom has two single beds that can be joined together to make a king size double. Please let me know when booking if you would like this as a double.

One of the bedrooms is en-suite with a bath with shower over. The other bathroom is large with a separate bath, WC, hand basin, large walk in shower, under floor heating and heated towel rail.

Even if you don't want to light the wood burning stove the property has full oil fired central heating, adjustable on the individual radiators.

OUTSIDE SPACE
This is one of Cliff Gardens best features. This can be accessed either by steps from inside the house or up a pathway between two neighbouring properties. At the top of the steps there is a lawn with terrace and table and chairs, seating six, chimenea, and BBQ. At the same level there is a small terrace with our very own canon.
You then walk up a few more steps to a large decking area that overlooks the sea. On the decking there are two steamer chairs as well as a table and chairs for six. The perfect place to sip your wine and enjoy your meals in the sunshine looking at the view.
The garden then continues up to another level where there is a secret garden and a bench where you can be quiet and read your book looking out over the ocean.

Please note that the stairs at the back of the house are quite steep - but there is sloping path access between the neighbouring houses.

Parents of young children please note that there is a fishpond which has been strong wire mesh covered for safety.

Pets are very welcome - our dog loves his Cornish escapes with us.

CAR PARKING
You can park outside the garage beside the property. There is space for one large car here. If you have a small vehicle then that can be parked inside the garage itself. There is a car park in the village approximately 3 mins walk away.

CHILD FRIENDLY
There is a travel cot with additional mattress, changing mat, stair gate and a high-chair.
There is a range of toys and games for children including a chalk board and books.
The little harbour is lovely for small children to paddle and look at the fishing boats.

Changeover Day: Usually Friday, however please contact owner as can be flexible off season.

Rates are subject to change until confirmed.

A deposit of 1/2 the full price is taken upfront and the remainder is payable 6 weeks before the date of the stay. This is paid directly to VRBO.

Fabulous House

We had an amazing winter break in this lovely, characterful house. Fiona couldn't have been more helpful, and everything was provided for. We loved Portloe, and the bonus of having a parking space was very useful. We'd definitely like to return to make more use of the lovely garden spaces too. My mum is 83, uses a stick, but managed to get up the steps to enjoy the view! Loved it!

Beautiful Cottage and surprisingly large

This lovely old character property is well equipment, comfortable and cosy as well as being surprisingly large. The only thing I feel compelled to mention are the very steep concrete steps to the garden out the back door, there is an alternative route to the garden that avoids these steps but not directly from the cottage. The bed was extremely comfortable and the log burning stove in the lounge was a dream to use. Would recommend bringing a small car, if you can, as the roads in and out of Portloe (and most the surrounding area) are typical Cornish country lanes with one car's width with occasional passing places, a lot of reversing up was required to get around. We have a Toyota CHR and found it a tight squeeze, even had my wing mirror clipped a couple of times, despite me being up against the hedge on my side. It won't stop us visiting Cornwall we will just use my partner's smaller Aygo next time. Fiona, the owner of the cottage couldn't be more helpful and her pre-visit instructions were very detailed.

Great location, lovely property, and a very thoughtful, responsive and helpful host. Weather was not so kind but the house was warm and cosy so it did not matter.

Cliff Garden

Wonderful spacious house with an amazing garden with views to die for. Lovely sea views from all the bedrooms and reception rooms. The property is very well equipped and has large comfortable beds, you need for nothing. However I would not recommend to anyone with mobility problems as the steps up to the garden are very steep. My husband and I would definitely book again.

Lovely weekend break!

We had a lovely break here. Great communication from Fiona throughout booking. The home is very clean, comfortable and well-equipped plus the views from the bedrooms are amazing! Property is within a stones throw of the small harbour (perfect to give the dog a quick run) and the local pub with very friendly owner. Would absolutely recommend the property and the village.

Absolutely wonderful 🙌

We could not have asked have for anything more. The property is stunning with every large double bedroom benefitting from a sea view. Literally home from home! Kitchen well equipped with high end appliances. The garden is wonderful and we would love to return in the summertime to see all the plants in bloom, it’s obvious lots of time and effort has been put in. Visited for Christmas with 5 adults and two well behaved dogs. 5 stars!

A week in Cornwall

Beautiful house, amazing location with wonderful views, very tastefully furnished and extremely well-equipped, very gpod quality linen and general house finishes, lovely design and decor, garden was magical and interestingly layered. Communication with the owner was prompt and very informative. Our dog was very at home and loved the cliff top walks a stone's throw from the house. We have no fault to make whatsoever. Nicest property and spot we have stayed in, in Cornwall and we have stayed in many.

Perfect house for a family

Fiona's house was perfect for our family of five with a dog. The communication was amazing throughout and a small issue we had with the bed configuration was sorted within an hour. The whole house is well equipped, the location near to the harbour and 2 mins walk to the pub was ideal for us. The stairs to the garden are slightly steep but once up there the views were magical. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Beautiful Cottage in Lovely Location

Cliff Garden is a spacious yet cosy cottage with a spectacular view of the sea. The cottage is beautifully decorated and is really well equipped. The garden is really special - lots of garden rooms that our dogs enjoyed exploring. Cliff Garden is positioned in the heart of the village of Portloe and it is easy to walk down to the sea, walk the coastal path or pop to the village pub but it also easy to drive to many other places in the area. Fiona’s communication was excellent from start to finish - she provided lots of helpful information so that our holiday ran smoothly. We would highly recommend a stay at Cliff Garden.

Nice location

Very nice property for a 1-week stay in a lovely little cove. Quirky lay-out since the property seems to be combined with an old kiln. Lights are on all night in car park below which is a bit polluting, but that is not the fault of the property owner. Good overall.

Wonderful cottage by the sea

We had a fabulous fortnight at Cliff Garden, and we’re lucky enough to have great weather. The cottage is perfect for those who love the water as you can swim / kayak / SUP etc from the harbour which is a minute’s walk away. The cottage is comfortable and spacious with plenty of room for storage. The beds are very comfy and the walk in shower is awesome! The garden has amazing views but isn’t easy to access so this is not a cottage for those who can’t climb steep stairs (our dog couldn’t manage them so we had to take him outside and round to the garden via the road every time he wanted to go out!). There is always plenty of hot water for baths / showers, good laundry facilities and the kitchen is well equipped too. Thank you Fiona for a fantastic stay, we loved it.

Cliff Garden

Exceptional property in the beautiful village of Portloe. We booked this stay as part of our honeymoon and upon arrival the owners had left us a card and a bottle of prosecco which was a lovely touch. The house itself is very quaint and has lots of character. It's tastefully decorated and has high quality fixtures and fittings throughout. The highlight for me had to be the garden and many evenings were spent there with family. We made use of the bbq and chimonhea. The views from the very end of the bbq are just beautiful. Portloe itself only has 2x places in which you can eat. The Lugger was only serving food to residents during our stay (covid related) and whilst The Ship Inn is a nice pub I wouldn't rate the food highly. Be prepared to drive for a nice meal - there are however lots of nice places a short distance away. Would highly recommend and I'm sure we will be returning to stay again at some point!

Host profile image
I have let Cliff garden since 2005. We use the cottage as a family holiday home too so I have tried to make it really comfortable and a good place to stay to enjoy the best Cornwall has to offer. I like to think of Cliff Garden as a home way from home and hope you will too.

Why they chose this property

Portloe is a beautiful picturesque fishing village on the Roseland Peninsula. It has wonderful beaches and cliff walks. Local pubs and restaurants serve delicious cuisine. It is very peaceful yet you are able to travel to all the attractions of Cornwall quickly and easily. A bus service runs through the village to local areas which can be very handy.

The cottage is actually situated on the South West Coat Path with stunning cliff views - perfect for walkers, and their four legged friends.

The little harbour and beaches nearby are perfect for walkers, swimmers, anglers and professional sand castle builders.

What makes this property unique

The atmosphere of the cottage and its garden is such that it is the perfect place to unwind. The lovely sea air and listening to the waves is so relaxing. To sit up in the garden and look out over the sea has meant many guests have hardly left the property during their stay.

The house has a comfortable feel with top quality beds for a good nights sleep.

The friendly Ship Inn about 100 metres away serves good pub food. The little harbour is ideal for swimming or paddling as well as watching the boats go in and out. Freshly caught crab and lobster is readily available.
