Beautiful location, amazing property

We stayed at this property for 2 weeks in August 2024. It is a lovely house with a gorgeous pool. The host Susan is the perfect mix of present but unobtrusive. The surrounding area has so much to do, from caves and underground chasms to beautiful villages and Mediterranean beaches. Highly recommend!

Well equipped and ideal location.

Susan was a superb host, very helpful both before and during our stay. The house was very well maintained and equipped with everything you could possibly need, including an extensive book and DVD collection. Only a 10 minute walk the castle and to the local Aldi and Lidl, also close to the several bus routes. The pool was very well used throughout our stay and was clean and well maintained. Thank you Susan, we had a wonderful time.

Villa with great private pool

Susan, was very welcoming. The villa was great, spacious and clean with everything we needed and the pool was fantastic to cool off in on the hot afternoons. Carcassonne itself was a delight with the Cite itself a short 10 minute walk away.

Super house, pool and location

We had a lovely week staying in Maison Fortunat. All adults and our three year old granddaughter loved swimming and relaxing around the clean and well proportioned swimming pool which was especially welcome during some daytime temperatures of 30C plus. Although situated near a fairly busy road this did not impact on our enjoyment. It is a short walk into the Cité which is well worth exploring. The Bastide Saint-Louis is also within walking distance. This part of Carcassonne is also worth visiting especially on market days. We used the bus stop across the road to travel to Lac de la Cavayère (line 2a) which has a sandy beach, several adventurous activities and a beautiful circular walk around the lac. Susan is an excellent host and provided plenty of helpful advice. All the rooms are spacious with ceiling fans. The kitchen is well equipped and the lounge which has a small balcony is a comfortable space to sit, relax and dine. Thank you Susan for a memorable stay in your property. A taxi from the airport to the property cost around 18 euros.

Great location

The property and pool were larger than I was expecting. Handy location with a bakery and Lidl 10 minutes walk away. We caught the bus just across the road to the lake and enjoyed the water park and inflatables there. Great to be able to walk to the castle. Susan was very kind and helpful.

Lovely house, great location

We stayed in this well-equipped house as a family of four (2 adults and 2 teenage girls) in August. The property was very comfortable, with lots of spacious rooms and a great outdoor space. The pool was very refreshing after sunbathing in the complete sun-trap of a garden. We also enjoyed relaxing in the lounge after returning home from an evening out. (Lovely new sofas not shown in photos.) There were well-stocked bookshelves, and lots of dvds and games. The house is an easy ten minute walk from La Cité, which is a beautiful place to visit. We dined out here most nights, and enjoyed exploring the little streets, restaurants and shops. The ramparts tour was fabulous and highly recommended - amazing views. We also liked the Lower town which is a twenty minute walk away. Lots of shops, and a lovely square to sit and people watch whilst enjoying a drink or meal. The fab boulangerie on the main road is a four minute walk away, and it's a ten minute walk to Lidl. We also liked the little Vival sipermarket on the walk back from the Lower town. Susan was a lovely host - helpful but 'invisible'. Speedy responses to texts, and happy to book the taxi back to the airport for us. We had a great holiday, and would happily stay at Maison Fortunat again if we ever returned to Carcassonne.

Excellent location and friendly host

We would highly recommend staying here! The property, was not only very large for a group of 4, it was also very well equipped with everything you need for a weeks stay. The pool area is fantastic; which given the 35 degree heatwave was great for relaxing and cooling off in. Locations wise, the property is close by to an excellent bakery and two supermarkets. Carcassonne castle, which has an abundance of restaurants and shops within the walls is a very easy 10 minute walk away. Susan the host was very welcoming and helpful, providing us with plenty of recommendations and also helping us with booking a taxi. Thanks for a great stay! We would certainly come back!

The best hub to explore pays de Cathares!

We wanted to have the right location to explore not only Carcassonne but also all sights related to pays Cathares. And we found it! The house is great in all dimensions: location (15 min walk from Medieval cite of Carcasssone), space, facilities (great pool! - 5 min walk bakery - 5 min drive Lidl, etc) you name it. On top of that Susan is an ideal host. She was great in helping us organise our schedule for the 8 days and gave us some fantastic tips in terms of locations and restaurants. And she was “invisible” even if she lives with her family on site. I would thoroughly recommend Maison Fortunat and Carcassonne!!

Great location, lovely villa, amazing pool

We stayed at this villa for 10nights in August and it definitely didn’t let us down. There was 5 adults, 1 child and a dog. Rooms were spacious, living room was great looking over the pool and huge kitchen great for dining in. The most important thing we look for when booking a villa is the pool/outside area... and the pictures don’t do it enough justice, the pool is a great size which was well used due to amazing weather +35*c and great shady area to get out of the sun if needed. We walked to the castle ( Cité de Carcassonne) pretty much every night which is a 10 minute walk full of little shops, restaurants and bars great atmosphere and amazing sights. Susan was a great host and made us feel really welcomed in her home, she also helped us with organising a trip to the vets which was close by too. Would definitely recommend staying here if you want a chilled, historical and amazing holiday. Thank you Susan

Homely maison , comfortable and inviting . Nice pool area . Susan made us very welcome and she is very helpful with any requirements . Castle is just a short walk away from house and town is a little further but also easily walkable . The castle area is stunning and can be visited again and again, nice restaurants etc . We would hire a car next time to see more of the area but this visit we just wanted to relax . The Celt Pub is also worth a visit , in town, a lively Irish bar !! ( Susan co- owns it, it's good ) Anyway thanks to Susan again , we enjoyed our stay at Maison Fortunat very much . Kevin and Linda Barker

Great property in an excellent location

This was a great property. It was large and spacious, and had everything we could have needed for our stay there. The private pool was great to have and was of a decent size. Also, the location of the house couldn't have been better especially seeing as we weren't hiring a car and were traveling everywhere by foot. The Medieval City was a short walk away, as was the town centre, two large supermarkets, a fantastic bakery, and countless restaurants. The house was perfect for our stay and I would gladly stay there again if visiting Carcassonne.

Super spot for a short break in the Languedoc region.

The villa is spacious, homely and well equipped with lots of little extras. Even small things like matches, salt, washing up liquid, which means less shopping to think of. The pool is great on a hot day, unfortunately we only had one in our September stay! The owners live in the basement flat and are there if needed. The villa is a short walk to La Cité and a 15 - 20 walk to the town centre. Apart from the Ramparts Museum in La Cité we particularly enjoyed an afternoon watching Carcassonne rugby team, a trip to Narbonne and a visit to a local vineyard Chateau de Pennaultier. Just a couple of points to mention. There is a busy road outside the property which spoilt the enjoyment of the pool slightly but didn't stop us getting a good nights sleep. If you read about a super bakery nearby which other travelers used then just to let you know it isn't open for business anymore but there are other shops a short walk away. Overall a lovely weeks holiday.

Maison Fortunat was perfect!

We spent a week in Maison Fortunat from 1st - 7th June 2017, we had visited Carcassonne to run in the 3rd Carcassonne Marathon and had chosen this as our base. I'm not always lucky in my choice of accommodation but in this case I was, and I was more than delighted! This villa was typically French with high ceilings (many with fans - very welcome addition!), beautiful tiled floors and all the modern appliances you would expect. The bedrooms were spacious (again all with fans) and the master was kitted with a very decent shower and large sink. The décor was tasteful and really made the place feel like home! When in France one of my guilty pleasures is a visit to the boulangerie, Maison Fortunat is lucky to have a modern boutique-style one just 90 seconds walk away. All breads (and cakes) are made fresh daily, so I promptly return with an armful of baguettes, croissants and choclatines. We enjoyed breakfast on the cute balcony overlooking the pool with the sun in our faces - throw in some rich coffee and...perfect. Breakfast lasted a lonnnnng time on that balcony! The pool is the perfect size, large enough to swim, play volleyball or simply jump in and out a thousand times! We found ourselves lounging on the sunbeds quite a lot here (sunshine all day as the pool is south facing). Adults and kids will love this pool, not to mention the shaded chill out area or the bar-b-que spot, this "yard" as we would call it back in Belfast, pretty much had all we'd need for a great relaxing time. We didn't have our own boys with us this time - at 15 and 12 with exams :( but we will be returning, with them in tow. Kids of all ages will find Maison Fortunate a great place to stay. As I mentioned the pool is perfect, there are any number of DVD's and satellite channels to watch on the large screen TV (not that we did, but they're there if needed), but more importantly Carcassonne itself is full of amazing places to visit - but that is for another blog! In short Carcassonne is large enough to have lots for everyone but is close enough to some other major French cities should you require greater stimulation. The castle is worth spending at least a day at. Thank you Susan and Matt for the warm friendly welcome, Maison Fortunat was exactly what we needed (ps the multiple books and guides were a massive help too). We're very much looking forward to visiting next year again! Hugh Watters & Edel Scanlon Belfast, NI

We had expected Maison Fortunate to be nice, but it was wonderful..

We spent two weeks at the property from 5-19 September 2016. The house was really tastefully decorated yet was homely and comfortable. It was equipped with everything we needed. Susan was welcoming and we knew we could call on her if we had a problem, needed information about the area or anything else. The house is ideally located for walking into town or driving further afield - some of us were only too happy to spend time basking in the sun by the gorgeous pool in the beautiful garden! Lots to do and see in the area, though. We hated leaving, but returned home relaxed and refreshed and feeling that we'd had a really good holiday. We can't recommend this property and its owner, Susan, too highly. McColgan family - London

Highly recommended

We stayed at Maison Fortunat for five nights at the end of October. It is a fantastic location – only five minutes from the citadel or Old Town and about 15 minutes of a pleasant stroll into the lower town or Ville Basse. Maison Fortunat is just off a main road through Carcassonne, making it easy to find. Although off a main road, I cannot say that I noticed the traffic at all during the stay (no heavy trucks seem to go down the road). The house is walled and has a beautiful pool area, but being October we didn’t to make full use of it. The house is relatively modern but retains some lovely touches of rustic French charm. We had a nice size bedroom with ceiling fans and the room was very clean. The kitchen is fully functional with all the amenities one might require. Susan and family were wonderful hosts and very helpful in providing information about Carcassonne and sights to see. Both the Old Town and Ville Basse have plenty to offer a visitor. The Old Town is full of beautiful, narrow, cobbled streets with a wide selection of restaurants and shops; Ville Basse the more modern, working part of Carcassonne with some lovely town squares, shops, bars, restaurants and right beside the train station (for a day trip to Toulouse, Narbonne, etc.) and the UNESCO Canal du Midi. In short: a wonderful stay, in a lovely house with charming hosts. Highly recommended.

Very Relaxing

Thanks again to Susan who's just the best lively and cheery owner ever. Susan made us feel right at home, she had cold beers in the double size American style fridge waiting for us and a very well equipped kitchen. She also got some new couches in while we were there. The property comfortably sleeps 6 and there are pull out couches if more guests arrive. The ceilings are nice and high and all rooms have ceiling fans. The pool is the Jewel and she's been busy revamping that whole area with new decking and BQ area, just fab. There's a road that runs along the pool wall and within 5 minutes of walking on there you reach the old town. The location is very good if you want to stroll up to the old town for a plate or a drink. The interior of the house is a little outdated but that carries with it a certain French charm if you let your mood take you there. There are so many nice places to visit and eat near this area that it would be impossible to list them all. Make sure to also visit a few of the vineyards nearby, you won't regret it. In fact you will not be let down by Susan or this property. See you next year fingers crossed.

Large family villa with private pool

We stayed in this villa for 2 weeks in September and had various family members arriving and departing at different times. Susan and Matt made us feel very welcome and were very helpful providing transport to and from the airport for all our visitors. Although their home was attached they were very discreet and if we needed anything we just had to ask. Susan gave us advice on travel and good restaurants in the area. The villa had everything you could need and Susan had left wine and beers in fridge for when we arrived . The villa is close to Carcassone Old Town which has many restaurants and gift shops, there is a wonderful bakery a 5 min walk from villa and supermarkets are 10 mins away, we didn't hire a car as Carcassonne has great train links, to Toulouse, Narbonne and we even visited Barcelona for 2 days. We would stay in this villa again.

Photo d’annonce ancienne. Réelle déception malgré une propriétaire sympathique.

About the host

Hosted by Susan SINHA

Host profile image
I left Ireland with just a suitcase and a vague dream of the perfect life in France in 2005 and never got any further than my first stop, the beautiful Carcassonne. I had ditched my "real job" as a journalist and editor in Dublin and instead got a job as a waitress in a restaurant in Carcassonne's fairytale castle. My French improved fast and I next got a job at the local Irish pub.
I returned to journalism in 2007 with an editing job in Castres, where I met my UK-born husband Matt, and we married in Carcassonne in 2010. We now have two beautiful bi-lingual children, Oscar born in 2012 and Céleste born in 2015. With an Irish business partner, I set up a new Irish bar, The Celt, in 2008 and, in January 2015, my husband and I bought and launched Maison Fortunat, our family's home and holiday rental business.
Maison Fortunat is under continual redecoration. We will update the photos as the redecoration progresses (it may look even better than you expect when you arrive). We look forward to welcoming you to Carcassonne, a town we know very well.

Why they chose this property

After 12 years living in Carcassone and surrounds, we know it is the town for us. It proximity to beaches and ski resorts, big cities (Montpellier, Toulouse, Barcelona, Andorra...) and quaint French villages (Lagrasse, Minerve...) make it the ideal spring board from which to explore the region. And, there is plenty to do in Carcassonne itself, with its ancient walled town and castle, its lake and canal amenities, and its myriad boutique shops. This house provided the opportunity to share all that with guests and provide our family with a home and business in one.

What makes this property unique

The house is a walled villa with a large swimming pool. Its charm lies in its location, right in Carcassonne town itself, within view of the castle's turrets and only 15 mins walk or a short hop on a bus to the town centre. It is a large house which allows us to create a family home and a separate holiday rental business on the same property. So, we will be present to help you with any enquiries during your stay, but will remain well out of sight should you prefer your privacy.
