About this property

Quirky, Spacious House in Medieval Square. Nr Cheddar/Bristol/Bath

Quirky & spacious, 'Old Angel' in lovely Axbridge enjoys pride of place in a Medieval Square. And offers a best-of-both-worlds location: near renowned Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with stunning Somerset countryside on the doorstep - and in easy reach of three great UK cities: Bristol, Bath & little Wells.

With wood-burners, a large rambling 'secret' garden & arty charm, it's a home-from-home house, loved by guests for relaxing friend & family get-together's. Airport, coast, culture & heritage sites all nearby.

A Listed house which combines a sense of history with contemporary comfort, the Old Angel is artisan and eclectic in style - flagstone & wood floors, old fireplace or two, scattering of beams, up-cycled furniture, vintage & arty decor.

With a Mediterranean style courtyard for al fresco dining/BBQ area, there's plenty of outdoor space to relax in.

Hidden away from the house and past the Little Angel annexe at the rear of house, is a large and secluded 'secret' garden, with steps leading up to various terraces. Do note that another guest or family member occasionally stays in the apartment, which has it has its own separate entrance & won't impact on your stay in the house. The entire rambling garden is yours to enjoy. Please note: not suitable for unsupervised youngsters.

Spread over three storeys - with 5 bedrooms on each of the first and top floors and an upstairs lounge - the flexible accommodation happily suits either small or larger numbers of guests.

Fully equipped kitchen seating 9, with wood-burner
Adjoining cosy snug room

FIRST FLOOR:
Upstairs living room with wood-burner, overlooking the Square
Spacious King size bedroom/ en-suite bathroom (freestanding bath)

TOP FLOOR:

We'd like the house to feel like home-from-home. With a fully equipped kitchen, gas hob/fan oven, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, fridge & freezer it's well suited for self-catering.

Eating out is also an easy option. Axbridge itself has two good food-serving pubs and charming tearoom. There's a huge variety of restaurants, cafe's and eateries throughout the area: from great fish & chips to Michelin rated inns.

Not to mention those famous cream teas, Farmers' Markets, cider tasting farms & character rural pubs!

GUEST ACCESS
Entrance is directly off The Square. You can park, unload, receive food deliveries right outside.

The large secluded back garden is accessed by private alleyway - past the Little Angel apartment at the rear of the house. (A friend may occasionally stay- separate entrance via alleyway).

Wonderful stay at The Old Angel

Our group of 6 loved our time at The Old Angel. House is amazing and we really enjoyed staying in the square (everyone is so friendly) and visiting the market on the Saturday! Great communication with the hosts. Thank you…we would all love to return one day.

Great Spot for Family Fun

Angel House was spacious enough for us to play cards and talk while some people went to bed early. The Turkish Wetroom was perfect and water pressure was fantastic. The property was huge and the backyard was very nice. The parking was close and simple, the town offers great options. We highly recommend staying here!

Perfect accommodation

We have just arrived back from a weekend in this beautiful house. It was a reunion of 8 school friends and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect house in a beautiful location. The house was so well equipped with everything we needed for our weekend. The house is beautifully decorated with so much space. The outdoor space was amazing and the garden just kept on going. We highly recommend this house and had a perfect weekend away.

Amazing Easter trip

We had an amazing stay at the old Angel. The house is really cute, but spaciyenough for a group of 9 adults. After a long day walking through the Cheddar Gorges, it's the perfect place to get back to, cook a 3 course meal in the fully equipped kitchen, after which we relaxed and played games next to the log fire. We fully recommend, and would stay here again when visiting the area again. Thank Marianne & Simon for having us!

Family gathering

Booked this beautiful house for a birthday weekend and it was simply great. A great location and a warm friendly pub just steps away. We loved it, Saturday morning was amazing as the Farmers Market was on the doorstep. The only regret was not being able to enjoy the wonderful garden as we went in November as I expect it would be outstanding in the summer. Totally recommended.

Fantastic house, fantastic host and fantastic location!

This beautiful house had everything we were looking for. We were a group of ladies on a mini break away from the husband and kids, so it was a great escape with fantastic pubs on our doorstep and a beautiful garden for sunbathing, as we hit the jackpot with the weather too! The house was exceptionally clean, had everything we could possibly need especially in the kitchen. The beds were super comfy and there was plenty of space for all of us in the living room. We would definitely book a return trip!

Amazing find

We had a lovely weekend in this very special property. A 16th century former inn, loads of space - no low ceilings despite its age! Best equipped kitchen I have ever stayed in. Lovely log fires, comfortable beds and beautiful art and 'objets' all around the house. The house is in a very pretty village which is full of history and historical buildings. We ran around the reservoir, had a great trip to Wells and did lovely walking from the house onto the hill behind it. Could not recommend it more.

Family reunion

We were all thrilled with our stay at Old Angel. As well as character, there was comfort. We lacked for nothing. We were blessed with brilliant weather and enjoyed time in the beautiful rustic, terraced gardens . Axbridge is a delightful village & we enjoyed chatting with the friendly locals. Would highly recommend Old Angel to anyone,, I really hope we can come back here again.

Unique and eclectic

We all had a wonderful stay at the Old Angel. It's a fantastic old building, that the owners clearly love and have put a lot of time and effort into decorating. Our children had a great time exploring the garden and looking for frogs as well as trips to Wookey Hole and the coast. The adults enjoyed runs from the front door and relaxing both inside and out.

A fantastic place to stay!

We enjoyed our weekend immensely, everything we needed was either provided or available in the medieval square! The house was comfortable and large enough for the five of us to feel like we had our own space. The weather was good so we were able to enjoy the garden as well as the local pub....four doors away! Thank you Marianne for your clear instructions both by email and left in places around the house. I will definitely be looking at my diary to book again!

Wonderful family weekend in the most beautiful house

The Angel totally surpassed our (already very) high expectations. Amazing character features, beautifully furnished and superbly equipped - all this and more ensured every member of our family group thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only downside was the 2 nights went way too quickly! Axbridge medieval square is a delightful place, steeped in history and a friendly welcome and excellent service and meal were enjoyed in the Lamb pub just a stroll away. The owner, Marianne's thoughtful, generous and timely communication was the icing on the cake, especially as we were arriving on the day of the worst storm in 30 years! Already hoping to return in the not to distant future and properly explore the garden!

A charming House for all generations

We were lucky to find the Old Angel House for our family of seven covering three generations to gather together again after lockdown. We were attracted to the house on the booking site and have to say it lived up to our expectations and more. It is delightful in its quirkiness and history, ideal in its spaciousness and equipped with every essential many times over. We were all fascinated by the objet d’art to discover in every room. Presentation and cleanliness could not be faulted and communication with Marrianne made easy. Thank you for a lovely experience in this gorgeous old house in the Medieval Square of Axbridge .

Best cottage near Cheddar

You recognize you found the right place immediately just looking at the front of the house. You open the door and you feel welcome by the cozy style and atmosphere. You feel to make a jump in the past, but at the same time everything works perfectly in a modern sense. The cottage is super confortable, you find everything you may need. Marianne and Simon are the best hosts, they were very caring to make sure you had all the information you needed and were super available for any questions, also about places, where to eat. We spent 3 nights in the Old Angel, and we were keeping finding new details of the cottage so charming. The garden is amazing, you feel to be in a secret garden like in the fairy tales. It was perfectly cleaned. We enjoyed the fire places in the kitchen and in the living room all the time. It was the first weekend of opening after this long lockdown, the restaurant were open only outdoor, so we arranged with the pub just beside the cottage to order the dinner and they were nocking the door when it was ready. After a such long lockdown, this is really what we needed. THank you so much Marianne and Simon. Daniela
