About this property

Stylish luxury trulli with private pool and amazing sea view

Santa Caterina is a distinctive and beautiful holiday home that has been restored with a rare appreciation of the simplicity and charm of the original ‘saracen’ trulli. What sets this house apart from others is the outstanding view of the sea over olive groves, the attractive garden veranda and the stylish yet simple interiors. The spacious garden, quiet courtyard and the generous swimming pool are perfect for outdoor living.

Situated between the two historic cities of Ostuni and Carovigno, it is in an ideal location for exploring all the delights of the Puglia area.

The house is equipped for relaxing in the shade and eating outside, whether on the roof terrace, the courtyard or veranda. Serious cooking is also possible with a proper selection of pans, utensils and local cook books. There is a BBQ in the garden.

Despite the heat in July and August the fact that the house stands at 300m means that there is often a sea breeze.

The original two bedrooms are light and airy high vaulted rooms with their own bathrooms and air conditioning. Recently we have added a third room to the side of the house - in the old style - that is used as a third bedroom or a second sitting room.. It has its own bathroom and air conditioning.

Santa Caterina is a distinctive and beautiful holiday home that has been restored with a rare appreciation of the simplicity and charm of the original ‘saracen’ trulli. Saracen trulli have the same vaulted interiors as those with the conical roofs but the roof is either domed or flat. Our lovely trulli was improved about 100 years ago by the addition of a more imposing front elevation. In the restoration from a ruin 15 years ago the windows were added and the two trulli joined with a stone arch to create the kitchen/dining area and the sitting room. Since then we have added a further bedroom and bathroom in the local style.

All the bedrooms are light and airy high vaulted rooms and have their own shower room with toilet, bidet and sink - all have air conditioning.

The kitchen includes a gas hob and electric oven as well as a proper range of saucepans and implements. The crockery is from Grottaglie with a classic local design. There is a designer Italian dining table and chairs in the kitchen - fine for 4 or 5 but the table can easily be altered to take 8 in comfort.

The sitting room has a comfortable Danish sofa and plenty of other seats with Moroccan influenced cushions.

The veranda has a stone table with large stone benches (and cushions). It is covered to provide shade from the midday sun and is also a perfect place to dine in the warm summer evenings. On the roof terrace there is also a stone sofa as well as a table and chairs – perfect for romantic dining.
On the other side there is a quiet courtyard with a curved stone seat framed by bougainvillea. The courtyard also has a dining table and chairs suitable for up to 8 dining.

The individually designed swimming pool is entered from large steps from one side (the first being very wide and only a few cm deep for children to play in) and on the other there is a sunken seating area. The pool is 10m x 4m and the depth runs from 1m to 3m.

Around the property there are no other buildings close. The garden of the property is large and there is also an orchard adjoining which can be used by residents. The land around is otherwise either olive or almond groves. The track to the property is a dead end with a group of three villas (all owned by one family) further down on the opposite side of the road. There is therefore no traffic danger or noise.

Santa Caterina has been carefully designed to create high quality accommodation in a visually stunning setting.

N.B. This property is less suitable for small children who cannot swim as the pool is only fenced on one side.

Children facilities include:
• Cot available together with high chair
• Car seat (2x)
• Buggy
• Child's swing
• Other useful items including a couple of toys, plastic plate, cutlery and a potty.
For the pool safety the gate can be closed but the fence can be circumvented by walking round the other way - out into the car parking area and back across part of the garden, or climbing over the wall around the stone table on the veranda.

The other safety point is the roof. The outside staircase is rudimentary and the parapet on the roof fairly low so we do not allow small children up the stairs. There is of course a rope rail so that it is fine for all but toddlers.

A fabulous home in a great location

We were a group of 6 - parents with adult children who all enjoyed a relaxing and enjoyable stay at Santa Caterina. Three good sized bedrooms with private showers and plenty of seating areas outside. There was everything we needed; coffee pot, cooking utensils, sun loungers, towels, toiletries, etc. Beaches, supermarkets and historic towns were easily reached. Monopoli and Lecce were two favourites of ours. Thank you to Edmund and Angelo for the generous welcome pack and for sorting out a problem we had with one of the showers quickly. A lovely property in a beautiful place.

Amazing view and pool but near Ostuni

Edmund communicated very well from the start of the booking and provided lots of interesting and helpful information. Including a couple of bottles of wine and food on arrival. Very much needed after late late-night journey. The villa itself is down winding lanes in the countryside but that means it is very quiet and you have an amazing view of the sea. Well worth the drive from Ostuni which is still only 10 minutes away and has everything you need for a great holiday. All in all would recommend it!

Wonderful setting for a relaxing family holiday

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Edmund’s house. He is very helpful and respond rapidly to every query. The house is beautiful and very well equipped with all you might need. The three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, offer big independent spaces for everyone. The setting is wonderful and the roof top terrace is truly magical. The neighbouring towns are beautiful and there is lots to visit within 1 hour. We would highly recommend.

Fantastic week in a wonderful property

We have recently returned from a fantastic week staying in Santa Caterina. The property really is wonderful and is exactly as described and as the photos show. A very tranquil and relaxing place to spend the days, and evenings. We stayed in and cooked (in the very well equipped kitchen) on a couple of occasions - something we would never normally do on holiday but we found it hard to drag ourselves away on some days! Edmund was extremely helpful at all times and the Welcome Pack was very appreciated and superior to any we have ever received elsewhere! On the days we did leave the villa, we especially liked going to Ostuni which had a lovely atmosphere, both by day and night and was very easy to get to in under 10 mins. It really was a special week and we wouldn't hesitate to return.

Worth the wait!

We originally booked to visit this beautiful property in Puglia in August 2020 to celebrate a 40th birthday. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we didn't get to visit until August 2022. It was definitely worth the wait! A truly beautiful villa, in a great location, in a beautiful area of Italy. Edmund and Jo were great to correspond with, the most helpful of any villa owner/host we have ever experienced and nothing was too much trouble for them. They really helped to make our holiday all we hoped and dreamt it could be. The villa is in a lovely location, with a lovely pool and views and was perfect for what we wanted for our relaxing family holiday. Highly recommend you visit this villa - you won't be disappointed!

Relaxing in Puglia

Fab outdoor areas. Great view, both from pool & roof. Minor problems resolved swiftly. Like a ‘tardis’ looks small from the outside but readily housed our family of 6 in comfort. Thanks Edmund!

Fantastic family break

We had a fantastic week in Ostuni and this property provided perfect base to explore local towns and beaches. Perfect size fore four adults and two children, in a very secluded and secure environment. On first arrival it felt very remote however we soon settled in to rural lifestyle with only 10 min drive to nearest supermarket and Ostuni. Very highly recommend for a relaxing holiday

Perfect family retreat

This property in Puglia is perfect for a family getaway and we had a fantastic time with our 1.5 year old little girl. The property is in a beautiful location surrounded by olive trees etc and is very close to the town of Ostuni and various other sights in Puglia. The property was perfectly presented, super clean and fantastically well equipped. It has lots of outdoor seating space for breakfasts/lunches/dinners and of course a fantastic pool! The bikes that were available for use were a real bonus and Ed the owner is super helpful with lots of hints and tips. Cannot recommend highly enough!

Wonderful two week holiday

We have just spent two fantastic weeks in this ideally located and superbly equipped trulli. Great pool with outdoor seating and ample relaxation areas. Enough distance from neighbours to ensure peace and quiet. Perfect for family holidays or small groups. It felt like home from home, with a fully equipped kitchen and very comfortable beds. Very clean and all round great facilities. 5-10 min easy drive to Ostuni or Carovigno, with recommendations of restaurants and activities from extremely helpful owner.

Beautiful villa and area

We enjoyed a fantastic week in this villa. It was very comfortable, clean and well equipped with everything we needed for a relaxing stay. The outside space was amazing photos can’t do the views justice and there were plenty of shady areas to eat and relax. The pool was a very good size. We loved exploring nearby beaches and towns and would like to return to the area one day. We found the owners extremely helpful and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a holiday here.

A beautiful property in a lovely location.

We have just enjoyed a wonderful two weeks in Santa Caterina. The property is very well equipped, immaculately clean and the most comfortable beds we have ever had in a holiday property! Beautiful large pool and three lovely terraces. A fantastic location to explore the lovely hillside towns in Puglia and very easy to access from Brindisi airport.

Beautiful house, great location

We, 4 adults, stayed for 5 days in September 2017 - and wish we could have been there longer. The house itself is beautiful - furnished stylishly, well equipped (especially the kitchen) and very comfortable. The outside space is huge - lots of options for eating outside comfortably at any time of day, and the pool was big enough to have a proper swim. It's in a peaceful location but Ostuni and Caravigno are in easy reach and there's lots to explore within an hour or so's drive - more hilltop towns, places to eat or the sea. All in all - a great stay.

Beautiful luxury property in a stunning location

We have just returned from a 2 week fantastic holiday staying at Santa Caterina. The property has been redeveloped to the highest standards, giving plenty of space and amenities for our whole family. Edmund and Jo have clearly worked very hard to ensure that guests have the very best experience. The property feels very private and we loved the views to the sea and olive trees. However, both Ostuni and Carovigno are both in very close proximity and have a great selection of restaurants. We really enjoyed La Torre in Marina di Ostuni and also the local Masseria N'Zeta that is just over the road. The best bar (with beautiful views and an incredible cocktail list) was Tito Schipa in Ostuni's old town. My 6 year old daughter learnt to swim whilst on holiday and we were in the swimming pool every day. As well as taking our own things, the property is equipped with balls, lilos etc - all that have created lots of fun in the pool. It was great to have a large number of towels - they certainly provide a lot! The temperature has been very hot during our stay so the shaded areas by the pool and in the seating area by the main doors are very welcoming. The views from the top of the roof are stunning and the area to the side of the property (that can include a sail) are pretty. Santa Caterina is a great base for exploring. Ostuni (and its old town) are very picturesque. The market (on a Saturday morning) is very busy but well worth a trip. We found that the temperature in the afternoon is very hot - most places do not open until the evening when it is far more comfortable. Two of our favourite trips were to the Alberobello market (this place is like nothing you have seen before and shows off the trulli style architecture) and to the Grotte di Castellana (very large caves). The latter is fascinating and the guided tour was very good. Our favourite beach was Torre Guaceto. We parked in the main car park and got the train to the beach. The water is shallow and crystal clear - perfect for snorkelling. Torre Santa Sabina is also lovely. As a family, we have done a lot of traveling over the years and have stayed in many locations. Santa Caterina is certainly among one of the best. It is a luxury house, well equipped in beautiful surroundings. It has been a perfect summer holiday!

Beautifully located, characterful trullo, very comfortable and well equipped to a high standard.

The perfect location from which to explore the best of Puglia. The property is private but not isolated and close to charming Carovigno for delicious local produce and the warm hospitality we encountered from all. A memorable evening spent watching vibrant pizzica performances in the town square was a delight. All arrangements and communications with owner Ed were excellent and made for a stress free stay.

Disappointing

We are a family of 5 and have recently spent a week in Santa Caterina. A key requirement for us, with 3 young boys, is a good quality pool. The pool is a great size but on the day of our arrival, it was full of hundreds of dead woodlouse and there was no way we could dip a toe in it. To find this on day 1 was a real disappointment. We would have thought that the pool would be cleaned on changeover day. The owner was responsive but told us that the pool will have been cleaned on Saturday at the latest (2 days prior to our arrival). I spent a couple of hours most mornings netting the woodlouse so our boys could swim; due to this, we spent many more days at the beach than we otherwise would have done. The woodlouse were also very apparent within the villa itself and we had to place poison down, particularly in the kitchen area. We are seasoned travellers and to be told that we were 'in the wild' we found somewhat patronising. It was such a shame as the villa is lovely, well-equipped and homely. Ostuni is beautiful, as is Martina Franca, and we thoroughly enjoyed Monticelli beach and it's cool beach club (as adivsed by the owner). Sadly, we will not be returning and obviously cannot give it any sort of recommendation.

An attractive and comfortable house with plenty to see and do

We stayed with our family (two grown up children and one teenager) in this beautifully modernised trullo. It was attractively furnished and comfortable with a variety of outside spaces. The photos on the website don't entirely do it justice. The pool was great - a good size and clean and well-maintained. One of the nicest aspects was the feeling of privacy - surrounded by olive groves with distant views of the Adriatic. Even on the hottest days there was a cooling breeze which was very welcome. The house is well-equipped and although we had some problems with air-con and alarms, Edmund was very quick to get them put right with the aid of the on-site manager. There are some very attractive towns to visit nearby and we used Edmund's recommendations to find some lovely restaurants and bakeries. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Great Holiday

Second time to Santa Caterina, this time just my wife and I, for a 2 week get away from it all break. The Trulli is perfect for this. Its isolated location means if you've got food and drink you could go for days without seeing another person if you so wished. The Trulli is so well equipped you want for nothing, the beds are so comfortable and the kitchen has everything you need. The views from the roof terrace are fantastic and as I said in my previous review get up at 5 one morning just to see the sunrise! Lazy days spent round the pool and bustling evenings spent in Ostuni make for a perfect holiday, but there's also plenty of great places to visit. We enjoyed the Monday market at San Vito Dei Normanni (20mins). Lecce,(1 hour) the Florence of the south is spectacular if a tad difficult to park but well worth the effort. Caravigno has a great buzz in the evening with plenty going on but is also very nice for a stroll and a coffee in the morning before it gets too hot. Ceglie Messapica (20mins) has some great views of the surrounding countryside and Cisternino (35mins) has some great restaurants, Sant'Anna and Belle Italia being our favourites. Our favourite restaurant in Ostuni (this year) was Casa de San Giacomo, half way up the hill to the Cathedral in an old Almond press building, but if you want posh try Osteria Piazzetta Cattedrale, we chose from the degustazione menu, a little on the pricey side but not too expensive. With wine we paid about 100euros for 2. All in all another great stay at beautiful Santa Caterina, oh, and my iPod sounds great through the Bose!!

Didn't want to leave!

My wife, 5 year old son & I had the most wonderful week in this beautiful property. The quality of everything, from the fixtures to the comfy beds, was first class. The pool was the real draw as was the view (which the photos don't do justice to) & the welcome breeze which you can hear coming up from the sea through the trees. There are a vast number of different eating areas at the house. We just about managed a meal at each one over the course of the week. We loved the attention to detail when it came to the lighting. There are lights everywhere (very tastefully done) and really turn the house into something special when the sun has gone down. We had 2 great trips to the beach - come off the dual carriageway at Torre Canne - immediately turn right as if almost doubling back on yourself - drive 100m & carefully park up on the side of the road to the right (we did this at around 10am). You can then follow a path across a field for 100m, over a dune and you arrive at a beautiful sandy beach & perfect sea. Take towels & a picnic. There is no cost and nowhere near the number of people as further north up the beach where you have to pay! Ostuni really comes alive in the evening and there are no end of places to eat & drink. Get there in time for the sunset and be sure to get lost amongst the beautiful white washed alleyways. Locorotondo & Alberobello can be visited in a day. The old part of Caravigno is definitely worth an evening stroll with an ice cream. The Trulli was exactly as described. The welcome pack was absolutely spot on! Communication with Edmund (the owner) was great. We were provided with every bit of information plus there is more at the house. We would absolutely recommend this property to anyone looking for somewhere to stay in this area. Now to work off all that wonderful food & drink!!

Stunning!!

We had a fantastic week at Santa Caterina. The Trullo has everything you could think of to make for a brilliant holiday. From the beautiful, well equipped interiors to the charming roof terrace and the fantastic pool, everything has been so well thought out, to make your stay perfect. We were a party of 4 adults (2 couples) so having 2 bathrooms made things very easy. It's well worth getting up early one morning to see and photograph the sunrise over the Adriatic from the roof. The sunsets were pretty spectacular too. We had brilliant weather during our stay, well up into the mid 30's so the aircon got some use. Ostuni has a great vibe in the evenings and there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. The whole area is great to explore with the coast only a short drive away and towns such as Alberobello well worth a visit, if a touch touristy. We'd have no hesitation in recommending Santa Caterina as a great property with great facilities in a lovely area.

Truly Lovely Trullo..

We would wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful and well-appointed trullo – the setting is truly charming, surrounded by olive groves with a view of the sea in the distance. We found it very difficult to drag ourselves away from the trullo, so we spent most afternoons relaxing by the pool, and some wonderful evenings too! It’s in an isolated spot, so perfect for us, as we like to avoid the madding crowd. Every need is provided for – air conditioning, DVD player, all necessary appliances and home comforts. The caretaker Angelo was also very helpful, and chatty.

The Best way to relax.

My Husband and I stayed in the villa for a glorious week in June. We both needed to relax and what better way than around the pool surrounded by olive groves. The villa was very well equipped and had all the things you need when you arrive so you did not need to go anywhere for the first day, except to explore the fabulous countryside. You could tell that a family owns this property as they have really thought of everything down to the glorious local olive oil and wine that are left out for you. The property and pool were very clean and well maintained. We would definately recomend this property and can't wait to go back as we have a lot more of this beautiful region to explore.

We live in Exeter UK. We are both lawyers and went to Puglia for a long weekend. We fell in love with this property and have never regretted buying it. We sometimes go with just us and our little one (now 15) and sometimes with the three other children and their partners. Both work really well.

Why they chose this property

This property has the charm of something ancient but without the usual drawbacks ( low ceilings, no light and pokey rooms) that you see in other modernisations. The open aspect to the sea view and the peace of the olive groves around clinched it.

What makes this property unique

Our favourite treat is dinner on the roof for two as the sun sets. We love the seclusion and the easy access to Ostuni for its medieval charm and great food (+ amazing fish shops) and markets. A trip to the beach takes 10 - 15 mins in the car depending on the choice.
