The property has been carefully restored to combine traditional features such as exposed stonework and an unusually spacious garden room that was formerly the wheelhouse for horses threshing corn.

The Wheelhouse is just a couple of miles from the pretty village of Swainby and well placed for visiting the market town of Thirsk and surrounding ‘Herriot Country’. A little further afield is the north east coast with its fishing villages and Whitby where Whitby Abbey stands majestically on the headland above the traditional working harbour. For the energetic there is good surfing at Saltburn. The North York Moors and ’Heartbeat’ country provide stunning scenery and are wonderful for touring. Shops and pub 2½ miles.

Family Holoday

We chose it because it looked quirky and was right up on the side of one of north yorkshires dales. It was lovely, quiet and dog friendly, with stunning walks you could do straight from the house and within a reasonable distance of North Yorkshires major sites. The house was set out really nicely. The big windows in the wheelhouse were directed towards the setting sun out in the direction of the dales. We weren't short of places to eat. The pubs served really good food and were also people and dog friendly. The dog and gun at Knayton was a particular favourite.

Beautiful position at the end of a valley.

Beautiful position at the end of a valley. easy to get by car to the local shop and supermarket not far away. Local people very friendly. Good walks start very close to the accommodation. Pheasants and sheep in abundance. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

The Wheelhouse is great for a calming break away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

The Wheelhouse is great for a calming break away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It retains its history yet has a clean modern look to its interior. Kitchen is very well equipped with some welcome treats. Beautiful landscape surround it and abundant wildlife. Lots of local walking options. Pubs in Swainsby but you need to go further afield for a local shop. Window seats and cushions for readers - games also supplied. There is no WiFi - suited us, but not for everybody. Annoyingly only 1 of our 3 phones had any reception (and that was erratic) - 3 network. Others networks the welcome pack suggest are OK. Overall though a memorable restful enjoyable break - peacefulness, views and back to nature are it’s strength Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

A beautiful position on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors, with a panoramic view over half Yorkshire.

A beautiful position on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors, with a panoramic view over half Yorkshire. The nearest house is a few feet away - and right in front of the conservatory window - but apart from that there are no other dwellings for almost a mile. The other house is also a holiday home. When we were there it wasn't being used, which meant that we had the place very much to ourselves. The kitchen is well-stocked, the bathroom works well, and the beds are comfortable. In early September expect the garden to be overrun with pheasants and partridges, released from their pens for the shooting season.

Wonderful location but remote.

Wonderful location but remote. Clean, comfortable and welcoming. Broadband would be helpful as mobile signal quite poor.

Fantastic location and a stunning conservatory looking out over the valley.

Fantastic location and a stunning conservatory looking out over the valley. Right by the Cleveland way, and a short hike to Gold hill gives you stunning vistas. Down the road in Swainby is the Black Horse and the best pub meal we ever had!

This is the fifth time we have stayed during the last ten years.

This is the fifth time we have stayed during the last ten years. We still love it! The location is perfect for those who want to get away from it all. It’s a 2.5 mile walk to the pub which is fine for us as that’s why we go for the fantastic walks. Unfortunately the nearest shop is a good drive away now. We will certainly be returning. I would say though there used to be a great arrival hamper so if you arrived late you didn’t need to worry about stopping on route, on our last visit there was just milk and ginger biscuits so be aware and take a few provisions.
