Dartmoor escape

This is our second long weekend stay at Chinkwell and once again we had a wonderful time. My kids and I love Dartmoor and we wanted to show the grandparents why we like it so much, it did not disappoint! Chinkwell is the perfect location for walks and exploring Tors including Hound and Haytor. As a family we love bouldering and this is an ideal base. The house has a lovely cosy feel but is spacious at the same time. The lounge/kitchen is a warm sociable space to chill after a day on the moors. The bedrooms are generous in size and perfect for our family. The welcome basket with local gin and beer was a nice surprise on arrival, thank you! Rebekah is really helpful and responds quickly to any questions. Thank you very much for sharing Chinkwell.

Home from Home

Gorgeous barn conversion. Extremely comfortable and cosy. Exceptional views of Dartmoor all around. We had an excellent few days at Chinkwell Tor cottage and felt so at home from the moment we stepped through the door. Very well equipped, warm, super-comfy beds and sofas. Walking routes straight from the cottage. Lovely pubs and cafe in Widecombe close by. Had a lovely time! Thank you.

Perfect rural stay in Dartmoor

Lovely property in a brilliant location in Dartmoor - perfect for a family getaway. The house had plenty of room, and the views of the tors and moors were fantastic. Lots of local walks direct from the door. Really felt like you were in the heart of the moors!

A beautifully situated property in the heart of Dartmoor, but in need of maintenance.

The accommodation was comfortable and well laid out, but the owners need to do a lot of maintenance work. 1. The windows in the main reception room are filthy and the one in the kitchen is absolutely covered in bird muck. 2. A lot of the kitchen crockery needs to be replaced as many mugs are chipped or damaged. 3. The dishwasher door does not open fully, so brute force has to be used to open it far enough to fill it with plates etc. 4. Paint is peeling off the walls in many different rooms in the property such as the hallway and upstairs bathroom. There are holes in the wall beside the bed in the upstairs bedroom that ned to be re-plastered. 5. There are loose pieces of cement / plaster above the door to the reception. Small pieces fell onto us on two occasions, but fortunately did not injure us. The pictures of the outside of the property are extremely misleading as they create the impression that the property stands alone, when in fact it is part of a complex of properties, with several of them for rental. Had we known this, we would not have booked the property, but in the event our stay was peaceful. The picture of the garden area belonging to the property is also misleading and out of date. It should be replaced immediately. The lawned area shown in the picture in the property details belongs to an adjoining property. IT DOES NOT BELONG TO CHINKWELL TOR. Access to the small garden area that does belong to Chinkwell Tor is only accessed via some steep wooden steps - not at all suitable for dogs to negotiate. The property is comfortable and well laid out, but I hope that at the end of the main season, the owners can undertake the essential repairs and maintenance required .

Set in a spectacular setting

Host Bek was brilliant. Kept us informed throughout and had no problems at all from booking with Vrbo.. The property is set In beautiful countryside where animals roam freely. The property is lovely,, however it could be updated in parts. Some areas had been decorated and kitchen cooking utensils/cooking pots etc need updating. For a 5* property the garden was not mowed and sheep droppings everywhere, and some nice garden furniture would of been nice to relax in.. WiFi hit and miss and no signal we found. Other than a few issues the place is lovely and cosy. Beds were excellent with very clean bedding. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would definitely go back as the issues were only minor.

A fantastic place to stay!

The property was absolutely wonderful. It was very spacious and clean. The location was amazing, you felt you were right in the middle of Dartmoor. There were some amazing walks straight from the front door or only twenty minutes away. If it was pouring with rain you would be happy to stay in and just relax. We definitely recommend this property and we will hopefully be visiting again!

Perfect in every way

We had the most fantastic 8 night stay in this beautiful property - wish we had booked 2 weeks. The property was perfect - spotlessly clean with everything you need. The beds were huge and very comfortable. The kitchen/living room area is as perfect for socialising and we loved using the range. The location was great with many walks on your doorstep. Not too far in to Bovey for shopping and the pubs in Widecombe were great for a pint at the end of a long walk. Great communication with the owner and the onsite manager was really helpful. Will definitely be back next year.

A good property for a quiet, sociable stay

Lovely sociable space for a family to enjoy cooking and eating together. We very much enjoyed our stay. The house was clean, well equipped and comfortable. It has a fabulous location for enjoying Dartmoor. We had 4 legged friends with us so it would be great if it were possible to enclose the garden, but we did know that wasn’t the case before we booked. Finding sheep on the lawn was a surprise, though they don’t actually keep it short so it would have benefitted from being mown, and from having some more comfortable outdoor furniture. We had glorious weather and there are stunning views from the house, so being able to enjoy the garden to the max would have been lovely. We also couldn’t access the moor from the back lane because it was so overgrown, though I don’t know if this belongs to the property so there may be nothing that can be done about that. Walking along the drive and out onto the moor from the road provided lovely walks. It would also have been much more comfortable if there was a window that opened in the smaller downstairs bedroom. Again, we were lucky with the weather so the room got very hot and stuffy at night. It’s such a silly thing, but it made sleep quite difficult which is a shame when so much effort has gone into making the room comfortable. Overall, we had a great stay and would book this property again. Some small tweaks and it could be perfect.

Chinkwell Tor

Chinkwell Tor is a holiday cottage, sited on a farm, located a couple of miles off the main road past HayTor. We used it as a base for walking days around Dartmoor, and for this it was perfect. Its a modernised barn style cottage which sleeps 6, is spacious, and a little quirky with lots of beams for the unwary head !!. My head was particularly unwary. At night its dark and silent, just what we were looking for, and on one clear night we saw the milky way, a few meteors and several satellites wiz overhead. Wonderful. The cottage is warm and well equipped, but due to its location the satellite internet had a little latency, but hey, you don't stay at these places to sit on your phone all night do you ??. The ARGA style cooker takes a little getting used to, but we managed and being in the centre of the moor made access to various walks pretty easy. We loved it and hopefully will be returning soon for some winter walking. Michael & Sam

Fabolous hide away, would defintley book again!!

There were 5 adults and 2 large Labradors in our party, the barn was massive so plenty of room for all of us. It also had everything you could think of in the way of facilities, I've never used an Arga before but we soon got the hang of it. The barn was spotless and really comfy beds, 3 very good sized bedrooms and 2 nice bathrooms. We would have found it slightly more comfortable with another 2 seater sofa but it didn't spoil our stay, the only down side for us was we couldn't let the dogs run off their leads due to new born foals in the fields next to the barn so a little fenced off area where the picnic table is would have been great particularly when they wake up early in the morning... having said that the foals and horses were beautiful and a real treat for city dwellers to see. The location couldn't have been better as it's so far off the road making it really peaceful, the scenery was stunning and we had some amazing sunsets. it was also very central so most places were within a short drive. We walked across the moor to Widecobe and had a lovely cream team in the Wayside café which was delicious! My daughter and I also rode out on the moor at the Adventure Clydesdales, a real must for anyone who loves to ride horses! We also walked to Haytor rocks which has amazing views and you can see the barn from up there too. My husband also fished the Fernworthy reservoir which he really enjoyed, about 45 minutes drive. Bovey Tracey had everything you need as did Newton Abbott for a bigger shop. It took about 45 minutes to get to Torquay with so many things to do and see, we appreciated getting back to the tranquillity of the barn. Overall the barn was perfect and wouldn't hesitate to book again. We had a truly fabulous stay!

Comfortable barn conversion in good location

We enjoyed our four night stay here. The accommodation was comfortable and relaxing and in an excellent location for exploring the best of Dartmoor. The open plan living area was spacious enough to accommodate six people easily including our dogs. Cooking on the range was enjoyable, and it kept the building warm and cosy, and provided plenty of hot water. Beds very comfortable. Small seating area outside, but no real garden, so dogs needed to be on a lead at all times due to livestock. Lovely walks on your doorstep.

An enjoyable family stay

We chose this property for its' proximity to a wedding venue without taking into account just how rural the area is. Due to difficulties downloading the homeaway app (which still isn't working) we had to call Rebekah (the owner) for directions as there are a few properties on the estate and it would have been very difficult to find in the dark. Enough said, the home was very clean, warm and met our needs perfectly. It was a joy to walk the Moors which are just at the end of the drive and to be amongst the, sheep, cattle and ponies. The barn has an aga which I haven't used before but it was easy to use and fits well with the property and local pace of life. Ashburton was good for provisions and we drove to different places which were stunning. All in all an enjoyable stay in a nice home and lovely setting.

Fantastic property in a fantastic location

Our party of six had a fantastic long weekend stay in Chinkwell Tor. The property was perfect for us with plenty of space. It was well appointed and kitted out and was both isolated and within reach of a Co-op. As you can see from the picture, there are fantastic views across the moors despite a couple of very foggy mornings. We also recommend the Rugglestone Inn for a cosy evening meal.

Fabulous accommodation, amazing setting

Chinkwell Tor is definitely 5* accommodation. The place is gorgeous, and felt really warm and welcoming, ideally laid out and very comfortable for 6 adults and a dog. The whole place feels really spacious and was lovely and clean on arrival. The beds were to die for, so comfy and the Aga was great fun to cook on! Didn’t take us long to get the hang of it at all! We did have a rainy, windy day so tried the log burner.....wonderful 🤗🤗 my only suggestion is another sofa! 6 adults on two sofas was a bit cosy 😂 The barn was also conveniently located for everything too. Ulllacombe Farm does amazing steak and lamb chops, Rugglestone Inn does HUGE portions and good food, Co-op in Bovey Tracey very well stocked! Parke (National Trust) does fab cream teas, House of Marbles good for a meander around, worth walking Haytor and Saddletor - can do an easy round trip to both, Teignmouth and Dawlish nice seaside towns. We will definitely be booking another holiday with you. Thank you!

An avid traveller and clinical writer who works from home. I love to walk (hence the barn in Dartmoor) and also enjoy horse riding. I am a keen reader and member of a book club, and also enjoy cooking and eating out.
Favourite holiday destinations include Thailand and Malaysia, as well as France, Italy and Greece. Chosen in a large part due to the food there!
I have done a lot of backpacking but nowadays I like to travel in more comfort and I aim to provide that at Chinkwell Tor.

Why they chose this property

My husband fell in love with Chinkwell Tor when he came to view it and despite it taking us almost a year to purchase we were determined to make this beautiful place our holiday home.

What makes this property unique

The ability to walk onto Dartmoor National park from the property itself is wonderful, and the fresh air and peaceful atmosphere ensures that you always feel refreshed after a stay. We also loved the fact that we could walk to nearby WIdecombe in the Moor where our favourite tea room and one of our favourite pubs is located.
