About this property

Tranquil old Devonshire country house in stunning position next to Dartmoor

Coryton House is a lovely Grade II house in west Devon, very close to Dartmoor National Park. It is an ideal place for a friends reunion or family celebration, with enough space for personal privacy but great opportunities for enjoying being together.

We also have excellent Wifi internet with a downloading speed of around 40 Mbps and upload of over 10 Mbps. So if you need to get some work done or play games, it should be easy.

The House is south facing and built on the side of a gentle slope with terraced gardens and woodland above and overlooking sheep filled fields across the Lyd Valley below. This is an exceptionally peaceful and beautiful valley, hidden away from the tourist traffic and the world in general. The north and south Devon and Cornwall beaches are just over 20 miles away and can be reached in under an hour. The market towns of Tavistock, Okehampton, and Launceston are close by and have excellent butchers, bakers, fishmongers, greengrocers - plus all the usual supermarkets. Waitrose and Tescos, and many others, deliver straight to the house.

The house has fine antique furniture, paintings and original features (leaded mullioned windows and fireplaces) which suit its style and age. The studded front door has a bell pull and huge bolts. Inside the door is a stone flagged entrance hall with space for walking sticks and dog beds: and there is a large loo with a splendid view (and no need to take off your walking boots!). The Dining Hall is a marvellous place for gathering friends and family together: it is 40' long with a large dining table at one end, and dining chairs with tapestry seats sewn by my great great grandmother. The open fire has comfy seating around large Knole sofas and deep armchairs. The lighting includes two large chandeliers, and lots of more subtle side lights, all reflected in huge mirrors. It has wooden parquet flooring, and a long window seat catches the afternoon sun. Two doors and a hatch lead from the dining room to the slate flagged kitchen with its 4 oven AGA, electric cooker (oven, grill and hob), double Belfast sinks (both big enough for large AGA pans), two dishwashers, and a large fridge The kitchen table seats 10 comfortably. In the pantry next door there is another large fridge, an under counter deep freeze, more storage space, and a table for preparing drinks etc.

The large south facing sitting room has a wood burning stove, lots of comfy seating, a desk, and a huge leaded window with long window seat (and gloriously warm radiator underneath!). The big bookcase has a range of books including local guides and maps, board games, playing cards, and jigsaw puzzles.

The south facing terrace is sheltered from the wind and has expansive views, with a large table and plenty of chairs: we have eaten outside every month of the year. It is also a fabulous spot for star watching with pretty much no other light to spoil your view. The garden and woodland are full of camellias, snowdrops, bluebells, wild garlic, and hydrangeas. In the summer the swallows twist and turn around the garden and at night the bats take over. The owls hoot all year long and, quite often, all day long.

The house has 4 attractive double bedrooms on the first floor, all en suite (one super-king double bed can be turned into twins). On the top floor there are another 4 bedrooms: 2 double (one of which is a super-king that be turned into twins), 1 x 3 bedded 'dorm', and 1 single bedroom, and 2 bathrooms. This means that every bedroom either has its own en suite bathroom, or is immediately next door to a bathroom. There are two cloakrooms on the ground floor. Lots of coat hooks and boot space by the back door.

There is a washing machine and a tumble drier in the back corridor.

Up to two well behaved dogs are very welcome. There is space for dog beds and crates. We ask they they do not go onto furniture or upstairs and are not left alone in the house unless in a dog crate.

Most of the garden is entirely yours. You can walk up the drive and then wander along the woodland path to a sunny glade where, if you look very carefully, you can see Brentor Church on the horizon. There is a path back down to the drive, or you can carry on along the 'Vicar's Walk' and either drop down the steep steps into the upper garden, or continue along the Walk until it leads you down to the Kitchen Garden. If you want to visit the church, go through the metal gate and on a short way down the road. Or you can return through the Kitchen Garden, to the upper garden and take the steps down towards the kitchen and back door. Note: these steps are very slippery when wet so hang on to the hand rail! Please help yourself to the herbs by these steps: sage, rosemary, thyme, and mint.

Stunning setting for your traditional house party

What a superb property for our party of friends and family which was a follow-on from my son and now daughter-in-laws wedding. Aged from 8 months to 60 ah-hem-ish, we all felt very welcome and well catered-for. The house was warm, supremely comfortable and extremely well equipped. The towels were large, the tea mugs generous, the glasses cupboard quite the best I have seen and the views expansive. Despite clearly being a family home with some history a very relaxed atmosphere prevails. The towels were large, the tea mugs copious

Fabulous Family Stay

We ranged from 10-86 and everyone loved this property. We were four family groups (all related!) and there was plenty of room for privacy and partying! Fantastically well equipped kitchen, glorious grounds for playing and relaxing. Lots to do in the area. And with the 7 kids on the top floor we got plenty of space to rest and relax when needed.

A treat to stay in this comfortable, historic, country house

We needed to find a house for three generations ranging in age form 6 to 70. This house fulfilled the brief and was within our budget. Located in a rural valley, the house and sunny terrace provide stunning far reaching views. The house is very well appointed including a vast dining table so we could enjoy meals together. The kitchen is very well appointed with every conceivable need catered for (although a good coffee machine would have been a bonus). Bedrooms all spacious, beds very comfortable most have large en suite bathrooms but worth noting that only one has a freestanding shower. Jane, our host, was on hand to help if needed. We found the Wi-Fi only worked downstairs and the only TV (located in the kitchen) didn’t work but these factors didn’t affect our stay but might for others.

Wonderful stay - will look to stay again if chance arises

My family and I stayed here for 7 nights. There are sixteen of us, ranging from 3yr old to 50yr old. The house is beautiful and very much in keeping with the countryside and the surrounding. My wife kept saying how it reminded her of being in a Jane Austen novel! Rooms was large and spacious. We had everything that we needed including towels. Our favourite room was the sitting room which had to large book shelf and overlooked the fields. Somethings that might be considered as enhancements (minor quibbles from our end): - broadband is strong downstairs and in certain parts upstairs but broadband extenders should be considered to ensure all rooms are covered - there is one shower room and whilst this was clear in the description, I think it’d be great if further shower rooms are built if possible. The bathrooms are large enough to cater - the tv wasn’t working during our stay. Again, this was made very clear and whilst I don’t watch much television, I think it’d be good to have that working so that it is an option for those that want to spend time watching it in the evenings.

Marvellous and stunning property ideally positioned in idyllic countryside

An excellent property for our large and extended family. Beautiful location and views. Walk through the private woods to Coryton Church is recommended as is a visit to the stream at the bottom of the sheep fields. Thank you so much Jane; a memory making experience of the highest order

Group short - stay at Coryton House

A lovely property with great views in a secluded area. Rooms good sizes, and plenty of space to accommodate all 14 adults in the party. We had 4 nights in the property. Good Kitchen equipment and ample storage. Lovely large bath sheets were provided.. Comfy beds with warm duvets and excellent pillows- often a big let down in many lettings. Just two negatives : the agar kept going out so it proved a bit colder than it should have been and made cooking a challenge. The bathrooms were well sized but all the baths should have had shower attachments instead of just the 1st floor ones. Only one proper shower in the whole house. The House owners were very pleasant and accommodating. In cold weather conditions visitors should be warned to bring their own extra wood. Lydford Gorge is well worth a visit. A lovely house to stay in.

Perfect!

An ideal house for a gathering of either friends or family. Idyllic setting, beautiful sunsets and views, hugely spacious and comfortable rooms (absolutely perfect for our 1930s murder mystery dinner party). Everything was very clean. Communication with the owner prior to arrival was brilliant and all efforts were made to be as helpful and welcoming as possible. Highly recommended!

Beautiful house and location

This old rectory was fabulous for our family get together to celebrate our ruby anniversary. It is spacious, comfortable and full of character. The kitchen is well equipped, just great for the chefs in the family, and the bedrooms large. The setting is beautiful and so quiet. Highlight for the two year old was the bat that flew in and joined us over dinner! Thank you Jane for your welcome and help.

High standards promised and delivered

The rooms on the ground floor - dining room, kitchen and lounge were very well equipped; the first floor bedrooms and bathrooms were excellent (though more modern showers would have been good to have); and the 'servants quarters on the second floor were also very good. Great view and even the lack of a working TV was a strange bonus. Well-located for visiting interesting tourist spots.

Elegant home in beautiful surroundings

The house is beautiful, full of excellent pictures, furniture and books. The main bedrooms are huge suites and extremely comfortable. On the top floor, the attic rooms also had comfortable beds. The property was exceptionally well equipped, the kitchen suitable even for very keen cooks, and easily accommodated a group of 14. Coryton House feels like a loved, family home and, despite mixed weather, many games were played and enjoyable walks were taken around Dartmoor and the surrounding area. Jane was a welcoming and helpful host, even coping with our slight confusion over the arrangements with rubbish collection.

wonderful family gathering

We had a very memorable, wonderful stay at Coryton House - 7 adults and 7 children - celebrating a very special birthday. A very unique and characterful house with lovely attention to detail and with enough space for everyone to cook and share lovely family dinners and lots of games to play indoors and out and amazing places to visit locally for those of aged 10 to 80! Jane was very helpful throughout with any questions including advice on an amazing river to swim in and we even had our dog with us which was brilliant. An awesome place to stay in amazing countryside and a very helpful host. We highly recommend it.

Lovely half-term break

Coryton House is enchanting, very different from other houses where we've stayed. Great for large groups, lots to explore for children. We were happy and comfortable. A few little issues that should be sorted. The flies should have been hoovered up before our arrival. The 3rd floor could have done with a good airing out. Cobwebs were prominent on light fittings. Fire grates should have been cleared of ash. Most importantly, the large dishwasher needs replacing/repairing. The detergent holder does not open during the cycle. Whoever emptied the machine before our arrival did not check the cleanliness of crockery and cutlery. There was a sinkful to handwash on Saturday. We did have a lovely time and thank you Jane, Lipstick and Boris!!!

Beautiful house in a stunning location

As a group of twelve on a walking holiday this was perfect for us. The kitchen was well equipped and a great sociable space. We ate each evening in the grand dining room which was lovely. The only issue for us was the - at times - non existent wifi; with twelve people many of struggled to get wifi at all which was frustrating but we had been made aware that it was 'rural wifi'! Jane was on tap to help with any queries and it was such a lovely spacious house, with wonderful furniture and personal touches. Many thanks for a great stay!

A lovely and welcoming grand old house with a great atmosphere and which was perfect for our Easter family gathering. Quiet and elegant certainly describe this beautiful house. A real sense of size and grandeur makes staying here a very special occasion . We were a family 80th birthday weekend and the pro poetry could not have been better suited. Huge dining and sitting areas, well equipped kitchen, splendid bedrooms meant nothing was found wanting. We moved from Oxfordshire to Devon in 2014 having fallen in love with Dartmoor. I had worked in Oxford University for more than 30 years and it was the perfect time to move to somewhere at least as gorgeous.

Why they chose this property

Coming down the drive just felt wonderful with the view opening up all the way, and then we walked into the Hall and we went 'Wow'! Having the sitting room and lots of bedrooms looking out across the valley is fabulous. And the kitchen is great for working in - and plenty of space for relaxing and and chatting with children and friends while cooking. No-one gets underfoot.

What makes this property unique

We love having so much space: you can really stretch your legs without even going outside! The dining table in such a large room works really well. Living on the side of a valley means wherever you are walking outside the view is constantly changing. Having Dartmoor close by draws us out most days and we always appreciate it - rain or shine.
