About this property

Beautiful Thatched Grade II Listed Cottage near Stonehenge & Salisbury

Old Turnpike Cottage (sleeping up to 6), appeared as their "Thatched Property of the Week" in the Sunday Times - a charming traditional stone, thatched cottage in the pretty Wiltshire village of Teffont which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It has a large inglenook fireplace and its own private south facing lawned garden with great views and a summerhouse. There are good transport links (Tisbury railway station is 4.4 miles away) and the village is 2.5 miles from the A303. Nearby there are great walks, country pubs, a National Trust property (Dinton Park & Philipps House) beautiful views of the English countryside. It is ideally situated for exploring all the local attractions of Stonehenge, Old Sarum, Salisbury Cathedral, Wilton House and the Nadder Valley which is well known for its fishing. Bath is a little further away and Bournemouth and its beaches about one hour's drive.

Cozy, thatched cottage

Thatched buildings abundant in Teffont, close to the town of Tisbury, with all the basics including a good village pub, The Boot. A car is highly recommended as buses are infrequent.

Wonderful stay in a very comfortable cottage

We had a wonderful stay in the cottage. The house is cosy and comfortable, located in an idealic little village. Host Andy provided us with great tips for walks, activities and restaurants. We had a couple of rainy days, but that didn’t really bother us because the house is so comfortable. We would definitely come back!

Idyllic Cottage

Could not have asked for more from this beautiful little cottage. Great location--close to a lot of attractions. Everhot took some adjustment but otherwise, no issues. Easy access to some great walks, Black Dog Pub, both Teffont churches were lovely.

Beautiful Cottage

We loved the cozy cottage in this beautiful little village and just took day trips to Bath and Stonehenge. There are great pubs in the area, although a car is a must. The neighbor was super helpful and knowledgeable about the area as well. We wished we had allocated more time.

Magical cottage in gorgeous setting

There aren’t words that would do this property justice. The cottage is absolutely beautiful, and has a real sense of history. The yard is like something out of a fairytale. And the village is so quiet and peaceful. It was a perfect base for visiting Salisbury and Just a short drive from Winchester. Was sad to leave, and would love to go back.

Beautiful!

Can't fault this cottage! Beds were really comfortable and it was so cozy in the lounge (especially as we had not the best weather and lit the fire every night!). Also loved the fact I could get away for some quiet time in the summer house. We were a bit worried about cooking on the Aga-like cooker but managed to rustle up a couple of lovely meals. Communication with owner and caretaker was excellent which meant check-in and sorting out any issues (only had one and that was more a quirk of the house!) was easy and stress free. Would love to stay here again.

Einfach Super

Hallo Amanda Hallo Andy We liked our stay in Teffont very much therefore we wrote you a poem. Hope you will like it. Kind regards Jürgen Old Turnpike Cottage in Teffont’s Embrace Nestled in Teffont, near Salisbury's gleam, Where the meadows whisper and the rivers dream, Lies Old Turnpike Cottage, a gem of the past, With a story in stone that forever will last. Its thatched roof, a crown of golden grace, Woven with care in time's gentle embrace, Awarded in honor, a prize well-earned, For the craft and the skill in which it was learned. The sun's tender rays on the thatch softly play, As breezes from Teffont dance on their way. Windows that gaze on a world ever still, Yet within, there's a warmth that no winter can chill. The owners can be proud of such a fine place, Amanda ensures guests feel welcomed and safe, Jürgen, Claudia, and Marie say thanks with delight, For a wonderful stay in this cottage so bright.

Warm, Welcoming & Nicely Furnished Thatched Cottage

I had a lovely stay at this property with my wife and 3 young children in early spring. The photos don’t do it justice! It’s both nicer and bigger than it appears with all the comforts of a real home. The weather was cold and wet but the cottage was warm and welcoming. It has a large real fireplace, heated floors and a stove (EverHot like an Aga) that stays hot all the time. Lovely large back garden. The village is small and some of the roads are single track but it’s not far by car to larger roads and towns. Perfectly situated for Stonehenge and Salsibury. We also visited Cerne Abbas and the amazing Bovington Tank Museum. The owner and caretaker were very responsive and courteous.

Idyllic

The village setting was idyllic, and we took many long walks right from the cottage doorstep. The beds and bedding were top notch, the fireplace was as great as it looks, and the kitchen a nice size with views over the countryside. It took some getting used to, but we figured out the Everhot. As listed, there is no microwave, and we found we missed this more than expected. Our visit was in winter and it took some time to figure out the owner’s quirky heater settings. The local contact was extremely helpful with this. Our biggest frustration was, despite extremely hot water elsewhere in the house, the shower only ever produced warm water. Even with the few issues described, we had a wonderful stay and happily recommend the cottage.

Niche property with caveats

It could be fun to stay in a very traditional English cottage, but you should bear in mind a few things as it might not be right for you: i. there are feathers throughout the property (eg cushions on couches). if you are allergic, it’s an issue. ii. the property is pretty full of stuff (eg closets, tables, freezer), so you may not feel there is much room. iii. some of the equipment feels pretty old. The washer/dryer didn’t work and while the owners acted asap to deal with this, and are very friendly, I could imagine other issues arising. that said, there are good features and I think a couple with little luggage could have a lovely time.

Charming, calming location – great base for exploring the British countryside

Home, owners, and caretaker of this charming thatched cottage were among the best we've encountered through VRBO. Photos gave us a great sense of what to expect (2022). Home very well maintained and well appointed. My small family (2 adults, 2 teens) found the size of this home "just right." We came for an extended weekend but dream of returning for a much longer stay. Calm countryside surrounds you. Summer house and back yard especially delightful on sunny days. We cooked well in the great kitchen (groceries a short drive away) but also enjoyed local pub meals. Not far from Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral but very distant from tourism. Owners' guide to the region is indispensable and inspires discovery. House is very well maintained and comfortable (especially for an historic thatched cottage!), and caretaker both helpful and accessible. Great books on site a nice plus! We are eager to return here to relax, walk, and explore!

Pretty village. Cottage was beautiful. Lovely furnishings and very cosy. Beds very comfortable . Kitchen well stocked. Secure garden for our dog, with warm summer house to enjoy autumnal drinks in. Excellent instructions on how to use equipment around house. We enjoyed trips to local farm shops, family on South coast and walks in New Forest. Thank you!
