About this property

Amazing Villa in Piedmont, Italy, Views, Wine Country, Pool, Mountains, WiFi

One hour from Torino, escape into the bucolic hills of Piedmont. This beautiful 17th Century stone villa sits on 5.6 hectares (fourteen acres) at an altitude of 600 meters (2000 feet) near the small village of Bonvicino and four miles from Dogliani, in the heart of Piedmont, Italy.

Villa San Lorenzo di Bonvicino provides a perfect base for exploring the Piemonte region. Enjoy walking through Italian hill towns and vineyards, visit the well-known towns of Monforte D’Alba and Barolo (nine and 12 miles away). Sit on the balcony, sipping your morning coffee or enjoying a glass of wine at sunset while gazing out at the rugged and lush green mountain landscape. On clear days, enjoy spectacular views of the Alps.

I purchased and renovated Villa San Lorenzo because I wanted to provide a beautiful oasis for vacationers seeking delicious food and wine, lovely hikes, untouristed villages and enjoy a slower pace. The villa’s renovation was completed between 2008 and 2013, including new bathrooms, gourmet chef’s kitche, beds, linens, antique furnishings, British satellite TV, high-speed internet, plumbing, electrical. Modern conveniences are combined with the antiquity of this centuries old farmhouse. Furnishings combine comfort in keeping with the style of the region and preservation of the house. There are seven bedrooms with air conditioning (Six rooms with King Size Beds, 1 room with the choice of 2 single beds or one King bed). Seven modern bathrooms with bath/shower, one bathroom with large glass shower, and one WC off of the chef’s kitchen.

The villa includes a large chef’s kitchen with 6 gas burner stove, as well as a smaller fully equipped kitchen, two living spaces and one large dining/living space with floor to ceiling windows. The property offers privacy, spectacular views in a beautiful peaceful setting. Perfect for a family or a group of friends.

I love to bake bread and pizza so we added a wood-fired traditional brick oven for pizza and bread in 2007. Swim in the 11 meter swimming pool with a view of Murazzano. Dine at the stone table overlooking the hills of the Alta Langa. Enjoy cooking in the gorgeous chef’s kitchen, dining al fresco, or choose from one of the region's many delicious restaurants. Local cuisine offers fresh regional dishes based on seasonal ingredients.

The property is completely private, nestled in the Alta Langa hills. Just minutes from town (cafes, restaurants, shopping, cinema), you will feel peacefully secluded on this spacious property. Pick fresh figs, apples, cherries, and blackberries just outside your front door.

Walk directly from the house to view hawks, warblers, finches, sparrows, rabbits, deer, fox, coyotes, or drive to one of the many walks nearby. Local wineries abound, featuring the internationally acclaimed Barolo and Barbaresco wines.

The nearby town of Alba is known as the home of the famous white truffle. Bra prides itself on being the heart of the Slow Food movement. Nearby Cherasco is known for its famous chocolate, as well as offering a cultural museum and film retrospectives. Horseback riding and swimming are just minutes away. Dogliani offers a choice of cafes where you can sample homemade gelati, enjoy a cappuccino or stay for lunch or dinner.

Visit the farmer’s market in a different local town each day of the week. Take a walk or drive to Bossolasco to sample their famous chocolates (including a variety of hot chocolate beverages) and views stretching over the entire region. You may want to take a trip to the Italian Riviera near Savona on the Ligurian Coast or to the Alps for skiing or hiking, both about an hour's drive away. Cinque Terre, Nice, and Milan are approximately two hours away. All linens provided. Daily or weekly cleaning available at additional cost.

Fantastic hosts, stunning property (even better than the photos).

Our hosts could not have been more accommodating, after a very delayed flight travelling with small children we’d missed our restaurant reservation. Clay and Erica could not have been more amazing. They went into the town, brought back food and cooked for us!!! Unreal! The property is heavenly, perched on a hilltop overlooking a hill town in Piedmont. The accommodation is stylish, sumptuous - faultless!

Absolutely wonderful

The property is first class. Beautiful rooms and facilities especially the kitchen. Clay the owner was extrmely helpful and recommended things to see and do which we would have never been able to do without his expert local knowledge. His recomendations for wine tasting and restaurants was always spot on. He is well known locally and so we had a genuinely warm reception everywhere. The truffle hunt was great fun and we found two truffles which we enjoyed with our dinner. If you are booking San Lorenzo take advantage of his local knowlede in all things related to wine and food. You wont go wrong. I would highly recommend this place. No caveats.

Fantastic

We were a group of 15 people staying the house and enjoyed every moment of it. We started by have Clay and his friends to cook for us - great introduction to Piemonte food and wine. The rooms are excellent and all could be together and have some privacy. The kitchen is the best ever - just what we people who likes cooking dreaming of. The house is located relatively remotely but very beautifully. Clay and his friends were very friendly and helpful which made our trip even better. We are all dreaming about doing it again.

Amazing property and experience

My family spent 3 weeks at VSL last summer. We love to cook, and were originally drawn to the kitchen and pizza oven at VSL. While these were the initial interest points, we quickly realized what a special property we had found. Our family stayed in the main house, which worked well for our smaller group. The property is also versatile enough to hold multiple families each of which can have their own separate living space. There are multiple indoor and outdoor spaces, including a pool, which we used throughout our stay. Clay is an amazing host, who has unique access to the food and wine community in Piedmont. Clay prepared a welcome basket for our first couple of nights, including vegetables, proteins, and wine that was perfect when we arrived. We toured several wineries together; Clay is friends and has close relationships with everyone across Piedmont, so the interactions are deeper and more personal. We learned how to make bread, and pizza, and even created a bread starter that we are still using! It’s helpful to have a car while staying at VSL, but if you wanted to come without a vehicle that’s something that Clay could work out since he drove us on all of our winery visits. At one point during the trip, our son was sick and Clay arranged for a doctor to come to the house; he is accessible for things that happen which may be unexpected during your time in Italy. Clay has lived in Piedmont for more than a decade, so he can design a custom itinerary for whatever you would want to do. We hope to have the chance to return again!

Beautiful Home even more beautiful location

When my family stayed at the Villa San Lorenzo, we had one of the best if not the best vacation we've ever had. We were originally interested in staying in the Piemonte region because of our interest in the wine and food that this area of Italy is famous for. Clay helped us access all of the vineyards and small family restaurants that we could ever have wanted to go to because of the connections he has forged. He was a great ambassador for our trip, and helped us find all of the small local places that would normally feel inaccessible. When we got tired of eating three hour lunches and drinking some of the best wines in the world, the Alps and the Ligurian Sea were within two hours of the villa. This is a truly beautiful home in an even more beautiful region.

Fantastic trip to Piemonte! Our second trip to Pi

Fantastic trip to Piemonte! Our second trip to Piedmont and surely our best. We were hesitant to stray away from a hotel and try renting a Villa in another country but we went for it and are glad we did. The location, amenities and layout of Villa San Lorenzo made it the perfect spot. Adding to this was the invaluable assistance and care Clay took to ensure we had the best trip possible. We are all foodies and immense fans of the region and had prior knowledge to rely on. Clay took this to another level for us. Whether it was finding a chef to cook for us at the house, to the best new place to try for lunch, the best pizza, café, and even down to setting up our truffle hunt. Clay was gracious enough to let us keep the white truffle which we shaved over tajarin we cooked at home later that evening. When we return to Piemonte, we will surely return to Villa San Lorenzo. For now, pictures evoke the great memories paired with an aged glass of Barolo. Brian and JoAnne

Epic experience!

I stayed with a group of fellow winemakers for a week in truffle season, and the whole experience was beyond belief. The property is gorgeous, the scenery amazing, the true chef's kitchen fully equipped, the rooms comfortable and charming. Beyond that, Clay is a gracious and informed host (not to mention master pizza chef) who can help introduce you to the food and wine of Piemonte in a way that is very rare, and leads you to the essence of the place - from pasta classes, truffle hunting, chocolate class, as well as dinner reservations, winery recommendations, etc. I can't imagine a better place to stay.

The Trip of a Lifetime

It sounds pretty cliche, but truer words cannot be spoken about our wonderful trip to Villa San Lorenzo di Bonvicino. From the moment we booked our trip (on a relatively blind internet search), Clay Thompson took complete care of ensuring that this would be an unforgettable adventure. We gathered friends and family to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. Clay arranged our entire week-long stay to include exclusive winery tours/tastings, dinners, lunches which allowed us to get a complete flavor for the people and the rich culture of Piemonte region of Italy. The property itself is a magical restoration! Plenty of room for the 12 of us to spread out, but quaint enough to enjoy time in the common areas. Situated on a hill with views of the Italian Alps, the scenery could not have been more picturesque. Put your entire holiday planning in Clay's hands and he will ensure a most extraordinary vacation!

Wonderful. Couldn't ask for more.

I/we visited and rented the Villa late last year, 2015. I was visiting with a fellow winemaking friend from Friuli. I am a winemaker from Napa Valley and we both are incredibly passionate about food and this was not our first visit to Piedmont. However, this was our best. Truly outstanding hospitality, the location with its natural beauty, tranquility, as well as its close proximity to some of the best restaurants we visited on the trip. The Villa itself was everything we’d hoped for and we felt it was an exceptional value - all amenities were spotless, modern and available to us and the main level kitchen was better than most kitchens in small restaurants! The hosts, Clay and Tamar, went out of their way to make us feel at home and to ensure we had knowledge of all the best places to go and they made sure that we had everything we needed for a perfect stay including the proper recommendations for wineries, winemakers and restaurants, sommeliers and chef's alike. I look forward to a return trip later this year, however, I shouldn't say this (so we can guarantee getting the rental!) in November and December during white truffle season, when Piemonte is at its height of celebration and warmth. Can't wait to go back.

Amazing Villa. Spectacular Region. Excellent Hosts

We booked Villa San Lorenzo during Truffle Hunting season for a friend's 40th birthday and had a fantastic time in this villa. Our group of 16 was large, but the layout of the villa rooms gave everyone space and privacy outside of the large common area with amazing windows looking out to the lovely villa grounds. Every room has a designated bathroom, which is key to confort. Also, the kitchen is a foodie heaven, so much that our group mostly stayed in at nights to cook Vs going out to all the great restaurants in the region. The owners, Clay and Tamar have done an exceptional job with this property. Most importantly, they are amazing hosts, taking care of a multitude of details and requests for such as large group, including: wine tasting tours, pre-arrival food shopping, pasta cooking lessons at the Villa with a local chef (best pasta dish we ate during our whole trip was part of this experience) and a lovely truffle hunt with an authentic truffle hunter. Highly recommend this villa to both large groups and families looking to spend quality time in Piedmonte.

Amazing Stay!

A group of eight avid cooks set ourselves the task of finding a great property in Italy, France OR Spain for a week long foodie vacation. We happened on Villa San Lorenzo, saw the pictures, figured it couldn't possibly be as good as it looked, but that as long as it was close, we'd probably have a pretty good time. Well, we were wrong. It was EVEN BETTER than it looked, and perfectly suited our needs. VSL is beautiful and well located right in the middle of Piedmont, one of the best wine regions in Italy. Tamar and Clay prepped the villa wonderfully for us, leaving us a big basket of local treats, and were a terrific source of information about the region. All eight of our group would recommend it unreservedly. Five PLUS stars!

Great Base to Explore the Piedmont Region

Villa San Lorenzo was the perfect place for our extended family to get together and explore this wonderful part of Italy. Clay and Tamar were very helpful in suggesting places to go, arranging a chef night in, hosting a pizza night and even a morning of yoga.

Hidden Gem !!!!

Villa San Lorenzo is a true hidden gem in the Piedmont region of Italy. We spent 4 amazing days with our 6 and 9 year old kids soaking in the culture, food and life of this incredibly bucolic region. Thanks to the warm attention of villa owners Clay and Tamar, we discovered the rich cuisine of the region and even enjoyed a special evening on the villa's patio savouring Clay's homemade gourmet pizzas made in an authentic stone-brick wood fired pizza oven. We look forward to another visit soon.

A lovingly restored property in Piedmont

This lovely home boasts a private apartment with two big bedrooms and two full baths. The kitchen was large and well-equipped and looked out over the hills of the Langhe. We enjoyed out coffee on the balcony listening to the birds and our wine in the evening, watching the sunset over the hills and the sky fill with stars. The huge bathtub made for a divine soak, with the windows thrown open to the afternoon air. The beds were extremely comfortable and the wi-fi worked quite well. We found fabulous local treats on the counter and good stemware for the wines we kept buying! A great stay off the beaten path to truly absorb the peace and beauty of the region - and highly recommended property. Clay and Tamar were gracious and extremely hospitable. We'll be back to use the beautiful pool!

A piece of paradise in Piedmont

Thanks to Clay and Tamar we had a fabulous week in this villa in Sept of 2014. I fell in love with the pictures of the villa on the internet but wondered what our family and friends would do in the area because of its remote location. If you truly want an Italian experience, I would highly recommend a stay here. The pictures on the internet of the Villa are very accurate, but don’t do the scenery justice. There is a beautiful view of the hill across the valley. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable with all of the modern conveniences. It is quiet and serene and there are many places to find a nice spot to read or have a glass of wine. Our group did a variety of things, from cooking in the spacious kitchen, swimming in the pool, hiking to nearby villages to buy chocolate, having coffee and going to the market. Some of our group ventured further for day trips to Switzerland, Monaco, Turin, wine tasting in Piedmont and the Italian Riviera. The week flew by and we all wished that we had had another week to explore more of this beautiful region. We had three meals brought in, and would not have had it any other way. The first was a traditional Italian feast prepared by local chefs from the nearby town of Dogliani. The second meal was an afternoon pasta cooking class, taught by another duo of skilled Dogliani chefs, The highlight of our stay though was when Clay and Tamar baked us pizza in the wood fire oven on our final night in the Villa. Their gracious hosting made for a wonderful evening.

Fantastic stay, fantastic host!!!

We found this villa online for the eight of us, wanting a less touristy wine country and food paradise trip. Every single detail was thought of by John, our villa host, and we had the most incredible week of our lives! The villa was top of the line, super clean and modern! On top of a mountain with few neighbors, (with a view of the French Alps!) we stayed in paradise... Everyone had their own private quarters including a bathroom. The grounds were beautiful, the pool relaxing, the living room area was where we all hung out together drinking, eating, playing games... Even though there were so many other places to go and be alone for a while! The kitchen (there were two!) was a dream for all of us! We traveled with an American chef friend, and John set us up with a fantastic day with an Italian chef Fabio who came to us for cooking classes, even brought us homemade pizza dough to make pizzas in that fantastic outdoor wood burning pizza oven! We golfed, had 3 full wine tasting days with transportation, as well as transportation to THE FINEST restaurants in the area, all of which were outstanding but we must say, Osteria Dei Binelli, Fabio and Christian's restaurant, stands out as our favorite! We ate their the first night we arrived and we were all in heaven!! Affordable and delicious, HAVE THE TAJARIN, it's incredible!! John thought of everything for us, even shopped for us to have a mini stocked kitchen awaiting us upon arrival. Two friends arrived a couple of days later, and John helped get them to us when their flights were delayed. He also took the time to help each couple with their future travel plans as we were all splitting off at the end of the week. (My husband and I drove to Florence rather than train, and it was a beautiful trip! So happy he told us to drive!!) It felt as though he got to know us somewhat by email, and upon our first meeting, we all just clicked. We instantly wanted him at dinners and tastings with us, just to hang out with him! He lived down the street from the villa, and so did his parents. We all had dogs back home and were feeling homesick missing our furry friends, so John had his parents walk their dog down the street to us so we could get our "furry fix". Actually cried when we left him, hoping we could find a reason to have him as our host on a future Europe trip! All in all, the villa, it's owner Clay, and host John were the perfect dream come true for this Northern Italy vacation. We are forever thankful and will recom

Wine, Food, Friends, Culture

Meals with great friends, visits to some of the most incredible wine producers in the world, learning the ropes from amazing locals, and TRUFFLE SEASON, who could ask for anything more? When I arrived at Villa Bonvicino I was amazed at how breathtaking the property looked. An old farmhouse and a second building that has been transformed into Italian villa feel, with all the modern amenities you could ever need. Spacious rooms to relax in, the property is beautiful and has many places to walk around. Then there is the kitchen. I cam e with a group of food and wine people and we couldn’t have asked for a better place to be. There is a massive kitchen with a wood-burning rotisserie in it that we cooked a lamb in with plenty of room for 5 people to prep and cook the rest of the food. There was also a beautiful wood-burning pizza oven that we were able to make an abundance of classic pizza’s…with truffles. The property manager is much, much more than someone to tend to your needs. John is a true local and the ability to have intimate tasting visits with the best winemakers and proprietors in Barolo and Barbaresco is amazing. The owner of the property and John are known in the area with top chefs, restaurateurs, and winery owners, so if you are into a true immersion of what Piemonte has to offer there is none better. There is also the look into culture. John can show you lots of small towns nearby that focus on chocolates, hazelnuts, truffles, special cattle in the area, and the most amazing eggs you will ever have in your life. This place is a getaway or a glimpse into an amazing lifestyle…Have Fun, I did!!!

Fantastic Property - June 2013

We were a group of 8 adults and 2 kids visiting from all around the world. We have doing these vacations for a few years now and have visited some great properties around the world. Villa San Lorenzo is an amazing property that ranks at the very top. It has everything you could ask for - beautiful pool, sweeping views of prime wine country valleys and well designed modern furnishings. The hayloft with the dining area and the outdoor dining areas with the pizza open were our favorites. The place is kid friendly with lots of open spaces and things to do. Our group is a bunch of foodies and wine lovers. The villa is in a great location in the center of prime wine country - Barolo, Alba within an hour's drive - with access to some great restaurants. Ask Clay and Tamar, the owners, for recommendations. Clay, Tamar and their wonderful kids happening to be there when we visited and they are amazing hosts. The fabulous pizza dinner made in the outdoor wood burning oven by Clay was the highlight of our trip.

Absolutely Fantastic!

We just had the best Italian vacation and it was in large part due to this gorgeous villa and the unbelievable hospitality of Clay and Tamar. They pointed us to the best local restaurants, wineries, markets and even made our last night very special by making pizzas from scratch in the brick over pizza. The cooking kitchen and the large living/dining space and loft allowed for many wonderful evenings spent with friends, great food and wonderful wine. Would recommend this villa for a truly memorable experience.

Simply Amazing!!!!!

Our stay at villa San Lorenzo was, in one word, Amazing! The combination of great food, some of the worlds best wine and rolling hills in the backdrop of the Italian Alps is ideal...the villa is secluded and private atop a hill. The views are to die for and we would recommend watching the sunset over the hills while relaxing by the pool or watching the sunrise over the Italian Alps. There is plenty to do while vacationing at the villa. There are plenty of paths for hikes and runs at the same time there is easy access to the charming Piedmont villages such as Alba or Borolo. The local farmers market in Alba is charming and we found the most amazingly fresh produce to cook a meal back at the villa. The towns and villages also house top Michelin star restaurants and we really enjoyed our meal at the Piazza Duomo. The small local cafes and Trattorias also serve the best pasta and local food. The villa is spacious and easily accommodated 4 couples and kids with enough privacy and space for group activity and dining. It has all the amenities anyone might want from a full-scale gourmet kitchen to a large pool to space for a rowdy game of volleyball or soccer. The villa combined luxury with rustic local charm and has all the modern amenities you might wish for. The owners of the villa made the stay even more memorable. Clay and Tamar are thoughtful, friendly, and very hospitable. We have rented many vacation homes over the years but have never encountered owners like Tamar and Clay. You can rely on them to go the extra mile whether it is share some local intelligence, refer you to some private restaurants that you would have never known about, or even share a meal with you. By the time we left, we considered them our family friends. We would absolutely refer villa San Lorenzo to anyone and plan to go there ourselves again very soon.

Piemonte Paradiso

Bellissimo! I'm a veteran traveler in Italy, and Villa San Lorenzo is the most peaceful, elegant, and--yes--romantic place I've ever stayed. I love the relaxed, informal style of the villa, the stunning views of the surrounding hill towns and the distant Alps, and our gracious hosts, Clay and Tamar, who seemed to know everything about the enchanting world of Piemonte. This is the region that invented "slow" living, and as my wife and I wended our way through a charming hillside village en route to the villa, we immediately felt relaxed and stress-free. We've stayed here several times now; it's our home away from home in Italy.

Perfection in Piemonte

My family and I recently stayed at Villa San Lorenzo and I cannot say enough positive things about the experience: the setting with a view of the Alps is a slice of heaven. The accommodations are a perfect blend of luxe and welcome simplicity. The hosts and John, the manager, could not have been more gracious and helpful. And the region is perhaps Italy's best-kept secret. My husband is a serious oenophile and, through the connections of the owners, we were invited to tastings at exceptional wineries generally not open to the public. And the food and farmer's markets! It's no wonder that the Slow Food movement was born near the villa! Great hikes as well--expertly mapped out by John. If I could give this property 10 stars I would!

An Enchanting Week at the Villa San Lorenzo

We recently spent one week at the Villa San Lorenzo. Our visit to Piemonte was made so more special by staying at the Villa San Lorenzo and the wonderful recommendations made by Clay, the owner. The Villa is located on a private and beautifully situated property – with stunning views across the valley and beyond to the Alps. Because of the way it is laid out, every ensuite bedroom is totally private; and the large living spaces provide the opportunity for all to enjoy time together. But, as we were visiting during the summer (late June), it was the pool area and outside "dining room” that we enjoyed the most. It was so wonderful to return from a day's outing, relax by the pool, and enjoy dinner as the sun set over the valley and the mountains. We made arrangements with Clay to have three of our dinners prepared at the Villa. Franceso and Fabiana cooked delicious dinners for us. We loved the delicate zucchini blossoms and sage leaves - oh so lightly battered and fried, the tajarin pasta with different tasty sauces, the pizzas prepared in the outdoor wood fired oven and the homemade desserts. We also thoroughly enjoyed two of the osterias, which Clay suggested. On the day of our arrival, we ate lunch at Osteria dei Binelli, which is only a 10 minute drive from the Villa. We enjoyed our visit there so much that we returned another evening during the week. We also dined at Osteria Battaglino in Dogliani. Our dinner was just wonderful – highlighted with the porcini mushrooms the chef had harvested that day. For breakfast, we visited Pasticceria Truffa in Bossolasco. It is a wonderful walk from the Villa to the town – and by climbing the hill – we felt we had earned the delicious pudding like hot chocolate, cappuccinos and freshly made pastries. Of course, we couldn’t leave without some of the homemade chocolates. We made arrangements with Clay to visit some of the Barolo wineries. John Pinca, our driver and guide, picked us up at the Villa. We visited three wineries - all unique. Throughout John entertained us with stories about the area and the wineries making the day extra special. And then there is Massimo, the Manager of the Villa who took care of us all week. And, when my sister was injured in a fall, he met her and her husband in Dogliani and took them first to the Emergency Clinic and then accompanied them to the hospital in Mondovi, staying all day to act as interpreter and facilitator. We are forever in his debt.

I am an avid food and wine lover who has traveled to every major wine region in the world. Piemonte offers exquisite wines, incredible prepared traditional Italian cuisine which as times is elevated to an art form, and absolutely breathtaking scenery with steep vineyards, Italian Alps, and quaint hillside towns. I am a Food, Wine, and Travel photographer I have never visited a region anywhere in the world that delivers the trifecta of Food, Wine, and Views that the Langhe in Piedmont, Italy, has to offer!

Why they chose this property

The Villa is situated in a stunningly beautiful location with views of the surrounding mountains, lush green hillsides, and nearby villages, while offering peace, tranquility, and lots of outdoor space. The access to absolutely incredible restaurants and wineries is what initially drew me to the region. Piedmont is by far one of the most breathtaking wine regions in the world and the people who live in Piedmont welcome you with open arms and big smiles.

What makes this property unique

The private swimming pool, al fresco dining with stunning views, incredible peace and tranquility with the sounds of nature while sleeping in supreme comfort, and great walks right from the Villa make it a piece of heaven. Morning visits to the Chocolate shop with incredible coffee, pastries, and gelato or hot chocolate depending on the season followed by a lazy afternoon at our favorite Osteria with incredible homemade food and delicious wines is the perfect Sunday.
