Beautiful and tranquil setting. Perfect getaway.

We had a fantastic week's break staying in an apartment at Villa il Castellaccio. The owner, Leonardo, was on hand to welcome us despite the fact that our flight was delayed which meant that we didn't arrive until the early hours of the morning. He proved to be a consummate host - attentive and helpful but not intrusive. The Villa is well located for the major towns and cities of the region such as Florence, Siena, Arezzo and Montepulciano but it's sufficiently remote to provide a tranquil break. Indeed, perhaps our most enjoyable time was spent just lazing by the poolside soaking up the sun and breathing in the country air. The apartment was well appointed and very comfortable with all the facilities needed in the kitchen to cook. There was also a communal kitchen room located 50 yards away with two barbecues and a pizza oven complete with patio area. We used this on a couple of evenings to cook some very thick but reasonably priced steaks bought in the local supermarket. In summary we had a fantastic time and would have no reservations in recommending Villa il Castellaccio. We hope to return again soon.

Fabulous vacation accomodation

Villa Il Castellaccio was one of the very few vacation homes which exceeded our expectations in all respects. The villa is better in real life than in the website photos. Leonardo and his staff epitomized hospitality and professionalism. Our two families (10 peoplein all) stayed for one week and all thoroughly enjoyed it. The villa is extremely large and well appointed. The pool and outdoor area was perfect for relaxing and large outdoor table was ideal for large evening meals. Check in and check out were a breeze and Leonardo took all of any unexpected needs or requests we had. The grounds are very private and quiet at night, yet accessible to many other amenities by short car trip. Several of us also went hiking/running in the surrounding area, which was very scenic. We would definitely recommend this villa for a Tuscany vacation, and intend to return when next we are able to visit this idyllic region.

Stunning and authentic villa

The photos posted really do not give this property justice. It was beautiful and very well situated. We were a group of 2 families, 10 in total and we stayed in the largest of the villas. It was ideal for our group, with plenty of space for everybody. The kitchen facilities were unparalleled in comparison to any other private accommodation that I've stayed in previously. The pool area was a wonderful amenity and provided an excellent way to spend an entire day. The host, Leonardo was very welcoming and helpful. On one occasion, when we locked ourselves out of the villa, his response to our plight was immediate and effective. His staff who maintain the property, were lovely and always present to assist. If I was looking for a villa to stay in the Tuscany region, I would look no further than this property.

Fantastic week in Tuscany!

Our stay in this villa was absolutely perfect and we were all sorry to see it come to an end! I stayed there with my husband, two young children (aged 2 and 5) and my mother-in-law in Castellaccio 3. The unit was incredibly spacious, clean, comfortable and furnished with all the amenities we could have wanted. Leonardo and Roxana were extremely hospitable and friendly, and allowed us to feel right at home. The place was well-maintained and kept up, and yet we rarely saw signs of people being around doing the upkeep, thereby allowing us to enjoy the quiet and peacefulness of the surroundings. Our children enjoyed multipled swims in the pool each day and we all loved making dinners in the beautiful kitchen, as well as making delicious pizzas in the communal pizza oven. We enjoyed being able to mingle with other families and share our meals with them when we chose to, but also to have as much privacy as we needed in our own place. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the Tuscany area, and in fact have already done so since getting home 24 hours ago!

Excellent place to relax in beautiful Chianti

This place has all the advantages of an excellent location that you can think of when going to the Tuscany. It is located in the heart of the Chianti district so you can travel around and enjoy wine. If you think about visiting historical cities these are maximum 90 minutes drive from that place. And if you think about staying at home enjoying the sun and lovely nature this is also the right place to be. The owner and host – Leonardo is probably one of the nicest person on the planet – always ready to help, providing dozens of useful tips on vineries, sightseeing tours, restaurants… We will definitely think about returning to that place and to the Tuscany.

You won't be disappointed!

Thanks to Leonardo's good directions we arrived at Villa Il Castellaccio quite early and were greeted by Leonardo who told us that they were "busy working for you" getting ourapartment ready. He showed us where we could leave our luggage and then gave us a local map with suggestions for grocery stores and places to eat lunch before returning to check-in. The setting of Villa Castellaccio is wonderful and the view breathtaking. It is about 400 metres up in the Tuscan hills, which are covered with vineyards. At check-in, we were excited to see our apartment (Castellacio 3) and we were not disappointed. It was very spacious and full of character. The interior had been modernized yet they had managed to retain the character of the building. The best part was the covered porch off the kitchen. We ate most of our meals there and everything tasted so much better outdoors, looking at the gorgeous view. The pool is well maintained and there are plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas. The other apartments were occupied and it was nice in the late afternoon to visit the pool and share our days' adventures with the other guests, though often we had the pool to ourselves. One evening we made pizza dough and cooked pizza in the wood fire pizza oven. We are no experts so it took us a few hours but the results were quite good and our teenage children thought it was great fun. From Il Castellaccio, you can easily take a train into Florence or drive, as we did to Sienna, Volterra and San Gimignano. We did not take advantage of Leonardo's wine tasting simply because it is too far for us to bring back wine to the states but we hear that he is very enthusiastic about it and it is well worth it. Leonardo was an extremely accommodating host and really made you feel as though you were a guest of his family. We would be happy to and hope to stay at Il Castellaccio again. Don't hesitate - book it! You won't be disappointed.

Nice holidays in a pleasant environment

during our one-week stay near Greve we felt very comfortable - Leonardo, the owner, really takes care of his guests - starting from welcoming his guests, explaining the property and facilities, making a tour in his cellar and also providing good recommendation of local cuisine and must-sees in Tuscany. The property was very clean and well maintained - a plus is the mini-bar - a selection of 0'7L bottles of Leonardos different Chianti wines that you can really enjoy. All-in-all we, a family with two children (9 and 6 years old), enjoyed our stay very much and would warmly recommend it to friends.

Kiwis in Tuscany

We had a wonderful time at Villa Castellacio. The weather was superb, the scenery amazing and the hospitality excellent. We were two couples and we stayed in Apartment 3. The apartment is very well set out with everything you need and the welcoming bottle of local wine was a lovely touch. The only tiny concern was that it was quite cool in the evenings inside and the heat was difficult to operate and, of course, very expensive. Leonardo and Roxanna were both very welcoming and helpful and we loved the winery tour and tasting. There was so much to do-we had a day at San Gimignano, a day in Florence and a day in Pisa and it was also lovely to have a day staying"home" and relaxing. I can highly recommend Villa Castellacio as a perfect holiday destination

Very nice place, typical and peacefull

We stayed in Villa Castallacio 2 at the end of April 2011 and really appreciated the place. The reservation is very easy, because they are very well organised and answer very quickly with many details to any questions about the apartments. A very warm welcome by Roxana and Leonardo, always smiling and very helpful. The apartment is really comfortable, very clean, typicaly decorated and very very spacious (despite a lack of light due to the configuration of this old and typical house). We really appreciated to spend the cool evenings around the fire. And in the warm days, we ate around the swimming pool which is just situated front of the apartment. It was very nice to cook with the fire (because they have a special room to cook pizza or meat with fire). The swimming pool is very nice, although it was too cold at this time to bath, but the garden is lovely. It’s very peacefull, in heart of nature, very calm and authentic. They produce wine (available on a shelf of the kitchen) that you can taste in the apartment. Leonardo showed us around in his little museum and speak about wine and his house with a real passion. A nice place to discover Toscana. We visited San Gimigniano, Siena and Firenze (by train from Figline). A place to discover ! Very very nice people !

Very comfortable, good value and prime location

We stayed here the second week of April and the weather was great. The owner even opened the pool since the weather was so warm. We stayed in apartment 2 and found it to be clean, comfortable and spacious. There are two bedrooms and a loft area which provided enough space for a family of 5. There was also a living room with a fire place and a big kitchen. The apartment was tastefully decorated and equipped with everything we needed for the week. Upon arrival, we were treated to a bottle of wine and all the tourist information we needed for the week. We especially appreciated the local map, map of Florence and train schedule. All our questions were answered and we enjoyed the rest of the afternoon near the pool. The grounds are well maintained and there are beautiful olive trees and grape vines growing on the property. The location of the villa is perched atop a hill and the whole region is very hilly. It is about 15 minute drive from the nearest sizable town (Figline Valdarno) with a grocery store and about 20-25 minutes on hilly roads to Greve. This is a good base location for exploring the area. While we enjoy wine, we are not connoisseurs so we did not take advantage of the local winerys, tasting or tours. If you are here in Tuscany for that reason, I think this would be an ideal location. During the week we visited Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano, Siena and Florence (twice). The longest drive was to PIsa which took about 1.5 hours. We took the train to Florence once, which was very easy (33 euro round trip for a family of 5) and drove once (about 35 minutes, we parked at the main train station for 20 euro about 6 hours). I would think the location is best if you are going to spend time in Northern/Western Tuscany. We did not venture too far south or east. The tourist road Rte. 222 which leads to Siena is very picturesque and weaves through many lovely towns. Be aware, it is very hilly and slow going. It was a pleasant drive to Greve and then on to Siena (although some members of the family did suffer car sickness due to the roads) but we opted for the much longer route via the Autostrada home so we would not have to drive the hilly, windy roads again in the dark. We ate at a very nice restaurant in the nearest village of Dudda and we also ate at a great restaurant in Figline called Le Torre Antica (down the alley way off the main square on the left). Both of these were local places and we got to experience a bit of what the locals have here

We stayed 9 days with a group of four other couples for my 50th birthday. Wine is excellent, venue superb, and to a person all said it was the most relaxing part of extended trips. The pool was especially looked forward to by all after travelling. Leonardo has created a special enviroment and we look forward to another visit.

Beautiful Chianti Villa

I rented the villa for the month of October and found it a perfect in all ways. The villa is beautiful and spacious. At times we had 12 people staying with us and it was never felt crowded. We had five large bedrooms and the double beds are truly king sized, and firm but comfortable. Each bedroom has its own bathroom. The showers are small, but there are two larger showers in the lower level bathroom-laundry. The kitchen is large and we had many nights of cooking wonderful Italian foods. There is a large outdoor and indoor dining spaces that easily accommodated 12. We ate many meals at these tables and played Mexican Train as well. It is a great group game, which I left in the Villa library for new guests and a future trip back. Leonardo was so helpful with arrangements and very kind to us. The grounds man, Manju, was always working so hard and very helpful. The villa is in the most gorgeous setting with vineyard covered valleys surrounded by chestnut forest covered hillsides. The area has lovely winding roads through the Chianti hills. Lucolena in Chianti is a pretty little sleepy village, except during the Chestnut Festival in late October when crowds show up to celebrate. You will want a car for this stay, but the Figline-Valdarno train station is a 20 minute drive away and easily access Florence by high speed trains and from there so many wonderful day trips. Locally there are wonderful sleepy little villages with the wonderful family owned restaurants and wineries. Lovely ancient Chianti municipalities are within 30 minutes scenic drives with shopping, dining, wining and sightseeing: Radda, Greve, Panzano, etc… Siena is a within an hour drive to the heart of the City. At the villa we had a wonderful dinner for 12 by an amazing chef! It was one of the best meals we had in Italy! We wanted to do it again, but we never had the opportunity to coordinate again. It was a definite highlight! Leonardo helped coordinate the chef dinner, a wine tour for 12 and a lunch in Panzano for 12 with Dario Cecchini. We drank some wonderful wine grown and produced by Leonardo and had the first of his extra-Virgin olive oil, oh so good! We stayed a month and it was way too short. I highly recommend this villa and this area!

Tuscany family vacation

We stayed at Leonardo’s beautiful home in the Chianti region. Our group consisted of 4 siblings and spouses from various areas of the United States. We were only there for three short nights, but loved every minute. The home and the grounds are stunning. We had dinner made by the chef there the first night. We all agreed that it was the best dinner we had during our entire two weeks in Italy! Leonardo was very hospitable and responded very quickly to a few questions we had during our stay. If we ever go back to this region, Villa il Castellaccio is where we will stay.
