About this property

"Uan" is a charming cluster of 5 houses surrounding a quiet courtyard. This is one of the newly renovated modern traditional houses, "Uan/Hoshi". The house was built more than 100 years ago and recently renovated for a vacation home. The house still has an old atmosphere of Kyoto and provides the latest furnishings. It is fully furnished and all necessary appliances will be provided.

The Hoshi (星) House is a two-story house of 50 m2 and fully renovated in 2018. There is the full kitchen(cookware, dinnerware, seasonings, a microwave, a toaster oven, a rice cooker, a hot water kettle and more), washing machine/dryer, washing detergent, utilities, and home appliances. Of course, fresh bed/bath linen and toothbrush are provided. There are two bedrooms. 1 double bed in the western style bedroom, and 3 futon sets in the tatami room.

Located in 5 minutes walk from Higashiyama station in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto.

The Higashiyama area is considered the most Kyoto like place in Kyoto. If you are interested in temples, the most prestigious Zen temple in Japan called Nanzen-ji is near the house. Also, Heian shrine, Shoren-in, Chion-in and Yasaka shrine are within a 5-10 minute walk from the houses. You can also walk to Gion area to the downtown in Kyoto.

Perfect Traditional Japanese Homebase

Super impressed with the layout of the house. Plenty of space up and down stairs, great shower room, kitchen, and laundry machine. AC both upstairs and downstairs. Host was responsive and checking/out was flawless. 10/10 would stay again.

Beautiful little home in quiet neighborhood

The Uan/Hoshi house was lovely. It is just as described and shown in the photo. The managers were helpful and quick to respond. We loved the house and having our own kitchen and washer/dryer. Only small disadvantage was bedrooms are upstairs and bathroom downstairs, but it was fine. We would definitely recommend it and stay again.

Amazing Location

We could not have chosen a better place to stay in Kyoto. The apartment was so comfortable and cozy. The location was tucked away from main traffic but still close to the bus and train stops. But the best part was our host. He greeted us on arrival and made us feel so welcome. This is truly a great location. Thank for so much for making us feel at home. My wife and I loved it!

Great Spot to Explore Kyoto From

The place was a short distance from some local shrines and not too far from the river which made getting dinner easy. It’s two floors with the bedroom on the second floor and the bathroom/kitchen/dining/laundry on the 1st floor. Nice to have a laundry machine during the trip that washed and dried clothes.

Great place to stay in Tokyo

If you don’t mind a 5 minute walk and value quiet and a real Japanese experience this place is great, nearby shrines and excellent food just a few yards away from this location makes it even better. My family was super happy of having the opportunity to see a Japaneses style house. The owner has great responses to any questions and are eager to help.

Perfect home base

It's a beautiful apartment with all the amenities one would want and in a quiet residential neighborhood that's convenient to public transportation. Our hosts couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful and always replied promptly to communications. I hope to revisit beautiful Kyoto in a different season and will definitely plan to stay here again.

Stayed here on my honeymoon and it was our favorite place. Loved everything about it. Great location in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood. Practical kitchen with coffee and tea. We had pastries at home as we got ready for the day. Immaculate bathroom. Great hosts.

Clean and efficient

Was about a 15 minute walk to both Sanjo station and the Butokuden, where I had an aikido seminar. The washer/dryer was a big plus! Very clean.

The hosts were so helpful and responded quickly and thoroughly to all of my questions. The home was very clean, quiet, and spacious. Felt very authentically “Japanese”. Really great location and peaceful neighborhood! Washer dryer is a big plus, although the dryer takes a really long time. Bedroom AC doesn’t work but all the others do (at least when we were there). Highly recommend!

An Outstanding Way to Experience Kyoto

Our family stayed at the Hoshi House and we absolutely loved it! The house is part of a small complex in a quiet historic neighborhood, a short walk from Maruyama park. The house has been beautifully restored and is perfect for those seeking tranquility after visiting Japan's more busy urban cities. The hosts were incredibly gracious and friendly and gave us a tour of the house and recommendations for local attractions. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer! We would return in a heartbeat if we visit Kyoto again. Thank you Kei and Satoru for an amazing experience! ありがとうございます!

Wonderful Kyoto!

It’s impossible not to like Kyoto, the place is magical! Temple town has so much to offer and while this was my third visit, I will be back again and hoping to stay at this lovely home again. It was a difficult to find as there are no house numbers or street signs. It’s not really a two bedroom, but the upstairs seating area next to the established bed can accommodate a futon and function as a place to sleep for another guest. Getting upstairs is a bit tricky because the wooden stairs are quite steep and slippery and there is no rail to hold on. Location was perfect and overall I’m rating this property with the maximum stars. Planning for a return in 2025.

Cute tradition style house in Kyoto

It was very easy to communicate with the owners about the property in perfect fluent English, and the house was very nice and pretty, stocked with amenities, and was a relaxing and comfortable space for my partner and I to use while exploring the Gion area and taking nearby transit to other parts of Kyoto! The air conditioning worked well, and the washer/drier was highly convenient for laundry purposes. The second floor might be difficult for anyone with mobility disabilities to access, since the stairs are a bit steep and narrow, and even a little slippery. I would recommend this space to anyone in general though, and wish I could've stayed longer than two nights!

Wonderful traditional Japanese house

We loved our stay in the Hoshi house! The location was just to our liking, a nice quite local neighborhood with lots of culture! Subway and bus stops were only a 10 minute walk and a short walk to Yasaka Shrine. While we wandered that direction we stumbled upon Shoren-in Monzeki & Chion-in Temple (which easily became our favorite). Due to the location we could stroll down at times when the crowds were gone. I was initially concerned how my back would tolerate the futons on the tatami mats but they were incredibly comfortable, so much so I abandoned the western bed for them! The house was spotlessly clean and the owners were very accommodating meeting us at our arrival and giving us a rundown of the house. Easily our favorite stay in Japan!
