Beautiful cottage in a great location

Bicocche is a beautiful stone cottage located high up on a hillside 20 mins from Lucca. We were greeted by the Sonia and her aunt Giuliana who were lovely and made us feel at home providing us with fresh veg, wine, and olive oil. The cottage is of high standard, spacious, and well equipped. The gardens and pool are fantastic, lovely smells, views, colour, well maintained, sizeable, and peace-ful. The outdoor pizza oven and bbq were great. Overall the cottage was a dream and one of the best we have ever stayed in, would get 5 out. We’ll be back soon!

a charming retreat and warm owners

Dear Mrs Sonia, many thanks for all of your hospitality. We all agreed you made the trip very special for us. From the wine you had waiting on our arrival to Mario with the olive oil on the last day and, in between, the pastries, the maps, the dinner suggestions, the pizzas and the roasted chickens. We truly enjoyed the week we spent in your beautiful villa.

Beautiful old world charm, very typically Tuscan.

The property was very old world charm, impeccably decorated and very clean. The garden and grounds were beautifully maintained and the swimming pool was wonderful. The whole of the property was delightful, as were the owners Mario and his wife , who though on site kept themselves to themselves and allowed us to enjoy ourselves uninterrupted. The property is well situated for day trips to Florence, Pisa, Lucca , all of which were fabulous. And locally the ancient town of Camaiore had everything we needed. The only down side of the holiday was the noise from the barking dogs in properties nearby, but once you accept that and enjoy the bird song there was no problem. The high light of the holiday was an open air concert in nearby Viareggio featuring Andrea Botcelli at the Puccini festival . A perfect end to a lovely Italian holiday.

A delightful stay

Villa Bicocche is situated on a Tuscan hillside with gorgeous views. We had one of our best holidays here with two other couples. The villa is spacious and intriguing. The pizza oven was a huge hit. One evening we had a delicious dinner prepared by a local chef. My best memory is drinking wine on the veranda while listening to the music from the village festival. Fantastic - highly recommend!

paradise on earth

We spent a wonderful week in Sonia's Bicocche Farmhouse. It's in a beautiful area of Tuscany only a short way from Lucca and from the Beaches of lido Di Camaiore, Forte dei Marmi, Viareggio and the breathtaking Cinque Terre with other places such as Pisa, Florence, San Gimignano and Volterra as well as the villages of the Chianti region all within an hour or so's drive. Whilst the villa is in a quiet, unspoilt rural area, access to major roads is quick and easy which all adds to the ease with which you can explore this part of Tuscany. The villa is spacious and intimate. It is well equipped and has a real sense of character about it. It lies in lovely grounds with pool garden surrounded by the quietness that everyone needs to recover after a busy year. The outlook is across meadows and olive groves which we loved. We particularly enjoyed watching hoopoes feeding on the grass and redstarts nest building in the trees! It’s lovely to have a car to have daily trips (or at least to drive to the train station in 10-15 mins) while Camaiore and the close by Montemagno, the villages in which the villa lies, are lovely villages with several facilities and the nearest shops/supermarkets and restaurants if you want to eat out are within 5 mins driving. There is a bus at the top of the road for Lucca, but once again a car is far more convenient. In summary, the description you read of the property is accurate. It is clean and has the real sense of an old stone house. Sonia and Cristina were extremely welcoming and helpful and we would certainly recommend the property to friends and family. It would be very hard to find anything negative to say about it. We certainly anticipate returning at some time ourselves to continue our exploration and appreciation of this fascinating part of Tuscany. Thanks Sonia for your impressive customer care. You have been wonderful.

False and misleading description to lure families to stay at this villa.

This villa was booked through the HomeAway site because in the title it states, categorically, that it is ... air conditioned ... IT IS NOT. The three bedrooms have air conditioning units but we were told, forcefully, by Mario who lives on the second floor that we would have to pay extra for any use of the units. They had remote controls to operate them but they were nowhere to be seen. I assume that Mario kept them and then monitored their usage. We paid a considerable amount to stay here and that money was taken from us under false pretences. Secondly, it states "The villa is immersed in the greenery and peace that the Tuscan countryside is famous for". You would not believe the amount of background noise for a considerable part of the time we were there. The villa is surrounded by hills and they have the effect of magnifying any noises as they occur. When I was resting by the pool I was able to note the following: dogs, constant barking from all directions. When one stopped another started, I never want to hear another dog bark again! The nearby main road to Lucca climbs a steep hill which can be seen from the villa and we had great views of the villa when we went up the same road. Motorbikes and cars with loud exhausts loved going up the hill making as much noise as possible. Then there are the lorries and buses grinding up the hill or coming down, blasting their horns at every corner. Add to that the locals with their strimmers and other farm and garden equipment and you have a recipe for a constant headache. My son had his window open all night because it was so hot and he said that he was woken up by dogs barking in the middle of the night. Thirdly, the advertisement for the villa states that Sonia's aunt lives in the "detached" attic with an outside staircase. In fact, the stairs inside the house also go straight up to the second floor where the aunt and her husband Mario live. At any point they have complete and total access to the whole hose and there are no locks on the bedroom doors. This is a serious security issue as you are sharing the house with two strangers who could, if they wished, wander around the house at any time of day or night. It also meant that we could hear their television blasting out whenever it was on and their footsteps when they walked around upstairs. Both Wednesdays they were up early and I was woken by them walking around over my head. THIS DESCRIPTION IS DECEITFUL AND SHOULD BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY.

Stunning rural villa with everything you need for a tranquil quality break

The villa is about a 45 minute drive from Pisa airport and is on a rural single track road at the start of the hills in Tuscany. The turn into the driveway is tight but it is worth the effort. Everything you need is here for a peaceful, beautiful stay. The villa is traditional Tuscan in style set in beautiful gardens with several great outdoor spaces to relax, entertain, dine and read. The pool area is a 50 metre walk on gravel paths and is completely private. The seating comes with comfortable cushions and parasols. Also outside was a lovely brick BBQ and in the morning it was magically cleaned by the time we woke up to tackle the task! The accommodation is very well decorated and every room is furnished with dark wood statement pieces that were of great quality. It felt like a proper family home. Outside there is comfortable garden furniture for relaxing and listening to birds, frogs, cicadas and watching the fireflies come alive every night. Mario and his lovely wife were perfect hosts and we hardly saw them at all but we knew if we needed any help we could contact them On the top floor of this large house. They were very welcoming and as we didn't speak italian and they didn't speak english, our online translator worked really well on our phones! The wifi is really good all over the house and grounds. Loved staying here and finding the local restaurants up the hill and travelling on the train to Florence (€8 each way and 79 minutes) , driving into Lucca and discovering the beach that was only ten minutes away Lido de Camaiore. It is quiet and tranquil and you do need a car but we wouldn't have changed a thing. Thank you for a lovely break and we hope to see you again. The Cross Family of five adults.

RELAXING NATURE & HISTORY

Thank you to Sonia, Mario and Juliana for making us feel so welcome and making our stay absolutely incredible! The Villa was even more amazing than the pictures show, it totally took our breath away! We spent the first 10mins whilst being showed around just saying WOW! It was like a high end boutique hotel, with stunning views, and hosts ready to answer any questions and help in every way. The villa is a short dive into the centre of Lucca and from the beach, which is full of wonderful restaurants. We spent a day walking the city walls, exploring the cathedral and its cript and taking the views of the city from the top of the bell tower. We also took a train to Florence for the day, trains were easy to catch and very very cheap in comparison to the UK! And the city was beautiful an absolute must see! The icing on the cake was the special breakfast Juliana prepared for us on our final morning. It really finished our stay perfectly and was so thoughtful. I could not have wished for a better weekend away celebrating my Boyfriends birthday! An area really worth visiting, especially if you book this flat! I can't wait to arrange coming back in the summer months! Thanks again!

Beth and I spent a week in arguably one of the most beautiful places on earth, Lucca, Italy. More specifically Villa Bicocche ... All I can say is the pictures on the website do NOT do it justice. We had a glorious week - a perfect vacation… I am sorry it took a long time to submit my review.. it’s almost time to write my second review after my next stay next April. Can’t wait to be back! I love Villa Bicocche

There is no doubt in the over 25 years of traveling for business and for vacations, that no experience matches the comfort and care of Villa Bicocche. The 2016 Olive Harvest was our 4th trip to the Villa and each one provided vivid and lasting memories. The Villa feels like home, the amenities on every floor, in every room are just what you need to make it a relaxing stay. From cool summer nights on the Patio and Pergola to great fall fires, there is always a place to feel comfortable. Your surrounded by the aroma of every season from the spring plantings to the fall harvest, your senses will be alive with the rhythm of the classic Tuscan experience. From walks through the historic countryside to visits to the local towns, everything we needed was within a short walk or drive. Then there is Sonia and her uncle Mario and her aunt Juliana. No better hosts, period. You just have to take that leap of faith as we did and make this trip, it most likely wont be your last

I met the most welcoming owners!

We had the most amazing time staying with Sonia and her family. They were the most welcoming people. Made us feel at home and what a home it is! The decoration of the Villa is beautiful with extreme attention to detail. It is set in rural paradise on the outskirts of Lucca, a picturesque town with plenty to see. Within easy driving distance of Pisa, Florence and even the coast (10 mins by car) it is a perfect place to both explore and relax. Everything was perfect, especially the hospitality of such a lovely family, and their cheeky pet tortoise!

Enchanting escape close to the beach

Thank you so much for possibly the best time in my life. I have "withdrawal" or whatever you want to call it. I'm still constantly thinking about Italy, the Villa, the surroundings, etc. And I do want to return in the Fall of 2017. I need to talk with some friends to find out if they will commit… I will keep checking the availability of the Villa and talk with my friends… (do you need a cleaning lady? maybe that is my calling to return to Italy!!!)… I truly left my heart there…

a dream come true

This was our third visit to Villa Bicocche and, each time, we are further captivated by the serenity and comfort of this wonderful Tuscany gem. The house is spacious yet cozy and is beautifully furnished with all the amenities one could possibly need to enjoy a wonderful Italian holiday. The views of the valley from the house are stunning and there are marvelous places to explore on foot, bicycle or auto in the surrounding hillsides. Our host, Sonia and her aunt Juliana has always gone above and beyond in making us feel right at home and provided much welcomed assistance in suggesting day trips and delicious local restaurants to visit. He also organized a fabulous "pizza night" by firing up Villa Bicocche original brick oven and letting us prepare our own delicious pies. A unique Italian experience! For those who love to cook, the kitchen is well equipped and a large grocery store (Esselunga) is a 10 minute ride by car. Closer to the house in the village of Camaiore is a fabulous butcher shop, bakery and delicious coffee bar, all places not to be missed! If you have the opportunity, plan your visit during the olive harvest. We had the pleasure of joining this centuries old tradition which included spreading the nets and "raking" the olive trees to capture the abundant fruit. The weather was superb and views across the hillsides (and our occasional wine and cheese breaks!)rejuvenated us as we moved from tree to tree. Sonia then welcomed us to join her at the olive mill and witness the tranformation into oil. With warm bread in hand, we watched the olives churn through production and patiently waited for the delicious oil to pore from the spout. What a unique and fabulous way to experience Italian traditions and an experience that we will never forget! We hope to be back many times more! Anne guest 2013, 2015 and 2016

Lovely pool, garden, well equipped house - but check-in poor

First the positives. This is a pretty stone house, set in a beautiful garden with stunning views of surrounding hills, and several outdoor seating areas, including a shady terrace and seats on the lawn. Kitchen and dining room well equipped, pretty bedrooms with antique furniture, nice views. The pool is a bit of a walk from the house, so remember everything you want to take with you (and the owners like the house and pool kept locked when not occupied, so there is a bit of faff with keys etc), but once there it is lovely, with cushioned wicker pool beds, nice paving, roman steps into the pool, which is large and beautifully maintained. Giuliana and Mario, who live in an apartment upstairs, were extremely kind and hospitable, presenting us with a bottle of wine and a home-made tiramisu. If you want total privacy this might not be the house for you, as although they have their own entrance they were around occasionally in the garden, but did their best not to be intrusive and to make us feel welcome. As the main house has been their own home at one point, there are some things which are not typical of a rural Tuscan holiday home, including carpets upstairs (never had that before), lots of ornaments and pictures, ample kitchen equipment, and a quite elaborate bathroom. The main downside was check-in. Knowing we'd already be in Italy from Friday, we tried a few times before departure to arrange check-in as early as possible on the Saturday. As well as helping us, we thought it might help Cristina get us done so she could focus on others arriving later in the day, but we never got a reply. So we rang early on the Satuday; after some difficulty getting a reply she said the earliest available appointment to meet near Lucca was 6pm, which would have meant not getting to the house till 7pm or so. We felt this was unacceptable, and said we would make our own way to the house (which one of us did by using google earth to find it - no directions were given) and Mario kindly met us on arrival. Cristina arrived later; she was obviously trying to do too many check-ins on one day and was just not coping. In an era of satnav it really should not be difficult to give people directions to go directly to the house and if necessary leave a key, and then arrive at leisure to do the passports etc. Indeed, this is what we have experienced the last few years in Italy at other houses. Meeting at a Macdonalds is unnecessary and wastes everyone's time. It was a bad start.

Villa Le Bicocche in Lucca

We took our 2 adult children and their "others" on a one week trip to Italy, using Villa Le Bicocche as our base. Six people is a lot of people to please, but everyone one of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The villa was large enough that each of us could carve out private, quiet space no matter what other activities were going on. The pool is not only beautiful, it is a requirement in the hear of the warm fall season, and we spent hours laughing and having our own "summer olympics" in the water. The location is excellent - the views superb - and only a short drive to the train station for very speedy journeys to Pisa and Florence; or drives into the alps. We had a chef come and give us a cooking class...which was superb! Thank you, Sonia, Cristina and to Mrs Juliana, for helping us plan and enjoy this trip.

Enchanting corner of Tuscany

It took one year to plan a two week vacation for six people. However, I wish it took two weeks of planning for a one year vacation instead! Staying at Villa Bicocche was a dream come true. It was certainly a vacation that will never be duplicated or forgotten. Sonia is the ultimate innkeeper. We can't thank her enough for all that she did for us and our families. She certainly added in making our stay so unique. We were greeted at the Villa by Sonia’s aunt (lovely old lady Mrs Juliana) with fresh baked bread, homemade olive oil, fresh flowers and a warm smile. This welcome set the pace for the next 2 weeks. We felt as if we were the very first guests ever to stay at the house. Upon entering the villa this five hundred year old farmhouse is jaw-dropping. Its location sits high above the village of Lucca, not far from Camaiore and has outstanding vistas all throughout the day. We happened to have a full moon while we were there and it was spectacular. The grounds surrounding the farmhouse are impeccably kept; olive trees, oranges, wisteria, luxury pool, ancient ruins, to mention a few. My mind and my thoughts are forever going back to the pizza making party, the trip to the blacksmith, the wonderful meal prepared by Christina, the wine from the hardware store and the warm hospitality we all received from Juliana. I hope I will be blessed again with a return trip some time soon... I recently heard from my cousin in NY that her sister has reserved the villa for next spring ........ all I can say is "I wish it were me". May the desires of your heart be fulfilled.

40th wedding anniversary at Bicocche

From the hilly roads until the moment you pass through the gates of the villa, you are transported to another world. We were three generations sharing the villa as we celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. Each of us walked away with the most vivid memories - the vistas, the cup of espresso enjoyed while sitting on the patio, and of course, "pizza night" using the ancient, outdoor pizza oven (Cristina was the best pizza chef and instructor)! Sonia made our stay so personal - mapping out the best of the best - we WILL return

Sonia and her amazing family villa

Upon arrival at Bicocche all I could say was Wow! The villa was beautiful, way above my expectations. After staying there I came to realize that the beauty was not only in the villa but also in the owners. Sonia and her aunt and uncle (Mrs Juliana and Mr Mario) did everything possible to make our stay in Italy a dream vacation. The villa was clean, homey, and very relaxing. If we had any questions Sonia was never more than a phone call away, literally a phone call, because they even supplied us with a cell phone that we could use to get ahold of them with no matter where we were. Sonia had put together packets of things to do in the area and maps on how to get there. Every one of their suggestions was wonderful. The food was amazing and if you want to go to the local eateries Sonia has great taste and we were never disappointed in their suggestions. They even supplied us our first bottle of authentic Italian wine and chocolates. Some mornings Mrs Juliana would even show up with delicious fresh tomatoes from her garden. The kitchens at the villa had every modern appliance that you would need if you just wanted to stay in and relax. The grounds at the villa were very well kept and gorgeous with flowers and fruit trees everywhere. The pool was very refreshing with a beautiful arbor in which you could just relax and soak in the Italian air. The villa was definitely the best part of the vacation, after a long day sightseeing it was nice to come home to someplace that was stress-free and welcoming.

Such a memory!

If I had known that celebrating my 50th would be this wonderful, I would have looked forward to it long before we booked this villa! Our family of 6 spent the most relaxing week touring the hillsides and panoramic views of Villa Bicocche! It is truly breathtaking just sitting by the pool and drinking some of the local wine from the "hardware store" :) We were intriqued by the history of the villa and the majestic hills and ruins just a short hike away. Sonia and her aunt Mrs Giuliana provided us with wonderful recommendations as far as restaurants, day trips, GPS devices loaded with destinations and beautiful Italian music to fill our days and nights while relaxing at the Villa. My favorite day was visiting Cinque Terre and hiking along the path from seaside town-to-town. One day we just walked to the local store for some cold drinks and spent the afternoon chatting with locals...if you catch the produce truck you'll be in for another treat! Everything about this scenic wonder was just perfect - I don't think Sonia could do anything more to make our vacation such a memory maker for years to come!! We talk amongst ourselves frequently about that trip...and long to go back!!

Lovely countryside retreat

We enjoyed 2 lovely weeks at Le Bicocche in July/August 2012 with our 2 children aged 10 and 8. The property is located just outside the town of Camaiore, on the way to Montemagno. It is within easy reach of Viareggio for the beach (about 15 mins by car) and Lucca (half an hour by car). Florence is around 100km away - the journey takes around one and a half hours by car. The property is situated in extensive, lovely gardens, which Mr Giannini, the owner, keeps immaculate. Mr Giannini was on hand whenever we needed him, though as we hardly speak any Italian and he hardly speaks any English, our opportunity to chat was limited. However, Mr Giannini is charming and I am sure that if you have conversational Italian, he would be a mine of useful information about the area. As it was, he was kind and helpful and pressed some very nice bottles of wine on us when he passed us dining in the garden once or twice. The swimming pool is a little way from the house, and is secluded so is perfectly private. The pool does have a deeper end and a shallower end, though an adult can stand up throughout, so it is not suitable for diving or jumping in. The pool area was kept clean and tidy throughout our stay. There are a few details that are not clear from the property listing. The property available for rental is in fact a self-contained apartment in the loft of the main house; Mr and Mrs Giannini live in the 2 floors below. To access the apartment, you have to go up 3 flights of stairs, which I imagine would be tiresome with a child much younger than age 4. The apartment is cosy and pleasant, though fairly basically equipped. A kettle would be useful, as would a toaster. It was very hot when we were there (25 degrees celsius at night) so we used the air conditioning each night from 10pm-5am. As a result, our electricity costs were 4 times those which had been anticipated prior to our stay, though obviously if you don't use the air conditioning to any significant extent, this is not an issue. Overall we loved our relaxing holiday and it was fantastic to enjoy the attractive gardens and pool, and enjoy tasty, inexpensive meals at the nearby Le Meraviglie and other restaurants.

Thank for having us!

We really enjoyed our week at the Villa Bicocche, the weather was perfect for us, around the mid-20's with most days sunny with just onetwo cloudy and one day with a nit of rain. But we could eat outside every meal thanks to the covered veranda on one side and gazebo on the other. The pool really made the holiday, with several days spent lazing on the sun loungers reading books, and dipping in the pool. The children really enjoyed the pool inflatable toys as well. Mosquito's weren't too bad, but on the last dayso we became more aware of them so taking insect repellent and bite cream is a good idea. If you have young children there is a pond ( with a fence around with gaps in) so that does need keeping an eye on. The house was well equipped with everything we needed, and felt like an authentic Italian family home. Found a lovely local restaurant ( Antico Frantoio ) which was great value, very hospitable and perfect for a family meal with young children.
