Quirky cottage for two near coastal footpath at Borth y Gest
A beautifully renovated cottage close to the coastal path and villages of Borth y Gest and Morfa Bychan. The cottage dates from the 1700's and used to be the out kitchen to the farmhouse where the owners live.
The cottage has been lovingly restored and updated to provide a high level of comfort and style.
Steps lead down to the cottage which has a stable door. The ground floor of the cottage is open plan and comprises the kitchen and sitting area. It is small and cosy and perfect for a couple. The cottage has a fully fitted kitchen with microwave and electric cooker. The kitchen area has a small breakfast bar and stools. The room opens out into the sitting area which has a comfy sofa, TV and small table. The original inglenook fireplace with bread oven has been preserved and now has a wood burning stove with a supply of logs for colder evenings. The separate bathroom has an electric shower, basin and WC.
Rising from the sitting area is an oak and glass staircase which leads up to the mezzanine bedroom which is simply furnished with a king size low bed with cotton bedlinen and feather duvet and pillows. As the bedroom is in the eaves of the cottage there is limited headroom as the ceiling is sloping.

Stunning little cottage - perfect for our 3 night break. Great location with easy access to coastal path and stunning beaches from the door. Lovely and warm with everything we needed - appreciated the remote control blinds on the ceiling velux windows helping towards a good nights sleep with just the sound of the owls (and rain on the roof - it is Wales!) We hope to return
Wonderfully restored 17th century Cegin that has everything you could possibly need for a relaxed peaceful break. The coastal footpaths are a delight to explore, through woodland to stunning beaches and much more ... Other delights are not far away if you feel the need, take your time and enjoy the unspoilt.
My four night stay was blessed with amazing weather but even without that I regret not staying longer. There is so much to do in this wonderful corner of Wales and the cottage was the perfect retreat after a long day. It was cosy yet spacious and had everything I needed for my stay. The proximity of the beach was an added bonus - watching the sunsets there was mesmerizing. Highly, highly recommended!
This is the second time we’ve stayed at this cottage. We love the location / area - plenty of amazing walks - stunning scenery.
The cottage is well equipped and perfect for our little ‘get away’ - we will certainly come back again - in fact we plan on making it an annual event
We've had a wonderful week, gorgeous comfortable cottage with everything we needed. Beautiful beaches only a short walk away along the coastal path.
Enjoyed trips to Pwllheli, Cricceith, Portmeirion, Porthmadog and a lovely trip on a steam train on Welsh Highlands railway to Ffestiniog, fantastic. Very helpful host, clean, cosy and comfortable cottage, would love to stay again.
Cottage was very clean and had everything needed for a break away. Nice and quiet. Within short driving distance of nearest amenities. Would recommend if looking for a quiet getaway.
This quirky cottage is exactly as advertised - it was a pleasure to stay, had everything we needed.
Easy nearby walks, great base for exploring and a cosy welcome after a soggy day.
Lovely slightly different property. Perfect location for exploring the area. Walks to the beaches from the cottage. Ownershad thought of everything. Definitely recommended. Electric car charger a bonus.
Hen Gegin is incredibly quaint but at the same time is totally equipped with all mod cons. A brilliant bathroom with walk in shower, a nice comfy big warm bed, well equipped usable kitchen area all topped off with the fireplace and sitting area with everything kitted out with good quality furniture and fittings. It is very close to the main house but nevertheless is still very private. It is around 15 minutes walking to the nearest beach and they are all beautifully picturesque. The area is very quiet at this time of the year (Halloween) with the closest pub being closed so Hen Gegin needed to be our base and entertainment venue. It excelled at doing this.
We've just had the most gorgeous long weekend at Hen Gegin. I really couldn't recommend the place enough. Super cosy, extremely comfortable, and Branwen had thought of everything down to the last detail!
The location is also to die for. We're not seasoned walkers, but went on 4 or 5 easy short walks to Porthmadog, Borth y Gest, Criccieth, and the surrounding areas straight from the cottage. We found lovely instructions and recommendations for these all inside the welcome pack and on the bookshelf. They were so beautiful and really enjoyable despite seeing all 4 seasons in one afternoon.
We also found the food recommendations so helpful and had a couple of really delicious meals out.
The biggest thank you once again for a lovely escape. Back to the chaos now!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Modern and clean with excellent facilities and plenty of charm. We enjoyed the outside seating area. Excellent wi fi. A fantastic trip on the
Snowdonia Mountain Railway. We had a wonderful stay.
Spent a week at Branwen & Paul’s amazing cottage. Communication between me and Branwen prior to and during our stay was perfect. Beautiful setting. Beautiful location. Close to many major attractions, such as Caernarfon and Harlech Castles, Welsh Highland and Snowdon Railways, Portmeirion, countless gorgeous, quiet, unspoilt beaches. Coastal walks. Excellent places for eating out. Never a dull moment. Thank you for a truly memorable stay
We loved our stay at the cottage. It was larger than we expected, the photos on the web do not do it justice.Very well laid out. Everything we needed. So very peaceful. We were worried about the near by caravan site but it was extremely quiet, exclusive and unless you go up the lane further you would not know it was there. The cottage is detached and has a lovely little terrace to sit out on, we had a fire and BBQ. The coastal path was amazing. We spent many times on the local beaches. All just a few minutes away. Some of the paths are quite steep we were told there are more gradual ones but we enjoyed adventuring through, stunning views. The beaches were all very quiet. Often we were the only ones there. We love Wales and this was a fantastic location to expore. The cottage was so comfortable and private that we spent a lot of time just staying there. Loved seeing the rabbits playing in the evenings and the owls at night. It was a perfect get away and the hosts were fantastic, a balance of being there to ask any questions and respecting our privacy. I could not recommend the cottage more, excellent all round. Thank you for letting us stay in such a perfect cottage
Wonderful quirky cottage in a superb location. The interior is beautiful, the cottage is well equipped for every comfort. Absolutely perfect for our needs.
As promised, the host totally respected our privacy, but were there if needed.
Lovely clean and cosy cottage just right at this time of year.In a lovely spot in an outstanding area .Really enjoyed our stay here. And look forward to returning.
The cottage was spotless when we arrived. It was delightful. Small but had everything we needed. And a lovely private garden to sit in and enjoy the peace.
Location just perfect. We walked to all the local beaches which were deserted, and beautiful.
So much to do we intend to go back in September.
We are a couple in our fifties who decided to go into the holiday cottage business when our daughters left home. After the success of our other property, Ffermdy Bach we decided to renovate our outbuilding which we started in 2017. We have finished this year (2018) and look forward to welcoming guests.
Why they chose this property
The location is what sets this property apart. If you love to walk down to the beach in 5 minutes and enjoy the beauty of Wales you'll love Hen Gegin. It's the combination of sea and mountains that makes our area so special, with so much to explore and enjoy.
What makes this property unique
Hen Gegin is the original out kitchen to the main Farmhouse and the property was once lived in by Dafydd y Garreg Wen (1711-1741) a renowned Welsh composer and harpist. The beautiful coastal farmland was sold in the 1960's.
